A New President and Board of Directors Take Office
On September 22nd The Optimist Club of San
Antonio held its annual Installation Dinner at Crumpet’s
Restaurant and Bakery. New Officers were inducted for
the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2015. Optimists enjoyed an evening full of entertainment by Hawaiian Hula
Dancers, Awards and speeches by our outgoing President
Jim Hollerbach and incoming President Lance Leone.
The Optimist club honored Janet Martinez as
New Outstanding Member of the year and presented her
with the Rocky Rockstroh New Outstanding Member
Award for going above and beyond in her efforts in supporting the Youth in our community and in furthering
Optimism through the Optimist Club of San Antonio.
Patsy Greeman was awarded the Optimist of the Year
Award for her continued service in promoting Optimism
and supporting the Youth in our community through our
programs with Boysville and RMYA.
Lt. Governor Jack Hopkins and wife Faye were our guests at
the dinner. Lt. Jack Hopkins advised that in the Southwest Region of Optimist International where Jan Oord Graves is Vice
President of OI, membership is above average compared to past
years. Also, Governor Irvin G. Williams has ranked as number
one Governor all year and expected to end the year on top. He
congratulated the Optimist Club of San Antonio for finishing
the year as a Distinguished Optimist Club. He stated that these
were all “Sweet Deals” for the South Texas District. He congratulated President Jim Hollerbach and his team for the accomplishments. He then inducted and swore into office our officers
for 2015-2016. President Lance Leone, President Elect Stanley
Winchester, Vice Presidents Helen Jacobs and Stan Winchester,
Treasurer Terry Cleveland, Secretary Julie Strentzsch, Chaplin
Mike Litwin, and Sergeant at Arms Jan Oord Graves. Incoming
President Lance Leone presented his speech quoting the following from President George Washington’s inaugural address.
The Past and Future!
“Among the vicissitudes incident to life no event could have
filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your order, and received on the 14th
day of the present month. On the one hand, I was summoned by
my Country, whose voice I can never hear but with veneration

and love, from a retreat which I had chosen with the fondest predilection, and, in my flattering hopes, with
an immutable decision, as the asylum of my declining years--a retreat which was rendered every day more
necessary as well as more dear to me by the addition of habit to inclination, and of frequent interruptions in
my health to the gradual waste committed on it by time”. And “ To the foregoing observations I have one to
add, which will be most properly addressed to the House of Representatives. It concerns myself, and will
therefore be as brief as possible. When I was first honored with a call into the service of my country, then
on the eve of an arduous struggle for its liberties, the light in which I contemplated my duty required that I
should renounce every pecuniary compensation. From this resolution I have in no instance departed; and
being still under the impressions which produced it, I must decline as inapplicable to myself any share in
the personal emoluments which may be indispensably included in a permanent provision for the executive
department”.

Poem Recitals by the Leone Children
Elias Neujahr said that he was amongst his own
people. A true optimist at heart, an inherited trait
from his mother and grandmother. He said that as
president of the Children’s hospital of San Antonio, he stands on the shoulders of giants like Dr.
Al Sanders and others who have forged the path
before him. “At the Children’s Hospital,” he
stated, “we want to make people great. We empower our teams to develop leaders in every area
of medicine to provide the best possible care for
each child and family that we serve.” His vision
for the children’s hospital is to be a radiation of
light and hope for the city of San Antonio. They
are working with doctors and making strives to
get patients into visits in a timely fashion and provide the best possible care by providing a team of
medical professionals that will cater to all areas of
medicine within their facilities. They are working
on putting family children’s clinics in key areas
around the city with active recruitment of professionals underway. The goal is to take care of
Children, Mom and Babies.
Optimist members had a rare treat on Tuesday when President Lance Leone introduced his children Sophia Reese
Leone who bravely quoted the poem “The Eagle” to our members. Then younger brother Brett Edward Leone
presented the poem “Once I Saw a Little Bird”. Both presented their poems with confidence and articulation.
