THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT ON THE PREMISE THAT
YOU, ARE THE FIRST RESPONDER. UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN
SECONDS COUNT, A POLICE RESPONSE IS MINUTES AWAY
The PCT 3 Constable’s Office, Mark Vojvodich, Constable will be conducting this class on the Active Shooter for The Optimist Club and Friends on
March 1, 2016. Please invite anyone interested to this important meeting.
An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to
kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active
shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of
victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.
This course is for all persons, individuals, HOA’s, PTO/PTAs, churches,
schools, businesses, licensed to carry or not and will cover the basics of survival, weapons typically used (firearms, knives and explosives) and is designed to increase your safety by awareness of the warning signs and having
a plan to act should the unthinkable occur.

A Message From the President
Team Optimist,
It was another great week to be an Optimist.
This weeks speaker was so motivating. Superintendent Pedro Martinez took the time to look at the larger pictures of the importance
of education and then also pointed out how to much education in
the wrong direction may be a waste. His goals for the SAISD were
well outlined in the handout and I look forward to working with
him in the future as we keep America great by supporting our youth
through mentoring and good citizen programs.
I look forward to seeing you at our meeting on Tuesday. This week
we are discussing ways to best prepare our surroundings for the
unlikely but scary active shooter situation.
I have had this training before and promise it will leave you with an
optimistic opinion of dealing with one of these situations.
Have a great weekend!
Your Current President,
Lance D Leone

SAISD Education -The Five Year Plan
SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez has set
his sights on Excellence in Education for the
district. He has been tasked with transforming
SAISD into a national model for other urban
school districts. Under his leadership, the district is in the process of redefining excellence
for all students, so that many more students
achieve a higher level of education and preparation for success in college and career.
The Blueprint for Excellence: Target 2020 is
about developing lifelong learners who graduate
equipped and empowered to pursue their individual dreams. The SAISD is drawing upon best
practices to raise academic expectations for all
students and evaluate teaching in all classrooms. They are working to build five pillars
to provide the support and resources needed to
ensure students meet the achievement points in
Talent Management, Culture Shift, Academic
Excellence, Stakeholder Engagement, and Fiscal Management.
Academic Excellence will be the most visible
strategy as students and parents become aware
of increased opportunities for advanced learning. A significant change will be enhancing the
Gifted and Talented services by expanding college-preparatory International Baccalaureate program, building
more pre-Advanced Placement courses into the middle school years and raising the bar at the high school level
so students take more advanced courses, including more dual-credit courses. Dual Credit courses will allow
the student the opportunity to graduate high school with up to 45 hours of college credit starting in 2020. This
will allow students a smooth transition from high school to higher education.
President Lance Leone and
Superintendent of SAISD Pedro Martinez
The SAISD will be managing talent by hiring teachers earlier to ensure a larger pool of teachers to choose
from thus increasing the chances of securing top talent. They are also implementing professional growth and
development to continually challenge and motivate the existing employees. This will allow for advancement
into leadership throughout the district.
SAISD’s ambitious plans for talent management, and all other components of this blueprint , hinge on the ability to build a systemic culture of high expectations and consistent accountability, for students and staff. Shifting culture is an on-going process that will take years to achieve but Martinez states “We are all in”. The 5year goals for academic excellence are a testament to true commitment.
