Lighting of the Trees
The Optimist Club of Greenville was selected to participate in
the third annual Greenville Gives and Tree Lighting Ceremony on
Friday, December 6, 2013. Beth Clem represented the club at the
event held from 5-8 p.m. at Five Points Plaza in downtown
Greenville. Other charities benefiting from the event were: The
Easter Seals, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Pitt County Animal Shelter. The evening of holiday celebrations included music, refreshments and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Christmas Dinner
Members of the Optimist Club of Greenville and their spouses/guests enjoyed an evening
of good food, dessert, fellowship, singing, and entertainment at their annual Christmas Dinner.
Tables were decorated with candles and poinsettias. President Curtis Hardee called the meeting to order and after dinner turned the program over to Ellen Ross who coordinated the evening of entertainment. Ellen asked the group to share what their meaning Christmas was, she
read “T’was the Night Before Christmas,” and shared the history of poinsettia and why it is used
at Christmas. Ed Moore read the Christmas Story from the Bible. Beth Clem conducted a
“T’was the Night Before Christmas” game with prizes. Lou Anna Hardee led the group in
singing. Several members were presented door prizes of poinsettias prior to adjournment. Beth
Clem offered a photo session to all members prior to their departure. Everyone had a wonderful
time!

North Carolina East District News
The First Quarter NC East District Meeting was held at the Country Inn and Suites in
Wilson, North Carolina, on November 7-8, 2013. On Friday night, there was an auction to raise
funds for the Boys and Girls Home in Lake Waccamaw, NC.
On Saturday morning, the General Business Session was held followed by lunch and
training in the afternoon. Sandy Cyphers presented a session on Personal Growth and Improvement while Barbara Timmons conducted a session on Membership Magic. Sessions were
conducted concurrently and were well attended by members.
The Second Quarter NC East District Meeting will be held at the Hampton Inn and
Suites in Wilson, NC, on February 14-15, 2014. An auction is planned for Friday evening which
will benefit the OI Foundation. The annual Awards Luncheon will be held and training will follow in the afternoon.
Essay Contest
The Optimist Club of Greenville is now accepting applications for their annual Essay
Contest. The contest is open to high school students under the age of 18 as of December 31,
2013. All applications for the essay contest must be received by February 1, 2014. The official
topic for the essay contest is: “How Dreams Lead to Success.” The essay must be between
700 and 800 words in length. The winner of the club contest will be entered into the District
Contest.

Oratorical Contest
Ellen Ross is coordinating the club’s Oratorical Contest which is planned for March. She is checking on the
availability of Wahl Coates School Auditorium and has distributed information to the local schools.
The contest will be a combined gender contest and the
two top speakers will advance to the Zone 3 Oratorical Contest in Goldsboro. Winners of the Zone 3 contest will advance to the NC East District competition.
