2012 CELEBRATION OF GIVING ® United Way’s mission is to provide leadership in uniting our community to improve people’s lives and build a vital, caring community. Thank You For Living United Greenville County’s caring spirit and generosity is evident in so many ways for so many great causes throughout the year, but we are especially grateful and honored by the way this community supports our United Way each fall. If you were one of the 37,000 people who joined the cause this year by providing a donation, we thank you for making this commitment to Greenville County and promise that your gift will be put to great use. Last year alone, United Way and its partner programs touched the lives of approximately 114,000 people right here at home. Because of your generosity during this campaign, we will be able to continue to meet those needs, while furthering our investment in the most effective and efficient programs that help people every day across this community. Specifically, your gifts will be used to assist people in need right now through the funding of 87 local programs. These programs provide essential services that nurture children, help and encourage youth success, strengthen families and neighborhoods, improve our community’s health, and assist people in times of crisis. The funds will also be used to further United Way’s efforts to eliminate future needs by working to improve school readiness for young children, increase high school graduation rates for youth and create financial stability for all. I also want to express our deep gratitude to Campaign Chair Jim Bourey for all of the time he put into this year’s effort, and the commitment he’s shown to United Way over the years. Jim has been a real advocate for our community and an invaluable leader for United Way. He led this campaign with great skill and passion, and we can’t thank him enough. To those of you who were unable to contribute during the 2012 campaign, I invite you to join us in 2013 by volunteering your time with United Way or one of our partner programs through United Way Hands On Greenville (handsongreenville.org). On behalf of my fellow board members and the United Way staff, thank you once again for living united. To learn more about United Way of Greenville County, visit www.unitedwaygc.org or call 467-3333. 2 Richard N. Wilkerson 2012 United Way Board of Trustees Chair Retired Michelin North America 2012 CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS Community Responds with Record Campaign With just over $16 million pledged for United Way programs and initiatives, our 2012 community campaign was one for the record books. Not only does the total of $16,021,264 establish a new mark for our own United Way, it also sets a record statewide as the largest United Way campaign in South Carolina. Both facts serve as a remarkable testament to the amazing collective generosity of our community and make us proud to call Greenville County home. Obviously, this great campaign result would not have been possible without the more than 37,000 donors who selflessly offered their financial support. Your compassionate and generous giving will help United Way continue to meet the needs of so many in our community. We must also thank the more than 1,300 volunteers who joined together to volunteer their time and talents to do the behind the scenes work of the campaign. Included among that group are the 700 men and women at companies and organizations across Greenville County who stepped up to serve as their workplace’s Campaign Coordinators. Thank you, Coordinators! Also, special thanks to my vice chair, and our 2013 campaign chair, Art Seaver. I know Art and his vice chair, Michael Cinquemani, will do a wonderful job leading our next campaign. Serving as chair for the United Way campaign was one of the most gratifying experiences I’ve ever had. Having a front row seat to witness the inspiring work of United Way and its partners agencies, the dedication of our hard-working volunteers, and the compassion and generosity of our friends and neighbors, is certainly something I’ll never forget. On behalf of our volunteers, our partner agencies whose programs receive United Way funding, and the thousands of individuals and families who benefit from this community’s generosity and compassion, I thank you for once again showing why Greenville County is such a wonderful place to live. • $16,021,264 raised. • 37,145 donors contributed. • 624 companies participated. • Workplace campaigns represented 73% of the total. • 197 companies contributed a corporate gift representing 19% of the total. • Retirees, medical professionals and others contributing outside the workplace represent 8% of the total. • 14 new campaigns contributed $92,246 from employee and corporate gifts. • Contributions from donors giving $1,000 or more represent 47% of the total campaign. • 4,279 Palmetto Society donors contributed $7,556, 335. • Thanks to the Stathakis family of restaurants, Stax restaurants, Greenville County Recreation District, Greenville Zoo and Roper Mountain Science Center for giving generous coupons to anyone pledging $250 or more. • Special thanks to Table 301 for graciously donating gift certificates in recognition of Palmetto Society donors. • Special thanks to Hollingsworth Funds for providing a challenge match for Tocqueville donors which contributed a $100,000 grant to Harvest HOPE Food Bank weekend backpack program. • A special thank you to Erwin-Penland, Inc., who provided in-kind creative services to develop promotional materials for the 2012 campaign. • Thanks to the Commerce Club for donating gift certificates in recognition of our Young Philanthropists. All were successful in conveying the message to get involved with the community through United Way. In a community like ours, so filled with generosity, it would be easy to take such generosity for granted. Yet, there is nothing ordinary about the leadership of United Way donors—particularly that of the members of the United Way Palmetto Society. Once again, these donors have surpassed all expectations in the kindness they have shown to our neighbors. George F. O’Brien III WHM Capital Advisors 2012 Chair David Lominack TD Bank 2013 Chair We want to thank the 4,279 Palmetto Society members who contributed $7,556,335 to our community. Included in the totals are 799 donors who became new Palmetto Society members by giving at the $1,000 or more level for the first time. Palmetto Society dollars represent 47% of the total annual campaign and 59% of combined individual donor and workplace employee donor dollars. Women’s Leadership 1,602 donors contributed $2,116,954 Margaret Marcum Prudential C. Dan Joyner Company REALTORS 2012 Chair African American Leadership 248 donors contributed $378,053 As part of the Michelin Challenge, 237 members committed to step up their giving to the Palmetto Society level. We want to extend a special thank you to Michelin North America for this important incentive. The Society named for the French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville emulates his observations that Americans lend faithful support to one another. Each member of the Tocqueville Society has his or her own reasons for joining but all share in knowing that they are having a positive impact on the place they call home. A challenge match from the Hollingsworth Funds was accepted by 21 Tocqueville donors to increase their giving and make possible a $100,000 grant to Harvest HOPE Food Bank weekend backpack program. This grant will allow the program to expand to five additional schools for two years. The children are provided backpacks of nourishing nonperishable food on weekends when they may not have access to a nourishing meal. No child should go hungry in this community and we thank Hollingsworth Funds and these special Tocqueville donors for making this special funding available. We thank the 134 members of the Tocqueville Society for their outstanding leadership. United Way Poinsett Society P. Edwin Good Jr. Poinsett Society Chair Hampton Development Company A gift to the United Way’s Endowment is recognized through the Poinsett Society. But the true recognition for a donor is the fact these gifts have endless impact—a true Legacy for the Future. When a gift is made to the Poinsett Society donors are establishing a never-ending gift to our community. 112 donors have made outright or deferred gifts through the Poinsett Society, totaling $14.2 million. In 2012 The Poinsett Society committee focused on two priorities - Tocqueville Legacy Circle and United Way Life. Tocqueville Legacy Circle is directed at encouraging donors to make deferred or current gifts of $200,000 or more which will perpetuate an annual gift at the $10,000 Tocqueville level. Eleven new Tocqueville Legacy Circle members were added in 2012 bringing the total to 26 TLC members. United Way Life is a life insurance program that allows donors to utilize life insurance of $200,000 or more with a fixed premium for a maximum of 5 years at a very affordable level. This allows younger donors to make very generous commitments early in life. Six donors committed to gifts through United Way life totaling $2,250,000. A special thanks to these donors for looking to the future of caring. The Poinsett Society continues to educate and cultivate donors about how they can make a legacy gift for the future of our community. Call 467-3517 for more information. A Legacy for the Future—Please remember the United Way Endowment in your will or estate plan. 5 #1 AWARD WINNERS #1 Award – Top 5 Campaigns (Employee & Corporate Total) 1 Fluor Corporation 2 Michelin North America 3 Greenville Hospital System 4 GE Energy 5 Greenville County Schools $1,656,280 $1,550,134 $1,007,747 $821,840 $566,588 #1 Award – Top 5 Campaigns (Employee ONLY) 1 Fluor Corporation 2 Michelin North America 3 Greenville Hospital System 4 Greenville County Schools 5 GE Energy $1,108,298 $1,089,085 $1,007,747 $566,588 $548,340 #1 Award – 500 to 1,000 Employees 1 Michelin Americas Research Company 2 Nutra Manufacturing, Inc. 3UPS 4 Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. 5BB&T $311,266 $208,119 $178,029 $140,587 $129,255 #1 Award – 200 to 499 Employees 1 Canal Insurance Company 2 Baldor Electric Company 3 Mitsubishi Polyester Film, Inc. 4 TD Bank 5MetLife $170,394 $163,243 $131,171 $125,195 $103,508 #1 Award – 100 to 199 Employees 1AMECO 2 Elliott Davis, LLC 3 Renewable Water Resources 4CertusBank 5 Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. $127,525 $112,854 $102,000 $73,912 $65,208 #1 Award – 25 to 99 Employees 1 Gallivan, White & Boyd, P.A. 2 Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP 3 Ahold USA 4 Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP 5UBS #1 Award – 2 to 24 Employees 1 Easlan Capital Inc. 2 Greenville Drive 3 CoLinx, LLC 4 Master PT 5 Sullivan Company, LLC 6 $83,722 $75,520 $61,160 $59,695 $59,045 $32,370 $19,788 $18,372 $17,300 $15,277 United Way of Greenville County Salutes CAMPAIGN AWARD WINNERS Recognizing Outstanding Employee Campaigns Award Criteria • One or more Palmetto Society members • $100 or more employee per capita • 50% or more employee participation • 50% of contributors are Fair Share contributors Chairman’s Award (4 or more of award criteria met) A Child’s Haven, Inc.
