RATED Y FOR YOUTH
What is RATED Y FOR YOUTH?
It is an outreach program for school-aged students that facilitates intelligent dialogue and media literacy skills
through non-fiction media arts. Students attend the festival, view thought-provoking documentaries and
participate in post-film discussions with filmmakers and invited guest speakers. The program runs May 9-13, 2016.
What is DOXA Documentary Film Festival?
The word doxa means “opinion.” The DOXA festival uses documentary films to propel social action, incite
discussion and make change. It is produced by The Documentary Media Society, which is a non-profit charitable
society devoted to presenting independent and innovative documentary films to Greater Vancouver audiences.
How can you sign your class/youth group up for this program?
Fill out the form on the last page and send to Program Coordinator, Selina Crammond via fax at 604.674.8109 or
scan and email to [email protected]. You can also fill out an online form at doxafestival.ca/RRYForm Please
note seating is limited and bookings are only confirmed upon payment. If you have any questions or concerns,

Almost 75% of the world’s mining companies call Canada home, but
most resource extraction happens beyond Canadian borders, where a
lack of regulation and a profit-seeking agenda have have a huge environmental and social impact. Digging beneath glossy mining company
marketing materials, the filmmakers, from Vancouver BC, travel to
rural parts of Africa to talk to local residents, government officials, and
community activists to uncover the truth. Bold and confrontational, the
filmmakers employ a follow-the-money approach that effectively traces
how everyday Canadians are implicated.

From Palestine to Italy, civil war and other humanitarian crises have
forced kids around the world to discover different ways to preserve their
sense of agency and dignity. This program of short films explores the
multiple forms that activism can take, whether that’s postering, skateboards, or friendship. These kids find a way to take back their own power
and help others in the process.

Did you know the Canadian pinball champion lives right here in the
lower mainland? Meet Robert Gagno, a young man from Burnaby.
Despite challenges with austism, Robert travels the world competing
in pinball championships. Wizard Mode is a candid personal perspective
on autism through the life of one of the world’s greatest pinball players.
He consistently finds himself between two worlds, as he tries to
maintain a successful pinball career and live a fulfilling life as a person
on the autism spectrum.

The Seven Fires Prophecy is an ancient Anishinaabeg story that predates,
and even predicted the arrival of European settlers. The prophecy acts
as the bedrock of Zack and Adam Khalil’s debut feature. Set in their
ancestral territory of Sault Ste. Marie (that straddles the border between
Michigan and Ontario), the film transgresses mainstream convention
and linear history to fashion a subversive look at the devastating impact
of colonialism through a collage of animation, candid interviews, and
hallucinatory performances. The Ojibwe brothers are masterful video
artists at heart, employing a sharp trickster wit when interviewing local
museum workers about stolen artifacts. In a time of governmentsponsored truth and reconciliation efforts, it’s important to think long and
hard about what decolonization actually looks like. The Khalil brothers’
brazen film offers an entirely new vision that unsettles colonial narratives,
challenges notions of conventional non-fiction cinema, and begins to
carve space for contemporary Indigenous identity.
