Crossroads Community Association Mission Statement...
“Crossroads Community Association provides
programs and services to enhance the quality of life for all.”
President’s Message
We just held our last general meeting until our AGM in
September. Thank you to our Executive, Directors and
volunteers for a wonderful year. We have had many challenges
and have come through them more knowledgeable and with a
great respect for one another. I look forward to growing with you
all in the fall and beyond. Thank You.
May 28th was our 7th Annual Multicultural Festival. It was
by Larry Leach
a success thanks to our wonderful committee: Shannon, Jessie,
Brijbala and Tracy. Thanks also to our funders, the Vista Heights Action Committee,
The City Councillors office (Councillor Chabot) and The Calgary Foundation. It was
nice to see the Calgary Tower lit in honour of our community that evening.
I attended the Police Commission Dinner on behalf of the Community Association and
learned much about community policing. I enjoyed speaking with a young police cadet who
looks forward to a future in policing. Well done MacKenzie.
Our Community Garage Sale took place June 11th. Thanks to John, Wendy and
Jeremy (who sponsored the event). It came with ZERO cost to the association other
than space we provided for advertising. I hope we can make this an annual event as the
participation was outstanding. We had 28 locations and well over 30 families participate.

Community Board Meetings
Community meetings are held at the Crossroads Hall on the first
Sunday of the month except for holidays and summer months. The
meetings start at 7pm. We do not have meetings in July and August.
Next meeting is the Annual General Meeting on September 11.
With a little help from our friends!
Sometimes mistakes happen and last month we cancelled our Vista
Heights Community Cleanup too late to make changes in the newsletter. We simply did not have anyone to co-ordinate the event. As a
result, some people were ready to bring their items to the Crossroads
Furniture Mart.
We put up signs and had 3 volunteers at the Furniture mart parking lot to send folks to the closest alternative. Thanks to Duncan and
Michele MacDonald for their help. We had 10 folks over the day we
were able to direct over to Rundle.
Everyone was respectful including the fine folks at Crossroads
Furniture Mart. The good folks at the Ward 5 office had city trucks
monitoring the lot through the day to make sure no dumping took
place. We are beyond thankful for everyone for making the best of an
unfortunate situation.
Speaking of friends, thanks to everyone who submitted their re-
ceipts for Village beer to Crossroads. These funds will help us deliver
many great events and programs next year. Thanks to Sunridge Park
Wines and Spirits, who were our closest store to carry Village products. They were very helpful.

Cornerstone Youth Centre had a large attendance at their open
house June 7th. They have made it a better place for our junior high
aged youth. I encourage you all to take a tour and see what they are
doing there. It is a jewel in our community.
We continue to be the busiest community in east Calgary this
summer thanks to our entertainment committee of Brijbala, Marilyn
and Inga. July 10th will be our Stampede Breakfast; August 20th
will be our first family magic show in many years; and August 27
will be our Annual Summer Festival in Vista Heights (south end
of school field near the playground.) Read further for more details
on these and other events.
Wednesday September 7th will be our mass registration for
all community groups. If you’d like to sign up for dance, scouting,
soccer, guides, this is a great night to get your activities started. Or,
buy yourself a membership – it has its privileges.
I hope you all have a Happy Canada Day, a great Stampede and an
even better summer. Enjoy all the activities that we have on offer.
Be kind to each other Crossroads. Be a good neighbour, keep in
touch on our social media platforms and come out and meet your

Going on a Holiday?
Summer is a great time to enjoy a vacation! But before you do,
make sure your home is as safe and secure as possible. The keys to
protecting your home when you are on vacation are not just the ones
you use in your deadbolt lock.
Below are a few tips to help reduce your risk:
• Double-check your insurance policy to find out if and when you
require someone to check in on your home.
• Give a trusted neighbour or friend a key and trip details and ask
them to check in on your home.
• Don’t advertise that you are going away.
• Create a lived-in appearance. Be sure the lawn is cared for while
you are away, and stop any newspapers or have flyers collected from
your door or yard. Set lights and a TV’s on timers so your home is not
dark during evening hours.
• Encourage a trusted neighbour to park their car in your driveway
while you are gone.
• Ensure that your door and window locking devices are working
and are locked when you leave.
• Disable your garage door while you are gone. Most have a switch
that can be turned off. You can also put a padlock or similar device
through the door tracks to ensure it cannot be opened.
• Put away, or secure all lawn furniture or tools (i.e. ladders) so
they can’t be used to assist a burglar in gaining access to the upper
story windows of your home.

Crossroads Multicultural Festival
The last Saturday in May has become a “can’t miss”
weekend for our community. Our 7th Annual Multicultural Festival drew record crowds and smiles. Over 350
people attended the event this year.
Crowds were entertained by Confederation Park Scottish Country Dance Club who opened the festival.
We had square dancers entertaining outdoors on the
Atco stage and they brought participants up from the
crowd to learn the finer points. The Calgary Italian Dancers blew everyone away with their energetic performance.
Our famous international buffet drew rave reviews
again as the crowds lined up for a taste of some of the
finest food the world has to offer. Jessie Mafrica and her
wonderful crew (many of them family) outdid themselves
again this year. A friend of mine attends 20 plus cultural
festivals and he claims this one was BY FAR the best buffet he had ever seen. While we ate, we watched the Punjabi Dancers followed by Urvashi Kalajendera. Both
groups drew massive applause.
Outdoors we had our annual Hapkido demonstration thanks to Yoon’s Martial Arts School. The energy
and athleticism of these young folk, breaking boards and
performing high risk moves, continues to be a crowd favourite. The Mridul dance troop and the Canadian Step
Dancing group took us into the afternoon with wonderful
performances. The day ended with Bijan Maysami and
his new group performing Middle Eastern classics with
ancient instruments, one of which was over 10,000 years
old. It was a remarkable performance to end the day.
Enormous thanks to our funders: City Councillors
fund (Councillor Chabot), The Calgary Foundation
and the Vista Heights Action Committee. We couldn’t
have done it without you. Our wonderful committee included Shannon Keetch, Jessie Mafrica, Brijbala Bakshi
and Tracy Tanner. A dream team to be sure. Thank You
for your contribution to the pride of our community.

A Lo Ba
with Jerry Rourke
Welcome back to Part 25 of our historic feature in the
Crossroads Convenor. Every month we will feature an
excerpt from our Journey Through the Crossroads
history book. This month we are reprinting Part 10 of our feature from September
2007 - Katie Jaworenko’s farm at 2222 Vermillion Street NE. The family had lived
there since the early 1920’s and the house was torn down in 2005. This month we
look at what is currently at the site.
I have heard current and former residents would like to submit their stories
and I welcome all new submissions. Does anybody remember the old mink farms
at the end of 14th Avenue? How about the old

KATIE JAWORENKO-PART 2
Back in September of 2002,
while talking to Katie in her home,
I had no idea that this talk would
be the start of the history book
many residents now have in their
possession.
When Katie passed away in
2003, the future of her house
and history of Vista Heights was
uncertain. While I was writing
the book, her property was sold
and the garage was moved. I checked into moving the house to a
location where it could be maintained as a historic remembrance of
the pioneers that built the community but it became apparent the
house was too old to move and it was torn down by developers in
2005 to make way for a condominium.
The site remained vacant when the developer backed out of the
project, the city then took over the land and in 2007 a new building
emerged.
It is now the site of the Vista Grande. The once simple life of the
1920’s has now been replaced by a modern 21st century housing unit.
No more barns, tractors, sloughs and cattle. Even the huge pine trees
that graced the property are long gone, this being the last farmhouse
in Vista Heights. In Belfast, though, there are at least four or five farm
houses left in the community.
If anyone has any new stories to tell, please send them in and they
will get printed here in my feature and may be added to the new
book! Join me next year for another installment of “A Look Back”,
our ‘Journey Through the Crossroads’ feature. - Jerry R.

Stampede Taxi Stands
Stampede taxi stands are designated areas near Stampede Park
where taxis will be lined-up to wait for customers. Two temporary
taxi stands will operate at all hours during Stampede. These stands
are located at the South and North entrances of Stampede Park. The
taxi stand located at the North entrance of Stampede Park will provide priority service to people with accessibility needs as this entrance
provides the most direct route to enter into the park.
Late Night Temporary Taxi Stands
Within Stampede Park there are multiple entertainment venues.
In 2016 all venues are closing at 3 a.m. To accommodate the evening
rush two additional late night temporary stands will be established.
For details, visit Calgary.ca and search taxi stands.

Green Cart
Green Cart set to roll out next spring
After a successful pilot that saw a 40 per cent drop in garbage and
89 per cent satisfaction amongst residents, the Green Cart Program
will roll out to all single family homes beginning next spring. All
communities should have the service by fall 2017.
Here are the highlights:
- All food, yard and pet waste is accepted in the program.
- Unlimited quantity. Use paper yard waste bags for extra yard
waste that doesn’t fit in the cart.
- Green and blue carts will be collected on the same day every
week.
- Black carts will be picked up once every two weeks on a separate
day since most household waste can be recycled or composted.
Residents will receive everything they need to get started including the green cart, a kitchen pail for collecting food scraps inside the
home; a sample of compostable bags for the kitchen pail and yard
waste bags.
Once service begins, households will pay $6.50 per month. This
charge reflects the savings achieved by changing black cart garbage
collection from weekly to once every two weeks.
Green carts go beyond backyard composting
If you’re already backyard composting, keep it up. Use your green
cart for all the other materials that cannot be composted at home like
meat, bones, shellfish, dairy, weeds and pet waste.
Why we need to keep food and yard waste out of landfills
It may be hard to believe, but more than half of residential garbage is food and yard waste. Composting this material is the right
thing to do. When food and yard waste is buried in the landfill it
releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide. By using the green carts we reduce dependence on our
landfills, reduce greenhouse gas and turn food and yard waste into
nutrient-rich compost.

The New Adventures of Engine 23
Central Library is home to a full-sized, real fire truck—and yes,
it’s inside the library! Engine 23 has retired from fighting fires and
has begun a whole new life helping children learn. Calgary’s youngest
citizens can not only read about fire trucks, but also suit up, jump in
the truck, and rush to the scene of imaginary accidents and infernos
to bring aid and assistance. Because the fire truck isn’t just a 22-tonne
vehicle in a building: it’s a suite of experiences. It’s authentic. Kids can
play on it and interact with it in a very real way.
Visit Engine 23 any time Central Library is open, or drop in for
special Engine 23 storytimes. Toddlers and Preschoolers (ages 2-5)
can drop in to enjoy fire-themed storytimes while seated atop Engine
23! Families (all ages) are welcome to drop in and join a Calgary Fire
Department firefighter for a special family storytime and the opportunity to start their very own new adventures with Engine 23.
