New Staff Members At Flinthills Schools
Volume 1, Issue 7 BOXHOLDER ROSALIA, KS 67132 September 2006 New Staff Members At Flinthills Schools By Deedra Baker This year the Flinthills Middle/High School welcomes middle school social studies teacher Larry McNown, and high school science teacher Patrick Mr. McNown Navin. Mr. McNown grew up in El Dorado, and graduated from El Dorado High School. He attended college at Butler Community College, Emporia University, Tulsa University, and the University of Kansas. He was an undergraduate in the field of secondary education, and went to graduate school in athletic administration and exercise physiology. Before arriving at Flinthills, Mr. McNown was in the Heidelberg, Germany, area. In his freetime, Mr. McNown spends time with his family, hunts, fishes, and enjoys attending sporting events. He is “a huge KU fan!!” McNown says he decided to be in education because it is fun to learn to assist students as they prepare for life after school. Mr. Navin “Flinthills Middle School is great,,, excellent staff, faculty, students, and facilities,” said Mr. McNown. The new high school science teacher is Mr. Patrick Navin. Mr. Navin went to high school in Federal Way, Washington, Hentsville, Alabama, Hon League City, Texas, and Arlington, Texas. He attended the University of North Texas located in Denton, Texas. Mr. Navin started with a major in physics, but changed it to chemistry. Before coming to FHS, Mr. Navin taught at a small east Texas high school. “After my daughter was born, I decided to give something back to the world. I recalled how much fun teaching was when I was in graduate school, and that is when I decided to start teaching,” Mr. Navin said. Mr. Navin has also taken on the responsibility of being a senior sponsor. He enjoys Flinthills because of the students’ work ethic, overall good NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 1 ROSALIA, KS 67132 behavior, and nice staff. Though Larry Gawith is not new to the district, he is however, in a new role as middle/high school principle. Bob Diepenbrock also changed roles as he is now the elementary prin- Food for Thought High School Sports Page 2 Senior Night Page 4 Administrators Pages 6 and 7 The difference between school and life? The team also returns head coach Erik Sorum, and assistant coach Mark McNemee. Coach McNemee is optimistic about the season because the players have not let down in any game, and continue to be extremely energized. Consistency is something that Coach Sorum feels like the players on the team still need to improve on. The purpose of these assessments are to help guide our teachers on how best to educate their students, measure the academic growth of individual students, and measure the school’s progress as a whole to improving education. In fact, the staff development days prior to the beginning of school were devoted to 1) examining our mission and analyzing if we were indeed meeting that goal and how to improve our instruction to do so and 2) improving technology skills of the staff members including the integration of technology in instruction. We will try to incorporate as much “Learning by Doing” (a theme that emerged during the staff development days) as we can. A couple of examples are listed below. The Prairie Project theme of the primary school at Cassoday (begun last year) is studying the animals of the prairie. They are trying to arrange a field trip to do just that similar to a field trip last year. The primary school continues to work hard to keep up with the demands of the prairie plant-landscaping project and is working hard to eliminate unwanted weeds in front of the school. In fact, a workday to pull weeds combined with an ice cream social is planned and parents should have received notice by this printing. The intermediate school is off to a good start as well and what a wonderful time to study the solar system. The International Association of Astronomers recently decided to remove planetary status for Pluto so our solar system has changed. Fifth grade students acted out a model of the solar system, are in the process of illustrating it, and will do lunar logs. They are also learning about the nature of science and how changes in scientific thought occur with the acquisition of new evidence over time; e.g. Pluto is no longer a planet. They plan to culminate their activities with a field trip to the Kansas Cosmosphere. Elsewhere in the newspaper, you will find an article from the Love and Logic institute describing the “One Year Plan”. I would encourage you to try to use it because, as a parent myself, I found my kids responded far more appropriately using Love and Logic. When I didn’t get mad, but showed empathy for my children when they made bad choices and had consequences for inappropriate behavior, everyone got along better and I believe my kids learned a great deal more responsibility for their actions. Anger normally associated with getting into trouble quickly turns inward when kids understand undesired consequences are a result of a child’s own actions. It could lead to a great school year at home. Teachers are excited, students are working hard, and I believe the school year is off to a great start. I hope to see the excitement grow and continue to look forward to continued successes as the year progresses. The One Year Plan: A Parent’s Guide for Helping Children Succeed in School 1. Love and Logic parents remember that parents can’t teach for teachers and teachers can’t parent for parents. Remember that teachers and parents can’t learn for kids no matter how much we love them. 2. Show the same amount of love for your children regardless of their success in school. a. Show sadness rather than anger when they have trouble at school. 3. Expect your children to do their share of the chores at home. 4. Spend some time each day talking with excitement about your work and your day. They will want to imitate you and will soon begin to talk about school and their day. 5. Take turns reading to each other every day. 6. Have your children teach you something they have learned at school. Do this once per week. 7. Encourage your children to do things that “charge their batteries.” Encourage them to try many different activities as a way of discovering interests and talents. a. Remind them that they will build their careers around their talents, not around their weaknesses. 8. Provide a time and place for homework. Expect that they will study. Allow them to study either by writing the assignments or thinking hard about them for a reasonable amount of time. a. If they decide to study by thinking instead of writing or reading, have them think of a plan for explaining it to the teacher. b. Support the teacher to handle this. 1. Don’t fight with children over the homework. 2. Don’t fight with the teachers over the grade or consequence. 3. Tell your children that you will love them regardless of their grades and sad for the children about their bad grades. 9. Don’t pay your children for good grades and don’t punish for bad grades. Be ex- cited about the good grades and sad for the children about their bad grades. 10. Have your children bring home papers. a. Look at the right answers instead of the wrong ones. b. Don’t correct the wrong answers—leave this for the teacher. c. Have your children explain the reasons for the answers being right. If they don’t know, give them three choices: 1. You cheated? 2. You tried hard? 3. You are getting smarter in that subject? 11. Expect this Love and Logic program to take about one year before you see good results. Remember that children who have a hard time at school need to get away from it for a while each day. More homework and problems at home about school won’t help. a. Don’t complain to teachers that they should give this child more homework. b. Use this program instead and you will see amazing results in one year. c. Fight with you children and their teachers about homework and the problem will still be there in years to come. 12. Love and Logic parents remember that highly successful people put most of their efforts into their talents and maintain minimal standards on everything else. It is a great time when the students return each fall. We welcome Ms. Abbey Thorne who is helping with our additional second grade group at Flinthills Primary in Cassoday, Ms. Sarah Hinde who is helping with our additional fifth grade class at Flinthills Intermediate of Rosalia, and Mr. Pat Navin, high school science instructor. This summer saw that Mr. Willhite left for an exciting position that will continue to challenge him. Mr. Kern helped me plan some of the maintenance projects that will help to make things better for our students and staff. Mr. Donner and Ms. Peterson helped to maintain our lawn and sports complex. All in all the summer was a very productive time. The new school sign is now lit up, and we have plans to have the sports banners Flinthills Flyer Administrators up soon. I would like to thank the School Site Council for all of their hard work in planning facility improvements. There may be other projects that the school principals will take to them to continue their important help with the schools of our district. The Kansas State Assessments preliminary report looks like we made our Adequate Yearly Progress. Watch for news from the principals on updates on how the testing programs are going. I look forward to this school year and again ask for everyone to think about safety in all that they do, both at school and when we are not in school. Flinthills Flyer Page 7 Administrators Go With Gawith By Larry Gawith Flinthills middle/high school’s mission statement is to: Assure safe positive learning environment. Provide a wellrounded curriculum. Promote academic excellence. Recognize individual differences and needs. Provide opportunities for involvement by all students. Develop pride in self, school, and community. The part of the mission I would like to address is the last one, pride in self. Pride in ones self can come in many forms form how we take care of our self, the clothes that we wear, to the people that we consider friends. Today’s schools are getting more involved helping students take better care of their bodies. The kitchen staff has become more aware of the food that they are serving our students at breakfast and lunch. We are working on limiting the amount of sugary snacks and drinks that are available in our vending machines. We have added “Walk for Life” classes to allow stu- dents opportunity to exercise who may not be interested in sports. Flinthills enforces a dress code 7-12 that restricts some of the clothes students wear. In today’s society, the trends in fashion may not meet the requirements of our dress code; however, students who have pride in themselves will make the appropriate decision as to their clothing choices. As the school year starts to get in full swing students are testing the limits of the school dress code. Please discuss appropriate clothing choices with your teenagers to enable them to show pride in their self. Finally, those who we consider friends often have the greatest influence on the pride that we have in ourselves. If we associate with people that do not take pride in their self and display a good work ethic, it causes us to feel and act the same way. The opposite is true if we associate ourselves with others who take pride in their appearance and work habits. As students and adults, we make decisions on who we socialize with on a daily basis. If we find ourselves in groups that do not take pride in their self then we have a choice to make. Do we continue in that group or do we find others who have pride in what they are doing. Many of the decisions that our students make during their middle and high school careers will carry with them throughout their life. My challenge for each student is to ask them- FLINTHILLS HIGH SCHOOL BOSTER CLUB 806 SE Rosalia Road Rosalia, KS 67132 Proposed Meeting Schedule for the 2006/2007 School Year Meeting Location: Flinthills High School October 16, 2006 7:00 p.m. November 20, 2006 7:00 p.m. December 18, 2006 7:00 p.m. January 15, 2007 7:00 p.m. February 19, 2007 7:00 p.m. March 19, 2007 7:00 p.m. April 16, 2007 7:00 p.m. May 21, 2007 7:00 p.m. Additional activities: Fall Dinner Theatre – We will be serving dinner at 6:00 p.m. prior to the Saturday performance of the fall theatre production – date to be announced.
