The Wolves ended last season at 5-5 for the year, and 2-2 in district play, putting them in a tie for second place and sending them to the playoffs after a one-year absence. They are hoping to improve on that record this year. Overall, the Golden Wolves will be a fairly young team, as they are not returning many starters on offense, and just a few more on defense. The team has quite a few juniors and seniors, but most of them were either backups last year or on the JV team. The Wolves will have to replace both offensive production and defensive contributions from some of last year’s seniors who have now graduated. There are also a number of talented sophomores who have moved up to varsity after just one year in high school. The Wolves will have five non-district games to get the experience they need before district play begins. Fortunately, after the opener at Borger tonight, there will be three straight home games in early September against Spearman, River Road and Guymon, Okla., which will also be homecoming for the Wolves. Hopefully, the home crowds during the early games will give the team an extra boost as they gain experience. Read said, “There is a definite change in speed from JV to varsity.” Those early games will hopefully prepare those players who are coming up from junior varsity for that change. Following those home games, there will be two more away games against Friona and Pampa, followed by an open date. Then district play will begin on October 14 at home against Bushland. The district has been slightly revamped. Much of the Wolves’ offensive production graduated last spring, so other players will need to step up and fill some big shoes for the Wolves to be successful this year. Fortunately, one starter who is returning is senior quarterback Jesse Lujan. Having an experienced leader to run the offense should help the younger guys as they get adjusted to starting or just playing of varsity. Unfortunately, Lujan will miss at least the first game with an injury, so backup sophomore Ryan Bornemeier will be gaining some experience early in the season. The starting running backs this year will be seniors Matt Castillo and Noah Martinez. They will be backup up by seniors DJ Petties and Cameron Melendez. Head coach Joey Read said that he hopes to use the passing game more this season, so the receivers will also be key to the Wolves’ prospects. Senior Hayden Wilkerson and junior Kodiak Martinez will start at wide receiver, and seniors Braydon Barrow and Wyatt Hicks will also see playing time at the receiver position. The starting tight end will be junior Harrison Fly, and he’ll be backed up by junior Cody Alexander. The offensive line will need to protect Lujan in the passing game and open up holes for the running game. The starters on the line will be seniors Jaidan Puga, Casey Stewart, and Zack Jones along with juniors Ryan Ortiz, and Frank Gallegos. Seniors Iyan Perez, Miko Belgira, Elias Deleon, and Nixie Sanderson/The Dalhart Texan Dalhart’s offense had their first test of the season August 13 in Stratford as they traveled See OFFENSE on page 5B to the first of their two pre-season scrimmages this year. The Wolves run a base 3-4 defense, with D.J. Wright returning as the defensive coordinator for the second straight year. Six starters are returning from last year to anchor the defense. They are seniors Jesse Lujan, Matt Castillo, Jaidan Puga, DJ Petties and Devon Limas, along with junior Kodiak Martinez. Lujan and Petties will start the season with injuries and so will miss at least the first game of the year. Puga, along with junior Ryan Ortiz and sophomore Brendon Herring, will start on the defensive line this year. Seniors Casey Stewart and Miko Belgira and junior Frank Gallegos will back them up. Castillo and junior Cody Alexander will start at inside linebacker for the Wolves, and will be backed up by junior Harrison Fly and sophomore Isaiah Canas. At outside linebacker, Martinez will start along with sophomore Payton Galloway. Senior Noah Martinez is one backup, and Petties will also play outside linebacker after he returns from his injury. Starting in the secondary this year for the Wolves will be senior Elmer Alvarado and sophomores Ethan Sneller, Ryan Bornemeier, and Carson Smith. Lujan and Limas will be in the secondary after they return from injury, and seniors Braydon Barrow, Wyatt Hicks, and Hayden Wilkerson will also get playing time. Hopefully they can remain healthy throughout the season and make another trip to the playoffs. While the offense is young and somewhat inexperienced, head coach Joey Read said that he expects lots of improvement after a few games, which should have the Wolves ready to go in October when the first district game rolls around. Along with those returning, Wright said, “The newcomers are getting better every week.” So the Wolves should be in fairly good shape by the time they get to their district games. Practice started with two-a-days August 1, and the team was at their first scrimmage in Caprock August 5. Their first games of the season were on the road with Highland Park and Palo Duro, and since that time, the team has been busy with tournaments. Most recently, the Lady Wolves were in Amarillo for the Red River Tournament, where the varsity came home as tournament champions. Today and tomorrow, the varsity team will be in Wolfforth for the Frenship Tournament, and the freshman team will be in Dumas for their final tournaments of the season. The Lady Wolves have just over a week for rest and practice before play resumes. With only four home games this season, the team will log plenty of miles as they make their way through the regular season play. Last year, the Lady Wolves made it to the playoffs as a number two seed in the district with a record of 7-3. Dalhart Texan thedalharttexan.com Page 7B Friday, August 26, 2016 Fall Sports Golden Wolves band marching into season BY CHARLIE ROWELL THE DALHART TEXAN Every year, in anticipation for the upcoming football season, the Dalhart high school band begins rehearsal for the mid-game halftime show. Jim and Nicole Pasley have been running the program at the high school for five years thus far and have had major success at a competitive level. In May, the school district brought on Joshua Bell, a recent grad of South Western Oklahoma State University near Tulsa, Okla. This is Bell’s first year of teaching and he has high hopes for the band this year. He believes to that for the band to strive, they must “try their hardest and not settle for mediocrity.” The band has seemed to accept him into the program with open arms. For the 2016 season, the band will be performing “The Warriors” by Randall Standridge. The five part show is currently being rehearsed by the band every weekday. Preliminary numbers for the band is currently 118 students. The year is especially important for the band because it is possible for them to advance past the first stage of the UIL marching competition. UIL has in regulation that bands can only advance every other year. The young band and new staff believe they have what it takes to go the distance. Ivy Hollingsworth/The Dalhart Texan Practice for the 2016 marching season began for the Dalhart Golden Wolves band August 1. This year’s show will be “The Warriors,” with Yareth Lozano (top right) as drum major. Good luck to all our area athletes. Dalhart cheerleaders ready for start of fall sports season BY BILL KELLY THE DALHART TEXAN Going to a football game wouldn’t be nearly as much fun if the football teams were the only ones involved in the action. Fortunately, in high school football there are also the bands, pep squads and other students yelling in the stands, and of course, the cheerleaders. Dalhart High School actually has two separate cheerleading squads, a junior varsity squad and a varsity squad. They combine together for pep rallies and to cheer at home games for football, volleyball, and basketball. The junior varsity squad cheers at home nonvarsity games, and the varsity squad cheers at both home and away games for varsity teams. The varsity cheerleaders for this year are Marley Ames, Bri Cruz, Olivia Garcia, Gracie King, Faith Lindsey, Elissa Turner, Lexi Posey, and Hannah Wilkerson. Sidney Fahnert is also a member of the varsity squad as the mascot. The junior cheerleaders are Isabelle Bruce, Mackenzie Crosby, Vanessa Huaracha, Nia Marquez, Elizabeth Montes, Loree Simmons, and Kenadee Walker. The cheerleaders have a new sponsor this year, Natalie Garcia, who moved from teaching at the elementary to teaching at the high school. Garcia is very excited about the upcoming year. “I enjoy the girls, and we’re going to have a lot of fun this year.” Garcia said. There are five pep rallies this year, and the public is invited to attend. Four of them are on the Friday afternoon of home games, at 3:15 p.m. in the high school gym (this is a change from last year due to the longer school day.) The other one will be the night before homecoming (Sept. 15) at Memorial Stadium, following the junior high football games. The homecoming pep rally is always a special event, and will hopefully attract a large crowd. It is followed by the homecoming bonfire out by Rita Blanca Lake. Another special event that is a Dalhart tradition is mini-cheer camp, which is a four-day event in which elementary students are taught some cheers by the high school cheerleaders, and then help out during the first quarter of the game that week. This year’s mini-cheer camp will be held the week of Oct. 14. That will also be the pink-out game. Garcia also said that they are planning to do a minicheer camp for a basketball game as well. Cheerleading requires as much athleticism as most sports, and Dalhart High is lucky to have a talented group of young ladies cheering on their teams. GOOD LUCK LADY WOLVES! A shirt for the cross country team has a quote that said, “Our Sport is Your Sport’s Punishment.” That is a fit description for cross country. Cross country takes a huge commitment from the coach and athletes to stay in long distance running shape. Every Tuesday and Thursday night all summer these athletes meet with their coach and run. And run far. They are also encouraged to run on their own. Coach Stephanie Vogel is starting her tenth year with Dalhart students. She has been the cross country coach for eight Nolan Atha years. On those hot summer nights you will see Vogel running right along side her athletes. This is a component of what makes Vogel’s program so successful. Last year, the boys team was third in district and qualified for regionals for the seventh year in a row. The girl’s team won district for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in seven years. They continued on and are now the fifth best team in the state. Sarah McDaniel was given the All-State team award. She returns this year as a junior. Two of the three returning runners, brothers Austin Birdsong, senior, and Garrett Birdsong, sophomore, both ran at the state meet in Austin last year. Coach Ray Turpin says after only completing two weeks of training says it’s hard to gauge at this point how everyone will do this year, but he says expectations will remain high. “It’s harder to tell with my new runners, although their times have been improving with each practice,” Turpin said. “As long as they keep pushing themselves, I have confidence we’ll be pretty competitive at district and ease right into regionals.” Turpin said the team has been running hills and working on sprints during practices to get ready for their first meet. “The kids say this is the hardest they’ve worked, and that’s exciting to me.” The girls’ varsity team welcomes coach Luke Ogden, Austin Birdsong Garrett Birdsong new to Channing and new to coaching cross-country. Ogden, originally from Perryton, attended and graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. where he played basketball and later returned to coach. Ogden says his firm beliefs in the importance of building a good foundation with the team and teaching fundamentals can span any sport, including cross-country. “I want to show them they can push themselves beyond their own limits,” Ogden said. “With a good attitude and a good fundamental base, which I will be teaching, they can accomplish that and push a little farther and a little harder.” Ogden says he’s seen some improvement in the girls’ times already in practices. “I’m new, and we have some new runners this year. The slate is clean and everyone is on the same page,” Ogden said. “I’ve seen good attitudes so far, and the running times get better everyday.” The first boys and girls varsity meet is scheduled for Saturday, September 3 at Boys Ranch.
