WALLER WEEKLY NEWS 09 MAY, 2014 This week the stable was abuzz, celebrating four winners thanks to Trade Commissioner (pictured), Grand Marshal, Boris Badenov and Sense and Reason while also saying Bon voyage to Zoustar as he set off to England. He's now arrived safely and incredibly only lost a few kilos on a journey where it wouldn't be unusual for a horse to lose 20kgs! Ultimately this shows what a cool customer the dual Group 1 winning Northern Meteor colt is. Over the past six weeks as part of our concerted effort to have a stronger presence in the 2yo racing scene next year, we’ve had the pleasure of having batches of Star Thoroughbreds and some of our more precocious youngsters through the stables for their two week long inductions – we’re getting plenty of positive feedback from the riders which is testament to the great job the yearling selection team has done and also what a great job the farms are doing with their early education. From 9.30am – 11.30am on Sunday we will be showcasing four of Star’s yearlings at our Rosehill stables – if you’d like to join us to see these and have a stable tour email [email protected] to RSVP. Trade Commissioner made up for some luckless runs to win the race that counted to fulfil a life-long aim for his connections in winning the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup. Capping a successful trip to the border, stable-mate Beyond Thankful was a courageous second. Trade Commissioner and Beyond Thankful are now enjoying a six week spell at his co-owner Richard Pegum's Range Park property in Scone. GRAND MARSHAL (GB) 4g DANSILI – MARGARULA (DOYOUN) HAWKESBURY 03.05.2014 RICHMOND CLUB PROVINCIAL FINAL (2100M), NECK. Relishing the better ground at Hawkesbury on Saturday, Grand Marshal (pictured below) rounded off his first Australian preparation on a winning note in the $100,000 stayers feature at Hawkesbury. He is now getting his first taste of Aussie paddock life while he enjoys a welldeserved spell. A promising stayer in the making, he will be set for some loftier targets in the spring. BORIS BADENOV 3g MAGIC ALBERT – BADINOV’S BABE (TWIG MOSS) NEWCASTLE 05.05.2014 PINK RACE DAY MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300M), HEAD. Rewarding his patient owners Boris Badenov broke maiden ranks at Newcastle on Tuesday. Still racing a bit immaturely, he was aided by a top Tim Clark ride. There looks to be more to come from this son of Magic Albert as he works on his race craft with his next start yet to be decided. A photo for our cheeky Boris will be in next week’s edition. SENSE AND REASON 3f EXCEED AND EXCEL – DONNA INTELLIGENTE (DEHERE) WARWICK FARM 07.05.2014 MORE THAN READY BM70 (1400M), LONG HEAD. The two 3yo fillies in the stable by Exceed and Excel combined at Warwick Farm on Wednesday for a pleasing result over 1400m. Returning to form, Sense and Reason (right) caught her ultra-consistent stable mate Mamwaazel in the shadows of the post and will now head to Rosehill on the 31st of May for a 3yo fillies 1400m race. RACE PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRADLEY PHOTOGRAPHERS WWW.BRADLEYPHOTOS.COM.AU 3 CHARLIE’S CORNER Englishman Charlie Duckworth joined the team having won the Alex Scott Assistant Trainers Travel Scholarship and after stints assisting at the yearling sales, riding out and assisting around the stables, he’s now accompanied Zoustar to England and will keep us posted on his trip… The mammoth trip to England began at 15:00 Australian time on Sunday. We arrived at the airport an hour later to catch a flight at 18:00 with Zoustar already dressed in his compression suit. A compression suit promotes circulation - it was famously worn by Black Caviar when she flew to run at Royal Ascot. The cargo flight to Hong Kong was a little over 9 hours long. Zoustar had to share his crate with an Australian dressage horse called SS Dante (pictured below) who is competing in the World Championships in Germany at the start of August. The crate can be divided into three but luckily but was only split between the two of us giving each horse one and a half stalls. The dressage horse was the first to load and then they saw the mighty Zoustar come down the float ramp and so they asked me straight away - "is that a thoroughbred?" in a disapproving manner, as thoroughbreds have a terrible reputation for being live wires. Both horses loaded impeccably and within seconds there was some banging and stamping coming from within the crate and not to my surprise, it was not Zoustar! The crate is then pushed along on rollers and raised up into the shell of the plane. In the crate the horses are tied up and have hay, water and anything else they could possibly need. On that leg of the journey there wasn't much cargo which was nice for the horses as they could see more of the plane. The air conditioning on the plane was set to 15 degrees Celsius. When we landed in Hong Kong the horses remained on the plane, while more cargo was loaded not leaving a spare inch. We then flew to Dubai, another 8 hours in the air and the horses remained calm and ate and drank plenty and Zoustar's temperature stayed stable. Unfortunately, due to a mix up of some 'special' cargo, our flight was delayed and we were stuck on the tarmac for close to 6 hours in 40 degrees - thank goodness for air conditioning! CHRIS WALLER RACING Eventually when we took off, it was only 6 hours to Frankfurt and all went very smoothly. Upon arrival there, we were promptly unloaded from the plane which Zoustar took in his stride peering out of the window. We then had to go through the usual procedure at Customs which is where the dressage horse left us, before heading on to a Veterinary Clinic just outside Frankfurt. When we arrived at the Clinic it was now about 23:00 on Monday night, the vet commented that she had never seen a horse so bright eyed and bushy tailed after such a long trip. He had a 5 litter saline drip to help him overcome the strenuous journey and then he had a decent walk to stretch his legs finishing up at about 01:00. I caught a few hours sleep and then went to give Zoustar his breakfast at about 06:00 and he had eaten every crumb of his midnight feast. I then gave him another decent walk before being picked up at 14:00 by a float half of which had been converted into a portable stable, so he could eat, drink and walk around. We then travelled through Germany, Holland and Belgium and finally arrived at Calais to get on the Eurotunnel to England. We then had our final customs inspection which took about 2 hours and the last leg of this humungous journey was underway, reaching Lambourn at 06:00 GMT on Wednesday 7 May! I look forward to updating you next week on Zoustar’s English adventure. 5 GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM – ANDREW CLARKEN Andrew grew up in a racing family and was indentured as an apprentice to John Letts in Adelaide.
