The Panther offense, not to be outdone, has posted the second-best scoring average in the nation with 41.8 points per contest. • UNI’s offensive and defensive units have been equally dominant through the team’s first five games. Out of 118 Division I FCS teams, UNI ranks in the top three for offense and defense. The Panthers’ offense ranks No. 3 in the nation for total offense, averaging 483 yards per game. On the other side of the ball, UNI is allowing only 211 yards per game, good enough for second in the nation. • UNI’s matchup with North Dakota State may come down to dominance in the running game. The Bison have the No. 2 rushing offense in the country, racking up 234.6 yards per contest on the ground. Senior running back Pat Paschall is the national leader with 150.8 yards rushing per game. The UNI defense, on the other hand, has been allowing a meager 65.6 yards rushing per game. Led by five starting seniors (Austin Howard, Nate Herrig, Austin Steichen, Jason Fiacco, and Jordan Limbaugh), UNI has only allowed one sack per game, the best rate in the MVFC. Not only are the men up front keeping the Panthers from moving backwards, they have also been a force in the ground game. UNI’s 226.6 yards rushing per contest is the fifth-best mark in all of FCS football. • UNI has a strong presence at the top of the Missouri Valley Football Conference statistical rankings. The Panthers are first in the Valley in total offense, scoring offense, passing offense, passing efficiency and sacks allowed. It’s the same story on defense where the Panthers are number one in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, passing defense and turnover margin. • UNI head coach Mark Farley is entering his ninth season at the helm of the Panther program. Farley has posted a mark of 78-29, which puts him in third place on the Panthers’ coaching victory. Farley trails Clyde Starbeck (95 wins) and Stan Sheriff (129 wins). PANTHER POINTS NORTH DAKOTA STATE BISON NDSU was picked to finish fourth in the MVFC preseason poll, but the Bison have started the year with a 1-4 overall mark and are 0-2 in league play. The Bison defeated Wagner, 59-28, but have suffered losses at Iowa State (34-17), at Sam Houston State (4845), at Southern Illinois (24-14) and at home to Illinois State (27-24). NDSU possesses the nation’s leading rusher in running back back Pat Paschall, who has run for 150.8 yards per game this season. As a team, the Bison rank No. 2 in the nation in rushing offense at 234.6 yards per game. SCOREBOARD SUPREMECY The numbers UNI has put on the scoreboard have been impressive. The Panther ‘D’ leads all Division I FCS teams in scoring defense. Opponents have averaged only 7.6 points per contest against UNI over the course of the season. The Panther offense, not to be outdone, has posted the second-best scoring average in the nation with 41.8 points per contest. UNI has allowed zero points in the second quarter through the teams’ first five games. DEADLY COMBINATION UNI’s offensive and defensive units have been equally dominant through the team’s first five games. UNI ranks as the fifth-best rushing defense among all FCS teams. COMMEND THE O-LINE The Panthers’ offensive line has been vital to the team’s success through five games. OORDT HITS PAYDIRT TWICE Junior tight end Schuylar Oordt caught two near-identical touchdown passes for UNI against Indiana State. Each one came from 30 yards out, as Oordt found a hole deep in the middle of the Sycamore secondary both times. Oordt is averaging 17.8 yards per catch on the season, with three of his eight receptions going for touchdowns. TOP OF THE VALLEY UNI has a strong presence at the top of the Missouri Valley Football Conference statistical rankings. The Panthers are first in the Valley in total offense, scoring offense, passing offense, passing efficiency and sacks allowed. It’s the same story on defense where the Panthers are number one in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, passing defense and turnover margin. AT HOME IN THE DOME UNI has won 19 of the last 21 games in the UNI-Dome, stretching back to the 2006 season. The Panthers have not lost a home conference game since Oct. 28, 2006, when the Panthers fell to Western Illinois, 24-13. The only two losses during the 21-game stretch came in the Division I FCS playoffs. UNI’s current streak stands at 16 straight regular season victories in the Dome. HEADING NORTH This week’s game will mark UNI’s first visit to the Fargodome. Completed in 1993, the Fargodome lists capacity at 18,700. UNI’s last visit to Fargo, N.D., came in 1982. The Bison won that matchup, 12-7, but the Panthers lead the all-time series 23-18. STRATHMAN BRINGS DOME CROWD TO THEIR FEET Junior running back Matt Strathman, who highlighted the Panthers’ ground attack against Indiana State, impressed UNI fans with his determined and powerful running style in the 62-7 win over the Sycamores. Strathman broke tackles, carried defenders and showed breakaway speed on his way to 133 yards on 16 carries. He added a 49-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to score his first points as a Panther. Strathman entered the game with 11 career carries for 80 career rushing yards. CONLEY GRABS PICK-6 Sophomore James Conley intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring in UNI’s 62-7 victory over Indiana State. Conley also tallied five tackles (1 solo) in the win. The interception was the first of Conley’s career. MARTIN GETTIN’ HIS KICKS Redshirt freshman place kicker Max Martin booted a pair of second-half field goals and two extra points in UNI’s 62-7 triumph over Indiana State. Martin’s 34-yard field goal gave UNI a 45-0 lead in the third quarter. Martin then added a 22-yarder in the fourth quarter to up the lead to 48-0. Martin kicked off six times and averaged 61.2 yards per kick. EFFICIENT GRACE Senior quarterback Pat Grace entered Saturday’s game against Indiana State ranked No. 2 in the nation in passing efficiency and he did nothing to diminish those numbers. Grace completed 7-of-9 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns while only playing in the game’s first 30 minutes against the Sycamores. Grace’s passing efficiency rating rose to 184.04 after the game - he began the game with a passing efficiency rating of 171.85. He trails only Jacksonville State quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, a transfer from LSU, who has an efficiency rating of 199.22. HERRING IS A TRIPLE THREAT Sophomore Jarred Herring has proven to be a triple threat this season as he has scored a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return touchdown. Herring scored on a three-yard touchdown run against Missouri State in the Panthers’ 35-7 victory over the Bears. Herring returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown in UNI’s 30-0 win over Saint Francis (9/19). The Burlington, Iowa, native has also caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Pat Grace in the 66-7 win over South Dakota (9/12). DP = TD Senior wide receiver D.P. Eyman caught a pair of touchdown passes in UNI’s 35-7 win over Missouri State (9/26). Eyman had touchdown receptions of 27 and 26 yards in the triumph over the Bears. He leads the Panthers this season with 19 catches for 326 yards. He also is tied for the team lead with three touchdown receptions. CARLOS’ FIRST SCORE Redshirt freshman running back Carlos Anderson scored his first collegiate touchdown against the Missouri State Bears (9/26) on a one-yard run in the third quarter. Anderson ranks second on the team with 258 rushing yards (51.6 per game) on 63 carries. 5 • UNI FOOTBALL RUFFIN CLIMBS THE PANTHER TFL ALL-TIME LIST Senior defensive end and Buck Buchanan Award candidate James Ruffin added a half a tacke-for-loss against Indiana State to up his career total to 34.0 TFLs. Ruffin trails Matt Mitchell’s 37 TFL (2000-2003) and William Freeney’s 35 TFL (19891992) on the Panthers’ all-time TFLs list. HOME SWEET DOME UNI is 171-42-1 (.800) in the UNI-Dome. The Panthers have gone undefeated at home in a season seven times since 1990. Prior to 1998, the Panthers had two consecutive undefeated seasons in the Dome. The Panthers have posted three perfect home seasons under head coach Mark Farley, including 2001 (6-0), 2003 (6-0) and 2005 (7-0). Prior to a September 24, 1994, loss to McNeese State, UNI had won 29 straight regular-season games in the Dome dating back to the 1989 season when it lost 22-14 to Mankato State in the first game of the year. The Panthers are 62-12 in home Missouri Valley Football Conference games, leading the league in home conference victories. UNI will play host to league foes Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Youngstown State and Western Illinois in the UNI-Dome this season. LAW RUNS PAST 100-YARD MARK Senior running back Derrick Law rushed for a career-high 139 yards in leading UNI to a 30-0 triumph over St. Francis (Pa.). Law carried the ball 19 times for a 7.3 yards per carry average with a long carry of 28 yards. Law’s previous career-high came in the 2007 season against Indiana State when he rushed for 105 yards. HORD FINDS THE ZONE Senior wide receiver D.J. Hord found the endzone twice in UNI’s 30-0 victory over St. Francis. Hord hauled in touchdown passes of 2 yards and 57 yards from senior quarterback Pat Grace. Hord is tied for the team lead this season with three touchdown receptions. Hord, a transfer from Notre Dame, caught 15 passes for 149 yards in 2008 but did not find the endzone. HERRING TAKES IT TO THE HOUSE Jarred Herring’s 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game against St. Francis (Pa.) was the first kickoff taken back for a score by a Panther since Terrell Allen took one 97 yards to open the season on Aug. 31, 2006, at Drake. The play also marked the first return touchdown of Herring’s career. BILLY BOOTS ‘EM Junior placekicker Billy Hallgren tied a career high with three made field goals in UNI’s 30-0 win over St. Francis. Hallgren drilled three-pointers from 40, 27 and 31 yards in the triumph. Hallgren leads the team in scoring through five games with 44 points. He has made 7-of-10 field goals and all 23 extra points he has attempted. EYMAN IS THE MAN Senior wide receiver D.P. Eyman had a day to remember as he made nine receptions for 197 yards and added a 47-yard touchdown to help the Panthers to a 66-7 victory over South Dakota (9/12) in the UNI-Dome. Eyman was listed as the Panthers’ backup quarterback one week earlier against the Hawkeyes and made three catches for 15 yards against Iowa as a wide receiver. BILLY BOUNCES BACK Junior placekicker Billy Hallgren (Coal Valley, Ill.) bounced back from having a pair of field goals blocked in the final seconds against Iowa to tally 11 points, register four tackles and force a pair of fumbles on kickoff coverage in a 66-7 win over South Dakota (9/12). Hallgren made all eight of his extra points and added a 27-yard field goal in a 66-7 victory over South Dakota. Hallgren also dished out some punishment on kickoffs as he tallied four total tackles and forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by the Panthers. GRACE-FUL PERFORMANCE Senior quarterback Pat Grace (Sioux City, Iowa) accounted for seven touchdowns, passed for 455 yards and led the UNI Panthers to a 66-7 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes (9/12), while only playing only three plays into the second half. As a result of his play against the Coyotes, Grace was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. Grace passed for four scores and ran for three others in guiding the Panthers to a 52-7 lead with 8:23 left in the third quarter before departing the game. Grace connected with D.P. Eyman (47 yards), D.J. Hord (21 yards), Schuylar Oordt (13 yards) and Jarred Herring (75 yards) for touchdown passes against the Coyotes. Grace also had scoring runs of 1, 11 and 3 yards in the triumph. Grace’s total offense figure of 477 yards is fifth-best all-time in league history, while his passing yardage figure of 455 yards ranks No. 7 all-time. South Dakota. Herring caught six balls for 100 yards against the Hawkeyes and made five receptions for 129 yards against the Coyotes. He is the first Panther to do so in over a half-decade. In November of 2003, Eddie Galles snared a Dome record 16 catches for 251 yards against Southern Illinois and followed it up with 111 yards in the playoff opening win over Montana State. Herring’s only previous 100-plus receiving effort prior to this season came in the 2008 NCAA FCS first-round playoff matchup with Maine. Herring caught three passes for 102 yards and two scores against the Black Bears in that contest. REMEMBER SAN MARCOS With 445 yards passing against South Dakota, Pat Grace became the first UNI quarterback to break the 400-yard barrier since Eric Sanders did it for the Panthers in 2005. Sanders threw for 417 yards in the national semifinals at Texas State in a 40-37 UNI victory that sent the Panthers to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the 2005 FCS National Championship game. TOP OF THE MARGIN TO YA! UNI’s 66-7 victory over South Dakota (9/12) marked the largest victory margin ever for the Panthers over a Division I opponent. The previous record was a 68-14 victory over Indiana State in 2007 in the UNI-Dome. RECORDS NEARLY FALL The Panthers came close to a pair of all-time records on Saturday in their 66-7 triumph over the South Dakota Coyotes. UNI gained 712 yards of total offense - only 14 yards yards of the school record. The Panthers also gained 30 first downs - only three short of the school record. Senior quarterback Pat Grace passed for 445 yards - only 12 short of the UNIDome record held by Illinois State’s Kevin Green (1998 - 457 yards). MOVIN’ THE CHAINS With 20 first downs through the air against South Dakota, UNI tied the single-game record for first downs passing. It was the third time the Panthers have pulled off the feat, with the first coming against Montana State in 1986 and the most recent coming against Southern Illinois in 2003. UNI’s 30 first downs against South Dakota were only three shy of the singlegame record of 33. BACK-TO-BACK CENTURY MARK GAMES FOR HERRING Sophomore receiver Jarred Herring (Burlington, Iowa) topped 100 yards receiving in back-to-back games against Iowa and 6 • UNI FOOTBALL NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS UNI is the only original Valley Football member to win at least two non-conference games each year. The Panthers are 110-49 against non-conference teams since 1985. BOOTHBY MAKIN’ PLAYS In his first collegiate start as a defensive lineman, sophomore Ben Boothby (Clinton, Iowa) registered five tackles, forced a fumble and tallied a tackle-for-loss at Iowa. Boothby changed the game’s momentum in the third quarter when he stripped the ball from Iowa running back Paki O’Meara and then recovered the loose ball. Following Boothby’s fumble recovery, the Panthers kicked a field goal to take a 13-3 lead over the No. 21-ranked Hawkeyes. He began his career as a defensive lineman but moved to fullback for the 2008 season. Boothby moved back to the defensive line this past spring. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Senior defensive lineman Wes Lane (Waterloo, Iowa) put together an impressive stat line against Iowa. Lane registered seven tackles and was credited with 2 1/2 quarterback sacks. Lane’s first sack of the season came in the first quarter when he knocked the ball loose from Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi. The Panthers recovered the loose ball, which eventually led to a game-tying field goal in the first quarter. HODGE’S DEBUT Senior linebacker Elijah Hodge (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) made his impact felt in his first game as a UNI Panther. Hodge, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin, got the start at middle linebacker against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Hodge’s older brother, Abdul, played linebacker for the Hawkeyes and is currently a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. Hodge secured 11 tackles, which included five solo stops against his brother’s former squad. He is pursuing a graduate degree at UNI after earning his undergraduate degree from Wisconsin in three years. SACK ATTACK The Panthers registered four sacks of Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi on Saturday. Senior defensive lineman Wes Lane (Waterloo, Iowa) led the way with 2 1/2 sacks. Senior linebacker Josh Mahoney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) tallied one quarterback sack, while senior defensive tackle Chuck Kinney (Council Bluffs, Iowa) was credited with 1/2 sack. NONE BIGGER The sold-out Kinnick Stadium crowd of 70,585 equaled the largest crowd to ever see a UNI Panther football game. In UNI’s previous trip to Kinnick Stadium in 2005 it also was a sellout with 70,585 watching the game. YOUTH IS SERVED Nine true freshmen or redshirt freshmen saw their first action for the Panthers on Saturday against the No. 21-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. Those freshmen seeing their first game action included: Carlos Anderson, Varmah Sonie, Timmy Johnson, Andre Martin Jr., Garrett Scott, Terrell McBride, Will Jackson, Tim Sauer Jr. and Kyle Bernard. Anderson, Martin and McBride all started the game. NIFTY DEBUT FOR ANDERSON Redshirt freshman Carlos Anderson (Blue Springs, Mo.) made his first career start at running back for the Panthers against the No. 21-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. Anderson was impressive as he carried the ball 24 times for 75 yards and caught three passes for 28 yards to tally 103 yards of total offense. GRACE NAMED MVFC COOFFENSIVE POW Senior quarterback Pat Grace was named the MVFC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after passed for a then career-high 270 yards and nearly led UNI to an upset over No. 21-ranked Iowa. Grace completed 23-of-37 passes and a score against the Hawkeyes. Grace tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Mahaffey to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. Grace also completed a 50-yard strike to Jarred Herring to set up a third quarter field goal. With the Panthers trailing 1713, Grace guided his squad on a 12-play, 46-yard drive that resulted in a field goal with 4:26 left in the game. He then engineered an 11-play, 68-yard drive in the final two minutes which ended with a pair of field goal attempts to end the game. UNI RANKED #4 IN SPORTS NETWORK PRESEASON POLL The University of Northern Iowa football will begin the 2009 season ranked No. 4 in The Sports Network’s FCS preseason top 25 poll. UNI has finished ranked No. 4 in the nation in each of the past two seasons. For a record fourth consecutive year, Appalachian State has been voted as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Mountaineers (11-3 last season) received 79 first-place votes out of a record 160 ballots cast to top No. 2 Richmond, the team that ended Appalachian State’s unprecedented three-year reign as NCAA Division I national champion last fall. Appalachian State, which finished fifth in last year’s season-ending poll, tallied 3,853 points to beat out the Spiders (3,792) by 61 points. Richmond (13-3) received 72 first-place votes. UNI, Montana and Villanova all received two first-place votes apiece, while James Madison, Weber State and South Carolina State each earned one first-place vote. UNI TABBED #4 IN PRESEASON FCS COACHES’ POLL Coming off a 12-3 record in 2008 and 7 • UNI FOOTBALL reaching the NCAA FCS semifinals, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers have been ranked No. 4 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll. The Panthers also received a first-place vote making them a national title contender and looking to win their third straight league title. For the third straight year, Appalachian State has been chosen as the preseason No. 1 and the defending national champion Richmond Spiders took second place. The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference. PANTHERS PICKED TO WIN MVFC CHAMPIONSHIP The University of Northern Iowa football team has been tabbed as the preseason favorite to three-peat as Missouri Valley Football Conference champions. The Panthers received the top spot in a poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors. The poll was announced in conjunction with the league’s annual Media Day in St. Louis, Mo. UNI has won 14 MVFC titles since the inception of the league in 1985, and the Panthers have captured at least a share of the crown in each of the past two seasons. UNI (314 points and 26 first-place tallies) and Southern Illinois (281 points and nine first-place votes), both appear among the Top 10 in some pre-season national polls. The league’s two newest members - South Dakota State and North Dakota State - are close in the voting for third place, as the Jackrabbits earned 231 points, while North Dakota State, which received one first-place vote, has 206 points for fourth. Only three points separate Western Illinois (174) and Youngstown State (171) in the voting as those two teams rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the rankings. The poll has Missouri State picked seventh (111 points), followed by Illinois State (90) and Indiana State (42). 2009 Valley Football Preseason Poll Team (first-place votes) Points 1. Senior quarterback Pat Grace (Sioux City, Iowa), junior fullback Ryan Mahaffey (Grinnell, Iowa), senior offensive tackle Austin Howard (Davenport, Iowa), senior center Austin Steichen (Remsen, Iowa), senior defensive end James Ruffin (Burnsville, Minn.), senior linebacker Josh Mahoney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and sophomore return specialist Jarred Herring (Burlington, Iowa) all earned preseason all-MVFC recognition. THREE PANTHERS NAMED TO PRESEASON SPORTS NETWORK ALL-AMERICA SQUADS Three University of Northern Iowa Panther football players have been selected to the preseason Sports Network FCS AllAmerica team. Senior Austin Steichen (Remsen, Iowa) earned first-team honors. Senior defensive end James Ruffin (Burnsville, Minn.) was named to the second team, while senior linebacker Josh Mahoney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) garnered three-team status. All 14 FCS conferences were represented by at least one player on the squad, while 58 teams of the 126 playing in the Football Championship Subdivision received at least one All-America selection. RUFFIN’S ON TED HENDRICKS AWARD WATCH LIST The Ted Hendricks Foundation is pleased to present its list of 30 pre-season candidates for the 2009 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, a list which includes University of Northern Iowa senior James Ruffin. Ruffin (Burnsville, Minn.) has been a mainstay at UNI since his freshman season. In 2008, as mentioned, the All-American and first team All-MVFC selection amassed a Missouri Valley-best 18 tackles-for-loss, 10 sacks, 69 tackles, and three forced fumbles. He recorded a career-high eight tackles in an FCS semifinal game against eventual national champion Richmond in 2008. As a sophomore, he tallied 7.5 tackles for loss and 52 tackles to earn All-MVFC honors. During his freshman campaign, Ruffin fought his way onto the MVFC all-newcomer team while registering 26 tackles, three for loss and three pass breakups. In his first three seasons at UNI, Ruffin has 147 tackles, 28.5 for loss, 13.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Now in its eighth season, the Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of college football’s first three-time first-team All-American. As a defensive end at the University of Miami, Ted used his agility, height and reach to block passes and kicks, force interceptions and pressure quarterbacks and running backs. He roamed the front line, read plays and blitzed on impulse, completely transforming the way the defensive end position was played. His professional career spanned 15 years and 215 consecutive games. It included four Super Bowl victories, eight Pro Bowl selections and inductions into the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. It is in the spirit of Ted Hendricks’ aggressive style of play, winning attitude and determination that the Defensive End of the Year Award for college football’s premier defensive end is presented. On-field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the Award’s winner. Members of the national media, head coaches, professional scouts and former winners are included in the Award’s voting committee. Candidates may represent any class (Freshman through Senior) as well as any four-year NCAA accredited school. The candidate’s primary position must be defensive end. RUFFIN NAMED CANDIDATE FOR BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD Missouri Valley Football Conference defensive player of the year James Ruffin is among the 20 candidates on the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the top defensive player in FCS. Ruffin, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, racked up 18 tackles for loss (first in conference), 10 sacks, 69 tackles, and three forced fumbles for the Panthers last year, en route to All-America and All-MVFC honors. 8 • UNI FOOTBALL The watch list will be revised in October and again in November, before the final ballot is announced. Voting from a panel of FCS sports information directors, writers, broadcasters and other football experts will be conducted after the regular season ends. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 30 and will be invited to the 23rd annual Sports Network Awards banquet on Dec. 17 in Chattanooga, TN., the night before the NCAA Division I championship game. The Walter Payton Award and the Eddie Robinson Award will also be presented that night. GRACE NAMED CANDIDATE FOR WALTER PAYTON AWARD University of Northern Iowa senior quarterback Pat Grace has been named a candidate for the 2009 Walter Payton Award by The Sports Network. A total of 20 candidates will be announced in alphabetical order prior to the start of the season, with four candidates being released each week. The watch list will be revised in October and again in November before the final ballot is announced. Voting from a panel of FCS sports information directors, writers, broadcasters and other football experts will be conducted after the regular season ends. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 30 and will be invited to the 23rd annual Sports Network Awards banquet on Dec. 17 in Chattanooga, Tenn., the night before the NCAA Division I championship game. Grace (Sioux City, Iowa/Heelan HS) replaced graduated Payton Award runner-up Eric Sanders as the Northern Iowa quarterback last season and did not miss a beat, leading the Panthers to a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference championship and to within a few seconds of the NCAA Division I title game last season. In 2008, he passed for 2,041 yards and 14 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes in route to earning second-team All-MVFC honors. The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 618 yards and 11 touchdowns. He came back from a mid-season knee injury to play some of his best ball down the stretch. Grace passed for a career-high 255 yards and added 84 yards rushing in a 36-34 first-round playoff win over New Hampshire. Grace had a career-high 99 yards rushing in a 31-17 victory over Il- linois State. He finished the season ranked No. 15 nationally in passing efficiency and No. 40 with 221 yards of total offense per game. In his first three seasons, two as a backup to Sanders, Grace has 2,247 yards passing with 30 total touchdowns. UNI SPORTS ‘FFF’ HELMET DECAL TO HONOR ED THOMAS The University of Northern Iowa football team will wear ‘FFF’ decals on their helmets for the 2009 season in memory of Ed Thomas, the legendary educator and football coach from Aplington-Parkers- 9 • UNI FOOTBALL burg High School and UNI alum. The decals represent three core values recognized by those closest to Thomas – faith, family and football. Thomas was shot and killed on June 24, 2009, while supervising a morning weightlifting session in the school’s weight room. The Iowa Football Coaches Association and the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced in August that the decals would be available to honor Thomas and the basic tenets he stood for. Thomas had stated in the past, “If all I have taught you is how to block and tackle, then I have failed as a coach.” He guided student-athletes to lead a life of faith and to remain family-oriented. Thomas coached four current NFL players at Aplington-Parkersburg, including former UNI center Brad Meester (1996-1999), now of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas was also named the NFL High School Coach of the Year in 2005. He had a career record of 292-84 in 37 seasons as a head coach, winning two state championships at Aplington-Parkersburg. THE MARK FARLEY RADIO SHOW UNI head coach Mark Farley’s radio call-in show will be broadcast live on the Panther Sports Network every Thursday throughout the season. FACEBOOK www.facebook.com/UNIAthletics TWITTER www.twitter.com/UNIAthletics UNI Installs MondoTurf With Ecofill Star for 2009 Season The University of Northern Iowa installed Mondoturf Ecofill Star artificial turf in the UNI-Dome replacing the previous artificial surface which has been in use since 1992. Construction began July 13 and the final touches were put in place Aug. 15. “Mondo won us over for both its commitment to high quality installations and the performance of its products,” University of Northern Iowa Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. “We had a very lengthy, detailed process, working with a lot of vendors to make sure we got the best possible surface for the UNI-Dome. The Dome serves many constituencies beyond Panther athletics, and it is important we provide a safe, playable surface that will enhance one of the top indoor football facilities in the nation.” The total cost of the new turf will be $800,000. UNI received a $500,000 grant from the Black Hawk 10 • UNI FOOTBALL Gaming Association with the remaining funding coming from private sources. “In this environment, general fund monies are not available for a project of this magnitude. Without the Black Hawk Gaming Association’s commitment, the idea of new turf would remain on the ‘wish’ list.” The surface will come in 32 rollable panels and will be secured by a Velcro system. The mid-field and endzone logos will be in-laid and will not require annual painting of the turf. The new field features a different look than the old turf, as well as a new look to the end zones. The end zones are now purple and have Panthers in gold letters. The UNI football team is excited about the new surface as well, according to head coach Mark Farley. “The level of excitement regarding UNI football is very high with the new turf - the players could not wait to get out and experience it firsthand,” Farley said. “This is as close to grass as you are going to get for an indoor facility and the closer you get to grass the safer the conditions for our student-athletes. This surface will assist us in recruiting and allow UNI football to continue to be one of the finest FCS programs in America.” Installed in more than 300 facilities worldwide, Mondoturf Ecofill Star was designed to deliver the appropriate amount of shock absorption and energy return for optimal, naturalfield-like athletic performance without the problems associated with traditional artificial fields. It features Ecofill Star, an environmentally friendly infill that is made from a synthetic material and not reground tire pellets commonly used by other artificial turf manufacturers. Ecofill Star is virtually odor free and also is completely recyclable, which is an industry first. Sports Network Top 25 FCS Poll Top 25 FCS Coaches Poll Rank School Record Points Rk. Iowa put the first points on the board on their first possession of the game, scoring off a 29-yard field goal by Daniel Murray. The Panthers capitalized on a Hawkeye miscue by putting three points on the board on a 39-yard field goal from Billy Hallgren. The Panthers forced a Hawkeye punt on the following possession and starting on their own nine-yard line, the Panthers drove 91 yards in 15 plays, capitalizing on a 14-yard touchdown strike from Pat Grace to Ryan Mahaffey. After trading fumbles to start the second half, UNI started on their own 33-yard line after Ben Boothby forced his second Iowa fumble of the day. A 50-yard pass play from Grace to Herring on the next play set UNI up on the Hawkeye 17-yard line. Hallgren turned the Hawkeye miscue into three points, splitting the uprights from 34 yards out and extending the Panther lead to 13-3. On the ensuing possession the Hawkeyes drove 70 yards to close the gap at 13-10 off an 11-yard touchdown run by Adam Robinson. Iowa took their first lead since early in the first quarter at the 13:18 mark of the fourth quarter when Stanzi found Tony Moeaki in the corner of the endzone from six yards out. Murray added the extra point and the Hawkeyes went up 17-13. The Panther defense held a threatening Hawkeye team at the UNI 31-yard line, stuffing Iowa’s Adam Robinson on a fourth and two. UNI then drove 46 yards to the Hawkeye 29-yard line, setting up a 39-yard field goal for Hallgren to pull the Panthers within 17-16. On the following possession the Panther defense forced a three-and-out on the Hawkeyes, giving the Panthers the ball with 2:14 left in the game. Starting on their own eight-yard line, the Panthers drove to the Iowa 24-yard line to set up a 40-yard field goal for Hallgren. The Panthers first attempt at the field goal was blocked by Iowa’s Broderick Binns and Christian Ballard, but the because the ball failed to cross the neutral zone and UNI’s Mahaffey came up with the loose ball with one second left on the clock, UNI got a second attempt at the field goal. The Panthers second attempt from 41 yards was also blocked, this time by Jeremiha Hunter, to give the Iowa the win, 17-16. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The fourth-ranked University of Northern Iowa football team nearly eclipsed a 29-year old record for total offense on its way to a 66-7 victory over the University of South Dakota. A crowd of 12,688 witnessed the Panther offense gain 712 yards in the game, just 14 yards short of the 726 yards put up by the Panthers against Evansville in 1980. In total, the Panthers ran 64 plays for 712 yards, gaining 30 first downs in the process and averaging a robust 11.1 yards per play. The Panther defense held the Coyotes to 315 yards and forced 5 turnovers. Senior quarterback Pat Grace led the Panther offensive attack, completing 24-of-32 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns. Grace came up 12 yards shy of the UNI-Dome record for passing yards, a mark set by Illinois State’s Kevin Glenn in 1998. Grace also carried the ball five times for a total of 32 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Zach Davis took over for the majority of the second half, completing both of his attempts for 33 yards. Senior wide receiver D.P. Eyman had a career-best game with nine receptions for 197 yards, primarily seeing first-half action. Eyman made clutch plays repeatedly for the Panthers in the first half, taking a wide receiver screen for 30 yards and making a 29-yard reception on 3rd and 15 in the first quarter. Sophomore Jarred Herring added 129 yards receiving on five catches. Matt Strathman led the Panthers’ rushing game with five carries for 69 yards. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa football team improved its record to 2-1 with a 30-0 shutout victory over St. Francis (Pa.) in the UNI-Dome on Saturday. The Panther defense limited St. Francis to 147 yards of total offense for the game. Senior running back Derrick Law rushed for a career-high 139 yards on 19 carries. Senior wide receiver D.J. Hord led the Panthers in receiving, snagging four catches for 93 yards and two scores. Sophomore receiver and kick returner Jarred Herring took the opening kickoff of the game 88 yards through the Red Flash coverage team to put the Panthers up a touchdown only 14 seconds into the game. On the Panthers’ first offensive drive, Grace found big chunks of yardage through the air. He completed a 23-yard pass to Hord and a 30-yard pass to Herring to put UNI in the red zone. Grace found Hord in the end zone from two yards out for the Panthers’ second score. The PAT by Billy Hallgren put UNI up, 14-0, which would remain the score for the rest of the first half. UNI found the end zone twice in the first five minutes of the game, but failed to capitalize on the remaining possessions of the first half. Carlos Anderson carried the ball eight times for 60 yards and caught one pass for eight yards in the first half. Grace went 5-of-10 for 69 yards with one TD and one interception in the first half. UNI converted its first possession of the second half into three points. Hallgren split the uprights with a 40-yard field goal to stretch the margin to 17-0 with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter. Following a St. Francis three-and-out, Grace found Hord in stride down the left sideline - this time for a 57-yard scoring strike. Grace dropped the ball in over the top of two converging SFU defensive backs, and Hord outran everyone to the endzone. UNI rushed the ball 12 times for 77 yards in the third quarter, while the Panther defense held the Red Flash offense to minus-seven yards rushing for the quarter. The Panthers added two more Hallgren field goals, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter, to reach the final score of 30-0. UNI outgained the Red Flash 382-147 in total offense and held St. Francis to a 3-of-15 conversion rate on third downs. St. Francis had 32 rushing attempts for a net of 40 yards on the game. Their closest scoring opportunity ended on a missed 45-yard field goal attempt by Josh Thiel late in the first quarter. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 3-ranked University of Northern Iowa football team can get quite defensive and Saturday showed why as the Panthers came within seven seconds of a shutout and posted a 35-7 victory over the Missouri State Bears. UNI improved to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play. Missouri State fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. UNI had scored 124 straight points following a first-quarter touchdown from South Dakota on Sept. 12 before the Bears scored with seven seconds left in the game. The Panthers got on the board first against the Bears on a three-yard touchdown run by Jarred Herring, the first rushing touchdown of his career. Herring took an option pitch from quarterback Pat Grace and went untouched around the left end into the endzone. The score capped a 13-play, 83-yard drive that consumed 5:53 off the clock and gave UNI a 7-0 lead with 3:50 left in the first quarter. Grace helped extend the lead to 14-0 on an 11-yard run with 6:17 left in the second quarter. UNI moved it to a 21-point margin on a 27-yard passing strike from Grace to D.P. Eyman with 1:59 left in the first half. The Panthers’ dominating defensive effort in the first half limited the Bears to minus-nine yards rushing. Missouri State tallied only 42 total yards on 26 offensive players in the first half. While the Panther offense was racking up 259 yards and 15 first downs, the Bears managed only five first downs in the first 30 minutes of action. UNI pushed the advantage to 35-0 in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Carlos Anderson and a 26-yard touchdown pass from Grace to Eyman. With 7.2 seconds left in the game, the Bears broke through and scored a touchdown on a Cody Kirby to Clay Harbor on a five-yard passing play.
