7th. The event took place at First State

this year: 5 and under and 6, 7 and 8. The

between several adorable contestants with
homemade costumes, brightly-colored
hair and painted faces in the 5 and under

began at Legacy Assisted Living facility with
a visit from the XIT Directors, Queen Alyssa Nials,
Queen candidates (Jessica Fischbacher, Shiann
Friese, Jessie Messick,
and Kirsten-Lee Stegall),
and Little Ms. XIT (Bree
Pollard) and Mr. XIT (Branston Potter). This royal
group arrived on Tuesday,
August 5. They spent time
introducing
themselves
and telling about their
jobs/positions with the celebration. The male residents were presented with
official XIT bolo ties. The
women were given corsages made from wild sunflowers with red bandana
bows. The various meals,
activities, and dances were
discussed. Legacy residents had time for questions and thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
Wednesday, August 6th
, kicked off the Morning Cowboy Movie series
with the Magnificent 7 and
fresh donuts. Legacy attended the dress rehearsal
for the XIT Melodrama
–‘The Treasure of Shiver
River’. Thursday’s movie
was Hondo and hot cinnamon rolls. Residents
played a spirited bout of
XIT Bingo. Special XIT
prizes were awarded.
Friday’s movie was Crossfire Trail and blueberry
muffins. In tradition for
XIT, residents enjoyed an
afternoon watermelon feed.
Saturday brought along the
XIT parade – staged right
in front of Legacy! Residents enjoyed seeing the
floats and folks. No celebration would have been
complete without BBQ.
The residents feasted on
genuine XIT BBQ, brought
to the facility, for supper.
Numerous friends and
family members visited
throughout the celebration
weekend.
In keeping with the cowboy theme for August, a
Challenge activity was devoted to the history of the
Pony Express. The Men’s
Club activity is a field trip
to visit the Ferguson Cattle
Company Wagon Shoppe
owned by Jim Ferguson.
Legacy residents enjoyed
all the special treats and
activities.
Little Miss. XIT Bree Pollard and Little Mr. XIT Branston Kole Potter entertain the crowd at Coon Memorial Nursing Home.

ally bucked before she was
able to get into her routine,
but she recovered nicely to
get into her pattern.
“That was kind of a surprise for me in the horsemanship part of it,” Fischbacher said. “I was like,
‘Oh, don’t do this to me
right now,’ but I showed
them that I could control it
and I didn’t get mad, I was
just like, ‘All right, we’ve
just got to calm down and
go.’”
She said the competition
ultimately came down to
the horsemanship in her
mind and that is what gave
her the edge in the competition. Her adeptness running the poles was clearly
enough to give her the lead
in the end.
She really did need it, because she said she felt she
initially stumbled in the
initial round of the competition, which was the question and answer portion
with the judges.
“I knew after the first
question that I had kind of
confused myself and the
judges, so I was like ‘Oh
no, I really need to fix that
real quick,’ but I was just
so nervous that I was like
‘Oh, my goodness,” she
said.
Her horsemanship was
wonderful in her own pattern and that was enough
to overcome her question
and answer round.
She had to have a ride
well enough to beat out KLee Stegall’s knowledge
of the event which, was
clearly extensive, Shiann
Friese’s demeanor which
was heartwarming and Jessie Messick’s personality
which brought announcer
Kelly Kenney to tears.
Each and every one of
the girls could have won
the competition. Stegall
came in as the runner-up
despite being the youngest competitor and Friese
and Messick each had convincing showings of their
own, but ultimately, Fischbacher did enough on
horseback to come away
with the win.
She was at a loss for
words after her victory,
just one year after she had
come in second-place to
Alyssa Nials in the Queen
competition.
“I am just so ecstatic, I
don’t know what to say,”
she said. “I was just so happy, the first thing I could
do was just look at my dad
because without their support I couldn’t have done
any of this, without anyone’s support actually.
“I was so nervous I made
myself sick through this
whole thing, but it was
well worth it.”

Caprock proving

has played more than any
other in their entire history, Bushland is a budding
rivalry that will be sure to
get more intense now that
the Falcons have joined
the district and River Road
simply doesn’t like Dalhart which always creates
alhart has their rivals.
Perryton is the obvious one because they have
been in the same district
so long, Guymon is the
not so obvious one, but See CAPROCK on page B6

hile Dalhart may underestimate Caprock, they are never
going to take a school like Amarillo
High for granted.
There is no one in the panhandle,
or for that matter the state of Texas
that takes Amarillo High for granted.
The Lady Sandies are coming off
of the 4A state title from a year ago
and return multiple starters this season that can attack from the front,
the back, the middle and most likely
from the rafters with verticals that
have to be seen to be believed.
Everyone who knows volleyball
in the panhandle knows how good
the Lady Sandies are, and Amarillo
is used to getting every single team’s
best shot whether it be in a regular
season game, district game, round
robin tournament or even a scrimmage.

Lady
Wolves
haven’t quite gotten
their season started this
year, but they have gotten
some practice on the court
during the week last week
and with their first scrimmage on Friday night.
Dalhart took on Amarillo, Palo Duro and Caprock
at Caprock High School
and started off the action
with a scrimmage against
Palo Duro.
The Lady Dons did not
stand a chance in this one.
Though Dalhart didn’t necessarily dominate the Lady
Dons, they made far fewer
mistakes than Palo Duro
and rode that momentum
to a 30-8 victory over the
Lady Dons.
(There was no official
scoring in these games and
all scores will come from
a tally kept by the Texan,
so the scores may not be
absolutely perfect, nor will
they be by games.)

Considering the fact
that the Lady Wolves were
coming off a game in which
they dominated the Lady
Dons earlier in the evening,
this was understandable.
However, the Lady Dons
came out with a lot more
intensity in what was their
final game of the night and
let the Lady Wolves know
they were not going down
without a fight.
They actually led the
game early on at one
point 16-12 over the Lady
Wolves and it took some
good performances from
everyone on the court to
get the lead back and ultimately grab the win for
Dalhart 26-22.

Golden Wolves Football Report 2014
Strap on the Pads
It is finally time for some real football. The
Golden Wolves kicked off practice last
week on Monday morning for the start of
two-a-days, but that practice wasn’t real.
There were no pads on and there was
no hitting, which is probably a good thing
for Dalhart considering how strapped for
depth they are going to be.
No. The real football started on Friday
when the Golden Wolves strapped on the
pads for the first time.
UIL rules prevent teams from strapping
it on too early in the season to prevent
injury and instances like heat stroke that
have been documented in the past years.
But that is all over now, because now
the teams can start laying the lumber on
the football field. It’s the start of something great and that is football season.
The team will practice for a week in
pads before they have their first scrimmage on Friday night.
Football season is here and it is long
overdue.
Texan Photo by Thomas Lott
Noah Martinez will get some carries.
Line Looks Comfortable
Conner Smith carrying the ball and the
offensive line has already been described
earlier.
Where the Golden Wolves are nervous
this year is in the secondary. Now, to be
clear, they are not nervous because they
feel they don’t have talent. In fact, they
have quite a bit of talent in the defensive
backfield.
Where they are nervous is with their
lack of experience in the defensive backfield.
Manuel Guzman, Jesse Lujan and Dom
Martinez all have potential to be good
players at the defensive back spots. However, Guzman was hurt most of the year
last year and didn’t get much of a chance
to play, Martinez was on Junior Varsity
and Lujan has never played safety, and
yet, he is expected to start there this year.
However, between those three guys,
there are some things to be excited about.
Anyone that ever saw Jesse’s brother run
knows just how athletic his family is,
anyone that saw Guzman play receiver
in 7-on-7 understands his ball skills and
Martinez is another athlete that showed
some good things during the summer.
All of them could be good players, but
know one knows how good they can be
until they strap it up and play a real game.
Friday is the first chance to watch these
three guys and we will have to see how
they do.
The Golden Wolves strength this season
is going to be in the trenches. Or at least,
that is what their strength appears to be
on paper.
Dalhart has three returning starters on
their offensive line and two on their defensive line, and everywhere that there
is not a returning starter, there is a player
with varsity experience waiting to step up
and get more snaps.
But if there was one unit that looked
more cohesive than the rest over the last
week it was the offensive line. Though I
was not an offensive lineman, I can tell
you this line knows what to do and where
to go.
They look incredibly fluid in their assignments and are in better shape than
I would be after a long summer in high
school.
Dalton Torres, Tyler Brewer, Justin
Barrera, Waylon Bucher and Anthony
Anzaldua know they have to come ready
to play this year and they look ready to
go and ready to lower the boom on some
defensive linemen and linebackers.
Kicking Game
Yes, the third point I am hitting on is the
kicking game. You heard right, the kicking game. Everyone in Dalhart knows
they have an all-district punter returning
in Conner Smith, but it looks like Dalhart
has several options at kicker this year.
Though no game came down to a onepoint decision last season, there were several instances where Dalhart could have
used a field goal or even an extra point
just to give the team a little extra boost.
It looks like Dalhart will get that extra
boost at times this year. Though the kickers are still getting a feel for the position,
there are three guys that could put the ball
through the uprights with room to spare.
There may not be any field goals made
again this year, but I highly doubt it. The
kicking game has some potential. We will
see if that potential results in production.
First Scrimmage Friday
There will be a full preview for Dalhart’s
Run, Run, Run

Isaiah Perez will be starting at tailback this year for the Golden Wolves.
scrimmage with Stratford on Friday night
in Friday’s paper, but for now, just know
that the Golden Wolves will be heading
to Stratford on Friday night for their first
scrimmage of the season.
The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on the
Elks’ home field.
Last season the Golden Wolves and
the Elks played to a 6-6 tie in their first
scrimmage of the season thanks to a key
fumble forced and recovered by Maurice
Coleman and an interception by Justice
Thelander.
Dalhart did have some trouble moving
the ball against Stratford last season and
we’ll see if the new backfield of Jacob
Harris and Isaiah Perez will be able to get
the Golden Wolves first team offense in
the end zone this year.
The second team scored the Golden
Wolves only touchdown in the scrimmage
last year.
Players to watch on Friday
Dalhart is set at linebacker, offensive line,
and in the backfield this season. They are
solid with Harris and Perez as well as with
Good grief Dalhart is going through some
conditioning. I’m really not going anywhere with this other than telling you that
I do not envy them running after practice.
They may as well just go to cross country practice in the morning and take a
break after their three-hour practices in
the morning. They would get the same
amount of running done and get done a
little bit earlier.
And I really feel sorry for Matt Trujillo
and Fredis Quintanilla because they are
running at cross-country practice and during football practice as well.
If Dalhart isn’t in shape at the start of
the season, I will be stunned.
OK, that story really had no point, but
yeah, they are running a lot at practice.

2014 Property Tax Rates in DALLAM-HARTLEY COUNTIES
HOSPITAL
This notice concerns 2014 property tax rates for DALLAM-HARTLEY COUNTIES HOSPITAL. It presents
information about three tax rates. Last year's tax rate is the actual rate the taxing unit used to determine property
taxes last year. This year's effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare
properties taxed in both years. This year's rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before
taxpayers can start tax rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the total amount of
taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates
are given per $100 of property value.

Statement of Increase/Decrease
If DALLAM- HARTLEY COUNTY HOSPITAL adopts a 2014 tax rate equal to the effective tax rate of 0.178400 per $100 of value, taxes would
increase compared to 2013 taxes by $ 20,612.

Dalhart Texan
Sports News
Caprock
(continued from page B1)
entertaining and somewhat dangerous games.
But there is one team Dalhart plays in volleyball that
is shaping up to be more of a rivalry than many people would think and much of that comes from the close
games they have played in the last few years.
The Lady Wolves and the Caprock Lady Longhorns
seem like two very evenly matched teams on the volleyball court. It really shouldn’t be like that because Dalhart does look to have more talent than the school from
Amarillo, but they have trouble with them every time
they face off whether that be in a tournament or in a
scheduled game.
On Friday night the Lady Wolves took on the Lady
Longhorns on their home court for their second of four
scrimmages. Dalhart jumped out to the early lead on
Caprock, but started to make a lot of mistakes and failed
to execute their offense as well as they would have
liked.
The Lady Wolves only had four kills in the game and
only one ace that came from Peyton Shelton.
Nothing went right for the Lady Wolves on their way
to what amounted to a 26-19 loss (again, unofficial scoring) to the Lady Longhorns.
They lost despite the fact that Caprock had 14 errors
including five service errors.
Since the start of last season, the Lady Wolves defeated the Lady Longhorns in the Randall tournament, but it
took three highly contested games, and then lost on their
home court to Caprock in four games a week later.
Dalhart is quickly learning that the Lady Longhorns
are not going to make it easy for the Lady Wolves to
come away with wins.
“I think Caprock gets up to play us and we’ve given
them some confidence over the last couple of years,”
head coach Kira Satterfield said. “And I think that Caprock has to work very hard for respect and they take it
very personally that a 3A, or now a 4A would beat a 5A
so I think they work really hard.
“I don’t know if it’s a mental block, but I think we
maybe underestimate them more than we do other
teams.”
The Lady Wolves play Caprock in an official game on
August 19 at 6:30 p.m. in Dalhart.
“We talk about we know at PD, they are extremely
athletic and they can sneak up on you and of course Amarillo High or Tascosa carries the reputation of being a
great volleyball school and I just think we kind of forget
that Caprock through the years has had good volleyball,
they just happen to be in an extremely tough district,”
Satterfield said.
Game 2
(continued from page B1)
all had blocks as well.
Dalhart also got some
help from their serving
game as Sybesma, Sibbie
Priestly and Sabrah Howell all had aces in the game.
However, the serving game
did come back to bite them
several times in the game.
Dalhart had five service
errors in the match along
with six hitting errors and
that allowed Palo Duro to
not only stay in the game,
but to threaten the Lady
Wolves with a defeat.
But Dalhart did recover.
They were able to come
back and win the game
which had to give them
confidence that they can
do it without Sherrill on
the court at all times.
The senior missed a few
games last year while dealing with a shoulder injury
and the Lady Wolves have
to be prepared for surprises
like that this season.
“I think that we let her
carry a big offensive load
last year and I want to
build the confidence in
ourselves that we can do
it without Maddi and that
when Maddi is out there
with us it’s more than icing
on the cake, it’s icing and
whipped topping with the
cherry on top when she’s
out there,” head coach Kira
Satterfield said. “But to
know that we can do things
without her, so it’s going to
be important that we’re going to be able to rest her at
times because we wore her
out last year.”

Challenge
(continued from page B1)
Dalhart gave Amarillo their best shot
on Friday night when they took on
the Lady Sandies in their third scrimmage of the night.
Now, even though Amarillo did
lose their setter from a year ago
as well as one of their best middle
blockers, they are just as formidable
of an opponent this year. They simply reloaded from their junior varsity
and return talent everywhere.
But for the first 10 or so points of
the game, the Lady Wolves were far
from overmatched. Madison Sherrill and Katelyn Sybesma showed
they could hang with the best in the
state for the first few minutes of the
game.
PD
(continued from page B1)
and serve-receive was very
good in their first scrimmage of the night. Dalhart
finished with seven aces in
the game with four of them
coming from senior Courtney White.
White did not serve in
2013 due to the fact she
was coming off of a shoulder injury prior to the season, and she clearly looked
hyped up throughout the
night to put up a few serves
in the game.
“I just think she’s extremely happy to be able
to serve this year because
the year before last she had
really started becoming
Each attacker had three kills in the
game in the early going and forced
the Lady Sandies to account for them
wherever they were on the court.
Macie Shelton did a good job of
setting up the offense with five assists in the early going as well.
Dalhart kept with Amarillo early
on as they led early and trailed just
11-7 about halfway through the
game. That is where it went downhill for Dalhart. Amarillo turned on
the afterburners and closed out the
scrimmage on a 21-5 run.
But to be clear, Amarillo is now a
6A team while Dalhart is now a 4A.
Amarillo has talent, and more importantly when they are taking on a
smaller school, they have depth.
They have a lot of depth. There are
no breaks for teams when the Lady
Sandies outside hitters and middle
blockers go to the bench. They simply run out someone that may not
be just as good, but may be as good
in the future as the starters Amarillo runs out at the beginning of the
games. But the Lady Wolves played
well, there is no other way to say it.
Even though they did ultimately lose
the game, they left feeling confident
in themselves and with a clear picture of what they have to work on
before they face Amarillo again on
August 26.
“I think we still have some work to
do on communication,” head coach
Kira Satterfield said. “Our intensity
at times lacked a little so I think we
need to work on that, and just getting
used to having a different setter and
different hitters up there, so we definitely have room to improve on our
offensive play.”
one of our best servers and
then last year just because
of that shoulder surgery
it just really wasn’t smart
and feasible to have her
serve,” head coach Kira
Satterfield. “But I thought
overall, with the exception
of a few serves I thought
we did a good job of serving.”
Dalhart lost three servers from their starting
line-up from a year ago in
Robynn Elan-Puttick, Britt
Wilson and Bailey Clements, so they are going
to need servers to step up
and take advantage of their
opponents and try to catch
them napping.

And at the same time kills in the game while
in this game, the Lady Katelyn Sybesma, Macie

forcing Palo Duro into 17 added a kill. Sybesma had
errors including 13 hitting the one block in the game
errors. The Lady Wolves for the Lady Wolves.
