Sturtz ALTAR SERVERS August 29 - Kody Kopacki & Peter Nguyen August 30 - Shannon Hayden & Duyen Phan September 5 - Peter Nguyen & Kody Kopacki September 6 - Elizabeth DiLandro, Daniel Duke & Madelyn Kruger QUESTION OF THE WEEK: In today’s Gospel story, Jesus accuses the religious leaders of being hypocrites. They act as though they are speaking for God but they are really speaking about what matters to them. Jesus points out that they are more concerned about pious practices than they are about God’s commandments. They criticized Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands before eating. But they showed no interest in the goodness of the disciples’ hearts. Adults: Which words of Jesus provide the most inspiration for the Christian work that you do? Youth: How do you welcome the words of Jesus into your heart? The Cemetery Committee would like to thank everyone who donated for maintenance of our cemeteries. All money collected will be used to keep our cemeteries in West Point and New Kent in good condition. Thanks to the Hispanic ministry for the work they have been doing for the past several weeks to clean up around our Church property. Envelopes are available in the Church for the second collection for debt reduction. Did You Know? Saint Thomas Aquinas was big and strong, slow to speak and quiet. People assumed he was rather dull. This gained him the nickname “Dumb Ox”. What they didn’t know, however, was that Thomas had an amazing memory, knew most of the Bible by heart and could actually understand complicated things quickly and explain them well. Which is what he loved to do, preaching often and writing in the course of his lifetime no fewer than 85 works of philosophy and theology books that changed the Church and the world. He is one of the most celebrated “doctors” (teachers) of the Church and is the patron saint of students, Catholic schools and universities. His feast day is January 28. Children (and their parents) should pray to Saint Thomas at the start of the new school year and whenever they become anxious about learning. ATTENTION: The Evangelization Committee will meet on Sunday, August 30th at 10:15 a.m. in the Boogaard Hall foyer. We will continue to develop our parish 5-year plan. Registration for Faith Formation classes ages 4 through high school is now due. Forms are located on the bulletin board near the side door. Books and supply fee is $30 per child, maximum $100 per family. If you have financial concerns, please contact Lorraine Ryalls at [email protected] or 804-843-3125 to discuss payment options. No child will be denied religious education due to inability to pay. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place before the 5:30 Saturday evening Mass on September 5th. Exposition will begin at 4:30 p.m. (at least two people must be present). Rosary will be at 4:50 p.m. Benediction will be at 5:15 p.m. Please remember to enter the sanctuary quietly and reverently during this time. Please remember to donate foods during the first weekend of September for the Good Neighbor Center. Thank you. Volunteers will begin cleaning our Church the week of September 7th. A schedule will be placed in the back of the Church designating the week you are asked to clean. If you cannot clean on a specific week, please try to get a substitute individual or family. If you have any questions, please call Carolyn Drexler, 804-694-7793. Come help celebrate Father Julz’s 25th anniversary of the priesthood with a pot luck luncheon on Sunday, September 27th after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Christian Formation classes are scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 4th due to the celebration of Father Julz’s 25th anniversary of ordination on September 27th. From our bishops: “Things have gone too far…” “In the United States abortion is legal throughout pregnancy. Yet abortion is a violation of human rights incomparable in magnitude and an atrocity for the whole human family. While Roe v. Wade appeared to create a right with some limitations, Doe v. Bolton, which was decided the same day, erased those limitations by creating a “health” exception so broad that it effectively allows abortion for any reason at any time… Most Americans are surprised and shocked to learn about the lack of any meaningful legal limitations for abortion. Most know things have gone too far. Together with those from many other faith communities, we work to bring about a society that recognizes abortion for what it truly is”.
