WHAT ABouT GoD?
“All real living is meeting.” So wrote the great
Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. As the holidays approach, much of our intent in coming
to the synagogue is not only about God, but
about other human beings. A synagogue is
called in Hebrew a Beit K’nesset, a house of
gathering. We come together to be with one
another.
What about god?
Throughout the year, as we engage
our theme, “What About God?”, this
space will be utilized to introduce a
theme-related quote or teaching.
Take a few moments, either alone or
with family and friends, to read the
selection. Utilize the questions to
spark a discussion, or pose a question
of your own. Consider introducing the
teaching at your Shabbat table!
Happy Studying!!
B’shalom,
Rabbi Schuldenfrei
Still, no one needs a synagogue to be with
other people. We need a synagogue to be
with other people in a sacred community. God
is not so easily left out of the equation.
According to our tradition, God is like light. I
cannot see light, but I can see things because
there is light. I cannot see God, but God is the
reason I can see you. As Buber puts it, every
true encounter between human beings is a
threefold encounter – I, Thou and God. God
stands behind our world.
Throughout this year we look to deepen our
understanding of God in the world. For thousands of years Jews have prayed to God, written about God, spoken to God, listened to God.
They have very different conceptions of what
God is. Some say that one cannot form any idea
of God – God is far above our ability to conceptualize. Others speak of God as a being, a force;
the kabbalah speaks of God one way, philosophy another, midrash a third. How do we think
of God? More, how do we feel about God?
Rabbi David Wolpe
So as we gather for this high holiday season we
turn anew to the oldest questions that investigate what is there above and beyond human
life. Does God watch over us as we live – and
does God care for us after we die? Join us all
year long in searching for responses: What
about God?

As I write this column,
Sinai Temple is one
step closer to getting
our Application for a
Conditional Use Permit
(CUP) approved by the
City of Los Angeles.
The P.L.U.M. Committee
unanimously approved
our application and it is
now scheduled for an
Ira M. Friedman
August 11, 2009 vote of
the whole Los Angeles
City Council. If the Los Angeles City Council approves
our application, we will be able to move ahead with our
properties and make use of them.
We have worked with all of the local homeowners
associations who all approved a memorandum of
understanding. We are continuing to work with our
residential neighbors and the Los Angeles City
Department of Transportation on traffic mitigation
issues. Sinai wants to remain a good neighbor to all of
the neighbors living near us.
A A new sound system for the sanctuary so no matter
where you sit you will hear clear crisp sound with the
new state of the art system.
A Update of our computer system. Over the years, our
computer system has grown and grown and serves
many more needs than when we started. We need a system to keep up with these needs. When completed, our
computer system will serve all of the Temple’s and Sinai
Akiba’s needs.
A Deferred Maintenance. We will now be able to take
care of many things we had put off.
These projects are a part of the generous gift from Max
Webb.
Kol nidre appeal
The Temple’s operations depend not just on your dues
but your generous contributions made during Kol Nidre.
While the past few years have been financially challenging for many of our members (and we fully
understand), we are hopeful that when you receive
information and are able to, that you will make your
pledge early. The Kol Nidre Appeal is such an important
part of our fund raising, we have set up a special committee just for this purpose.

Dear Sinai Family:
High Holidays will soon be here.
As we rejoice,
remember and reflect, we should also remember that
it is within the walls of our synagogue that our Jewish
history, beliefs and practices are celebrated and our
traditions honored. Our synagogue is a place where
small miracles happen daily. It is here at Sinai that we
celebrate baby namings, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, holidays and special occasions. It is at Sinai that
we say prayers for the sick and kaddish for those who
have passed away. It is here that we offer support to
those less fortunate and bolster those in need. Within
these walls, we have the opportunity to learn and
grow as we daven together. It is at Sinai that our children learn about their heritage, tradition and most
importantly, develop a love of Torah. All of these small
miracles occur within our walls.
Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first president acknowledged, "Miracles sometimes occur but one has to
work terribly hard for them." And so, it is true for us.
It takes a combination of critical funds and hard work
to make our miracles happen. Our inspirational rabbis
and cantors, our staff of educators, our professional
staff, custodial crew and lay volunteers all work
thousands of hours to help make each of these
small miracles a reality. As you know, our dues
alone are not sufficient to cover the expenses of the
synagogue. In a few short weeks you will be receiving
a letter asking you to make a contribution to our
Annual Kol Nidre Campaign. Please give generously
and help us continue to create small miracles every
single day.
For more information please contact me or our
Development Director Jackie Ahdout at (310) 474-1518.
S'hanah Tovah!

Dear Friends,
“Reconnect, Reflect and Rejoice: Strengthening our Inner
Selves” is the theme for the third annual Sisterhood
Retreat, October 23-25 at Camp Ramah in Ojai, California.
We are thrilled that our spiritual leaders, Rabbi Nicole
Guzik, Cantor Ari Brown and Scholar-in-Residence Jody
Myers will join us for this weekend. After the huge success
of last year’s Retreat, you will not want to miss the opportunity to grow, laugh, learn and enjoy the company of
women of all ages as we build our Sisterhood community.
We encourage you to join Sinai Sisterhood and thus support
our synagogue, community and Israel. Look in your mail for
our Membership renewals and applications. Call Rachelle
Marcus (310) 550-5884 for membership information.
Remember, all paid-up Sisterhood members will be guests
at our annual Sisterhood Luncheon on October 13th.
The theme for this year’s campaign for Torah Fund is
Le'avdah ul-shamrah -- To Plant and Preserve. The Torah
Fund Campaign is one of the most important programs in
Sisterhood and raises money to help support future rabbis,
cantors and educators attending the Ziegler School of
Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, The Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York and the Schechter Institute of Jewish
Studies in Jerusalem. Your support insures the solid and
healthy future of Conservative/Masorti Judaism. In appreciation of their generous support, donors of $180 or more will
receive this year’s 5770 beautiful Torah Fund pin in the
shape of a gold and silver leaf at Shabbat services on
September 12th.
Sisterhood is selling orange and organic Honey for Rosh
Hashanah. Look for our tables in the Temple in September.
For more information, contact Michele Grant, (310) 5861166, [email protected] or Lorraine Joffe (310) 890-4802,

On behalf of the members of Sisterhood, we would like to
wish everyone Shana Tovah and a happy, healthy and sweet
New Year.
Be kind and merciful.
Let no one ever come to you without coming
away better and happier. Mother Teresa.

Sinai Temple to Honor
Jina & Dr. ata reZvanPoUr
On December 6, 2009, at the 14th Annual Los Angeles Celebration
on behalf of the Foundation for Masorti Judaism in Israel, Sinai Temple will honor a most deserving couple, Jina & Ata Rezvanpour.
In communities spread across Israel, the Masorti Movement, by modeling a non-coercive, pluralistic
Judaism, has opened a Jewish door to thousands of Israelis who felt alienated from their tradition.
Masorti brings a spiritual path to native Israelis and immigrants through a tolerant and authentic
approach to Judaism. Throughout the land, 50 kehillot communities, the Noam Youth Group, RamahNoam Summer Camp, B’nai Mitzvah for Children with Special Needs, Women’s Study Groups, the
Wedding Initiative and Social Outreach Programs have been highly successful.
In short, Masorti is positively impacting the character of Jewish life in Israel.
The 14th Annual Los Angeles Masorti Celebration will take place on December 6, 2009, at Sinai Temple.
To lend your support on the Sinai Temple Committee, contact Chairs: Faranak Halimi, 310-278-7070;
Rachelle Marcus, 310-276-2644; Susan Weisbarth, 323-930-2799.
A percentage of the proceeds from this year’s event will be returned to the six participating synagogues for
the specific purpose of helping to fund youth scholarships for Israel programs.

a PerSonal invitation
Dear Sinai Temple Member,
As the Jewish New Year begins, our traditions call on us to
pay homage to those we have lost, and to gain strength
through communal consolation. As a sign of continuity
between generations, we visit the graves of loved ones and
participate in Kever Avot community memorial services. This
marks the 54th year during which Mount Sinai has helped the
Jewish community enrich this observance with an inspirational
service culminating in the recitation of the Kaddish.
On behalf of our staff and the Cemetery Management Committee of Sinai
Temple, I extend this personal invitation to you to join with us, and with hundreds
of others, at our annual Kever Avot Community Memorial Services on Sunday,
September 27th at 10:00 A.M. Services will be held simultaneously at both our
Simi Valley and Hollywood Hills Memorial Parks.
This year will mark the dedication of a significant addition to our community’s
library, the new Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries’ “Memorial
Prayers” Minyan Book, copies of which will be given to all the families we serve.
Kever Avot at Simi Valley will host noted Rabbi Elliot Dorff delivering the
Memorial Address, with Sinai Temple’s own Cantor Arianne Brown providing
musical interpretation of prayer to accompany our thoughts and remembrances.
The Hollywood Hills service will feature Sinai Temple’s Rabbi Brian Schuldenfrei and
Cantor Joseph Gole and Organist and Choir Director Aryell Cohen, who will provide
musical accompaniment as well as leading the Sinai Temple Choir. In the spirit
of the High Holy Days, we will be collecting non-perishable food and accepting
other donations for SOVA, a Jewish food pantry for the hungry and homeless.
I look forward to you joining us, as together, we remember.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People
There are a lot of things in the world that can frighten
us, but the more we let them frighten us, the less capable we become at dealing with them. Fear impairs our
judgment and hinders our ability to act. From a religious perspective, fear shrinks our souls and diminishes our humanity, leaving us less charitable, more selfcentered and less creative than we might otherwise
be. That may be why the words most often spoken by
God in the Bible are "don't be afraid." In his latest
book, Rabbi Harold Kushner identifies the things we
have reason to fear -- from terrorism and earthquakes
to growing old and confronting our mortality -- and
helps us find the resources within us and around us to
cope with those fears.

The Feit Family Shabbat Live
W hat iS t he c hai S ocietY ?
The Chai Society has been Sinai Temple's official Shabbat Greeter for ten years.
All Chai Society members happily volunteer with a smiling "Shabbat Shalom" to
welcome congregants and guests as they arrive at Sinai Temple.
(We currently have 70 members, each greeting about twice a year.)
We Chai Society Seniors (55 years & over) enjoy a monthly meeting on the Tuesday evening
prior to the last Shabbat of each month.
Our meetings often feature speakers on timely events. As well, there are reports on interesting travels or experiences by the Chai Society members.
We are a young-minded busy group of Sinai Seniors who enjoy being together. Some of our
past activities have been tours of the Presidential libraries, local museums, the Herzog winery
(with lunch), theater parties, dinners, Hanukkah parties, concerts and local cultural events.
You may recall our memorable public open evening events at Sinai Temple featuring "Peter
Greenberg, The Travel Detective" and Randol Schoenberg recounting the Recovery of the
Klimpt paintings from Austria.
So, welcome to Sinai Temple members 55 and above, we want to meet you and invite you to
join The Chai Society.
