This process is carried out at least eighteen months in advance and it is then expected that all ISASA schools in the Central Region (Gauteng and Free State) will have a common calendar. However, our experience of the last few years around the Easter weekend has not been totally to our satisfaction and this will be even more of an issue in the calendar published for 2016. In that calendar, Monday 21 March is Human Rights Day and Good Friday is at the end of that same week; the following week opens with Family Day on the Easter Monday. We believe that a great many of our parents will see that particular week as a time in which a 10-day family holiday can be achieved with just three days of leave being taken from work or business. Redhill School has thus decided to make a change to the calendar that was presented to us by ISASA. We will NOT hold school in that week prior to Easter at all. In order to catch up the days missed we will start Term 1 th rd th 2016 on Tuesday 12 January; Term 2 on Tuesday 3 May and Term 3 Monday 5 September. Closing time for Half Terms will be at the end of the normal school day. Please click on http://www.redhill.co.za/images/latest_news_pdf/2015/RedhillSchool_2016Calendar.pdf to view the 2016 Calendar. Yours sincerely Redhill Executive Adobe Photoshop Awards: rd We congratulate Bella Leslie-Miller in Grade 11 on being placed 3 in S.A.’s Adobe Certified Associate Championships on Friday 26 June 2015. 15 South African students from various tertiary colleges and schools entered the competition this year. Bella recently wrote an Adobe Photoshop online theory examination to prove her proficiency in the application. This qualified her to be part of an elite international community of ‘creatives’ who has expertise in digital communication using Photoshop. Bella’s idea was to create something both visually striking and simple that captured the underlying motivation for the poster - a campaign for Africa month. Having been given a tidal wave of images to work with, she settled on a simple black and white photograph of a boy into which she edited coloured eyes and numbers within the overall format of an A3 poster. This year, two Redhill students were privileged to be part of the program. Most teenagers have continuously heard the saying "the youth are the leaders of tomorrow" drilled into their brains. They could probably even spew it back out verbatim by now. Societal ideals have indoctrinated us into believing that we will lead in the future. We are hardly told that we can lead in the present. From the first day at GIBS, our one-sided views were challenged. We were told that the youth are the leaders of 'now' and therefore, we should start playing our part in building the community. The meetings at GIBS not only equipped us with knowledge of the problems that face South Africa today, but also challenged our thinking by encouraging us to find possible solutions to these problems. From historical trips to the Workers’ Museum to educational workshops on Xenophobia, GIBS inspired us to "be the change that [we] wish to see in the world..." Furthermore, GIBS has made us experience what it feels like to be discriminated against. Whether we were not given lunch for an arbitrary reason, or made to walk with a cap saying "I'm stupid" for the day (without our knowledge) we were given the opportunity to feel what it is like to be victims of stereotyping. It is human nature to have the ideology that "what does not affect us, does not concern us". GIBS changed our views on life and encouraged us to stand up for what is right. We were forced to be victims of discrimination and through this; we have learnt to prevent discrimination within our capabilities. The past few months at GIBS has motivated us immensely. It has broadened our horizons. We wish to continue being leaders of the ‘now’, to lead by encouraging others to become leaders; to lead by example. Aziza Ganchi & Danyaal Davids Israel Tour – April 2016 Redhill is taking a Cultural Tour to Israel in April 2016. Students in Grades 10, 11 or 12 in 2016 are eligible. This tour promises to be just as exciting as our previous Israel tour in 2012. It includes visits to holy sites of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It will also be full of fun activities like swimming in the Dead Sea, exploring tunnels and white water rafting in the Jordan River. (Possessions left on the school grounds the previous day, would have been collected in the late afternoon by the Redhill grounds staff and placed in the storage bins in this room.) For the month of July (only) the storeroom will also be open on Wednesdays from 13h30 to 14h00 and, if this is well supported, we may make this a regular opening time in addition to the hour each morning. High School students are reminded to collect their possessions during these times when the storeroom is open each day. This storeroom is where all items (except valuables) found around the school are taken. MCC and Outspan lost property is also delivered to the storeroom on a regular basis. All items of value (spectacles, watches, cell phones, wallets, keys etc.) are sent to Reception for safe keeping. Marked items (where we can identify an owner) are stored until they are claimed. Unusual unmarked personal items, bags, sports equipment, shoes & lunch boxes are kept for a few weeks and then donated to charity. All unmarked school uniform is sent straight to the Second-Hand Shop as we do not have the space to store the vast quantities received. KINDLY ENSURE THAT ALL POSSESSIONS; INCLUDING UNIFORM, BAGS, SPORTS EQUIPMENT, LUNCH BOXES & WATER BOTTLES ARE CLEARLY MARKED. Marketing on the Move: Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge If you are interested in participating in this much anticipated annual event, but have not yet signed up for any particular cause then why not ride for one of our ISASA schools; Unity College. Unity College is a special needs school that is organising to ride the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge to raise much needed funds towards their new school’s SWIMMING | THERAPY POOL. It will be a fun day out for the whole family and ‘Unity Pedal For Disabilities’ would appreciate your support. There are 3 ways you could help; either by riding the ‘Pedal For Disabilities Challenge’ and finding sponsorship for yourself (Pledge Form) or by taking the Pledge form and raising funds for Unity College in your private capacity or by being a sponsor. The event takes place Sunday the 15th of November 2015. For details email [email protected]. Forest Farm Centre: Forest Farm Centre is a residential facility for adults with cerebral palsy in Bryanston. Cerebral palsy is a condition that is usually sustained at birth or within the first 4 years of life. It develops due to a shortage of oxygen to the brain and leads to brain damage which in turn leads to multiple disabilities including speech impairments, challenges with mobility and intellectual (cognitive) disabilities. At Forest Farm Centre, we look after and care for 109 residents. We hereby invite members of the community to come and interact with our residents. We would appreciate volunteers to facilitate any of the following activities – yoga, meditation, art, music, and other social activities.
