WHO WE ARE
Founded in 2002, the South East European Film Festival pioneered
the concept of regional, cross-border programming with issuedriven films that tell a larger story about South East Europe, where
borders of all kinds are fluid and porous just as often as poisonous.
By presenting multiple points of view from this troubled region, the
festival unlocks delicate doors into human existence, highlighting
concerns of our time that resonate with American audiences.
Through year-round film screenings, art picnics, a business
conference, and other events, collaboration with diplomatic/cultural/
arts/media partners and youth volunteers in Los Angeles and other
U.S. cities, SEE FEST also serves as a resource for educators, young
scholars, youth volunteers and the media.

Writer/Director: Dragomir Sholev
Producer: Rossitsa Valkanova
Dragomir Sholev
A boy on the verge of adolescence in the post-communist no man’s land quietly
rips through the last vestiges of his parents’ old world in this impressively directed
debut feature from newcomer writer-director
Dragomir Sholev. With excellent cast (Cvetan
Daskalov, Yanina Kasheva, Kaloyan Siriiski,
Irena Hristoskova, Silvia Gerina) and beautifully
photographed by Krum Rodriguez, the film was
co-written by Romanian Razvan Radulescu (“The
Death of Mr. Lazarescu”, “Paper Will Be Blue”,
“Tuesday after Christmas” among others).
DAD (Oča) | 8:45
Slovenia, 2010, feature; 70 min, North American Premiere
Writer/Director: Vlado Škafar
Producer: Frenk Celarc
Vlado Škafar
A young boy whose parents are divorced finally gets to spend some time with his dad.
On a beautiful summer day the two of them go fishing, surrounded by unspoiled nature,
as if they were alone in the world. As emotions slowly surface, the distant world around
them eventually steps in... Venice Critics’
Week programmers wrote that Dad was “a
film of suggestive images, evocative sounds,
lyrical connections and secret intermittences
of the heart...” and the film’s spirituality “is
worthy of the masterpieces by Tarkovsky
and Sokurov.” Following the documentary
“Letter to a Child,” this is director Škafar’s
feature debut. He is currently working on
“Mom,” the last installment of the trilogy.

Brooding twenty-three-year-old Dimitris (Sotiris Pastras, a twotime Olympics participant) is undergoing punishing training for the
national swimming team. He can also hold his breath underwater
longer than others, and finds solace when his body and mind are in
a state of suspension. But after achieving success in the European
championships the swimmer feels emptier than ever, and keeps
spending more and
more time alone
in the pool while
memories of his one
real-life relationship
flood his mind.

mother’s income by selling ayran, the salty yogurt drink, to weary winter travelers. One
of Turkey’s most gifted still photographers, first-time director Selim Günes infuses his
film with a visual artistry befitting the delicate drama of a boy struggling to survive a
cold winter’s day, one hour at a time.

KAPITALISM, Our Improved Formula | 1:00 pm
(Kapitalism -- Reteta Noastra Secreta)
Romania/France/Belgium 2010, documentary, 80 min
North American Premiere
Writer/Director: Alexandru Solomon
Producers: Ada Solomon, Pascaline Geoffroy, Cedric Bonin
Alexandru Solomon
Renowned filmmaker Alexandru Solomon invites Ceausescu, former dictator of
Communist Romania, to revisit his country 20 years after he had been executed on
Christmas Day of the revolutionary 1989. The dictator haunts
present-day capitalist society, commonly referred to as the
‘Wild East’ and still deeply rooted in its communist past.
Capitalism with a K – an Eastern European cocktail of power
and money – is the ‘Wild East’s twin of Michael Moore’s
“Capitalism: A Love Story.”
MAY IT FILL YOUR SOUL | 2:30 pm
USA, 2011, documentary, 60 min; World Premiere
Writer/Director/Producer: Timothy Rice
Timothy
Rice
This is the story of the Varimezov
family of brilliant Bulgarian
traditional musicians. It begins at
the end of the Ottoman Empire
and traces the family’s musical
legacy in parallel with the political
history of Bulgaria from 1878
to the present. After the fall of
communism in 1989, Ivan and his
wife Tzvetanka brought the soulful
tradition of song and dance first to
America and then the world.

ME, MY GYPSY FAMILY AND WOODY ALLEN | 4:00 pm
(Io, la mia famiglia Rom e Woody Allen)
Italy, 2009, documentary, 50 min; Los Angeles Premiere
Writer/Director: Laura Halilović
Producer: Davide Tosco
Award-winning “Me, My Gypsy Family & Woody Allen” is
the story of the Halilović family who came to Italy from
Bosnia Herzegovina at the end of the ‘60s, and lived in
caravans until 1996. It is an intimate portrayal of the end of a
nomadic lifestyle. Told in the first person with irony and wit,
Laura documents the process of accepting her origins while
rejecting the expectations of family to realize her dream of
becoming a film director.
Laura Halilović

WHITE BUTTON (Bijelo dugme) | 5:00 pm
Serbia, 2010, documentary, 90 min
West Coast Premiere
Director/Producer: Igor Stoimenov
Igor Stoimenov
Legendary rock band “Bijelo dugme” (‘white button’) from
Sarajevo took Yugoslavia by storm in the early 1970s and
ruled the charts for 15 years. Its founder, Goran Bregović,
has since become a global world music phenomenon.
Featuring rare archival footage of the music scene in
Yugoslavia in the late 1960s and early 70s, the film’s timeline
closely mirrors the transformation of Yugoslavia from the
poster country for Eastern bloc neighbors to a place on the
brink of disintegration in 1989.

Late one night Mare decides to leave her
Dalibor
abusive husband and, with their 7 year-old

Marija Škaričić’s award winning performance brings to

desperately presents to her son as a game. When they find
themselves at Christmas time without money, friends, or
even compassion, help comes in the unlikeliest of places.

The brainchild of Serbian film critic and producer Nenad Dukić, the film is a high-concept
project with five stories exploring the themes of motherhood and pregnancy, directed by
women filmmakers from five former Yugoslav republics.
“Croatian Story” follows an anguished painter who must decide whether or not to keep one
of her unborn twins, diagnosed with Down syndrome. “Serbian Story” finds an expectant
mother in the same emergency room with a charming killer, while “Bosnia-Herzegovina
Story” centers on a financially strapped Sarajevo family
whose son’s lover is pregnant. “Macedonian Story” unfolds
in a clinic where a drug addict struggles to keep her baby,
and “Slovenian Story” ends the omnibus on a humorous note
with a nun who finds her own way to immaculate conception.

International Committee, with Ivy Road Entertainment.

until the 1999 war changes his mind. Once a proud and respected teacher in Kosovo, he
is now tormented by being an outsider in
this new country. Having lost the physical
connection with his land and culture, Rasim
is unable to stop his life from unraveling.

Some two thousand Greek and Turkish Cypriots went missing during the intercommunal conflicts of the 1960s and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Seven
relatives of the missing recall their harrowing stories: from their last moments together
with their loved ones
until recent exhumations,
which began to shed
light on their possible fate.
As they struggle to come to
terms with what happened
then and what the future
may hold, their stories reveal
how these events shaped not
only their lives but also their
divided country.
MEDAL OF HONOR (Medalia de onoare) | 7:00 pm
Romania/Germany, 2009, feature, 104 min; L.A. Premiere
Director: Calin Peter Netzer

One of the most lyrical films to come
along from the fertile Romanian New
Wave, “Medal of Honor” introduces us
to an ordinary senior citizen, Ion I. Ion
who suddenly gets a medal of honor for
bravery shown in WWII, but which he
cannot recall… Deeply humanistic, with
well-calibrated humor, “Medal of Honor”
features a bravura performance by stage
actor Victor Rebengiuc and an excellent
supporting cast.
This screening is made possible with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, and Stefania Magidson.

from Serbian and Croatian villages,

becoming the only link between the two

Ivan Faktor
I will never know what wasteland is. Is it something
deep inside, or is it everywhere else, outside of
us, something weighing heavily on the morning,
afternoon and evening’s sky; or something completely
different, something entirely else – that last thing we
no longer know why it still aches for the skies, while
lying that it wants only the wasteland?
