The Nursery and Landscaping team competed
at the state contest in March at the University
of Florida Mid-Research Center in Apopka,
Florida. The contest consisted of plant, pest,
and tool identification, interpreting a
landscape plan, customer assistance, and
identifying and controlling plant disorders.
Ms. Norman said, “It is a pleasure coaching
this group of awesome girls to represent our
FFA chapter.” The team members, who placed
3rd out of 12 teams, are Abby Harvey, Emily
Hill, Samantha Ortiz, and Kirsten Starling
(pictured at left).
Amber Reneau and Kiya Hunter competed in
March in the District Ornamental Horitculture
demonstrations that were held in Middleburg.
This contest was designed to simulate careful
planning, thorough knowledge and the ability
to explain by work and action the “how and
why” of various horticulture practices. These
members prepared and presented a 7-10
minute demonstration in their respective
categories.

Health Moment from Nurse Cheryl Social Studies Fundraiser
Spring is in the air with warmer weather
and baseball/softball season!!! More time
is spent outside which also means more
time spent in the sun. Sunlight can be
very enjoyable, but too much of it can be
dangerous. As many of you may have already
experienced, over-exposure to sunlight can result in a
painful sunburn. Sunburns during childhood will
increase your risk of skin cancer as an adult.
Therefore, children/teenagers need to make sure they
are protected from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
So, while you are outside having fun in the sun, don’t
forget to:
Always use sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and
reapply every 90 minutes.
 Wear sunglasses with UV ray protection.
 Wear a wide brim hat.
 Wear clothes to protect shoulders, arms, and legs.
