2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
The 2009 season could be a turning point for Peter Lawrence and the
Hartford lacrosse team. Lawrence has assembled the strongest and
most athletic roster in his four seasons with the Hawks, and the hope
is that an experienced defense and a young attack can lead Hartford
back to the America East Championship.
ATTACK
Hartford’s revamped attack will be led by junior captain Justin Bearse,
the team’s leading scorer last year with 15 goals and five assists for
20 points. After improving his strength and quickness in the offseason, Bearse will be the engine that makes the offense run.
Rounding out the starting line are freshmen Carter Bender and
Aidan Genik. Bender, a great box player who had a successful prep
season at Brewster Academy, has the ability to challenge for rookie of
the year honors in the conference. Genik has great hands and is crafty
around the cage, one of the top finishers on the team.
Freshman Ryan Compitello, another solid shooter, will compete
for playing time in the starting lineup. The Hawks could end up using
a four-man rotation at attack, with Compitello splitting time with his
fellow classmates to keep the unit fresh.
Lawrence’s second group will be bolstered by sophomore Sean
King and freshman Mike Pelzar. King has shown great promise after
converting to attack from the midfield, where he saw action in three
games last year. Pelzar, while still developing his game, should improve as the season progresses.
MIDFIELD
Lawrence has put together a group of midfielders who can play at both
ends of field and has the ability to create offense through transition.
Returners Jacob Eustice, Leif Abrahamson, Vinny Pellizzi, Michael
Cudmore, Dan Clough and Rob Steffens figure to be leaders at the
position.
Eustice, a bull of a player who can shoot on the run, will draw the
attention of most opponents’ LSM. He tied for second on the team in
scoring last season with 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points.
Pellizzi and Abrahamson both had great fall seasons and will look
to carry that success over into the spring. Each is strong at both ends
of the field. Pellizzi scored five goals last year and is Hartford’s best
athlete in the midfield. Abrahamson, who netted four goals in 2008, is
a workhorse between the lines.
Lawrence has a pair of shifty, offensive-minded midfielders in
Clough and Steffens. Cudmore, a tough and hard-nosed player, is a
ground ball machine who will work on finding the back of the net more
this year. He finished with five goals and 13 assists last season.
Martin Bowes is another great athlete who could be a nice surprise as he develops. Devin O’Brien is one of the hardest workers on
the team and has come a long way since his rookie season. Clark De
Geer is a crafty Canadian who will play a lot on the wing and on faceoffs, and Austin Rogers has a chance to be one of the top newcomers
on the squad.
At the d-mid spots, the Hawks will look to returners Tim Fallon,
Nick Frigenti, David Spivey and Brendan Marlow to carry the load.
Fallon, a sophomore, could be the best face-off guy in the conference. Frigenti is another workhorse who has consistently proven to be
Hartford’s best cover guy. Spivey, a senior, is a veteran presence while
Marlow, who could be the fastest on the team, is a tough and physical
defender in midfield. The same goes for newcomer Kevin Whelan, who
could see playing time at d-mid.
The one area where the Hawks have no experience is at longstick. Sophomore Rob Nosworthy will look to fill the void by converting
to LSM from attack, where he finished with four goals and an assist
last season. An athletic player who has a great stick, Nosworthy proved
to be dangerous in transition during the fall.
Junior Rory Finneran is another player who will make the switch
to LSM this season. Freshman Ben Knapton, a smart player with a lot
of range, will compete for the starting job. Classmate Will Ricciardi and
sophomore Dan Gillespie will also compete for time. Ricciardi has a
good stick and has displayed great potential while Gillespie offers a
different, more physical style at the position.
DEFENSE
Hartford’s strongest area may be its defense, where Lawrence returns
his entire starting lineup and a deep rotation of subs. The Hawks will
need consistent play from the defense to stay in games, and the experienced group is more than capable of delivering.
Senior captain Mark Liberti is the emotional leader of the defense. A three-year starter in the backfield, he is a physical player who
will cover an opponent’s top scoring threat. Joining him on the starting
unit are senior Eric Guevara and sophomore Conor Flynn. Guevara is
another top cover guy, and the fact that he’s left-handed gives Lawrence the luxury of using him against some of the top right-handed
shooters in the conference. Flynn is the most physical of the group and
the best at scooping up ground balls and clearing the ball.
Senior Peter Barone, probably the hardest worker on the team
and an animal in the weight room, leads the second unit. Junior Sean
Hennessy–a two-time winner of the team’s “blood and guts” award–is
a tough player with big-game experience. Freshman Steven Groccia,
the top newcomer on defense and the future of the program, rounds
out the group. Classmates Scott Kessler and Rob Chana will also see
playing time off the bench.
GOAL
Depth at goal will be another of Hartford’s strengths. Senior captain
Jon McMahon, sophomore Lee Malandrino and freshman Scott Bement will all get a chance in the cage during non-conference play.
McMahon, a three-year starter, returns for his final season with
the Hawks. Last season he started all but one game and posted the
best goals-against average and save percentage of his career. During
the fall he improved on his outlets and took control of the defense,
exuding the type of leadership that is critical from a goalie.
Malandrino and Bement will push for the starting role. Malandrino played in only two games last year but showed flashes of brilliance
during the fall. Bement joins the Hawks after a stellar high school career. He could be the best athlete on team but will need to gain experience.

LAWRENCE
Peter Lawrence enters his fourth year as head coach of the University of Hartford lacrosse team in 2009. There has been a tremendous
youth movement at Hartford over the last two years, and Lawrence has
been able to recruit some of the best young lacrosse players from the
Northeast and Canada.
Lawrence’s crowning achievement to this point has been a historic win over 19th-ranked Stony Brook University in 2007. The Hawks
pulled off the 6-4 upset over the Seawolves on Al-Marzook Field. Lawrence, formerly the head lacrosse coach at Division III Elmira College,
is the seventh head coach in the program’s Division I history. In his
first season he led the Hawks to more wins than the previous two years
combined.
Lawrence began his coaching career as an assistant at Whittier
College, where he directed the Poets’ defense in their first two seasons
of NCAA competition. Whittier, during and after his tenure, was able to
become a Top DIII program. He spent one season as an assistant for
the club team at the University of New Hampshire, guiding the Wildcats to a Pioneer League Championship and a berth in the national
tournament. Lawrence then spent three seasons as head coach at
Elmira, where he led the Soaring Eagles to an overall record of 8-6 in
2005, only the fifth winning season in school history. Lawrence has
had the privilege to coach many Canadians over his career, including
seven who have gone on to play in the NLL.
Lawrence is the owner of Trashcan Lacrosse, a company specializing in lacrosse camps, clinics and travel teams. In addition to Trashcan Lacrosse, Lawrence directs Powell Brothers Lacrosse Camps and
GameBreaker Lacrosse camps. He travels extensively over the summer while running camps in Atlanta, Oregon, California, New Jersey
and Connecticut. He also conducted live field demonstrations at the
2006 & 2007 US Lacrosse National Conventions.
A standout player at Roanoke College and recently elected to its
2008 Hall of Fame class, Lawrence led the Maroons to three straight
NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. He was a three time allconference selection and a two time All-American selection, and in
1998 he was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the
Year. He also played in the North-South All-Star Game that same year.
After graduating from Roanoke College in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, Lawrence was drafted by the
MLL’s Bridgeport Barrage in the league’s inaugural season (2001).
Lawrence currently resides in West Hartford with his wife Meghan
and their children, Finn and Rowan.
BASTI
Jonathan Basti joined the Hartford coaching staff in the summer of
2008 and will serve as top assistant under head coach Peter Lawrence.
Basti spent last season as the top assistant at Lafayette College
and the previous three years as an assistant at Fairfield University.
“Jon brings a great deal of passion, experience, strong recruiting
ties, and a desire to restore the tradition at Hartford,” said Lawrence
at the time of the hiring. “I very much look forward to working with Jon
and anticipate him making a huge impact on our student-athletes.”
Basti served as defensive coordinator and face-off coach in his
one year at Lafayette. He was also heavily involved in both recruiting
and scouting. Lafayette finished with an overall record of 4-9 in 2008.
A former player at Fairfield, Basti returned to his alma mater as
an assistant coach for the 2005 season. Involved in day-to-day operations of the program, he worked as assistant offensive coordinator and
oversaw the face-off men. In 2005, Fairfield ranked as high as 15th in
the national rankings on its way to a Great Western Lacrosse League
championship. In 2007, the Stags reached a program-best #12 ranking.
Prior to Fairfield, Basti served as the head coach at Eastern Connecticut State University from 2002-04. He posted a 22-9 career record at ECSU while winning a pair of Little East Conference championships and earning two NCAA Tournament berths. He also worked as an
assistant coach at Sacred Heart University from 2000-02, leading the
face-off and defensive units.
As a student-athlete at Fairfield, Basti helped the Stags to a
MAAC regular season championship and two ECAC Tournament titles.
He was also a member of the 1996 and 1997 MAAC championship
teams. Basti graduated from Fairfield in 1999 with degrees in politics
and history and returned to complete his Master’s Degree in education/social studies in 2002.

BANALETTI
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Sixth Season
Hofstra ’90
Steven Banaletti returns for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant
coach on the Hartford lacrosse staff. A 1990 graduate of Hofstra University, Banaletti was a four-year starter on the lacrosse team and
helped the squad to back-to-back East Coast Conference championships.
Banaletti made his collegiate coaching debut with the Hawks
in 2004. He previously served as an assistant coach at Xavier High
School in 2003 and has coached at numerous camps, including at
Chaminade High School and Hofstra.
Banaletti graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and currently works at Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. He resides in Higganum, CT.

AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE
Since its modest beginning as a men’s basketball-only conference in
1979, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive
NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based, competitive athletics programs, complementing the academic integrity
and missions of the member institutions.
Each of the nine institutions - University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of
Maine, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), University of
New Hampshire, Stony Brook University, and University of Vermont - offers a unique blend of academic and athletic tradition.
Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,200 student-athletes, America East recognizes champions in each of its 21 sports:
men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross
country, field hockey, women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track
and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor
track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s
volleyball. America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes.
With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the United States, America East has a population
base of more than 50 million people and nearly 30 million television
homes. America East member institutions include more than 106,000
students on the nine campuses and boast nearly one million living
alumni.
ATHLETIC SUCCESS
America East enters its 21st year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history, as
five of its 10 team sport champions won at least one game in the NCAA
Championship and two other teams received at-large tournament bids.
In addition, one student-athlete won a national championship and 20
others garnered All-America recognition.
UMBC overcame a nine-goal deficit to upend Albany, 14-13, in
the finals of the America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Retrievers, who won a school-record 12 games, were edged by national
semifinalist Virginia, 10-9, in the first round of the NCAA Championship. UMBC finished the season ranked No. 6 in the USILA poll. Albany
and Stony Brook were also ranked at one point during the season. Five
America East standouts were chosen All-Americans by the USILA with
UMBC’s Terry Kimener receiving second-team recognition.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
America East institutions boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in
2007-08 while another 19 were tabbed All-District selections.
A total of 18 America East teams received Public Recognition
Awards by the NCAA under the Division I Academic Progress Rate
(APR). The APR provides a real-time snapshot of a team’s academic
success and the academic progress of student-athletes.
More than 2,250 of America East’s 3,200 student-athletes were
named to the Academic Honor Roll after receiving grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Included in that total were 1,015 student-athletes
who earned a 3.5 or better and were named to the Commissioner’s
Honor Roll.
Vermont was awarded the America East Academic Cup for the
fourth-straight year as its student-athletes compiled a 3.14 grade-point
average, which tied for the best mark in the award’s 13-year history.

Overall, America East student-athletes compiled a 3.02 GPA during the
2007-08 academic year.
COMMISSIONER’S CUP
Boston University took home the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s
Cup for the third straight year and sixth time in the last seven years.
The conference award annually recognizes the highest scoring athletic
program in America East as determined by a points system, which
rewards a school for success both during the regular season and at
championship competition in the league’s sports.
Boston University, which won six league titles, three regular-season crowns and had four runner-up finishes, tallied 378 points, the
most in three years under the current nine-member configuration.
HISTORY
To see how far America East has progressed, consider the conference
was established in 1979 as the ECAC North. The conference at that
time consisted of 10 institutions and sponsored league competition
only in men’s basketball, with the champion receiving an automatic
bid to the NCAA Championship.
Men’s basketball remained the lone league sport until the
1988-89 academic year. At that time, the conference’s Board of Directors made a new commitment to an all-sports association, creating the
North Atlantic Conference by establishing an office, hiring a full-time
commissioner, and embarking on a building program.
The North Atlantic Conference merged with the Seaboard Conference (the league in which Boston University, Hartford, Maine, New
Hampshire, and Vermont, among others, competed in women’s basketball) in 1989 and the NAC looked to establish conference championships in several men’s and women’s sports.
The conference changed its name to America East prior to the
1996-97 academic year and moved the conference headquarters to
downtown Boston in 1997.
In 2005, America East hired Patrick Nero, most recently the Director of Athletics at Maine, as the conference’s third commissioner.
The conference office moved its headquarters to Cambridge,
Mass. in July 2007.

Growth, vitality, and service to the community are key attributes of Walter Harrison’s first 10 years as president of the University of Hartford. Since his appointment as the University of Hartford’s fifth president in 1998, the University
has experienced a period of energy and momentum unmatched in its history.
President Harrison has overseen dramatic improvements in academic quality,
finances, and fundraising.
More than 7,300 students (5,600 undergraduates and 1,700 graduate
students) study at the seven schools and colleges of the University of Hartford,
which is classified as a doctoral research–intensive university by the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The institution has seen a 15
percent increase in undergraduate enrollment, and a 23 percent increase in
degrees awarded, over the past decade. A highly visible figure on campus, President Harrison is known for his enthusiasm for student life and University activities, and is fondly referred to as Walt by many students.
During President Harrison’s tenure, the University has undertaken a
vigorous and comprehensive building campaign. Many of the University’s residence halls have been renovated, and Hawk Hall, the University’s new five-story,
208-bed residence for first-year students, was completed during the summer
of 2007. The oval-shaped Alumni Plaza, constructed out of concrete of various
colors and finishes, now provides students with a large gathering spot on the
residential side of campus.
At the heart of this construction campaign are three major new additions
to the University’s signature academic programs: The Renée Samuels Center
of the Hartford Art School (opened in January 2007), the Integrated Science,
Engineering, and Technology Complex (opened in 2005), and the Mort and Irma
Handel Performing Arts Center (opened in September 2008), which houses the
Dance and Theatre divisions of The Hartt School. The Handel Center, located in
the Upper Albany and Blue Hills neighborhoods of Hartford, one mile east of the
University’s campus, also contains space for community activities.
Two buildings have been renovated to house two of the University’s leading liberal arts programs: Psychology (East Hall) and Communications and Cinema Studies (Abrahms Hall). In 2006, the University opened new state-of-the-art
athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, softball, and baseball.
The University’s vibrant relationship with the Greater Hartford community
is a hallmark of President Harrison’s tenure. The University has become a recognized leader in helping to improve public schools. It is the only private university
in the country with two public magnet schools on campus—the University of Hartford Magnet School and the University High School of Science and Engineering.
President Harrison’s community involvement is extensive. He serves on
the boards of directors of the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges
and the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education. He is currently the president
of the board of the Hartford Stage Company. He serves as trustee or director of
a number of other Hartford-area organizations, including the Greater Hartford
Arts Council, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the Connecticut Science
Center, and Suffield Academy. He is also a director of WorldBusiness Capital, an
international finance firm based in Hartford.
Reflecting his longtime interest in intercollegiate athletics, President Harrison chairs the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Committee on Academic
Performance, the group charged with implementing academic reforms among
the nation’s leading intercollegiate athletic programs, and serves on a number
of other NCAA committees. He is the immediate past chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. He also serves on the Presidential Advisory Committee of the
Association of Governing Boards.
All this is a long way from President Harrison’s beginnings as a scholar of
American literature and culture. A native of Pittsburgh, he graduated from Trinity
College in Hartford in 1968, then earned a master’s degree from the University
of Michigan in 1969. After an interim of three years to serve as a captain in the
United States Air Force, President Harrison earned a doctorate from the University of California–Davis. His doctoral dissertation, “Out of Play: Baseball Fiction
from Pulp to Art,” was one of the earliest scholarly treatments of baseball and its
place in American life.
In 1982 President Harrison left full-time teaching to take an administrative position at Colorado College. He joined Gehrung Associates University Relations Counselors in 1985, becoming president of the firm shortly thereafter. In
1989 President Harrison moved to the University of Michigan, where he became
vice president of university relations and secretary of the university.
President Harrison and his wife, Dianne, a scholar of 19th-century Victorian literature and mystery literature, make their home in Russell House, the
president’s residence at the University of Hartford.
MEISER
Pat Meiser, in her 16th year at the University of Hartford, serves as the director
of athletics and special assistant to the president.
One of only 22 women director of athletics among the 329 institutions
competing at the Division I level, Meiser has 37 years of experience in coaching
and athletics administration. In May of 1999, she was named one of the nation’s
top 50 women’s sports executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal,
and in June of 2006 she was named the Northeast Region I-AAA GeneralSports
TURF Systems Athletics Director of the Year.
At Hartford, Meiser heads a team that is responsible for growing the athletics and academic quality of the program, enhancing revenue and extending the
program into the community.
In Meiser’s tenure, seven sports (women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s volleyball)
have won America East Conference championships and either reached NCAA
Division I tournament or national postseason play. Basketball, in particular, has
emerged with Meiser’s hiring of Jennifer Rizzotti and Dan Leibovitz. The women’s
basketball team has been crowned America East Conference champion and
reached the NCAA Tournament in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2008. The men’s team
set a school record with 18 wins in 2007-08 and advanced to the America East
Championship finals for the first time in school history.
Revenue enhancement has also been an area of growth for Hartford under Meiser’s leadership. This has taken place through an expanded fund raising
and alumni relations effort, development of a corporate sponsorship program,
implementation of a licensing program and successful grant submissions. Most
significantly, Hartford athletics embarked on a $10 million athletics capital campaign in April of 2003. The campaign, called Home Field Advantage, funded the
renovation of the existing soccer and lacrosse field, the relocation and construction of a softball field, the construction of a baseball field and will include construction of a track surrounding an all-purpose field. The ground breaking for
Home Field Advantage took place in April of 2005, and Phase I of the project was
completed in 2007. Phase II is presently under way.
Meiser’s commitment to academics is well documented and demonstrated through the success of her student-athletes. Hartford has been among the
leaders in The America’s East’s Academic Cup standings each of the past 10
years. The Hawks won the Cup in 1996-97. This past academic year, the average
student-athlete GPA was 2.98.
Reaching out in the community is important for Meiser. She is past chair of
the Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau and her appointment came
at a critical time as the city opened a $350 million convention center. Meiser
was named a Connecticut “Woman of Merit” by the Girl Scouts in June 2000.
She is a board member of both the Connecticut Special Olympics and the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. In October of 2007, Meiser served as Co-Chair
of the CWHF Gala that celebrated the 35th anniversary of Title IX. The evening
brought together the top female Olympians and national champions with ties to
the state of Connecticut.
Meiser has also been involved with various intercollegiate committees and
organizations at the conference, regional and national levels. She serves on
the Executive Committee of NACDA and is a past President of the Division I-AAA
Athletics Directors Association (NACDA), has been a professional sport liaison,
member of the soccer rules committee and active as a NCAA Certification representative. Over the years, she has also served a variety of roles in the America
East Conference and is presently a member of the Executive Committee.
Prior to joining the Hawks, Meiser was the associate athletics director for
administration and senior women’s administrator at the University of Connecticut. During her 10 years at Connecticut, she played a pivotal role in the rejuvenation of the athletics program.
Before arriving at Connecticut, Meiser was the head women’s basketball
coach and a tenured faculty member at Penn State (1971-81). She gave the
first women’s basketball scholarship at Penn State in 1974 and advanced the
program to Top-20 status in the late 1970s. In addition, she coached the Gold
Medal-winning East team in the inaugural 1979 National Sports Festival.
Meiser holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education (1969)
from West Chester University and a M.Ed. in education (1971) and an MBA in
business administration (1986) from Penn State. She is a native of Lancaster,
PA, and has four children: Katherine, 36, wife of Jason Steadman of London;
Christopher, 34, husband of Renee Jansen, Boston; Julie, 32, wife of Robert
Rioux of State College, PA; and Daniel, 30, West Hartford. She also has one
grandson, Lincoln.
UNIVERSITY OF HARTFORD
SMALL CLASSES, BIG OPPORTUNITY
At the University of Hartford, classes are small, but the list of academic
offerings is not. The University is a comprehensive, independent institution, offering educational and career programs in 89 undergraduate
and 33 graduate areas of study in its seven schools and colleges. It
prides itself on providing the intimacy of a liberal arts college with the
creativity and intellectual excitement of a university.
While the range of studies offered at the University is diverse, so,
too, are the people. Enrolled are 4,796 full-time undergraduates, 841
part-time undergraduates, and 1,653 graduate students, representing 45 states and 58 countries. The full-time student-to-faculty ratio is
14:1.
TRADITION
The University of Hartford dates back to 1877, when the first of its
original three schools was founded. The Hartford Art School (1877),
Hillyer College (1879), and The Hartt School (1920) joined in 1957 to
form the University of Hartford.
The origins of the University can be traced back to the wife of
Mark Twain. Mrs. Samuel Clemens, along with Harriett Beecher Stowe
of Uncle Tom’s Cabin fame, formed an art society that later became
the Hartford Art School.
EXPANSION
The University has undertaken several ambitious building projects
over the past half decade. A $34-million Integrated Science, Engineering, and Technology complex, which included major renovations to the
adjacent Dana Hall (one of the original buildings on campus), opened
in 2005. On its heels, new turf athletics fields brought a much different
look to the opposite end of campus, benefitting students, faculty, staff,
alumni, and community residents.
The new Renée Samuels Center opened in January 2007, providing the Hartford Art School with new space for its photography and
media arts programs.
In fall 2007, Hawk Hall, a five-story residential facility for first-year
students and its adjacent Alumni Plaza, a new outdoor gathering place
for students, greeted students returning to campus.
Now open just a mile from the University’s main campus, the
Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center houses five dance studios, four theatre rehearsal studios and two black box theatres. It is a
vibrant center for dance and theatre instruction and performances at
one of the key gateways to the city of Hartford.
The University of Hartford also houses two public magnet schools
on its campus—an elementary school for students from Hartford and
several neighboring towns and University High School of Science and
Engineering, which saw its legacy class graduate this past June.
QUALITY
The University prides itself on its growing academic reputation, best
illustrated by a consistent year-to-year increase in applications (more
than 12,000 received annually) and selectivity (the University’s acceptance rate is lower than at any time in its history). The educational
experience takes place in small, supportive classroom environments.
LOCATION
The charm of the suburbs and the opportunities of the city all come
alive at the University of Hartford. Situated on a 340-acre, wooded,
suburban campus, the University borders Hartford, West Hartford, and
Bloomfield. Midway between Boston and New York City, downtown
Hartford, only five miles away, is gaining a name for itself.
HARTFORD AND THE REGION
Dubbed “New England’s rising star,” Hartford is enjoying a renaissance
fueled by the development of its riverfront. With retail and residential
development taking off, downtown Hartford is poised to become a
24-hour hub of culture, arts, and entertainment.
Within Hartford’s borders, one can tour the home of Mark Twain,
mingle with 5,000-plus years of art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, and
explore history at the oldest state house in the country. The Bushnell
and Hartford Stage Company offer traveling Broadway shows and other award-winning productions.
The XL Center and New England Dodge Music Center offer topname concerts while the former is home to the American Hockey
League’s Hartford Wolfpack.
The surrounding Connecticut countryside offers unlimited and
varied get-away possibilities, including skiing, spring garden tours,
fall festivals, and two of the world’s largest casino and entertainment
complexes.
It’s no wonder noted economist Richard Florida has ranked Hartford in the “Top 20” of cool places to live, work, start a family and have
fun.
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES
Numerous social, recreational, and entertainment alternatives exist
for students on campus. More than 100 groups, clubs, and organizations, including campus media, student government, fraternities and
sororities add to student life. The Campus Activities Team (CAT) is a
student-run organization whose sole purpose is to schedule events for
student enjoyment.
The University of Hartford has gained a national reputation for
the quality of cultural activities and fine-arts exhibits on its campus.
The Hartt School and the Joseloff Gallery of the Hartford Art School are
highly respected. Lincoln Theater, the Sports Center, and three auditoriums host numerous special events throughout the year.
STUDENT LIVING
The University of Hartford offers five different housing options, all with
the security and tranquility of a suburban campus. Students begin in
traditional residence halls as freshmen, but may opt for three different
types of apartment-style living during their upperclass years.
Food options are plentiful on campus, with two traditional dining
facilities, a sit-down restaurant, nighttime eatery, deli, premium coffee
outlet, juice and smoothie bar, and the Village Market, the University’s
own on-campus grocery store.
FACILITIES
AL-MARZOOK FIELD
Al-Marzook Field has been the home to Hartford
lacrosse for years. The facility underwent a total
renovation in the summer of 2005, complete with
a new artificial turf surface, bleachers, press box,
scoreboard and concessions area.
HARRIS FAMILY PRESS BOX
During Alumni Weekend in 2007, the University of
Hartford held a ceremony to honor Stan and Susan Harris for their outstanding contributions to
the lacrosse program. The press box at Al-Marzook
Field was officially named the Harris Family Press
Box as current and former Hawks watched from
the field.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
The Hartford Hawks strength and conditioning program is designed to develop the best gains, in the
least amount of time, in the safest way possible. It
is the goal of the staff to develop both the muscular and cardiovascular systems in a manner that is
compatible with the demands of competing as a
Division I student-athlete.
The hands-on approach not only increases
safety in the weight room, but augments results of
each athlete. The commitment from the coaching
staff is the single most determining factor which
maximizes results both in- and off-season.
The methods endorsed at Hartford are based
on research, physiological fact and years of experience. The college experience is a learning environment and the weight room is no different. The
lessons that are learned in the weight room will be
applicable to life once your playing days are over at
Hartford.
The purpose of the Hartford Hawks strength
and conditioning program is to create a bigger,
stronger, better-conditioned student-athlete that is
less susceptible to injury.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2008
This year’s lacrosse alumni weekend was held on October 11-12.
Around 25 former players attended the event, which included the annual alumni game and a fundraising golf tournament.
The weekend kicked off on Saturday at Blue Fox Run Golf Course
in Avon, CT as over 70 people took part in the golf tournament. Prizes
were awarded for first, second and third place. The tournament also
included raffles and contests (longest drive, closest to the pin, longest
putt), and all participants received a t-shirt.
The main attraction of the weekend was the annual alumni game.
Spectators looked on as the alumni team fought hard but eventually
fell victim to the current Hartford roster.
