O n T hur sday, July 5, 2012, at 4:4 0 a . m.,
TELUS Communications were the vic tims of
a thef t of ab ove ground telecommunications
cable. T he thef t was f rom a lo cation on the
south side of Countr y Hills B oulevard N . E .,
ab out 20 0 m east of Stoney Trail N . E ., Cal gar y. O f fender(s) cut and removed the cable
which resulted in a total loss of all telecom munication ser vices , such as tele phone, in ternet and 911 access to ap proximately 415
homes in this area .

through a f ield and then into a tree line out
of sight. T he susp ec t lef t b ehind the sec tion
of cable.
T he Calgar y Police Ser vice were called to
the scene and conduc ted a search of the
area where the culprit was obser ved f leeing
and found t wo additional, 20 fo ot sec tions
of co p p er cable, hidden in the bushes . T he
cable recovered was wo r th $22,0 0 0
A s a result of this investigation over
$30 0,0 0 0 wo r th of stolen vehicles and trail er s were also recovered.

CBC Radio Canada at 8717 O ld Banf f Co ach
Rd. SW. O nce inside the fenced yard, he
cut a 20 fo ot sec tion of co p p er wire. Two

Since March 2011, the Calgar y Light Rail
Transit s ystem (LRT ) has b een the vic tim of
numerous thef ts of co p p er cable and pro p er t y damage. T hese t yp es of crimes greatly
imp ac t the day to day o p erations of the LRT
s ystem; which on a t ypical day moves ap proximately 250,0 0 0 p eo ple to and f rom
wo rk . T he total cost to date of stolen pro p er t y and pro p er t y damage is estimated at
over $8 0,0 0 0.

T hrough the cour se of the investigation, a
f ire was lo cated ap proximately 1 k m away
f rom where the thef t to ok place. O n scene,
p olice lo cated the cable stolen f rom the earlier thef t. O f fender(s) had at tempted to burn
the strip of plastic co ating of f the cable to
access the co p p er wire.
