August 14, 2015 HOSPITELL 3 Quality care is never very far away Dear Colleagues, Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours open house at our new Ledyard Backus Family Health Center. Those in attendance were quite impressed — not just with the facility, but with our staff. This week, our partner, United Community and Family Services, celebrated National Health Center Week, which recognizes community health centers, with an eye-catching display on the Norwichtown green. 2 They also received their long-awaited Federally 11 13 Qualified Health Center status. This got me thinking about how far health centers 8 have come over the years. Our staff is truly doing ex7 10 cellent work at all of our health centers in the East 1 6 Region, making us leaders in this outpatient movement. On a national note, community health centers 5 3 4 serve approximately 24 million people, or one in 14 Americans, and the numbers are even higher if you include hospital-affiliated entities. They have come a 12 9 long way since community health centers were first conceived in a pilot project during President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty” — every day health centers are providing a 1. Six weeks into the program, 65 families have already received prescriptions for fruits and vegetables to be redeemed at local farmers markets. And for the first time in the five-year history of the program, several local pediatricians have joined primary care providers in the effort. Under the program, providers for children who are overweight or at risk of being overweight write prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables to be redeemed at the Norwich and Voluntown Farmers Market. At the market, families bring the scripts to the Backus Care Van and Agata Doorn, left, along with members of her receive $20 worth of family and some friends, looks over the fruit vouchers for fresh and vegetable selections at the Norwich Farmers fruits, vegetables, Market Wednesday. Agata and her family have farm fresh eggs, or been participating in the Backus Rx for Health whole grain bread. A Program this summer. registered dietitian or a healthy eating advocate is present to provide nutritional counseling to both children and their parents. A family can visit the market up to five times, receiving $20 worth of vouchers each visit. “Having pediatricians Dr. Richard Lavoie, Dr. Ravi Prakash, Dr. Larry Galan and the Norwich Pediatric Group this year has helped make this program even stronger. It gives us the ability to reach even more families, provide recipes and educate them about the importance of healthy eating habits,” said Community Health Nurse Alice Facente, RN. Rx for Health scripts can be redeemed at the Downtown Norwich Farmers Market every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. though Oct. 28.
