T
DALLAS JAG CLUB (JAGUAR OWNERS ASSOCIAtion of the South West) hosted their 43rd annual
Concours over the weekend of Sept 13th & 14th.
The show also celebrated the club’s 50th anniversary! The weekend proved to be a lot of fun and fellowship for
the folks that attended.
Friday morning saw me, Charlie Laurence, and Dick
& LaNeal Russ meeting at the dealership in order to caravan
southward. Dick Heiderich drove down separately, as did Jeff
Hand.
The drive to the hotel in Addison TX was pretty much
uneventful, the weather was a typical summer day with blue
skies and warm temperatures. That’s the good news. Bad news
was that it didn’t take long for the warm to become HOT! My
car turned out to be pretty comfortable, but the two E Types in
our group had no air conditioning.
We stopped for relief just south of the Red River at
the tourist center and it didn’t take long for several folks to
come by and admire the two E Types! There are few cars that
are as timeless and still beautiful as the E Type!
We got to our hotel in good time, around 1-ish or so.
Check in was easy and I joined Dick & Sue Heiderich and
Charlie for a beer before going to my room. We were having a
nice visit when one of the staff came by to see if the E Type
out front belonged to one
of us...the windows of
Charlie’s E were down
and the rain was comin’
down!
HE
L to R: Dick and LaNeal scored a
perfect 10.0 in their Driven Class.
Charlie took 3rd in his Driven
Class.
Dick and Sue Heiderich tied for 2nd
with Jeff Hand in their Championship Class.
The rain got a bit intense for a bit but cleared up
pretty quickly. It was after the rain that I moved my car to the
covered parking with the rest of our Jags, and the task of
cleaning the rain and dirt began. It was not too difficult and the
next item on the schedule was the hospitality suite and connecting with old friends and fellow car nuts.
Saturday morning hit me a bit harshly. I woke up at
about 5:30 or so and could not get back to sleep. The restaurant didn’t open until 7:00 and rather than just wait for the
clock to creep by, I got dressed and went to the parking garage
too start cleaning my car.
Overnight, the car had gotten really dusty so I got
busy cleaning the minor dirt and dust off the car. Next thing I
noticed was that the paint wasn’t quite as brilliant as the afternoon before! Soooo, I moved the car over to the main entrance
to get better lighting, and put on another quick wax job to re-

store the shine! Yeah, I was livin’ the dream...waxing a
Jaguar before sunrise while waiting for breakfast! People
driving by in the dark probably figgered I was either crazy
or really, really, anal about getting a car ready!
After breakfast, gettin’ cleaned up, and driving
over to the show site, it was time to get the car checked for
the safety items. Margaret McDowell of the Dallas
Club and Jeff Hand were the safety inspectors, and we
were all surprised to discover that my horn wasn’t
working! Dang! [Got the horn repaired after returning
home, both elements
of the horn had quit
and it was about
$190 to get ‘em
fixed! Would’ve
been nice if had been
a fuse or loose wire!]
The field of
cars at the show turned
out to be really nice. At
a lot of shows, you’ll
usually have a dog or
two, and perhaps a marginal car or so. Not this weekend.
The collection of E Types ran to a dozen or so, there were
several XJS models, and the XK series had several as well.
Perhaps the highlight of the show was a nicely
restored XK-140 that was national champ for 2 yrs in Modified Class. Stunning is even too small a word to describe

this car.
The setting for the show was the Prestonwood
Country Club of Dallas, and it was an excellent choice. We
had facilities close at hand, the lunch served in the shade
was excellent, and we had an abundance of shade as well
for most of the cars.
I didn’t stay for the awards dinner on Saturday, so
I can’t comment on the function. Conversations after the
fact indicated all had a great time.

cours portion of the day
was completed, and it
gave me a chance to
check out my car a bit on
the way home. Whereas
going southbound required consideration for the two cars with me, going north
was a bit more flexible.
Since the car has an aftermarket supercharger
pulley (installed by James at Euro Tech), it was pretty, uh,
interesting to see how the car performed on the freeway.
I’m sure you’ve encountered the situation where you are
cruising at a nice pace, slightly above the speed limit, and
you get slowed by Dawdling Dan in the left lane; he’s
leading a group of 3 or 4 cars trying to get by him, with a
truck or two in the right lane.
Sooner or later, the folks would get the idea that
they should be in the right lane, they would move over,
and it gave me opportunity to sample the wonders of compressed intake charges of air into the lovely V-8 Jaguar
intake manifold. When the hammer is dropped at 70 mph,
the downshift seems to take a few hundredths of a second,
then the motor winds up quickly, and butt gravity is instantly converted into chest gravity! Yeehaw! It takes only
seconds to clear the group of dawdlers, and 90 mph arrives
pronto! And to top it off, I was getting a bit over 23 mpg
while cavorting along the I-35 corridor at speeds in the 80
to 85 mph range, with spurts to 90!
Sunday morning brought an adventure for Jeff
Hand. He called my house at about 9:00 with a problem.
Seems his car was sputtering and fussing, and backfired a
few times. Fortunately, he was able to dive off I-35 into a
gas station at Marietta.
He reported the details to me, and I called a few
of our folks for recommendations regarding a wrecker

service. Mike Waldron had a good suggestion, I passed the
number to Jeff and he made arrangements for the carrier to
bring his XJS to Euro Tech. (Good thing Jeff has towing insurance, the bill was steep. But, the company has worked with
Euro Tech and a few of the club members so all was OK.)
In the meantime, I remembered that Jess and Sarah
had driven down to Dallas that day to look at and buy Mike
Sunday’s wonderful ’06 XK8 Victory Edition. The color of
the car is a very limited availability color of “copper black”,
and it changes colors depending on how the light hits the car.
(They had planned on driving the car back, but Mike had misplaced some paperwork.)
At any rate, I called the Baxter’s and they were able
to meet up with Jeff while he waited for the truck. Sarah got
to ride side saddle in the back seat while Jeff and Jess got the
regular seats. I met up with them in Moore and drove Jeff up
to Euro Tech and helped him get his Volvo from home.
Turned out to be a bad coil.
While waiting for the truck, Jeff had seen Dick and
LaNeal go by, as well as Dick Heiderich. Dick went into the
McDonald’s near the gas station but didn’t see Jeff! What an
adventure!

Sept 7th saw the best turnout of COJA cars since the

really grabbed attention!
This coming Saturday, Oct 5th, we’ll be meeting

Porsche Club Car Show…
T
WAR BONNET REGION OF THE PCA HOSTED
their annual car show on Sept 21st in the parking lot of Sonic HQ across the street from the
ballpark. It was a casual affair, and started
about 10:00 and ran till 2:00 or so.
Even though the area had been reserved and
marked for the show, there were still a coupla nonentries that were parked in the midst of the show cars. It
looked a bit odd to have a pickup or a dirty SUV parked
in our midst, but the owners might’ve been away on
business.
Another interesting highlight was that this was
the Saturday for the March Against Alzheimer’s, and
several streets were blocked off, and then we were
treated to hundreds of folks walking by that morning.
Charlie Laurence was there with his E Coupe,
Dick Heiderich and Jeff Hand brought their XJS’s,
Johnny Trammel scored a hit with the folks by bringing
his new F Type. New member Curtis Wangrud brought
his XKR, and I drove BLAYACK to represent the S
Type’s in the world. Jack Finks, MB Club President,
joined us with his SL convertible.
There
were no prizes,
no

classes,
and
everyone had a
great visit and

about as the
show was winding down, Rocky Santiago dropped in
with a gorgeously redone XK-140 in black over red.
What a machine!
My black S Type was sandwiched between
Charlie’s blue E and Rocky’s XK, it was kinda like putting Ruth Buzzi between Marilyn Monroe on one side
and Kim Novak on the other!
Great fun in the sun, though, and we all enjoyed
the day.

Local Locations Day…
G
LENN AND JOLENE SHORT HAD A REALLY NEAT
Idea for a Saturday event...we hit 3 local attractions
plus lunch, all within a mile or so of each other!
The first place was the Railway Museum,
and it was a really interesting event since Tommie the Tank
Engine (I think I got that right!) was in town, and every Mom
and Dad with wee kids had to be there! The parking lot was
overflowing, and they were parking cars about 8 or 9 deep on
the grass!
I showed up
late since I didn’t
want to ride the train,
and decided to not
even attempt to get
into the place. The
rain was pretty vigorous and was another
inhibitor for me. I
moved outa the way,
Glenn and Jo did a great job of planning a fun day pulled into the golf
for the group.
course parking lot and
tried to call a few
folks. Eventually got Shane and Jill just as they were driving
by! We elected to go to the second location and meet up with
our folks there.
Soon enough, we
had about 16 folks together
in the Firefighter’s Museum.
We toured the place, got to
learn quite a bit about fire
fighting technology over the
years, and got to visit with
each other as well.
Did you know why
Dalmatians are the mascot
for fire houses? Back in the
days of horse drawn equipment, the dogs would run
ahead of the horses and
chase off any dogs that tried
to bark at or harass the
horses. At the station, the
dogs would live with the
horses so the bond became Shane and Harry seem to be eager to
quite strong.
get a beer in their hands!
Our next place was
the Western Heritage Museum, otherwise formerly the Cowboy
Hall of Fame. We had a tremendous buffet lunch at the Persimmon Hill Restaurant, and the food was EXCELLENT! They had
5 or 6 types of salad, and the main course items ranged from
sliced beef or pork, to assorted casseroles, and several delightful
combinations of chicken and other treats. We gotta go back
there again, it was that good!
It was about this time that the rain started to slack off.
The morning started out a bit cool with heavy rain. By afternoon, it was pleasantly warm and sunny! So it was off to visit

phone.
the 45th Infantry Museum. (By the way, Bill York was a
Sergeant in the 50’s with this unit in Korea!)
There’s no charge to get into this place and it’s
chock full of memorabilia and historic bits and pieces.
The layout of the museum progresses from history into
modern times. If you tried to read every bit of info, we’d
still be at the museum.
There was a separate area dedicated to the legendary cartoonist Bill Mauldin. This guy brought the war
home to folks through the eyes of a couple of regular
GI’s, and the humor was interlaced with good observations of how things really were.
A tip of the COJA hat must go to Glenn and
Jolene for putting together a local day that was fun and
educational. Thanks!
The Dutch Are Coming!...
B
ACK IN AUGUST, I GOT AN EMAIL FROM A
fellow in Holland. Seems that about 20 cars
will be driving Route 66; they start on Oct
5th and are planning to be in Los Angeles on
Oct 21st. Their schedule calls for an overnight in Joplin
with a stay in OKC on the 21st. The Jags in their group
are 2 XK 140SE DHC, 2 XK 150 DHC, and 2 XK8
There’s a Mercedes or two, a Saab and a number of classic Citroen’s.
After several emails back and forth, and coordination with the Tulsa Club, we’ve set up a tentative
schedule for those who’d like to play.
The overview is that we’ll meet the Dutch and
the Tulsa folks at the restaurant they’ll be using for
lunch. We’ll drive along with them as they make a few
stops along ol’ Rt 66 heading for OKC. For OKC folks
that don’t want to go to Tulsa, you can meet the group at
the Round Barn. We’ll then escort them to their hotel.
Dinner for the group will be on an individual
basis, but I plan to invite them to Cattleman’s Steak

On Sunday the 22nd, they are planning to drive old
Rt 66 from OKC to Clinton to visit the Rt 66 Museum there. I
figger COJA folks can drive along with them to Clinton, they
plan to be in Amarillo Sunday night.

Two of the classic Jags that are making the trip...
You’ve probably noticed right off the bat that there
are no times mentioned. That’s because we’ll be operating on
their schedule and I don’t have a clue as to when they’ll make
Tulsa for lunch. I will be in touch with the Tulsa President,
and the Dutch leader has our cell phone numbers, so we’ll be
flying loose!
What I’d like from those that would like to participate:
1.
2.
3.
Let me know you’re going to participate.
Provide me a good cell phone number so I can reach you
on short notice.
Let me know where you plan to join in the schedule...Tulsa, Round Barn, dinner, etc.
I invite you to join in the fun, and I’m sure we can
provide a warm Oklahoma welcome to these guests from Holland!
