Tax Free Retirement Workshop
Many Americans assume that their taxes in retirement will stay the same or go down,
unfortunately for most this may not be the case. Historical federal tax rates have been as high as
91% in the 50’s, 70% in the 70’s and 50% in the 80’s. Upon retirement social security may be
taxable as high as 85% to the recipient and required minimum distributions from retirement
accounts also can create substantial taxable income. Include pensions, rental property income,

GoodLife Fitness program unveiled at Windham
The final piece of the Hartford
HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging
is now in place.
The GoodLife Fitness program,
which offers one-on-one individualized exercise for older adults, opened
on Aug. 8. GoodLife Fitness is distinctive in that it is led by an exercise
professional experienced in working
with the older population.
GoodLife Fitness is one component
of the Hartford
HealthCare Center
for Healthy Aging
at Windham Hospital. The center
also includes the Natchaug Hospital
Adult Program serving men and women ages 55 and older struggling with
mental illness or substance abuse and
a resource coordinator who connects
patients to healthcare services and
other local resources for seniors.
In the senior-friendly center,
members and the exercise professionals develop individualized goals
to better the quality of life. Benefits
may include improved muscular
strength and stamina, better balance,
reduction in the risk of falls and
injuries, support of cardiovascular
health, and building of self-esteem
and self-satisfaction. The program
can also support individuals who
need pre- and post-rehabilitation.
Kelli Barbone, ATC/LAT, certified
athletic trainer, works closely with
clients to help them become more
confident in their daily activities and
maintain or improve their current
health status through functional
exercises. She has been a member of
the Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network since October 2014. Barbone, who graduated with a Bachelor

Backus welcomes newest therapy dog
Mugsly, a four year old rescue pooch, is the newest member of the Backus pet therapy team.
Mugsly, like all other dogs on the therapy team,
went through a rigorous screening and onboarding process to make sure he was the perfect fit
to safely bring some happiness to Backus patients. He
received his Backus badge on
Aug. 11.
Owner Lynn Snyder says
Mugsly was in rough shape when he was rescued
from the side of a Tennessee highway four years
ago — losing a leg because of neglect.
“I just hope patients can relax and smile when
they see him. He seems to have that effect on
everybody. He really enjoys being around people,”
said Snyder.

The power of Pokémon
Persuasive smartphone
app underscores the
allure of video games
Pokémon Go, the breakout smartphone game downloaded more than
75 million times in a matter of weeks,
has been praised as a charming
health fad with its catch-me-if-youcan format. But an expert on videogame addiction cautions parents that
too much Pokémon Go is potentially
harmful to their children.
“Video games can cause a similar
reaction in the pleasure centers of the
brain as addictive drugs,” says Dr. Paul
Weigle, a child and adolescent psychiatrist who is also associate medical
director at Natchaug Hospital, “and
addiction to game play causes similar
long-term deficit in the brain’s reward
system as those of drug addicts.”
Pokémon Go, a free game (iOS and
Android devices), features a familiar
Nintendo character concocted more
than 25 years ago by a Japanese videogame designer with a childhood love
of collecting insects.
Pokémon Go takes the game outside, with players attempting to catch
Pokémon, or pocket monsters, in the
real world. Niantic Labs, the game’s
maker and spinoff of Google parent
company Alphabet, uses augmented
reality to make Pokémon trackable
(and visible) through a smartphone’s
GPS and back-facing camera.
Players have pursued Pokémon
with such vigor that some have
apparently lost their bearings and,
perhaps, even their senses. The U.S.
Holocaust Museum in Washington
has already told Pokémon Go fans to
refrain from playing while visiting the
somber memorial.
“Pokémon Go motivates kids to go
outside and explore the world,” says
Weigle, “but this must be supervised
as it comes with significant risks like
distraction around traffic and ‘lures’
by other players.”

concerned you. Since then, you notice that you have been left out of
several important departmental meetings and you feel as though your
supervisor is constantly giving you the least desirable work assignments. You believe that this is because
your expressed your concerns. Could
this be retaliation?
