hearing pr o tection - NZ Safety Online Catalogue
An on-site noise
survey is the first step
in minimising noise
induced hearing loss.
*ACC statistics 2012.
Don’t gamble with safety.
HEARING PROTECTION
A quarter of the
NZ workforce are
affected to some
degree by harmful
noise at work.*
119
HEARING PROTECTION
STEP 2 – DETAILED ASSESSMENT
If the preliminary noise survey averages
over 84dB over an 8 hour period a
detailed assessment is required.
A formal noise survey should be carried
out by an occupational hygienist
or specially trained occupational
health nurse.
The assessment will:
(a) Q uantify the amount of noise to
which employees are exposed
Noise Induced Hearing Loss may not
be noticed for many years, until the
damage has been done and the
symptoms become a problem for the
sufferer – and those around them.
That’s why it is important to proactively
reduce excessive exposure to noise to
prevent hearing loss.
NOISE EXPOSURE TIMES
Understanding noise
and exposure times
If the noise source
is doubled
83dB
The noise level only
goes up 3 dB
86dB
Small increases in
decibel level
89dB
Represent enormous
increases in noise level
and risk
92dB
Your exposure time to noise is also an
important factor in selecting protection
levels. The class system rating is based
on an 8-hour exposure. Anything
beyond 8 hours exposure time and the
protection level needs to increase.
(c) H
elp in developing noise control
strategies
(d) Determine appropriate hearing
protector needs
STEP 3 – CONTROL
ELIMINATE – if practicable, control noise
at source
ISOLATE – where practicable move
noise sources away from employees
MINIMISE – Provide hearing protectors
or use enclosures to reduce the
amount of noise emitted.
STEP 4 – HEARING PROTECTORS
If hearing protectors are being used as
a control, you must consider
1. S taff education as to the need for
hearing protectors
2. Define hearing protector areas
with signage
3. P
rovide a selection of hearing
protectors (not one will fit all)
4. Issuing hearing protectors to
individuals and validation of the fit to
the individual user
5. C
leaning and maintenance of
hearing protectors
6. T raining and education for people
wearing hearing protectors.
STEP 5 -MONITORING
Monitor the health effects of noise in
the workplace (hearing testing) and
notify any serious harm (any signs
of hearing loss). An occupational
hygienist or specially trained
occupational health nurse should
conduct testing:
This class system simplifies selection
processes of hearing protectors.
The SLC80 (Sound Level Conversion) is
a laboratory estimate of the amount
of attenuation (noise reduction)
achievable by 80% of informed users
with a particular hearing protector.
Being a population based rating some
users will get more attenuation and
some will get less.
110 dB
CLASS 5
STEP 1 – NOISE SURVEY
Conduct a preliminary noise survey to
identify any possible noise hazards.
(b) Identify sources of noise
NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS (NIHL) IS
THE MOST COMMON, PERMANENT AND
PREVENTABLE OCCUPATIONAL INJURY IN
THE WORLD.
World health organization report on
occupational noise.
The decibel scale is a logarithmic
scale so small numerical changes
represent enormous physical changes.
An increase of 3dB from 83dB to 86dB
is double the noise and 86dB to 89dB is
double that again.

HEARING PROTECTION
HEARING PROTECTORS
TYPES OF EARPLUGS
Considerations
when selecting
hearing protectors
Disposable
foam earplugs
Corded
earplugs
Earplugs are required
to be rolled down
between thumb and finger before
fitting into the ear canal.
Available in both
foam disposable
and re-usable ranges.
1. COMFORT
Will the wearer be comfortable
wearing the protector. Consider the
conditions worked in, is it hot or
cold etc
2. NOISE REDUCTION
Will the protector reduce the noise
level enough
3. SIZE
Will the earplugs fit correctly in the ear
canal. Not too loose or too tight
4. COMMUNICATION NEEDS
Are there audible warnings or alarms
that need to be heard
5. SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Is there restricted access or object
that could limit size of the protectors
6. CLEANLINESS
Will the wearer be working in a
hygienic or toxic area and need to
dispose of the protector
7. COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PPE
Helmets, shields, hats, glasses etc.
All need to be considered
IN NZ HEARING PROTECTORS ARE
REQUIRED TO BE CERTIFIED TO THE
AS/NZS 1270: 2002 ACOUSTICS HEARING PROTECTORS STANDARD.
• This creates an exceptionally good fit
• Provides a high level of protection
• Are compatible with most other PPE
• Do not hold in heat around the ear
Wearing hearing protectors
that block too much noise
(overprotection) has a
negative effect.
Re-usable
earplugs
Audiologists often see more hearing
loss in workers who ‘cheat’ on the fit
and wear time of their earplugs.
Earbands
Re-usable plugs do
not require roll down.
Earplugs held in to the ear canal by a
head band.
• Hygiene is maintained with no
contact required with the inserted
part of the Plug
•C
omfortable fit for most wearers
• Can be washed and re-used with
a life span of up to three months,
providing great value

TYPES OF EARMUFFS
Passive
earmuffs
Use a combination
of clamp force, seal
around the ear and an
outer shell as a physical
barrier to keep out
harmful levels of noise.
environment by allowing safe level
sounds to be heard
• T his allows wearers to hear important
communication from co-workers,
alarms and warning signals at a safe
amplified level
• Ideal for working in busy workplaces
with multiple hazards
Communication
hearing earmuffs
• Harder to lose than plugs
Allow the wearer to communicate
clearly via two way radios or mobile
phones whilst being protected from
high noise levels.
• On the negative side, earmuffs can
be bulky and become uncomfortable
to wear in hot environments
• They enable clear oral communications
in high noise environments that would
not normally be possible
• Easy to fit and more likely to obtain
the protection levels
Overprotected workers typically
compromise the fit of their protector
by pulling the earplug out partway,
or lift up the cup of the earmuff to
hear instructions from co-workers,
maintenance sounds from the
machinery, warning signals etc.
•C
an be hung round the wearer’s neck
when not in use
• Conversely, If hands are dirty when
rolling down the plugs, hygiene can
be compromised
• Robust and minimal maintenance

seals and foam inserts required

The E-A-Rfit™ validation system uses
dual microphones to measure the

NOISE INDICATOR
The 3M Noise Indicator alerts users to potentially dangerous noise levels, helping them
identify areas where they may need to wear
hearing protection.

or above 85 dBA - hearing protection may
be required
• Green Flashing LED: Noise levels are below

HEARING PROTECTION
Earmuffs traditionally
attenuate (block
out noise) very well
in high frequencies,
but poorly in low
frequencies. Howard
Leight’s patented Air Flow Control™
technology (AFC), delivers superior
low-frequency attenuation allowing
surrounding sounds like alarms,
warnings and co-workers to be heard
more naturally.

Inside the snap-in AFC ear cushion,
a series of holes allows the cushion
to breathe more effectively and
channels the air out of the base
cushion, much like a car shock
absorber. The controlled flow of
air dampens low-frequency
vibrations whilst maintaining
excellent high frequency
attenuation. AFC technology is a
standard feature on all Leightning ®
