I
n his first epistle to the Corinthians in the Bible, the Apostle Paul expounded on the timeless virtues of faith, hope,
and above all, love. “Love never fails,” he recorded, and of the three intrinsically connected points, accorded that
“the greatest of these is love”.
The early women of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) too recognised these virtues and
established the movement with the classic motto, “By love serve one another”. This simple truth has been the
driving force of the Association’s success till the present and beyond.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The theme for this year’s Annual Report is “Faith, Hope and Love”. Over the past year, we hope that by our
programmes and activities, we have expressed our faith and love by service to the community and carried out
our motto of “By love serve one another”.
Founded in 1875, the YWCA of Singapore has endured times of war and peace, hardship and prosperity,
uncertainty and stability to emerge as a forerunner in the voluntary welfare field. As the oldest women’s
organisation in Singapore with its mission to serve the Community regardless of race, belief or religion, the YWCA
has embraced myriad peoples, causes and initiatives in the pursuit of compassionate and quality programmes,
facilities and services.
The YWCA of Singapore was started in 1875 by an English missionary, Ms Sophia Cooke, who believed
strongly in improving the status of women and children. Today, we hope we have maintained her beliefs and
carried out our mission to serve the community with love and compassion; and to provide quality programmes,
facilities and services to advance the development of women and girls in body, mind and spirit. In all our
programmes and activities, our community projects and in our social enterprises, we endeavour to make a
difference to the community.
Through its estimable history, only change, providence and the indefatigable spirit of women united to do
good have been constants. Characterised by their embodiment of the three virtues, the names and identities of
these extraordinary women have varied over the years, but their heritage lives on to be taken up by the rising
generation of YWCA leaders, volunteers and changemakers.
The Association is grateful to all the donors for their generous donations and to our corporate partners,
partnering agencies and other volunteers who have been so giving with their time and talents, and contributed
in many other ways to help in the various activities and programmes of the Association throughout the past year.
On the cusp of our 140th anniversary, we trace the abiding trails of faith, hope and love through the Association,
intricately woven into every aspect of our work. And through the rise and fall of yet another year, that which
remains is indeed our grounded faith, our hopeful perspective and our all encompassing love.
I wish to record my grateful thanks to the members of the Board, the dedicated volunteers and our loyal staff
who have served and are serving the Association with faith and commitment and who have shown that they
have hope for the future of the Association and her beneficiaries and as a result, are carrying out our motto “to
serve one another by love”.

T
hese are times of uncertainty. As I write this, uncertainty weighs on the whereabouts of MH370, a flight that
appears to have disappeared into thin air, with 239 people on board. Then, there was an unprecedented
period of drought in our tropical island, setting a new record for the driest month since 1869. And with the
worst case of haze in Singapore’s history fresh in our memories, we are told to prepare for possibly even more
hazardous levels of haze in the coming months.
The YWCA is a united movement of women based on Christian faith and love with the purpose of bringing
women into a community fellowship through which they may grow as Christians by faith, word and deed.
Mission
The mission of the Association is to serve the Community regardless of race, belief or religion, with love and
compassion and provide quality programmes, facilities and services to:
i) advance the development of women and girls in body, mind and spirit; and
ii) benefit the Community.
The Association may work with other organisations and agencies to fulfil her mission.
Core Values
In these times of uncertainty, we need faith, hope and love.
These core values underlie our attitudes and behaviour, our interaction with each other and the strategies we
employ to carry out the mission and objectives of the Association.
Faith is not pretending. Faith is not psyching yourself up to believe something that you know is not true. Faith is
an attitude of confidence. “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews
11:1, NIV)
The five core values are:
But soon, faith has to give way to hope. As it sometimes happens in life, our confidence and certainty fades.
What we have left is hope – a desire for a certain thing to happen, a wish for a certain outcome or a yearning
for a certain result.
But sometimes even hope fades. And all we are left with is love – love for and from the people around us and
love from the God who is love. But we know from human experience that the love for and from the people
around us will waver.

To willingly give of oneself and one’s knowledge and skills in service to the Association and to bring glory to
God.
b. Compassion
To love and care for our users and beneficiaries, to help the community and improve the status of women
and children.
c. Commitment
To provide excellent service, relevant programmes and other initiatives that impact lives both within and
outside the Association.
Hence, the only thing left for us to cling on to in these times of uncertainty is the love of God. And we have faith
and hope in this eternal love because God demonstrated His love towards us, even when we are undeserving,
by giving His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross so that we might have faith, hope and love.
d. Respect
To value the unique contribution and worth of every person and have due regard for the feelings and rights
of others.
In these times of uncertainty, YWCA has brought much needed faith, hope and love into the lives of those she
serves. May the Lord continue to bless and grow the ministry of the YWCA so that many more people will
find faith, hope and love in Jesus.

The YWCA is governed by its Constitution and is in
compliance with the Code of Governance for Charities
and Institutions of Public Character issued by the Charity
Council, Charities (Institutions of a Public Character)
Regulations and Charities Act and Regulations. The
overall governance level of the Association has been
rated strong in a governance review carried out
by Deloitte & Touche under the commission of the
National Council of Social Service in August 2008.

The YWCA is governed by a Board of Management
whereby Board Members are made up of volunteers
elected according to her Constitution. Being the
highest level policy- and decision-making body of
the Association, the Board of Management has the
ultimate responsibility of ensuring that the Association
is well-managed and delivers her charitable objectives.

The Board of Management comprises of the President,
two Vice Presidents, Honorary Secretary, Honorary
Treasurer and other elected Board Members. All
Board Members serve a two-year term. Board
Members who have served in the same position for
four consecutive years are not eligible for re-election
for the same position. Board Members cannot serve
on the Board for more than twelve consecutive years
as an elected member.

The accounts of the Association are audited annually
by a Public Accountant appointed by voting members
at each Annual General Meeting.
ConflictS of Interest Policy
The YWCA has a Conflicts of Interest Policy which is
based on the general principle that Board Members
and staff should act in the best interest of the YWCA
and there should be no vested or personal interest
or interest of third parties. This policy is applicable to
Board Members, senior staff and any other staff who
may be able to influence the decision-making process.
Board Members will make a formal declaration at
the beginning of each new term to comply with the
Conflicts of Interest Policy. Senior staff will make a
formal declaration at the time of signing the letter
of offer for employment and subsequently on an
annual basis. Details of the policy and situations in
which a conflict of interest may arise are stated in the
declaration form for Board Members and Senior Staff.
Where conflict of interests are inevitable, the affected
party/parties must declare such interest(s) as soon
as possible and refrain from discussion and decisionmaking pertaining to the matter.
Reserves Management Policy
YWCA targets to maintain an optimum level of
operating reserves, which is equivalent to three years
of its budgeted expenditure, from surpluses generated
through its social enterprises. These reserves will be
the source of funding to ensure that the Association’s
beneficiaries and the needy in the community will
continue to receive assistance in the event when
donations dry up or during an economic downturn.
This will create sustainability and continuity of the
programmes run by YWCA.
In addition, the Association also maintains a capital
replacement fund for large-scale asset renewal and has
designated funds for training and major projects. This
allows the Association to focus her fundraising efforts
for her programmes.
Investment Policy
Whistle Blowing Policy
The Finance & Investment Committee oversees the
investments of surplus funds. The Investment Policy,
as approved by the Board of Management, is
constantly reviewed to allow for flexibility according
to the market environment. Prudence and good
stewardship are exercised in relation to the investment
of the Association’s funds with a view to generating
reasonable returns with a minimum amount of risk.
The Whistle Blowing Policy of YWCA aims to provide
an avenue for employees to raise concerns. The Policy
offers assurance that the employees will be protected
from victimisation for whistle blowing in good faith.
Audit Committee
The Audit Committee is appointed by the Board
of Management to assist the Board in fulfilling its
responsibilities for the financial reporting process, the
system of internal controls, the audit process and
compliance with laws and regulations.

The Association believes in the importance of staff
development and training and has continued its
commitment to train and upgrade our staff to
remain relevant to their jobs and to keep pace with
the changing world. During the year, 157 employees

courses as shown in the below table.

Board members and key staff attended a two-day
training cum retreat workshop on 27 and 28 July 2013
at the Rafffles Marina Club. It was a Christian and
Biblically-influenced workshop on selected modules of
John C. Maxwell’s Leadership Connection Workshop
series and helped participants find their entrepreneurial
style using the BOSI assessment. The Board and staff
were also able to come together for strategic planning.
New HR Initiatives for 2014
With the successful implementation of the new HR
Management system the previous year, the following
activities are planned for 2014 initiatives:
1. Job description revamp for all positions in the
Association;
2. Internship programme commencement for Fort
Canning Lodge in collaboration with the Institute of
Technical Education on a six-month basis commencing
from October 2014 to March 2015;
3. HR Manual and Employee Handbook revision.

Long Service Awards
A total of 19 staff were recognised for their years of
service to the YWCA at the Annual General Meeting
of the Association held in April 2013. The list of award
recipients are:
Staff Annual Dinner & Dance
The Annual Staff Dinner & Dance was held at the
Holiday Inn Hotel (Orchard City Centre) on 30
August 2013. The theme for the night, ‘70s Friday Nite
Fever’ made it a joyous and memorable evening for
our 220 staff and 10 Board members who attended.
The evening was filled with fun and games and many
sportingly dressed up to the ‘70s theme. Topping
off the event was the sumptuous buffet spread and
blessings draw that closed the night on a high note.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

Youth Centre Opening
The YWCA Youth Centre officially opened on 1
March 2013 after months of anticipation. It features
a mentoring area, recreational area and kitchenette.
The objective of the Youth Centre is to reach out to
youths aged between 13 to 18 years old living within
the Outram vicinity, to engage them and help them
discover and develop new skills.
Reverend Ivan Lee was invited to do the opening
prayer and blessing of the Youth Centre. Guests for the
opening included the YWCA Board of Management
and representatives from YMCA, AG Home, Prison
Fellowship Singapore, and Social Health Growth.
Various workshops such as baking, cooking, sewing,
jewellery making, and arts and craft were conducted
throughout the year at the Youth Centre, especially
during the school holidays. The Youth Centre also
welcomed girls from the AG Home every Tuesday for
a dedicated series of homemaking workshops.
The Youth Centre has gradually achieved its aim to be
a sanctuary for youths to hang out, relax and acquire
useful skills since its opening. We look forward to
welcoming more youths in the coming year.
Cook-Outs
The YWCA held a total of four Cook-Out sessions
in 2013, providing 150 Meals-on-Wheels beneficiaries
with a special Saturday lunch each time. To create the
elderly- and child-friendly menus and lead the kitchen,
we invited volunteer Chefs Mrs Anne Loh, Ms JJ Ng
and Mr Jeremy Nguee.
Popular for team-building especially amongst corporate
volunteers, the YWCA welcomed Avnet Asia Pte
Ltd to its first Cook-Out on 28 September. Regular
Cook-Out partner, UPS Singapore participated on 11
May then returned on 19 October for the American
Community Service Week and were visited at
the session by United States Ambassador, Mr Kirk
Wagar and his wife Crystal. UPS further opted for
an additional third session on 23 November to include
family and friends of staff. The organisation has signed
on for six sessions in 2014, with monthly Cook-Outs
commencing from July.
CHRISTMAS FAIR
16 November 2013 was the event everyone was looking
forward to at the YWCA. It was an unusually bustling
sight at the Fort Canning Lodge with huge white
tents and tables full of displays set up amongst surging
crowds at the courtyard. On this beautiful Saturday,
the YWCA held her biennial Christmas Fair, in which
staff from all divisions along with many passionate
volunteers came together to set up fundraising stalls
and activities galore.
FLAG DAY 2013
On Saturday 17 August, the YWCA held her annual
Flag Day event. For 2013, 400 Flag Day tins were
issued to YWCA staff and volunteers. Five operation
centres were set up across the island at Fort Canning
Lodge, Velocity at Novena, and Jurong East, Ang Mo
Kio and Pasir Ris MRT Stations. Fundraisers spread
out all over Singapore to appeal to the public for their
generous donations. To aid them, a flyer was created
to encourage donations of $2, equivalent to the cost
of one Meals-on-Wheels meal. The YWCA was not
only blessed with charitable donors that day but with
committed volunteers who braved rain and shine.
The tins were opened the next working day and the
donations were diligently counted by YWCA Board
members and National Office staff all through the
morning and early afternoon. The amount of street
collections totalled up to over $37,000. Punggol
Secondary School also managed to raise $4,788
through pledge card collections. The YWCA was very
blessed to receive $10,000 from the Lee Foundation
and $5,000 from the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation
through appeal letters sent earlier. Adding up other
donations, the final amount raised for Flag Day 2013
is $72,314.20. All proceeds will go towards funding
and sustaining YWCA’s ongoing and upcoming
community services and programmes.
Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved: from our
President Ms Tan Kee Leng who visited most of
the operation centres that day, to our Fund Raising
Chairperson Ms Vivien Lai who took time out to make
heartfelt appeals with her own donation tin alongside
staff and volunteers at Ang Mo Kio, to the Mealson-Wheels drivers and attendants who shuttled the
hundreds of tins back and forth, to every precious
staff and volunteer who gave their best for charity;
the YWCA exceeded our 2013 fundraising goal of
$50,000 to bless the lives of our beneficiaries for
another year.
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT
To express our appreciation for the precious volunteers
and donors from various walks of life, the YWCA held
its first Volunteer Appreciation Night on 8 November
2013 at the Sophia Cooke Ballroom in Fort Canning
Lodge. Over 100 guests joined in the celebration,
including our dedicated YWCA Board and Committee
members, with volunteers and donors ranging from
corporates, church groups, individuals and students.
Performances were put up by staff, beneficiaries and
volunteers themselves, and a cute ‘Thank You’ video
clip featuring our young and senior beneficiaries was
screened. Amidst the lively atmosphere, Certificates of
Appreciation were awarded to regular volunteers by
our President, Ms Tan Kee Leng.
The Christmas Fair was a full day’s affair, running
from 10am to 6pm. A total of 24 stalls were set up
throughout the first floor of the Lodge. Supporters of the
Christmas Fair could indulge themselves in scrumptious
food and home-baked Christmas goodies. Handmade
wares, apparel, as well as Christmas decorations and
trinkets were also available for purchase as Christmas
presents. The children were spoilt for game choices at
the Multi-Purpose Hall and could be pampered with
nail art, face painting, balloon sculpture and a special
art and craft corner.
The Lodge was filled with a jolly festive atmosphere
as Christmas songs were played throughout the day.
At the lobby, children from all 10 Child Development
Centres entertained guests and supporters with song
and dance items with professional aplomb. They were
joined by students volunteers from ITE College West
with their own number. Trevor Nerva also graciously
volunteered as the guest emcee.
The event was a great success, raising approximately
$40,000 in total, which will go into funding the
YWCA’s various community services.
KIDS’ CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
The biggest YWCA children’s event of 2013 took
place on Saturday, 21 December with the Kids’ Club
Christmas Party. Held at the Sophia Cooke Ballroom in
Fort Canning Lodge, the event saw over 100 children
from the Meals-on-Wheels for Children and Kids’
Club programmes come together with their families.
The Party kicked off with balloon sculpting, face painting
and games booths during registration. Guest emcee,
Vivienne Tseng, warmed the crowd and introduced
the showcase of what the Kids’ Club children had
accomplished through the year. There were music
performances by the Kids’ Club handbells group and
YWCA’s very own girl band sang ‘Feliz Navidad’.
Their instructors from Intune Music also serenaded the
audience. After lunch, 13 children returned to the stage
for the performance highlight -- a fast and lively dance
to the classic ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’. They
were joined by their volunteer dance instructors, all
students from Raffles Junior College’s Dance Club.
Aside from performances, Paper Chase brought 20
volunteer artists and designers to conduct an art
activity for the children to make their own hanging
paper Christmas trees. The Party was also a platform
for the YWCA Bursary and Kids’ Club Awards, with
Ms Foo Chek Chiang and Ms Dorene Yeo of the
Board disbursing the Distinction and Merit Bursaries,
and the Kids’ Club Award respectively. Thereafter,
Godmother of Singapore Storytelling, Ms Sheila Wee
came for a session of fun moralistic stories before the
Christmas Wishlist reveal.
All Wishlist items were generously sponsored and the
children could choose an ukulele or stuffed toy besides
the usual options of school needs. There was a literal
roar of enthusiasm throughout the ballroom as they
uncovered their very own Christmas Wishlist gift.
FORT CANNING LODGE
OPERATIONS
Projects
The Fort Canning Lodge (FCL) faced stiffer
competition in 2013 as the supply of hotel rooms
and new facilities in Singapore continued to increase.
Nevertheless, the property registered Room revenue of
$6.93 million and F&B revenue of $2.43 million for the
year. The total revenue was $10.83 million (including
rentals) and exceeded the previous year by about
$403,000 or 4%. The net operating profit of $4.09
million has also exceeded the budget by $173,000
(or 4%) and it was higher than the previous year by
$298,000 (or 8%).
The renovation of FCL was completed in 2013. The
last major improvement to the building, which was
the replacement of the Fireman/Service lifts from the
basement level to 13th storey, was successfully completed
and commissioned on 29 November. FCL will continue
to carry out minor upgrading and renovation as part
of its building maintenance programme.
Community
To improve our service standard, productivity
and responsiveness to market conditions, FCL has
implemented a new Micros-Fidelio Opera Property
Management System (PMS) to replace the ageing
Hotel Information System (HIS). A PMS Project
Team that comprised staff from the Front Office,
Reservations, Housekeeping and Finance was formed
to oversee the planning and implementation of the
new system. After almost six months of hard work
that included the identification of users’ requirements,
negotiation with vendors, user training, and migration
of data from the old system to the new one, Phase
One of the system went ‘LIVE’ on 1 December 2013
without a hitch.
Staff
During the year, Fort Canning Lodge was a proud
recipient of a Certificate of Recommendation from the
online travel portal Tripadvisor1. This recognition was
based on a member survey conducted by Tripadvisor
on its global travellers community, including those
who had stayed with us and provided positive
feedback. The Certificate is an endorsement for hotels
whose facilities and services have met its members’
expectations. Tripadvisor’s endorsement is unique
and gives assurance to international travellers that the
Lodge is a choice accommodation in Singapore. For
FCL, this was a morale booster to our staff, affirming
that they have done well in delivering quality services
to our guests.
TripAdvisor is a major global travel website that assists customers
in gathering travel information, posting reviews and opinions of
travel-related content.

The Fort Canning Lodge hosted the YWCA Christmas
Fair in 2013. FCL staff delivered their strong support
for the Christmas Fair by helping with logistics
coordination and venue arrangement. They also
contributed to the fundraising effort by setting up a
food stall which proved to be one of the popular stalls
of the day. Family and friends enjoyed a wonderful
and blessed time at the Fair.
The tight labour market in Singapore has persisted.
It got worse under a more stringent foreign workers’
policy and that made staffing of FCL more difficult.
FCL has been operating below the necessary headcount
in all the Departments for the entire year.
Regardless, FCL has strengthened its management
team with the new General Manager, Ms Sharon
Seong, new Reservations Manager Ms Angelina Tan
and Front Office Manager Mr Ravi S/O Ganapathy.
Together with the existing Heads of Department, the
FCL Management Team continues to lead our staff in
pursuit of more business and to deliver quality services
to our guests.
To address high staff turnover and difficulties in
recruitment, FCL is exploring an internship programme
with ITE’s School of Hospitality. The idea is to provide
students who intend to build a career in the Hospitality
industry opportunities to work as interns in FCL and
get to immerse in the work of the Lodge, our culture
and mission. At the end of the internship, promising
students will be invited to join the Lodge for a fulltime career. The programme also aims to build the
reputation of the Lodge as a choice employer. We will
share more about this programme in the next annual
report after it is implemented in late 2014.
Looking forward
2014 will be a challenging year. FCL will reposition itself
and clearly identify the market segments of growth in
the ever competitive marketplace with focus on the
corporate and church sectors, as well as certain travel
agents. We continue to pray for God’s protection and
guidance that the Fort Canning Lodge will remain as
a successful social enterprise of the YWCA.
Under Phase One, the PMS and Point-of-Sale (POS)
systems were installed. The new systems enable the
Rooms Division’s staff such as Front Office, Reservations
and Housekeeping to have a seamless and functional
PMS system to work with. Phase Two of the project
will see the installation of the Sales & Catering module
that would help the Room Sales and F&B Sales Teams
to plan and manage bookings using a common
computer database instead of doing it manually. We
look forward to having FCL services being delivered
at higher standards and with better efficiency.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
CENTRES &
KINDERGARTEN
As of 1 March 2014, our 10 Childcare Centres
have enrolled over 700 students and our Outram
Kindergarten has almost 100 preschoolers in its threeand four-hours programme. Additionally, a total of
220 more students are on our waiting list. The intakes
of children are staggered to ensure that the newly
enrolled ones are settled comfortably into the Centres
before more join in. As the staff strength of teachers
increases, we are confident that those children on our
waiting list will have shorter waiting times to secure a
place in our Centres.
VISIT BY ACTING MINISTER CHAN
CHUN SING
Acting Minister for Ministry of Social and Family
Development, Mr Chan Chun Sing, visited the YWCA
Outram Centre on 23 January 2013. Mr Chan was
accompanied by YWCA President, Ms Tan Kee
Leng, Executive Director, Mrs Leung Yee Ping, and
Preschool Manager, Ms Sandy Koh, on a walkabout
around Outram Kindergarten and Outram Child
Development Centre.
Mr Chan also made a stop at a classroom and mingled
with the children before making his announcement on
details of the new subsidy framework, which were
implemented with effect from 1 April 2013.

CDC
Besides being profitable, the learning environment at the
winning centres are supportive, relaxed and safe, with
the children taking an active role in learning through
hands-on and child-centered activities. The staff are
vibrant, enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs
and work without complaint in overcoming the many
challenges they face such as shortage of teachers,
limited resources, competition from neighbouring
centres, and even the absence of a Principal.
Best Efforts Centres: Pasir Ris and Marine Drive CDC
The Best Efforts Centres are identified as centres which
excel at helping children and staff “be the best they can
be” regardless of their backgrounds or achievement
levels. The staff are self-motivating and use their
personal time besides work hours to work on exciting
and enriching learning activities for their children, both
inside and outside of the classroom.
YWCA is fortunate to have dedicated staff at all its
centres who continually strive to provide high quality
care and education to our students. We are indeed
proud of all our staff.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Mediacorp Channel 5 - On the Red Dot
Our Marine Drive CDC had been selected to
participate in a segment on Channel 5’s “On the Red
Dot”. The filming at the centre took place on Friday, 14
June 2013. The Kindergarten 2 children were featured
engaging in their usual classroom activities. One of the
parents was also interviewed. The programme was
aired on television on Wednesday, 19 June 2013.
Special Feature In the Straits Times
The Straits Times published an article on training for
childcare teachers on Saturday, 27 July 2013. One
of our teachers at Bukit Gombak, Ms Tracy Er, was
featured in the article.
Curriculum Specialist Team
Christmas Fair
A team of four Curriculum Specialists was formed
in July 2013 and they had their first meeting on 13
July. The team had been tasked to review the current
curriculum and to refine it to better suit the needs
and strength of our centres’ programme staff. As they
worked in the centres with the other teachers, they
were able to receive feedback and suggestions that
would be most practical and realistic.
Mrs Evelyn Chey, one of the Child Development
Programme Committee (CDPC) members, was invited
to join the team. Mrs Chey is an Early Childhood
trainer with a wealth of professional experience in this
industry. She has also partnered Board member, Ms
Vivien Lai in 2012 to kickstart our YWCA curriculum.
Branding of Preschool
Centres
To ensure consistency in design and image, the CDPC,
together with Mrs Loh-Chiam Shock Yuen from the
Buildings Committee, visited some of our centres to
identify features that can be part of the branding
across the centres. For a start, a standard signboard
will be used for all centres. The common features
chosen by the committee as part of the branding will
be implemented when a centre is due for cyclical
maintenance.
Strategic Planning Session
for Principals
Held on 6 November 2013, the Strategic Planning
Session for Principals was a fruitful and enjoyable session
where participants brainstormed for ideas to further
enhance the current programmes for our Childcare
Centres and Kindergarten, aand to share thoughts
on addressing some of the operational concerns that
had surfaced during the year. The event ended with
a Personal Effectiveness Workshop conducted by Jill
Lowe International. The principals found the session
fulfilling and motivating.
The centres put up four stalls for the above event:
Fishing Game; Balloon Sculpting & Ball Game; Finger
Food stall; and Nasi Lemak & Chicken Curry stall.
It was a fun and relaxing day for all staff, parents and
children as they came together to enjoy the great food
and games set up at the Fort Canning Lodge.
In-House Staff Training for
Childcare Assistants
The in-house staff training for Para-Educators/
Educarers and caregivers focuses mainly on their roles
and responsibilities. Para-Educators/Educarers and
caregivers are trained with the basic skills, knowledge
and competencies needed in the care and development
of young children. Through the training, they will be
better able to play a valuable and supporting role
in assisting teachers in classroom management and
supervision of the children. The training session also
serves as a platform for participants to interact and
support each other in their work. The culmination of
the course provided a platform for the trainees to put
up displays showing samples of Notice Boards for
centres to use as communication with parents.
COMMUNITY SERVICES &
PROGRAMMES
Meals-on-Wheels
2013 was a robust year for the Meals-on-Wheels
programme as the number of beneficiaries in each of its
categories increased, and all in, over 105,000 packets
of food were delivered to the needy. The YWCA
welcomed a slew of new partners, including: F C
Catering Pte Ltd as our caterer for the meals; and two
Final Year Project student groups from the Diploma
in Applied Food Science & Nutrition programme at
Temasek Polytechnic to conduct a nutritional survey
of our child and elderly beneficiaries after September.

ELDERLY
Partners Asian Film Archive and Cathay-Keris Films
were indispensable in recommending and lending the
film, respectively. Many elderly instantly recognised the
movie title, which popularised the cha cha dance back
in the 60s, and were greatly excited to participate in
this first MOWE outing. They indulged in memories of
yesteryear as well as a lunch of familiar local favourites.
After the success of the movie outing, the YWCA
collaborated with the Esplanade to bring the elderly
out again to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival at their
Moonfest programme. It was the YWCA’s aim to care
for these elderly who frequently live alone during this
typically family-oriented festive period.
Since 1997, the Meals-on-Wheels for Elderly
(MOWE) programme has been distributing free and
nutritious lunches daily on weekdays to needy, frail
and homebound elderly aged 60 and above living in
the Outram vicinity. In 2013, the number of elderly we
reached out to increased from over 200 to over 250,
as the YWCA worked with Seniors Activity Centres
to arrange bulk deliveries that could be distributed at
partnering centres.
In August, the YWCA began conducting outings to
provide for the emotional and social well-being of
our elderly beneficiaries. This was organised following
feedback received from the elderly after the staff visited
homes to give out mandarin oranges and homemade
cookies at Chinese New Year. A movie screening of
classic Hong Kong musical masterpiece ‘Mambo Girl’
was held on 5 August 2013 for over 30 elderly and
disabled from Lions Befrienders (Bukit Merah View)
and amongst our direct beneficiaries.
14 elderly participated on 14 September 2013 for an
evening of old song classics and a lantern walkabout
with their 16 student befrienders from the Singapore
Polytechnic Community Service and Cultural Club.
The NTUC Foundation also made the occasion
sweeter by donating $600 worth of vouchers to
purchase mooncakes for all of our direct MOWE
beneficiaries. These were distributed during regular
MOWE deliveries on 16 September.
November’s outing for around 30 elderly to the
Silver Fiesta, organised by the YMCA and Central
Singapore Community Development Council rounded
up the year’s events for our MOWE beneficiaries and
won us the opportunity to interact with and enjoy the
company of our cherished elderly beneficiaries.
Through this, the children learnt how to budget, how
to care for others more than themselves, and better
understood the value of things. Owing to the success
of the outing, Chanel took another 22 NTP students to
the Vivocity outlet of Giant for the same activity.
The YWCA is able to provide the Meals-on-Wheels
for Disabled service to persons with physical or mental
disabilities. Working closely with hospitals and their
medical social workers, the Association saw an increase
of disabled beneficiaries from under 10 to over 20. They
have been regularly included in our Meals-on-Wheels
for Elderly outings and the YWCA has arranged for
wheelchair transport so activities are accessible to all
who are interested.
The weekend distribution took place every third
Saturday of the month at four estates on a rotational
basis. These were Tampines, Toa Payoh, Commonwealth
and Boon Lay. Each estate had an average of 70
beneficiaries. The beneficiaries received basic food
provisions such as rice, canned food, instant noodles,
Milo, cooking oil, biscuits, washing powder and toilet
rolls. Various corporate volunteers have participated
in this weekend packing and distribution and have
expressed interest for future participation in 2014.
Corporate volunteers include Cold Storage Singapore
(1983) Pte Ltd, iqDynamics Pte Ltd and Avnet Asia Pte
Ltd. We also have a group of passionate individuals
who enthusiastically participate in this programme
every month. The Association would like to thank them
for their unwavering dedication.
CHILDREN
The Meals-on-Wheels for Children (MOWC)
programme was launched in 2006 to distribute free
nutritious dinners every weekday to children aged
between five and 12 from low-income families in the
Outram vicinity. The programme came in response to
an article featured in The Straits Times about children
in Singapore who do not have enough to eat having
to go to bed early to keep their hunger pangs at bay.
Our outreach to the primary schools began when
Chanel Pte Ltd approached us to do a corporate
social responsibility (CSR) project to bring children
from low-income families out for grocery shopping.
The YWCA engaged New Town Primary and Telok
Kurau Primary to select students under the Financial
Assistance Sceheme to participate as it was happening
during school hours. 20 students from TKP partnered
Chanel staff to the Giant hypermart in Tampines on 9
April 2013 and were given a budget of $100 to buy
groceries for their families. They were also treated to a
Macdonald’s Happy Meal lunch and balloon sculpting.
Sustenance for Families
T he Sustenance for Families programme was launched
in 2010 to ease some of the financial burdens faced by
low-income families. The target of 1000 beneficiaries
has been met in 2013 and the numbers are consistently
increasing every month. The Association partners
with charitable organisation Realm of Tranquility, for
both the weekday and weekend monthly food ration
distributions.
DISABLED
In 2013, the number of children increased from around
100 to over 200 with two school partners, New Town
Primary (NTP) and Telok Kurau Primary (TKP), and
Thye Hua Kwan FSC @ Macpherson joining the
programme. This is in line with plans to expand the
service.
PROGRAMMES
NTP and TKP went on to pioneer the MOWC school
programme where children could collect their free meal
from the school before going home every weekday
except public and school holidays, giving them an
incentive to attend school and eliminating the dilemma
some faced of using their limited pocket money for
transport or food. Meals were also provided for their
approved siblings and/or grandparents. The meals
began in both schools in Term 3, July 2013 with 58
packets distributed at NTP and 54 packets distributed
at TKP.
The weekday distribution programme took place
every first Friday of the month. The beneficiaries
under this programme included the list from Realm
of Tranquility as well as referrals from various Family
Service Centres (FSCs) across Singapore. A unique
feature of this programme is that the rations are
customised according to the needs of the families
such as baby milk powder, baby diapers, Anlene milk
powder and adult diapers. In the application forms,
we included a list of milk powders and diaper sizes for
the beneficiaries to choose from. There are 3 choices of
milk powders under each age group and the diapers
sizes for both adults and babies ranged from S to XXL.
This programme was strongly supported by Dell
and United Parcel Service (UPS). Dell sent a team of
volunteers every first Friday of the month to help with
the packing of dry rations for our beneficiaries. Once
packed, we had teams of corporate volunteers to
help deliver the rations to our beneficiaries islandwide.
Corporate volunteers who were involved in the
deliveries include Kohler Singapore Pte Ltd, UTC
Aerospace Systems (UTAS), Dell, and UPS. Besides
corporate volunteers, various individual volunteers
have contributed their time and effort to help with
the deliveries as well. Some have even gone the extra
mile, helping out with additional undelivered rations
and even contributing food items like chocolate and
butter cookies during the Christmas season.
We also have a monthly bulk Sustenance programme.
where we provide rations for groups of beneficiaries
under their Family Service Centre (FSC) or Eldercare
Centre. There are two sets of ration options for them
to choose from: Option 1 is a set of cooking-related
rations which includes cooking oil, rice, instant noodles,
etc. Option 2 is for beneficiaries who are unable to
cook and includes biscuits, instant porridge, Nestum,
etc.There are a total of nine items per Option. We
have reached out to various centres islandwide for
this programme. They are SilverACE @ Whampoa,

Telok Blangah, SilverACE @ Henderson, SilverACE

The Sustenance for Families programme has since
benefitted over 1200 families. The cost of providing
these rations is approximately $32,000 per month.
The Association would like to extend its appreciation
to all the volunteers and sponsors who have supported
the programme in the past year. With your continued
support, we are able to positively impact the community
through our Sustenance for Families programme.
PROGRAMMES
Bursary Scheme
In 2013, the YWCA Bursary Scheme was offered to
all children under the Meals-on-Wheels programme,
including those in the school and centre deliveries.
Parents were invited to submit an application form for
their children aged between five to 12 with their midand final-year results. Response was overwhelming.
The Distinction Bursary was awarded to children who
received two Grade B’s or Band 2’s in the final-year
exam and 23 recipients each took back $100 worth
of Popular vouchers and $50 cash. The Merit Bursary
was awarded to those who showed improvement in
one grade in one major subject from the mid- to finalyear exam, with 12 recipients taking home $70 worth
of Popular vouchers and $30 cash.
Presented at the same platform as the Bursary Scheme
during the Kids’ Club Christmas Party, the Kids’ Club
Awards were bestowed upon eight children for
demonstrating the YWCA’s five core values of Service,
Compassion, Commitment, Respect and Teamwork.
They each received $30 worth of Popular vouchers
for showing these values in action.

Kids’ Club
The YWCA Kids’ Club seeks to offer a more holistic
approach to help children under the Meals-on-Wheels
programme. It aims to provide social, emotional, moral
and academic support to disadvantaged children aged
between five to 12 years through a free enrichment
programme of workshops and outings. By creating a
rewarding and conducive environment for them to
develop their character and self-worth, children can
discover their unique talents and potential.
The Kids’ Club runs every 2nd and 4th Saturday
from 10am to 12.30pm at the YWCA Outram with
transport provided. Special programmes are also
organised every long school holiday for the enjoyment
of both children and volunteers.

The YWCA saw the number of children who attended
the Kids’ Club at least once in 2013 rise to over 130 as
it moved from predominantly tuition- to enrichmentbased programmes. More than 25 of these children
who joined the programme were not MOWC
beneficiaries, but had been brought into the Kids’ Club
by their beneficiary friends and word of mouth.
Through the over 50 sessions held in the year, staff,
volunteers and corporate partners alike worked
together to impart a variety of interesting and engaging
activities to benefit the children. The YWCA sincerely
thanks all those who have put in their effort to serve
the children by love and for representing the YWCA
core values by example.

PROGRAMMES
Workz-on-Wheels
The purpose of the Workz-on-Wheels (WoW)
programme is to impart useful life skills to at-risk
children and youth, aged between seven to 17 in
various homes and schools in Singapore. For 2013,
the YWCA exceeded our goal to include five partners
in order to reach more children and youths and help
them discover their talents and abilities.
Jewellery Making. The girls’ creations then went on
to sell during their Open House. From the WoW
workshops that we have provided, the girls have been
observed to not only be able to learn a skill, but have
the opportunity to explore their interests and ambitions
during this period, thus boosting their self esteem.
A collaboration with Prison Fellowship Singapore
started on 20 April 2013, heralding regular workshop
slots which ran on Saturdays mornings every two
weeks. The curriculum started with a Self Esteem
workshop to address the low self esteem suffered by
many of the children as a result of their disadvantaged
family backgrounds and incidence of having one or
both parents currently or previously incarcerated.
After that, we conducted a Friendship workshop for
the children as they lacked social and communication
skills, not knowing how to make and keep friends.
During the long school holidays, the children also came
over to our Youth Centre to learn baking and cooking.
Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home was the
first home to partner with the YWCA when the
programme was conceived in 2012. We conducted
various Art and Craft workshops for their children on
a bi-weekly basis. The YWCA welcomed individual
volunteers interested to facilitate workshops to share
their own talents such as sewing, crocheting, teaching
etiquette, and creative arts and craft projects like
making Friendship Bands, DIY Photo Frames, Toilet
Paper Roll Art, etc. Besides facilitators, different groups
of student volunteers from Outward Bound Singapore
(OBS), Singapore Management University (SMU)
and Innova Junior College also came in to befriend the
children at each session, conduct a reading programme
and play mini games with the children.
We began engaging AG Home in January 2013 and
the programme kicked off with a Honey Cornflakes
and Butter Cookies Baking workshop which was very
well-received by the home’s girls. Besides teaching the
girls cooking and baking, our Board Members spared
time to go to the Home every Monday to teach
The Canossaville Children’s Home became our next
WoW partner for a sewing workshop on 20 June
2013. A group of OBS Alumni came to befriend and
assist the children in completing their sewing project.
The girls had fun learning sewing and were looking
forward to meet us and the volunteers at the next long
school break. Sunbeam Place, under the umbrella of the Singapore
Children’s Society, collaborated with the YWCA in
2013 on for a Self Esteem workshop on 28 June; Baking
workshop on 12 September; Self-Care workshop on 9
November and Friendship workshop on 12 December.
Due to the positive feedback received on the sessions
from the Home and children, we will be conducting
more regular workshops with them in 2014.
Ling Wiesser to conduct a series of Healthy Cooking
workshops for the children as well to teach them
independence. At the end of her workshops, the
children learnt basic cooking skills and of the importance
of eating healthily as well. Children got to taste foods
that they personally prepared at the end of each
session, motivating them to eat vegetables they had
cooked themselves. The school has given feedback to
us that the children have a better understanding of
healthy living and were more aware of their personal
hygiene practices.
New Town Primary School is the first school we
engaged for the WoW programme. The school has
organised different meaningful activities for its group
of latch-key kids, who are lonely and lack parental
supervision after school. We came in as one of the
partners to conduct life skills workshops for the
children on Wednesday afternoons on a bi-weekly
basis. For a start, a workshop on managing emotions
was conducted for the children as they needed a place
to be heard and to express their feelings. The YWCA
was very honoured to have the local Ambassador
of the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, Ms Way

School Holiday Programmes
Kwa, Vanilla Cookies and Chocolate Fudge Brownies.
It also included an arts and craft session where youths
could exercise their creativity to paint clay models.
It was activities and events galore at the Youth Centre
during the long school holidays. From creating their
very own animated programmes utilising the Scratch
software developed by the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, to an intimate sewing workshop to
create a small bag and purse, to designing their own
notebooks, and even Modern Batik Painting, the Youth
Centre was abuzz with excited children and youths
alike in June. The Pizza Making workshop on 18 June
drew the highest attendance, with 21 children and
youths turning up to get their hands dirty rolling up
their personal pizzas. Other food-themed workshops
also enjoyed good response such as Cookies Baking
and Mochi Making.
To mark the end of the school holidays, a MidAutumn Festival celebration was held. Workshops ran
throughout the day, starting with Mooncake Making.
The youths made both traditional and snow-skin
mooncakes with the choice of red bean or lotus paste as
their mooncake filling. After making their mooncakes,
they embarked on creating their own lanterns for the
celebration in the evening.
Youth Centre
On 1 March 2013, the YWCA Youth Centre opened
as a “home away from home” sanctuary for youths
between 13 to 18 years old living within the Outram
vicinity to hang out, make new friends and acquire
new skills. There is also a special relationship between
the YWCA and good food as seen in the major food
theme running through the Youth Centre workshops.
WORKSHOPS
Since January 2013, we have been conducting a series
of culinary workshops with the AG Home girls every
Tuesday afternoon. On 19 June, eight girls took up the
challenge to prepare a main course and appetiser or
dessert for their family members and YWCA Board
members at our Junior Masterchef event.
The girls put in their best effort to prepare and present
their dishes, with many choosing ones they felt most
comfortable preparing such as baked pasta and
cookies. But some ventured into new territory with
chrysanthemum konnyaku jelly and honeydew sago
drinks to name a few.
Most evident was how far the girls have come to learn
and grow with us. Their newfound maturity could be
seen in the skillful way they mastered their own kitchen
counters even when time was running short. The girls
further had a great bonding session with their family
members over their home-cooked meals and received
awards and certificates from the Board members who
formed the judging panel.
Other than culinary workshops, we were privileged to
have volunteers Dorina and Ruth, to facilitate a series of
sewing workshops for the girls as well. The two ladies
dedicated every Tuesday afternoon in the month of
May to impart sewing skills to the girls, introducing
them to the mechanism of the sewing machine and
helping them practice and construct a pouch and
pillow, complete with pillowcase.
When the sun set, a barbecue pit was set up to grill
everyone’s dinner and some of the parents came to
join in the fun. After dinner, they lit up the YWCA
parking lot at Outram with their shining lanterns.
The YWCA was also pleased to welcome Ms Way
Ling Wiesser, volunteer ambassador from famed chef
Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation to run the inaugural
Food Revolution Day in Singapore. On 17 May, Way
and her friend Nathalie, came to facilitate a healthy
cooking workshop for seven of our youths. The youths
were taught two healthy kinds of pasta to educate
them about food, empower them with the skills and
knowledge to cook, and to inspire them to embrace
their right to better food.
The youths who attended at least five sessions in the
June holidays were rewarded with an outing to the
Youthphoria festival at the Singapore Discovery Centre
on 29 June. It was a day of excitement and fun where
the youths met stars from ‘Ah Boys to Men’, played
carnival games and watched ‘Monsters University’ on
a massive 3D screen.
In September, the holiday programme started off with
a series of culinary workshops such as Stuffed Tau Pok
The year-end holiday programmes carried on the
tradition of culinary workshops owing to its popularity
and the youths had the change to hone their baking
and cooking skills again with Cookie Decoration and
other workshops.
A Youth Centre Facebook page was set up to share
the great things that are happening and for the youths
to share with their friends.

Girls' Hostel
Dr Tan has also been conducting these talks with
MediaCorp, where tickets sell out swiftly. The YWCA
is very privileged to be able to invite Dr Tan each year
to provide our members with his insights on the world
of investment.
The YWCA Girls’ Hostel project commenced in 2013.
It was set up in mind for young ladies between 18 to
25 years old to have a safe place for them to start
afresh. This hostel serves as an option for young ladies
who do not have a conducive home to return to after
graduating from children’s and girls’ homes. Our hope
is for these young ladies to practise independence and
integrate themselves into society as they transit into
adulthood. The YWCA is able to house up to 24
residents through referrals from such homes.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Four rooms on the third floor of YWCA Outram
were refurnished into dormitory-style accommodation.
All rooms were repainted in pastel colours to provide
a comforting homely atmosphere and the windows
were treated with privacy film. The bathrooms were
also renovated and completely retiled.
Membership
Chinese New Year Shopping
The pioneering event saw huge success with 40
participants registering for it. Participants were not only
ferried around in a chartered bus to factory outlets
in Woodlands Terrace, but places like Seng Hua
Foodstuffs and Asia Myriad as well. Our members
who joined were able to purchase goods at discounted
prices for Chinese New Year. As a value-added service,
a sumptuous lunch was provided at Guilin Restaurant.
The Annual General Meeting of the YWCA was held
on 25 April 2013 and the new Board was instituted
with Ms Tan Kee Leng as the President, and Ms Janet
Tan and Mrs Dancy Thong as Vice Presidents.
Senior Citizens’ Lunch
Despite a quiet start this year, YWCA Membership
and Programmes saw a huge growth of approximately
500 new members in 2013. Therefore, a series of new
events and activities to engage members was laid out.
As festive shopping sprees increase in popularity,
the YWCA introduced its first Chinese New Year
Shopping Trip for members on 2 February 2013.

Investment Talk
The 2013 Investment Talk held on 5 March drew
over 60 participants, having grown in scale since its
inception in 2011. With guest speaker Dr Tan Kee
Wee and his bountiful knowledge of Economics and
Funds Management, this annual event has been both
enriching and informative for new and experienced
investors alike.
On 24 October 2013, the YWCA held its Senior
Citizen’s Lunch at the Sophia Cooke Ballroom at the
Fort Canning Lodge. The staff put together a Peranakan
lunch this year to celebrate, honour, acknowledge and
thank a total of 97 senior citizens for their hard work,
dedication and commitment to contributing to their
families, the YWCA and our society through the years.
There was open mic karaoke available for seniors to
belt out much-loved song hits and performances by
some of the staff themselves at this enjoyable luncheon
with old friends and new.
The YWCA was mentioned in The Straits Times Life!
section on 25 October 2013 in the article, “What a
Workout!” The article featured different kinds of
water-based workouts such as Aqua Aerobics, which
the YWCA offers weekly classes for. Our Aqua
Aerobics classes have expanded and run on weekday
mornings and evenings to cater to different schedules.
Other popular water-based workouts Aqua Spin and
Aqua Zumba classes will also be introduced in 2014.
GOLDEN Y
In 1995, a pilot programme, Golden Y Fellowship for
senior members was started to meet the needs of ladies
above age 60. They meet regularly for activities on
Monday mornings from 11am to 2pm at the YWCA
Outram. The ladies pay a nominal fee and enjoy the
weekly fellowship programme which includes praise
and worship, prayer and sharing, singalong sessions of
songs of yesteryears, board games and lunch. Special
programmes and outings are also planned for the
ladies on festive occasions.
For the year 2013, the Golden Y organised the
following activities:
• “Christmas After Glow” in January
• Chinese New Year celebration in February
• Golden Y Anniversary in March
• Mother’s Day celebration in May
• National Day luncheon in August
2013 also saw the start of two new initiatives in the
Golden Y. Periodically, they hold a small potluck
luncheon where the ladies can showcase their culinary
skills. They have also set up a buddy system where the
ladies are grouped based on proximity of their homes
so that they can take care and look out for each other.
On top of their own activities, the Golden Y actively
supports YWCA events such as attending the Annual
General Meeting, World Week of Prayer, participating
in the Christmas Fair, performing at the Senior Citizen’s
Lunch on the ukulele, and donating and helping in
Flag Day.
Christian Growth
Bible Study
The YWCA recognises the importance of having
regular bible study to help us in our growth as
Christians. As such, a ladies’ bible study class is held
once a fortnight, on every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of
the month at 5.30pm at the YWCA Outram.
World YWCA/YMCA Week of
Prayer & World Fellowship
The YWCA/YMCA/MYMCA World Week of
Prayer was held from 11 to 15 November 2013.
The theme for this year was “Be The Change”,
drawing from the key Bible verse, “Do not conform
to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
Three lunch fellowships were held on 11, 12, and 13
November, hosted by the YMCA, MYMCA and
YWCA respectively. The YWCA fellowship had
a turnout of 90 participants consisting of staff from
all three associations and members of the public.
Reverend Ivan Lee led the group in worship and was
followed by Reverend Edwin Lam, Senior Pastor of
Calvary Baptist Church who shared a message entitled
“Delighting in the Presence of the Almighty”.
In line with the theme to “Be The Change”, our
beneficiary for the love offering was HighPoint
Community Services Association, an association which
helps rebuild broken lives of ex-offenders.
The YWCA organises a lunchtime fellowship programme known as Joy Talk on every last Monday of the
month at Fort Canning Lodge. The programme kicks off with a lunch fellowship followed by worship and the
ministering of the word of God. Each month, pastors or pastoral staff from different churches are invited to
speak at Joy Talk sessions. Through listening to God’s word, the attendees are encouraged to deepen their faith
and strength in their walk with God. We give thanks for the steady attendance of 30 at Joy Talk each month.

The Christmas Joy Talk was held on Monday, 9
December 2013 at the Fort Canning Lodge, Pool
Terrace Room. It marked the end of the Joy Talk series
for 2013 and the programme resumed in February
2014. Over 90 people attended the event including
regular Joy Talk participants, ladies from the Golden Y
Circle, staff, friends and members of the YWCA.
Attendees were treated to a scrumptious Christmas
lunch with Christmas Roast, Christmas Log Cake
and many luncheon delights. Reverend Ivan Lee
led the worship once again and Reverend Edwin
Lam delivered the Christmas message aptly named

YWCA SAFETY ALERT APP
The YWCA Safety Alert is a mobile phone
application, which is designed to enhance the safety
of young women anytime and anywhere. The mobile
application is available for both iPhone and Andriod
phones and can be downloaded free on the Apple
App Store as well as Google Play worldwide. The total
number of downloads have reached 13,891 since the
launch of the app in July 2012.

VISIT TO YWCA KUALA LUMPUR
YWCA’s community services and programmes could not operate successfully without our pool of dedicated
volunteers and donors. We are very grateful to have our YWCA Board and Committee Members who commit
their invaluable time to support the running of the YWCA. We are also extremely blessed to have the backing
of volunteers and donors ranging from corporates, church groups, individuals and even students who approach
us to volunteer and fundraise for our causes. They give selflessly of their time, efforts and money to help us out
through weekdays and weekends, come rain, shine or sometimes haze.
On 31 March 2013, Ms Mavis Tsoi from the YWCA
Board made a special trip to Kuala Lumpur (KL) to
join the YWCA Kuala Lumpur Centenary Celebrations
High Tea Event. It was a great opportunity to learn
more about the programmes and services that the
YWCA Kuala Lumpur offers as well as to foster closer
ties with our overseas Sister Associations.
Ms Tsoi accepted a copy of the commemoration book
on YWCA Kuala Lumpur history entitled “Our Utmost
for the Highest” on behalf of the YWCA Singapore.
She also had the chance to meet up with President of
YWCA (KL) Ramani, Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan, as
well as Board members of the YWCA KL and Bahan
at this event.
Asian Girl Campaign
In early October, the YWCA received an invitation
from a volunteer to collaborate with The Garden
of Hope (GOH) Foundation in Taiwan to organise
the Asian Girl Campaign in Singapore. According
to the GOH Foundation, the Asian Girl Campaign
is a region-wide movement to promote the United
Nations’ International Day of the Girl Child around
Asia, which puts forth that we can empower the world
through empowering girls. We joined in as one of the
campaign partners to raise awareness of the problems
faced by Asian girls and also to empower them to
overcome such problems.
The staff of YWCA showed our support for the
International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October 2013
by wearing the campaign scarves sent to us by GOH
and making the butterfly hand gesture symbolic of
the campaign. The gesture represents the changes
butterflies go through in their lives to parallel the
journey abused girls take during their recovery or the
positive transformation of other girls in a society. This
also represents the girl who regains her rights and
soars in the air like a butterfly. In conjunction with our support of the campaign,
YWCA conducted a Self-Care workshop for girls at
the Sunbeam Place children’s home. The girls were
taught that they have the right to say “No” when they
feel unsafe or threatened as young women. They were
given scenarios to analyse how to protect themselves
from potential abuse.
We look forward to more collaborations with the
GOH Foundation and others in the upcoming year so
as to advance the development of women and girls
in body, mind and spirit. We would like to thank the
GOH Foundation for inviting us to be the campaign
partner representing Singapore.
