I would also like to thank the Sponsors, Exhibitors, Patrons, and the over 500 Volunteers. Without all of you, this Fair would not be the success that it has been for the last 77 years. Over 77 years ago, a small group of men and women decided Brazoria County should form an Association to have an Annual Fair. They set forth as its purpose the following: “To promote the general agricultural, culinary, livestock, horticulture, educational and manufacturing interest, and the general development of the natural resources of the Brazoria County by exhibiting the same at an annual fair.” We are dedicated to keeping the same objective to the new generation of the youth of Brazoria County, as it was in 1938. I hope that your family will join myself and my BCFA family at the 2015 Brazoria County Fair. Matthew A. The Fair Mom contest is not a beauty pageant. It is more complex than that. It honors candidates for their contributions to family and the community. This year’s contest will be held Friday, Oct. 10, from 8-10 p.m. in the auditorium. It is an event to recognize and honor outstanding mothers. Contestants are judged on their contributions to their communities, children and families. Nominations had to include a 500-word essay explaining why the candidate should be chosed this year’s Fair Mom. The “Kim Kresta Memorial Award” will be given to the Brazoria County Fair Mom in loving memory of Kim Kresta, the 2002 Fair Mom, by her family and friends. Kim was a woman who was a prime example of how to appreciate and live life to the fullest. She was devoted to her husband, Greg, and three children, Clint, Cody, and Kenzie. She was also a hard-working supporter and volunteer of the Fair Association. Kim’s positive spirit, cheerfulness and big smile will be deeply missed but never forgotten. The Fair Mom must reside in the county. She will be required to ride in the fair parade on Saturday, Oct. 11, and participate in events set by the Fair Mom Committee. This year’s event will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The winners will ride in the fair parade, and they may be asked to represent the BCFA at some events. To make sure that the judging is unbiased, the judges will be selected from outside of the county if possible. Contestants should wear western attire for the final judging. Awards will be presented to the winners and the first runner-up. Each contestant will be interviewed and encouraged not to rehearse after arriving at the fairgrounds but at home instead. Contestants will be judged on personality, poise and attire. Good luck to all the participants. This is surely one of the most difficult contests to judge. The Brazoria County Fair Association’s 2014 Little Mister winner was Ander Peterson. Tessa Warner was selected as Little Miss. 2015 winning fair logo artwork Designed by: Mark Hillman - Sweeny Jr. High www.mybulletinnewspaper.com (979) 849-5407 October 6, 2015 THE BULLETIN FAIR ISSUE Page 9 Scarecrow contest adds color, creativity The scarecrow contest always brings a different look to the fair each year. They visualized an event that would provide competition, entertainment, enjoyment, and an opportunity to get together with friends. They wanted to provide a standard of excellence toward which county residents could work, to encourage continued improvement of the equality of life in the area. This was why the first Brazoria County Fair began. Those early leaders would probably be astounded at the evolution of the fair since that first one in 1910. They could hardly have envisioned a 120-acre fairground dotted with permanent buildings, including a huge covered arena, the site of a multi-faceted, nine-day annual event attracting almost a quarter of a million people. History of the “modern” Brazoria County Fair begins in 1938, when Angleton Jaycees took over operation of several of the annual events. Although no fair organization officially existed that year, Jack Phillips of West Columbia recalls that “a little exhibition of livestock was held…and the ladies showed their jams and jellies” on the courthouse lot. Phillips, who missed only one Brazoria County Fair since 1938 until his death – he was attending the Olympics in Mexico City during the 1968 fair – served as president of the fair in 1957, 1967, and 1968. After formation of the Brazoria County Fat Stock and Fair Association, the group bought a 20-acre fig orchard south of Angleton for use as fairgrounds. By 1947, another 30 acres had been added to the site, and throughout the years, more land has been bought and paid out as it became available. The fair was canceled for three years during World War II, and the property was leased to the U.S. government as the site for a U.S. Signal Corps radar unit. After a little more than a year, however, the government decided to utilize the facilities as a prisoner of war camp. A high fence topped with rows of barbed wire was placed around the property, with guard towers built at the corners. German war prisoners were moved to the site. At one time, 200 of Rommel’s crack North African Troops were among the prisoners housed there. Those who wanted to work for small wages helped area farmers in cotton or rice harvesting and other chores. Several of these former prisoners have visited Angleton in recent years, bringing their families to see where they were incarcerated and where they waded through muddy rice fields or stooped for hours to pick cotton. With the war’s end, the grounds were returned to the fair association for use, and in the years since, in good times and bad, in economic slumps and following devastating hurricanes, the fair has grown and expanded to the point that it is now the largest county fair in Texas. All contestants will receive a ribbon. Trophies will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in each category. As your children compete, make sure to video and take photos of them. They’ll appreciate it when they get older, even if they cannot recall the event at age 1 or 2. www.mybulletinnewspaper.com (979) 849-5407 October 6, 2015 THE BULLETIN FAIR ISSUE Page 19 Page 20 THE BULLETIN FAIR ISSUE October 6, 2015 www.mybulletinnewspaper.com (979) 849-5407
