Dear Students & Family Members,
Welcome to Orientation 2009 at Florida State University! We are very excited that you
are here and look forward to spending this time with you. Orientation is designed to help
students prepare for college and to assist family members in understanding their student’s
transition. Over a two day period you will be attending presentations and programs that
have been specifically designed for students and families.
The Holopaw, a Creek Indian word meaning “pathways”, is your guide to campus for the
next two days. We believe that orientation will serve as the first step in your journey towards
becoming part of the rich heritage that is Florida State University. In the following pages
you will find both the student and family orientation schedules. You will notice that some
of your programs are together while others are not. We ask that you only attend sessions
that are on your schedule. You will be given the same information throughout orientation
and have plenty of time to speak with each other. Please remember that students are
required to attend all of their orientation programs before they will be cleared for course
registration, and attendance will be carefully taken during some of our sessions.
Within the Holopaw you will find the names and photos of the 2009 Orientation Leaders.
Orientation Leaders are current Florida State University students who will serve as your
liaison to campus. These students are campus experts and here to assist you over the next
two days — please feel free to ask them anything!
We hope that you enjoy orientation and, more importantly, that you leave campus feeling
excited about Florida State University! Have a great visit and best wishes for your Florida
State University experience.

VIRES • ARTES • MORES
The seal of Florida State University, which was designed by
the combined talents of the Art and Classics Departments,
has its origins in the first decade of the 20th century during the
administration of President Albert A. Murphree.
The torches on the seal symbolize the fire given to man by the
Greek god Prometheus. These torches symbolize the purpose
of the University: passing on of knowledge from generation to
generation. The torch on the left is Vires: strength of all kinds,
physical, moral and intellectual. The center torch is Artes: that
which we acquire, knowledge that transcends skills, and the
appreciation of beauty. The torch on the right is Mores: customs,
characters and tradition. Through these three ideas the student is
educated physically, mentally, and morally.
Family Connection: family.fsu.edu
Family Connection was founded by family members to
promote the important role families play in a student’s academic
and non-academic success — as well as the life of the University.
Florida State University believes that families should be involved
in the collegiate experience and support this relationship through
information sharing, education, programming, and opportunities
for involvement. All family members of current Florida
State University students are considered members of Family
Connection.
