From the General Secretary’s desk
I am writing to you this year
from my new Chambers at the
Constitutional Cour t in
Braamfontein. Annette Gibson,
our indispensible mainstay, is
typing away at my computer,
and I am pacing a sunlit room
on a warm autumnal morning.
and insightfully about the unique features of the Rhodes Scholarships
in reflecting the Founder’s vision of education as a way to change the
world. For obvious reasons this message hit home in our country.
In Johannesburg Julian Ogilvie Thompson (Diocesan College
and Worcester, 1953), introduced Sir Colin while Shaun Johnson
(South Africa-at-Large and St Catherine’s, 1982) did this in Cape Town
followed on the podium by Lord Waldegrave, the Chair of the
Trustees.
There is much to talk about.
Sir Colin Lucas, former Vice
Chancellor of Oxford
University who has given the
Trust a distinguished and
salutary five years, is retiring as
Warden. At functions in
Johannesburg and Cape Town
in March this year, South African
Edwin Cameron
Scholars took their leave of Sir
Colin. Dr Lisa Klein paid
vivid tribute to his expertise and personal qualities in stabilising the
Trust’s finances, repairing and consolidating its relationship with the
University and Colleges, and being a mentor to scholars in residence.
Before I deal with the excellent list of things Annette suggests I mention
in this letter to you, Lisa has suggested – rightly so – that I should
mention “the fabulous calibre of Scholars selected last year”. I do.
As a historian, Sir Colin had, apart from all his other gifts, an acute
sense in assessing scholars; his annual reports on our scholars in
residence were not only astute, but a joy to read. Sir Colin’s successor
as Warden, Professor Donald Markwell (Queensland and Trinity,
1981), is the first Rhodes Scholar ever to occupy the position. He
will be the eighth Warden.
Dr Louise Vincent (South Africa-at-Large and Wolfson, 1992), has
stepped down as Secretary of the Free State and Eastern Cape Selection
Committee. Merridy Wilson-Strydom (South Africa-at-Large
and Lincoln, 1999), has been appointed to replace her. Louise has
been a superb Secretary. She is one of the leading intellectual forces
at Rhodes University and has a devoted following amongst humanities
students, not because she is a soft touch, but because she isn’t. We
will really miss her.
We are excited to announce that Rhodes House has introduced an
on-line application service. Check out the details on our website.
Dr Tim Nuttall (St Andrew’s College and Pembroke, 1982), Senior
Deputy Head, Secretary of the St Andrew’s Selection Committee and
previously Secretary of the KwaZulu-Natal Selection Committee, is
leaving for Kenya where he will take up the post of founding Head of
a new international boarding school at Tsavo. On behalf of the Trustees,
I would like to thank him for all the wonderful work he has done over
many years. His successor is Aiden Smith, Housemaster Graham
House.
Professor Markwell is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)
of the University of Western Australia. As a Rhodes Scholar, he
completed the MPhil and later the DPhil in International Relations.
After a year as a Procter Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School at
Princeton (1984-85), he returned to Oxford as a Research Fellow of
New College (1985-86) before becoming a Tutorial Fellow of Merton
College and University Lecturer in Politics (1986-97). From 1997 to
2007, he served as Warden of Trinity College, University of Melbourne,
and was a Professorial Fellow of that University in political science
and public policy. He took up his present position at the University
of Western Australia in January 2007.
Prof Jakes Gerwel has stepped down after serving his five-year
term as Chairman of the South Africa-at-Large Selection Committee.
We are very grateful to him for his stature and expertise. His place
will be taken by Gill Marcus, Chair of the Board at ABSA bank.
My colleague as Zimbabwe Secretary, David Morgan (Rhodesia and
Worcester, 1958), has retired from his job with the Trust after 34
years. He kept producing quality selections from Zimbabwe, despite
the tragic misrule that blighted the country. His successor is
Dr David Hatendi (Rhodesia and University, 1977), a financial
consultant, whom I met all too briefly when we overlapped more than
30 years ago at Oxford.
Professor Markwell’s academic and professional interests are
wide-ranging. His recent publications include ‘John Maynard Keynes and
International Relations’ (OUP, 2006) and ‘A large and liberal education’:
higher education for the 21st century (Australian Scholarly Publishing,
2007). He has served on academic editorial boards and institutional
advisory and governing boards. He was a member of the Symons
Commission on Commonwealth Studies (1995-97). At the University
of Western Australia, he led a major review of curriculum/course
structures which has attracted international attention. He has also
been active in the development of educational philanthropy in Australia.
The Canadian Secretary, Arthur Scace (Ontario and Corpus
Christie, 1961), has also retired. His successor is Andrew Wilkinson
QC, (Prairies and Magdalen, 1980).
I am very grateful to Lisa Klein and Ndumiso Luthuli for their
assistance to me as well as all the regional secretaries and the chairs
and members of the selection committees. Sir Colin’s speech at the
March functions really helped reinforce our sense that involvement
with the Scholarships is not only enjoyable but socially useful.
The Chairman of the Trustees (the Rt Hon Lord Waldegrave
of North Hill) said: “We are delighted that Don Markwell has accepted
this appointment. His career reflects deep commitment to the values
of the Rhodes Scholarships, including commitment to academic
excellence, liberal education and the welfare of students, as well as
extensive experience in educational leadership and management. He
brings also a considerable understanding of Oxford and its colleges.
We are, of course, particularly happy to have for the first time a Rhodes
Scholar as Warden.”
Lastly, I want to mention, even as she shoots me a groaning look of
veto, that Annette Gibson has done extraordinary work despite
a horrible year. It included ill health, an awful fall, family bereavement
and unwellness, and assorted other plagues, pestilences and misfortunes.
We love and appreciate Annette and thank her for her near-ceaseless
devotion to what we do.
The Rhodes Scholar functions in March which I mentioned earlier
were well attended and happy occasions. Sir Colin spoke movingly
