President’s August Message
Optimists
As an Optimist member, I should
state that our summer is “halffull”. But with what’s coming up
in August, maybe that’s an understatement.
Optimist Bill Dowdell has a
schedule to fill, and needs all
hands on deck for our Peach
Festival Booth. As usual, we will be setting up on Thursday, August 22nd. But we need help all weekend long. Come out and
meet some new people, promote Optimism and most of all, have
fun.
Can’t wait to see you all in August.

2012 ‘Optimist Deli’
August
Wednesday 7th - Board of Directors meeting - 6:30 at the Hall
Winona Peach Festival - August 23,24,25. The ‘Optimist Deli’ is a fun place to be!!
But, in addition to the three days of operation, we need help (ie muscle) on Thursday
August 22 and Monday August 26 for set-up and tear down.
September
Wednesday 4th - Board of Directors meeting—6:30 at the hall
Wednesday 11th - Optimist Dinner Meeting - meet and greet at 6:30, dinner at 7:00
Wednesday 25th - Optimist Dinner Meeting - meet and greet at 6:30, dinner at 7:00
Our final meet for the 2012/2013 year.

Notices
Optimist Nelson Latimer will have a celebration of his birthday on Saturday,
August 10 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice at 277 Stone
Church Rd. East (corner of Upper Wellington and Stone Church). It’s a comeand-go gathering. Well wishes and cards only. Nelson will welcome everyone.

We are very sorry to report the recent passing of Optimist Frank O’Brien.
Although not recently active, he has been a member since 1959. Flowers
have been sent to his wife Vera on behalf of the Optimist Club of Stoney
Creek.
And, we are very sorry to hear of the passing of Optimist Julie Torry’s son
after a lengthy fight with cancer. Flowers will be sent to Optimist Julie on
behalf of the Optimist Club of Stoney Creek.

Congratulations!!
Pauline Bal is our representative for the Winona Peach Festival and
we are happy to say that she was chosen the second runner up and
is now crowned a 2013 Princess for the Festival as announced at
the Annual Grand Peach Ball on July 19. She also won the Suzanne
Erskine Legacy Award. Pauline is a Grade 12 honour roll student at
Orchard Park and will be attending in September the University of
Waterloo to become a Pharmacist.

2013 Peach Festival News
As you all know, the Winona Peach Festival is the major fund
raiser for our Club. It is a major undertaking involving hundreds of man hours - setting up the ‘Deli’, serving customers
for 3 days, dismantling everything and returning equipment to
the hall.
‘The Ditch’ is pleased to report that Optimist Bill Dowdell has
worked diligently over the past weeks and has managed to fill
the 180+ shifts for the Friday/Saturday/Sunday. Optimtist Bill
will be sending out notices to everyone with their shift(s) identified.

Any members who have not yet notified Optimist Bill can still
do so - spare help is always welcome to provide periodic relief.

still need
‘muscle’ for Thursday August 22 to help take all
the equipment from the hall and set up the ‘Deli’ at the park.
The work force will meet at the hall at 12:00 noon, load up the
truck and other vehicles, proceed to the park, unload and set
up.
