the mile route on Saturday. Charli’s Buddy Walk Team “Charli’s
Sidekicks,” raised $570 for the Buddy Walk. Buddy Walk teams
help strengthen the DSASTX’s (Down Syndrome Association of

EdenHill in New Braunfels hosts aging conference
NEW BRAUNFELS — The
Barshop Institute for Longevity and
Aging Studies (UT Health Science
Center-San Antonio), in partnership with EdenHill Communities,
the only Continuing Care
Retirement Community (CCRC) in
the New Braunfels area, announces
“Age & Engage!” Research Advances
in Healthy Aging, which takes place
on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 8:30 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m., at the McKenna Events
Center, 801 W. San Antonio St. in
New Braunfels. It is free, open to

edenhill.org/news/7-age-engage.
The inaugural, community-wide
educational symposium celebrates
the recent unveiling of EdenHill
Communities’ new Wellness and
Life Enrichment Center, the flagship of the CCRC’s new educational
programming component.
As EdenHill Communities enters
the home-stretch of a $72 million
campus redevelopment ($45 million of which went toward construction costs), the community is
dramatically transformed from an
“old folks home for pastors and
their wives,” in 1910, to the only
CCRC within Comal, Hays and
Guadalupe counties.
“Age & Engage!” will present five
world-class scientists from the field
of aging studies to share cutting-edge
discoveries that are changing the
way we prevent, treat and view agerelated conditions. Speakers from
the Barshop Institute for Longevity
and Aging Studies will present as
follows:
• Steven N. Austad, Ph.D.
Professor of Cellular and Structural
Biology, UTHSC
“Paths to Aging Research:
Highlights from Articles from San
Antonio Express-News”
• Veronica Galvan, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, UTHSC
Barshop Institute and Physiology
“A Leap toward Treatment:
Unraveling the Mechanisms that
Link Aging to Alzheimer’s Disease”
• Sara Espinoza, MD, MSc
Assistant Professor, Section Chief
for Research - Division of Geriatrics,
and Associate Director for Clinical
Programs–GRECC; UTHSC Barshop
Institute and Medicine - Geriatrics,
Gerontology & Palliative Medicine
“Feel Your Best at Any Age! Tips
for Healthy Aging and Preventing
Frailty”
• Daniel A. Johnson, MD
Professor and Chair, UTHSC
School of Medicine; Medical Director,
UT Medicine Eye Clinic at the MARC
“Macular Degeneration: What
Everyone Needs to Know”
• Sue Cunningham, Ph.D., RD, LD
Assistant Professor, UTHSC School
of Health Professions
“Your Diet: Murder Mystery or
Reality Show?”
When the conference takes place
on Nov. 7, it will serve as a springboard for the educational programming component that will play a
vital role at EdenHill Communities
going forward. The conference aims
to inform, educate and motivate the
local and regional senior community,
as well as professional senior-care staff
and advocates.
“Age & Engage!” is underwritten by
lead sponsor Broadway Bank. Other
sponsors include Morrison Senior
Living, Greenbrier Development,
Churchill Management and Resolute
Health.
