A MESSAGE FROM CAROLE
“There is no place like home.”
What drew me the most to the story of The Wizard of Oz were the
themes of family (both the ones we are born into and the ones we
are drawn to throughout our lives) and the meaning of ‘home’.
For all that this is a classic tale Dorothy is very much a modern
youth, struggling to find who she is and what is her ‘home’. She
wants to escape, and goes on an incredible journey to discover
that what she is searching for is already there.
L. Frank Baum’s tale of a spunky girl who goes on an incredible journey started as a series
of books, then became a much celebrated motion picture, then a stage musical. It has
inspired many more tales, from Return to Oz to the current phenomenon that is Wicked. The
tale of a little girl and her four-legged companion who go over the rainbow, meet some
wonderful friends, take on the Wicked Witch, and then return to their family appeals to our
sense of adventure, and the warmth and comfort of home is one to which we can all relate.
Our 2012/13 season is lovingly dedicated to our dear friend, colleague and volunteer
Cheryl Hutcherson. Cheryl had a very special way of making us all feel like we were home,
and that she was part of our family. She was a lover of musical theatre and will always be
with the Vancouver theatre community, like a handprint on our hearts.

SYNOPSIS
Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas with her Auntie Em and
Uncle Henry. After their neighbour Miss Gultch threatens
to take away the family dog Toto, Dorothy and Toto make
plans to run away from home.
A tornado strikes, and when the storm is finished, Dorothy
discovers that she and her house have landed in
Munchkinland, on top of the Wicked Witch of the East.
And for some magic reasons, ruby slippers are now on
Dorothy’s feet. The Wicked Witch of the West arrives and
sees that Dorothy is wearing the Wicked Witch of the
East’s powerful slippers. The Wicked Witch of the West
vows that she will get the slippers from Dorothy- no matter what.
After the Wicked Witch of the West leaves, Dorothy realizes the danger and has no choice
but to leave Munchkinland in search of the Emerald City to ask the great and powerful Oz
to send her home. During their journey Dorothy and Toto meet three special friends: a
Scarecrow with no brain, a Tin Man with no heart, and a Lion without any courage. Dorothy
suggests to her new friends that they come along with her and ask the Wizard of Oz to
grant them their wish. On the way, they meet crabby apple trees, some wickedly enchanted
poppies, and many misfortunes.
When Dorothy and the gang finally meet the great and powerful
Oz he promises to help them... but only after they bring back the
Wicked Witch of the West’s broomstick. The friends head to the
evil Witch’s castle through the Haunted Forest. While walking
through the spooky forest Dorothy and Toto are stolen away by
the flying monkeys and swooped off to the castle.
While Dorothy is trapped in the
Witch’s castle the door crashes
open and her three friends appear
dressed in Winkie uniforms! Before
they can escape the Witch appears. Dorothy throws a bucket
of water on the Witch, who melts away leaving only her hat
and broom.
The friends return to the Wizard to hand him the Wicked Witch
of the West’s broom. Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and
Lion learn the truth about the Wizard and about themselves.
Dorothy learns the most important lesson of all - she had
the power to return home the entire time, all she had to do was believe.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
L. Frank Baum is an American Author of children’s literature. He
is best known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written in 1900,
but can also be credited for his 55 novels, 9 sequences, 82 short
stories, 200 poems, and countless scripts.
Baum was born May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, New York where
he lived with his mother and father and nine siblings. He was
home schooled his entire life and was never one to go out and
roll in the grass. At a young age he took an interest in literature.
He began to take old classics and turn the old and grim story
into a pleasant fairytale that children could relate too.
Baum started his education at the age of 25 in New York City studying theatre. He then
worked in the New York theatre community for a few years as an Opera Theatre Manager
and continued writing his own plays that he often performed in, such as The Maid of Arran
(1882). In 1883 Baum decided to leave the theatre community in New York and move with
his wife, Maud Gage, to South Dakota where they would later raise four children. In South
Dakota, Baum opened a family run department store that failed, was publisher of a
newspaper, Saturday Pioneer, that failed, and then moved to Chicago in search of more
financial success, which also failed. It was then that Baum started writing the nursery stories
that he read to his children. In 1887 Mother
Goose in Prose was published; it became
the best-selling book of the year with an
estimated 175,000 copies sold.
In 1900 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was
published and was adapted into a musical
in 1903. At that point, Baum gave up on
any other business venture and focused
solely on his writing.
The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation of L.
Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
which has since been published countless
times. This special story evokes laughter
and tears and also challenges the audience
to explore the difficult themes of love,
endurance, personal character and self
acceptance.
