A MONTHLY BULLETIN OF THE GARDENA EVENING OPTIMIST CLUB
ZONE 2 – PACIFIC SOUTHWEST DISTRICT OF OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL
President’s Message —
May was a full month for the
Club. First of all, at our first
members’ meeting, we had the
honor and pleasure of meeting
with all of our past and present
Nisei Queens along with their
parents, and then we crowned
our 2014 Nisei Queen, Ms.
Tiffany Hashimoto. Thanks to Terry Weber, Jill
Hiraizumi, Lauren Iwata and Lauren Weber for
putting on a wonderful program. Next, we had our
monthly Board of Directors Meeting to conduct club
business and planning as we look for ways and
opportunities to continue to support of our youth.
Then to top off the month, we had our Respect for
Law Dinner which was well attended by Torrance and
Gardena Police Departments along with a lot of
explorers from both communities. Thanks to Terry
Terauchi for another great job as chairman and Master
of Ceremonies. In between there was Mother’s Day. I
hope that all the mothers out there had a great day and
were appropriately honored and pampered by your
families.
Looking forward to the summer, we are now getting
ready for the JCI Carnival on the last weekend in
June. Justin Carroll, has begun holding meetings to
get the Ho’olaule’a planned and to make it even more
successful than last year. Also Bill Coonce is working
on planning our next golf tournament which is set for
August 31st at Lakewood Country Club. Looks like
another busy summer for the Club. Let’s have some
fun. Thank you all for all of your hard work and
continued support. Without you, we wouldn’t be able
to undertake all these activities.
Yours In Optimism,
Charles “Zee” Zimmer

Respect For Law
Youth Tennis League
The Evening Optimist Club of Gardena held its
annual Respect for Law Banquet on May 20, 2014 at
Cozymel’s Mexican Seafood Restaurant in El
Segundo. It was a cozy setting with about 55 people
in attendance. The food was excellent, as usual, and
the wine was fine. We were honored with the
presence of Gardena Police Chief Ed Medrano who
added distinction to our rowdy club.
The Spring 2014 Season wrapped up on Saturday,
May 10th, with an Awards Luncheon at Arthur
Johnson Park Community Room. Players, coaches
and parents were all present to watch the little ones
receive their trophy's, individual player pictures and
of course enjoy the pizza party. It truly is an amazing
thing to watch the development and enrichment of
these youngsters’ tennis skills and individual
sportsmanship skills. If you were unable to volunteer
for GEO youth tennis spring season, fear not. GEO
Youth tennis Fall season will be a perfect
opportunity for you to come see what we are all
about. We had 28 kids in the spring season and are
looking forward to growing that number for the fall.
If you know of anyone who may be interested in
playing or volunteering in the fall, you can drop us
an email: [email protected]
The turnout from the Police Explorer program for
the cities of Gardena and Torrance was amazing.
These young men and ladies who have shown
leadership and commitment to their respective
communities came out to show their support of the
honorees; Edward Pedroza (UCLA-bound) from
the Gardena Police Explorer Program, and Greg
Vincent (Math major) from the Torrance Police
Explorer Program. Our president, Charles Zimmer,
did the honors of presenting these young men with
the Optimist Certificates of Appreciation.
George Bird, a criminal defense attorney in the
South Bay and a city councilman from the City of
Palos Verde Estates, was the guest speaker. He
spoke of leadership and commitment to the
community to these young leaders of tomorrow.
M.C. Terry Terauchi didn’t screw up too badly,
only a few minor glitches. Special thanks to
Jeanette Mena for doing so much (as usual) in
organizing this event. Kudos goes to Eddie Herrera
for making sure that our club banners arrived on
time. Sympathy to poor Ron Shintani, who had to
pay for the dinner. And finally, thanks to Ed Kambe
for the wonderful programs.

PROMISE YOURSELF:
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you
meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in
them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your
optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to
expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you
are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater
achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every
living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that
you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for
fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
