SAILING AND THE OPTIMIST CLASS IN ARGENTINA
Argentina has an enduring sailing
tradition and has been the cradle of
many sailing celebrities, not only
sailors,
like

member of the Club Náutico San
Isidro- but also boat designers like
Germán Frers and, of recent fame,
Juan Kouyoumdjian. There are many
active classes, some international,
some local, most of them with a
demanding calendar of races.
Plenty of sailing clubs and some municipalities offer sailing courses for children and adults,
making the activity accessible for people of all social backgrounds. Every weekend the river is
crossed by hundreds of boats of all types and sizes.
The Optimist Class was introduced in the country around 1970. Since then, the fleet has been
growing steadily, breeding 8 World Champions and more than 20 South American
Champions, to mention some titles. Today the Association has around 250 active members
who participate in championships organised every weekend 10 months a year.

SAN ISIDRO, THE CITY
San Isidro is a city to the North of Buenos Aires, capital city of Argentina, approximately 47 km
away from Ezeiza International Airport and 20 km away from the centre of Buenos Aires. Its
leafy avenues, the steep hill overlooking the river, huge gardens, cobblestone streets, the
Cathedral and XIX century villas, are a ʻtrademarkʼ of the city. Together with museums,
modern shopping centers, and restaurant strips they have made the city a major tourist
attraction.

RIO DE LA PLATA, THE RACING AREA
The Rio de la Plata, known as River Plate in some English speaking countries, is an estuary
of approximately 290 km long and a maximum width of 220 km at its mouth. The distance
between the coasts where the race area sits is approximately 50 km so the other coast is not
visible from the race area. Two are the main features of the river: its brown colour, due to river
sedimens, and its shallowness: the average depth in the race area is two metres.

Sailing Conditions
September to December (Spring time in the Southern hemisphere) are the windiest months of
the year. The wind speed can range from 8 to 25 knots, with an average of 10-12 knots after
midday. Depending on the wind direction the river can be flat or wavy, with waves of
maximum 1 m high (when the wind blows from the South East)

Facilities
The Club Náutico San
Isidro is one of the key
institutions when referring
to the sports of sailing in
Argentina.
It
has
extensive facilities for the
practice of sailing, as well
as of other sports such as
golf, tennis and swimming. Founded in 1910, it is a club for the family, run by people who
share the love for the club with their fathers and sons. As such, it promotes familiar activities
and has plenty of areas to enjoy with the family and friends.
