I have been in touch with Al Farr during his Valiant Battle with the "C" word. This past
week he seemed "resigned" to losing this one !
Having known Al since we were about 11 years old at the Bay Terrace Elementary
School, this is a tough one to take. Al has always been a "Champion" for all causes and
injustices.
His new wife, Sharon, has become a friend of mine over the phone and internet.
Marvelous and Strong herself !
One can only HOPE that Al can pull this one out of the fire and show us all how to be
strong and brave, He is such a wonderful and true Old Friend....and it all started in Vallejo
at Bay Terrace School with Mrs. Snipes as our Inspiration and fabulous teacher !

It was very emotional reading the article in last week's MU about our classmate, Al
Farr. He had offered to help find our missing members back in late January or early
February but told me that he was having surgery so wouldn't be available until the end
of February. Prayers going his way.
Al was always ready to pitch in and help. He helped me find a few
people too. Great guy.

Vallejo Hall of Famer Milo to be honored

8/26/16,
Frank Milo 75, will have his name etched permanently on the new
football stadium at El Cerrito High School on September 2,
cementing his position as one of the most successful high school
coaches in the Bay Area.
Milo, compiled a 139-70-4 overall record during a 20-year career at El Cerrito, and is
one of the most respected prep football coaches in the Bay Area. Milo coached teams
won eight league titles and finished runner up in the North Coast Section championship
game three times.
The veteran coach, who was inducted into the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame in 2010,
said the field dedication is something he never expected nor anticipated.
“After my career as a coach, I would have never imagined anything like this would
have ever happened to me,” Milo said. “It will be a very special day for me and my
family. I feel very fortunate to have this honor bestowed on me at this stage of my life.”
Milo, who lives in Vallejo with his wife Peggy and dog
Kona, came up on the sandlots and fields of Vallejo.
He was an all-league back and starter for Vallejo High
School in football and baseball, graduating in 1958.
He was a two year starter at
Vallejo Junior College before
earning a teaching degree from
San Francisco State University
where he also played football..
Milo began his teaching/ coaching
career at Richmond High School,
1964-80 and moved to El Cerrito
in 1981. He also served stints as athletic director at
both Richmond and El Cerrito.
After retiring from coaching at El Cerrito in 2002, Milo got the coaching bug again and
returned to the sidelines, serving as the defensive coordinator at Contra Costa College
in San Pablo until 2007. Health issues eventually forced him out of the game.
He still couldn’t let football go, though, working as an observer and evaluator for the
Northern California Colleges Football Association for many years.
Three times he coached in the Contra Costa-Alameda County United Cerebral Palsy
All-Star Football game, 1971, 1985 and 2010. He also served as an advisor and
honorary coach for the game from 1985-2001.
He was selected as one of the top 20 high school football coaches of the 20th century
by the Contra Costa-Alameda County sportswriters.
In the end, Milo could not have done it without the help of his coaching staff, school
administration, parents and players.
“I think it’s a really strong reflection of the players, coaches and the support of the
faculty, administration and my family that I had over the years,” Milo said.

Hi Harry
I’m glad that we are going to have a MU
Reader's Picnic at Blue Rock Springs on the 22nd of September. It sounds as if you
are not having people sign up ahead of time; therefore no name tags need to be made.
I did them for last year's event. The only bad part about that was being stuck at the
entrance to our area to make sure that everyone got theirs. I didn't get to "socialize"
with everyone; but I at least did get to see
everyone as they came in.
Carol, you are part of the reason
that I decided to forego name
tags… the memory of you stuck at
the entrance for the entire time
was more than I could take.
I do think that we NEED name tags so we
recognize people.
 Maybe we could just have blank name tags for people to make as they come
in. I remember that wind was a slight problem so we would need some type of
container for the blank tags, as well as a receptacle for tossing the backings,
etc. Also, a big sign at the entrance to ask people to make their name tags.
 Or, we could have several people just circulate around the group and ask people
to do name tags, or ask each person for their name, school and class year and
write up the name tag and give it to them. The latter sounds the easiest to
me. A good way to mingle and find out who is there.
So excited and looking forward to a huge turn out.
Hmmm… Carol, let me contemplate your ideas for a bit. At minimum I
would like to have people sign in so we have some sort of an idea who
is attending. Maybe we can get Carol Alarid-Weber ‘56 and a couple
of other volunteers to help so it isn’t all on one person.

Time to Drag Your Name into the MUD
So far we have 242 entries out of our subscription base of 1,543.
The MUD includes readers from 25 states and 5 countries. The only
information that is displayed in the MUD is:
 Your name (including maiden if applicable)
 School attended/grad year
 City you currently reside in.
If you want to be listed in the MUD just let me know. The MUD can be

“Politics make strange bedfellows”…
and gives you a
headache to boot.
I, more than anyone else, am looking forward to the day that I can
eliminate the Tangled Web feature from the MU. For that to happen,
however, we need to make sure our candidates win in the November
election so that we can get rid of Ramona Bishop and all of her
henchmen (and women) who are dragging Vallejo schools further into
the abyss with each passing day. It’s imperative that we get out the
vote in Vallejo and that we also support our candidates monetarily to
help them get their name in front of the voting public.

Once again, Vallejo made the list of the top 25 most dangerous cities in California
along with Oakland, Stockton, Richmond, Compton, etc. So, so sad. Especially to all
of us who still remember what a great place Vallejo was while we were growing up,
attending VHS and feeling such great pride in our town. My baby brother left Vallejo for
safer pastures and moved to Eureka. Eureka is also on the list!
The article could not have chosen a worse photo to depict Vallejo - UGH! I sure hope
that bringing new business opportunities and jobs to Mare Island will help the city to
turn this very unfortunate and unwanted statistic around in the not too distant
future............
The tenth most populous city in the
San Francisco Bay Area, Vallejo is also
the largest city in Solano County. Many
visit and enjoy Vallejo for its most
prominent attraction — the Six Flags
Discovery Kingdom theme park.
However, locals experience a different
side of the city. The chance of being a
victim of crime in Vallejo is about 1 in
18, and locals run those chances every
single day.
If we improve the schools in Vallejo you’ll see a positive domino
effect on all aspects of life in the community.

Reunion Gnus…

The VHS Class of '61 55th year reunion is soon upon us. Reservations are beginning
to pick up and we should have a nice turn-out. We already have more people signed
up for the Friday evening social than estimated, but our Saturday evening event is still
way below our estimate. But that can be a good thing - easier to visit with everyone.
But the deadline for signing up is fast approaching - Sept. 15 - so get those checks in.
Even if you aren't planning to attend, we'd appreciate it if you'd send in the form to
update your contact information. Even if you think your information has not changed,
we could have VERY old information in our master file.
It has been fun tracking down the "missing". I just found one person by going on the
Classmates website and seeing where the person said he lived in Vacaville. I then
went to the White Pages App on my phone, put in his name and Vacaville, CA - and
guess what? He lives right around the corner from me in a gated 55+ community of
222 homes!! I then went to the list of residents in this gated community and he was
listed there so now we have his phone number as well. A lot of information on these
school/class-type websites are not updated by the people very often but every once in
a while they pan out. So, don't forget what websites you have joined and update them
as needed!!
’62 Making Progress…
We had another VHS Class of ’62 Reunion Committee meeting as we
continue to plan for our 55 Year Reunion in 2017. Our Chair, Loretta
Smith-McCracken hosted us, once again, in her lovely home and fed
us cookies, lemonaide and other delights.
In was generally thought that we would have fewer people in
attendance for our 55 Year Reunion than we had for our Fifty. Since
we had 220 for our Fifty we are planning on attracting between 125150 for this one and are trying to budget accordingly.
Also, we had considerable discussion regarding our Friday Night
Social which has always proven to be very popular with our
classmates. The question is “Do we charge for that or not?” The
issue is that many people attend the Friday night event and NOT the
Saturday night Reunion Dinner, thereby not contributing anything
toward the cost of invitations, postage etc.
Another one of the discussions is centered around music for the
Saturday event. Do we want a live band, as we had during the Fifty
Year Reunion, or would the playing of music from CDs from the
1950/60s era on a decent sound system, suffice. I’d like to hear
opinions from my ’62 classmates on this issue and I’ll take them back
to the Committee at our next meeting.

The Mail Bag

Harry, It's late here, past my 9 p.m. bedtime, so I need to
get this written, send it and go to bed!
In this week's MU a name was mentioned that woke me
up, Margie Jorgenson? If I remember correctly, as I have
not seen her in 50 years (my God!), she was a beautiful
girl, a little tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, a beautiful smile,
and everything else was in proportion and put together nicely! I always seemed to
gravitate towards the unattainable, Carol Criswell, Margie, Denise Feenan and her
sister, (nothing kinky), alas, the story of my life.
Now, on the other hand, there is almost nothing better than a tomato, sweet onion,
cucumber and bibb lettuce sandwich, with a great bread (for me sourdough), slathered
with Best Foods Mayo, sea salt and fresh ground pepper on a hot summer day here in
Texas! Yum!
They have sourdough in Tejas? Go figure. I’ll bet its not as good as
SF sourdough.

mailing. Tthanks again for all the hard work you put into the MUD and other causes
that are of interest to all schools alumni.
BTW...I will also be sending a check to support Bob Lawson’s campaign. It's time the
queen and her cronies at the .Vallejo Unified School District and a few on the Vallejo
School Board are definitely dead wood and need to be disposed of.. .time to plant new
seeds for all new growth in those areas… the Vallejo School Board needs new blood....
the 15 year incumbent needs to go, along with the queen and her court at the VUSD.
They need to be run out of town. The whole school system in Vallejo needs new blood
and the VUSD doesn't need a queen with her court running things. It needs people
who care about the future of the children of Vallejo and who are not interested in being
social climbers. They need people that are there to do the jobs that they were hired to
do. The School Board does not need or want a 15 year do nothing beneficial for the
students incumbent. Vallejo make sure to get rid of the dead wood this time.
Oh Lord, don't get me started...

Thanks for the nice veggies. Found this info on the internet.
Tomatoes have a high water content, and both over- and under-watering can
create texture issues with ripened tomatoes. Growers should soak tomato
plants thoroughly every two or three days to avoid stressing the plants with
excess water. It's necessary to allow the ground to dry well between watering
to end up with firm-textured tomatoes.
Tomatoes thrive in hot, sunny conditions. When temperatures drop below 50
degrees Fahrenheit, tomatoes tend to get mushy. If a cold snap is predicted
after fruit develops, it's advisable to cover the plants at night to protect them
from damage and impending mushiness. For the same reason, storing
tomatoes in the refrigerator can also lead to a mushy texture. It's better to
store tomatoes on the counter and eat them at the height of their ripeness.
Overripe tomatoes also become mushy, so eating them shortly after ripening
is another helpful way to avoid mushiness.
Linda, the only time I put a tomato in the refrigerator is after I’ve
already cut into it and I still have half left. I put it in a ziploc bag but
it doesn’t last long anyway. Regarding the watering schedule, I don’t
pay too much attention to that. I water my plants that are in smaller
pots on a daily basis because otherwise they’ll dry out. The in ground
plants I’ll usually water every other day.

I don't know if anybody else has noticed, but at the end of the latest American Tires
commercial a gentleman at the counter looks very similar to our own Larry Petrie
‘60. Has he gone Hollywood on us?
Hmmm… well, Larry Petrie is a good looking guy, so maybe that is
him. But honestly, would you buy a used tire from him?

In the last issue of the MU, Howard Owen ’68 was inquiring about the
family of Evelyn and Vince Lawrence because he wants to return
some photo albums to their family if he could find them. Evelyn was
the sister of "Smiling Sam's" wife and Howard was inquiring as to
Sam's last name. I just knew that at least a couple of our readers
would know the answer to that… and I was right.

I asked John what a “Polk Directory” was,
and here is his answer.

Dear Harry,
Thanks very much for the connection to be in touch with Louise Terry Kelly.
Regarding "Smiling Sam's" -- think his last name was Moss -- Sam Moss. And that we
referred to the beautiful home on the corner at 131 El Camino Real as the "Moss
Home". In the 1940's I was in "Smiling Sam's" many times with my grandmother. She
picked up her prescriptions and I hung out at the "make-up" counter.
So happy to learn of the September 22 picnic. I love the pictures of the classic cars
and hope my schoolmate Lane Morrison (it was Lane who first sent me your MU) will
bring his 1947 Cadillac which I've been begging him for years to sell to me or at least
put me in the Will.

I’ve been meaning to write you for weeks but you know how old brains are. Anyway,
please add me the MUD.
I just had double cataract surgery and can’t believe what a difference it’s made. I
thought my vision was OK; but after the surgery with corrective implants I’m amazed at
what I was missing. Everything’s so crisp and sharp. The only downside is I now have
to wear reading glasses for close work. I know different people have had different
results but I couldn’t be happier. Everything has gone great. I’m 3 weeks out with no
problems. Hope all is well on your end.
I’m glad you’re happy with your cataract surgery. Mine didn’t seem to
make a bit of difference… in fact I think my vision is getting worse.
As long as I can read the computer screen to publish the MU and keep
driving I’ll be okay.

Harry, thanks for all that you do to keep all of us together. It is very much appreciated.
Although I do like to hear about the local politics, I hope that those who receive your
Monday Updates will post other things about their lives and what they are doing.
(I couldn’t agree with you more, Fred, and I’ll be glad when we can
stop writing about the local political scene. I’m sick of it.)
I wanted to let my ’63 classmates and your readership know that I have written a new
book that will soon be published. After 4 years of research and writing a unique book
on Leadership and then an additional 8 months of searching for the "right" publisher, I
am happy to report that American Press has agreed to publish my book on a world
wide basis with emphasis at the college and university level. The book is entitled:
Leadership Lessons from Great World Leaders by Dr. Fred Lang. Bellevue
University, which is located in the mid-West. will be the first institution to use it in their
Doctoral Program. It is scheduled for publication in the coming months.
More to follow...

Concord over forty years ago. I know he keeps in contact with Bobby Taylor.

Hey Harry...on the MUD you've got me listed as living in Benicia. I've always been
in VALLEJO. Granted I did spend 27 of my 35 years teaching at Benicia HS, so it may
have seemed I was a Benicia resident. Many times when I'd get home at 5:30 or 6 pm
my wife Pat would say "where the hell ya been, I thought school was out at 2:45 ! "
Okay… that’s a reasonable question. So where were you, Dalton?

Here is another event to promote...Vallejo's own Empress Theatre. The Empress
Theatre by the way, is operated and managed by the Vallejo Community Arts
Foundation (VCAF), a nonprofit public benefit corporation. Also, the Empress is always
looking for new volunteers to help keep the shows going. Interested...contact Ali

Come experience Alvon and Tommy Castro on stage at the same time at the
Empress's “New” Wednesday Night Live Pro Jam on August 31st at 8pm.
Guaranteed to be an incredible show. The Wednesday Night Live Band will
feature Timm Walker on Bass, Lorenzo Hawkins on Keyboards, Wilson Brooks
on Drums, and Charles Spikes on guitar. We are changing the start time to 8pm
and going till 11pm.

Oh well, Harry, my how the time flies. The class of 1963 from both Hogan and Vallejo
will celebrate their 55th in 2018. We will start the process with meetings in 2017
sometime. We all enjoy your hard work and dedication publishing the MU each week. I
will see you around town.
Skeeter, the combined Hogan/Vallejo Class of ’63 is very fortunate to
have such dedicated volunteers such as you, setting the pace.

In answer to your question, my husband, Al, and I live in Napa. BTW I am Howard
Fitzpatrick's sister.
We lived in the same house the entire time we were in Vallejo. We lived on the edge of
school district areas. With student population changes that were occurring at that time
(1947 to 1959) I attended many schools: Carquinez for Kindergarten and first; Grant
School for second; Beverly Hills for third, Steffan Manor for fourth, back to Beverly Hills
for fifth and sixth, Hogan Jr. High for 7th & 8th, grades. (The first year it opened as a
four year Jr. Hi. That was the Fall of 1955.) 9th and 10th grades were at Franklin Jr. Hi.
We were on the old 6-4-4 plan which included the VJC on the same campus as VHS.
In the Fall of 1957 we switched over to the 6-3-3 plan and the incoming Sophomore
class came with us Juniors. I think the VJC moved to Mini Drive. Howard didn't make
as many changes as I did. The only friends of mine with a similar record were Navy
brats.
Anyone else suffer through the same school bounce?
Hmmm… between kindergarten in Forest Hills, PA, and my three years
at Vallejo High, I attended 9 different schools in four different cities.

When I went to Loretta’s for the Reunion Committee meeting, I
brought her a few fresh veggies from the garden and I also provided
Sharon Kent-Harris with a few unripe green tomatoes so she could
make fried green tomatoes. How’d ya like ‘em, Sharon?

OMG, when I got home one of the ripe green tomatoes was split from rolling around in
my car, so I decided to taste it. I have not tasted a tomato that delish in years… I ate
the whole thing standing over the sink. I’m anxious to fry the non-ripe green tomatoes.

I had my fried green tomatoes last night. They remind me of my mom and dad who
fried everything include corn and asparagus. Thanks
I asked Sharon to send me her recipe for fried green tomatoes… and
she did.
Sharon’s recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes:
Slice green tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick and soak slices in milk. Mix cornmeal, flour,
salt and pepper in a bag. More cornmeal than flour. I never measure. I don't think it
makes much difference how long you soak them. Shake off excess milk as you drop in
the bag. Do it so all of the tomato slice is covered with mix. Fry in veggie oil until
brown. I usually put them on paper towels for excess oil and salt them again.
I think one of the things I enjoy about gardening is being able to share
some of my bounty with friends. I think I’ll go fry me up some of them
thar southern fried ‘maters right soon. LOL.

Facebook or emails with me… He kicked me in the shins in the 6th grade at McKinley
for no reason whatsoever. I've kidded him about this over the years. I've lost contact
with him now.
Also, he crawled out the window on the last day of classes at VHS in June 1960… It
was the office machines class… He hated it! (Yes, alcohol was involved.) So… He
goes into business as Vallejo Typewriter. Go figure!!!
Regarding William Bauman ‘65. Could it be he is Joyce Bauman's brother? She was
my very good friend. We graduated VHS in 1960. She got married to a Ransom
Richards and moved away. Jackie Garton ‘60 and I have been looking for her. Last
Jackie knew she was living in Nevada having retired from Sears. I would so love to find
Joyce again. We lived one block apart and met in Hogan Junior High School back in
the day.

COLORFUL LANGUAGE ---- from Roy G. Biv The Radio Lab show just had a
fascinating show on color perception. Newton, using TWO prisms, was the first to
determine that white sunlight consisted of a spectrum of colors. Turns out dogs see in
black, white, blue, green, and a little yellow. But some other creatures (sparrows,
butterflies, and mantis shrimp for example) see more colors than humans. Gladstone,
carefully studying references to colors in Homer's works, concluded he almost certainly
was color blind.
BRENDAN RILEY ---- Regarding your Lower Georgia St. project: I suggest you include
the few businesses that were reasons for Vallejo's young people to go down there: to
buy a box of sardines on ice to cut up and use as bait for fishing off one of the old
wooden piers along the waterfront, to visit Al's Sport Shop to purchase something like a
new baseball glove, and of course to Doc Webb's to browse the “gag-type” items sold
there – and see that nickel you wanted to pick up but knew was nailed to the floor.

THE “RHYMES WITH ORANGE” COMIC STRIP ---- recently featured the image of a
classic statue (either Greek or Roman) with two pigeons conversing. It was
showcasing a guest cartoonist, RINA PICCOLO. Any relation to you Carmela? How
common is the Piccolo surname in Italy?
HOOSIER ---- was the name of this shaped “broad”
axe. (Nickname was Zeek.) After a tree was felled,
using a narrower axe, this kind was used to remove
branches and square up the log for building a cabin
or other structure.
I found this nine-inched blade one (and the
horseshoe) last week while metal-detecting at a
nearby farm site recently cleared to construct new
homes. It was probably forged before 1800.

to spend it hiking eight miles with her
husband on the Appalachian Trail.
We had a big family dinner for her that evening at
this Magnolias restaurant in Purcellville, with a
fancy B&R ice cream cake back at the house
afterward.
Two weeks earlier they went to see
the Giants win against the Nats here.
WHEN I WENT TO LIVERPOOL---- I rode the actual ferry across the Mersey River
and they played that hit song by Gerry and the Pacemakers, “Ferry Cross the Mersey,”
in route.

Celebrating professional Athletes with roots in Vallejo.
CC Sabathia (8-11, 4.31 ERA) pitched 7 outstanding innings last
Tuesday in the Yankees win over the Seattle Mariners. He only gave
up 3 hits and one earned run while striking out 7 and walking one.
It was a different story yesterday against the Baltimore Orioles, as he
was pulled after 6.2 innings. CC had shut out the Orioles on two singles until he gave
up a homer in the sixth. He gave up 6 hits and 3 earned runs and had 2 walks and 8
strikeouts. The Yanks lost 5-0.

C.J. Anderson, Bethel High grad (2008), carried the ball 11 times
for 50 yards in the Bronco’s 17-0 pre-season victory over the Los
Angeles Rams on Saturday.

Driving Around Europe Without A Map, Part 12 … BLOWOUT
IN BOLOGNA
Out of date,
but still grooving!
I
t’s fascinating how we can go through weeks, months and
years of our lives remembering nothing in particular about
any of them. We can go through our entire adult life
repeating the same routine day in and day out, wearing the
same out-of-date fashions and sporting the same unfashionable
haircut until we arrive at our finish line with only a small pea
pod’s worth of memories that haven’t faded with the passage of
time.
And many of those events lasted for mere seconds!
What’s up with that? A confluence of the sun and the moon? Did the ying and the yang
suddenly get together? Was it a rare glance out of shadows into bright sunlight? Or
perhaps an epiphany we bumped into along the way?
It’s hard to tell. Often it’s so ephemeral that we don’t even know it happened until
after it happened! We remember seemingly trivial events vividly for our entire lives,
mundane happenings like running down a street or waiting in a line or … well, you
name it, we’ve all had them.
Many of them seem ordinary in retrospect. Simple everyday occurrences that
somehow got mixed-in with a mystical elixir of an unknown sort. But of course they’re
not all what you’d call ordinary.

Take, for example, the look on Doug’s face when the front-right tire of my VW exploded
into a hundred tiny sheds. He looked a lot like Edvard Munch’s painting called the
Scream … a guy cupping his hands over his ears with a distorted face displaying fear,
terror, horror, fright, panic and a realization that in a split-second his life will never be
the same again … ever!
Doug knew that turning a VW
into a tripod wasn’t a good idea
We’d been making good time up to that point, ripping down
a blistering hot autostrada not far south of Modena cruising
at about eighty miles per hour when the tire blew … well, more
accurately, disintegrated.
The heat of the street inflated the bald tires to their bursting
point, which proved that the cop in Vienna had been correct …
those tires were not safe to drive on!
Up to that point I’d been enjoying the drive, one of those with an elbow out of an open
window and an arm hanging from the steering wheel. I’d been chatting with Doug, an
altogether pleasant and literate fellow whom I’d met in Switzerland, when the
unexpected, violent shredding of the tire almost flipped us over … it was just like
someone had kicked a leg out from under a table.
We instantly started to hurdle diagonally across multiple lanes of autostrada swerving
right, dodging left and somehow narrowly missing all those irate Italian drivers waving
their hands and shouting at us from their cars and trucks.
That’s when Doug, who’d been hitching his way around the world, had second
thoughts about the deal we’d made back at the hostel on the Isle of Capri off Naples
where we’d met. He’d offered to pay for gas if he could ride south with me. As I had no
destination in mind other than south, it sounded like a great idea. So we hopped into
my VW and hit the road.
Move aside people!
I’m coming through!
Doug proved to be a great companion. He was
smart, witty and helpful … and never more so than
when, after we collected our composure on the side
of the autostrada,

we realized all four of the car’s remaining tires were as bad, or worse, than their
shredded mate.
We mounted the spare and limped into Bologna, a major Italian city not far from
Modena, driving past its many architectural wonders hardly noticing any of them at all.
We were looking for the grubby part of town, the part littered with wrecking yards
that we might yield cheap, used tires … and we finally found one!
Unfortunately it had just closed for lunch and the owner’s mid-day nap. That meant a
about a three hour delay for us … so, as two reasonable wanderers, we decided to
reconnoiter the place to make sure the wait would be worth it.
From the alley behind the place we could see a huge mound of what looked like
used VW tires! They lay just on the other side of a tall fence crowned with barbed wire.
Inspired by impatience and fueled by the impetuosity of youth, not to mention
situational morals, Doug said, “Hey, cup your hands.”
“What?”
“Like this,” he said, bending over and making a kind of stirrup. “I think I can reach
’em!” and with that Doug stepped in the stirrup I formed, hopped up on my shoulders,
leaned over the barbed wire and started grabbing tires.
A scarecrow’s got no brains,
that’s sure easy to prove!
“How’s this one?” he asked in a strong stage whisper.
“Looks pretty good to me!” I replied whispering back. He
threw it into the alley.
He did it again and again until, by the time he got to the
fourth tire the shutters covering one of the windows in the
residence above the store flew open with a such a clattering bang you could hear it echo up and down the alley.
Out of it popped an incredibly angry bald, red-faced man
who started shouting expletives, warnings and slurs
regarding our mothers and our heritage, shouting so loud
and fast that he sounded like a machine gun
shooting vowels!

Doug jumped and threw one tire each on my extended arms. He did likewise, and we
started running like mad down the alley looking like some kind of cubist Picasso
scarecrows with tires on their arms.
Other residents lining that alley threw open their shuttered second-story windows and
joined in, yelling so loudly that it started to sound like the chorus from a Puccini grand
opera! And all I could think of was, “Oh my God! I’m going to go to jail! I’m going to rot
in an Italian jail! Damn! Damn! Damnnnnnn! I’m going to jail!”
But I didn’t go to the slammer! We made it back to the car before anyone could catch
us, tossed the tires in the back seat and got the hell out of Bologna as fast as my poor
little bug could go. After clearing the city I stopped at a service station on the autostrada and pointed to the tires in the back seat.
“Put those on please,” I requested.
They might not be all the same size,
but they’ll do!
Following a quick inspection, the attendant turned to
me, “Oh no signor! No, no, no! She’s no possible.
That I think I no cannot do. Those tires, she’s all
different!”
“Well do they fit the rim?” I inquired.
“Oh si, si, signor but she’s not same. She’s different. All different. The sizes she
different!”
But he couldn’t argue that they beat the hell out of the tires on the car, and so the guy
hunched his shoulders and gave me the kind of look only an Italian who thinks you’re
completely loopy can give you, and mounted the tires.
They worked fine. In fact they performed perfectly for thousands of miles over
exceedingly rough terrain! However, Doug never quite seemed the same … not as
relaxed as he had been before that explosive moment on the autostrada just outside
Modena, Italy when he told me he saw his life flash before his eyes!

In the lower 48 we’re still enjoying the heat of summer (well, some of
us are) and even in Montana and Idaho we’re at least a month away
from viewing the fall colors. But in Salt Springs Island, BC, Canada
the Salmon family is enjoying nature’s palette of colors.

I belong to Boyz Under the Hood and I know a ton of Vallejo "car people" but that's
about it. (Bill, maybe you can help us “recruit” a few of those “car
people” to attend the MURP and show off their wheels.)

In Memoriam
Athony Zimos ‘61
December 27, 1942-August 2, 2016

Harry, one of the downsides of having a high school class reunion
is finding out that some members of your class have passed
away. Such is the case for Anthony (Tony) Zimos. He passed
away on August 2, 2016.

My dearest Anthony passed away August 2, 2016 around 6am. He
struggled with illness for a long time, and his passing is truly a
blessing for him. He is finally at peace. (He had a boatload of medical issues stemming
from diabetes; ultimately, he had a badly infected gall bladder that he never recovered
from.)
He didn't want any wake, the funeral was in San Diego on August 13, followed by an
open house at our home in NYC the weekend after.
A native Californian, Tony entered the Navy SEALs
immediately after high school, and served in Vietnam from
1962-1965. He then did missile recovery work in the South
Pacific. He came back and bought into San Diego Diver's Supply, expanding the
business by creating the first recreational SCUBA diving program in the world. He
owned a number of offshoot businesses (mountaineering, skiing, surfing, etc). After he
sold his share of those businesses, he managed and improved supply chains and
logistics for several large businesses. He decided he would go back into diving, moved

to NY, and that's how we met. We were inseparable since the day we met.
To show you what kind of person Tony was, he insisted he didn't want any black worn
at his funeral. He wanted everyone to wear Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip flops. He
wanted stories to be told of how fun he was to be around; how he positively influenced
people; how he kicked people in the butt when they needed it; how he offered
acceptance and gentle guidance when people struggled. The services were just that.
Whether or not you met him, know that he was always a gentle man and a gentleman,
a scholar and a student, a jokester and a straight shooter. He was a man of integrity at
all times, and didn't care if you agreed with him or not - you were always welcome at
the table. When I explained to Marybeth (our 10 year old daughter) what kind of funeral
her dad was going to have, she smiled and said, "That sounds like a celebration!" And
that, my friends, is exactly what it was. I was honored to know him, and amazed that
such an interesting person would choose me to be his human diary.
He is, and will be, deeply missed.

The Last Word
When Harry Met Sally - It was in early July
of 1966 at one of the dorms at Weber State
in Ogden, Utah. Wow! Over fifty years
ago.
When Harry Married Sally – That was a
couple of years later, on August 31, 1968
in Lincoln, Nebraska. So I guess it’s fair to
say that we were married 48 year ago.
When Sally Divorced Harry - We took a
little “break” from being married back in
1986.
When Harry Remarried Sally - That “break” lasted until August 31,
2002 when we decided to get married again… yes, to each other.

So you could say that in a couple of days Sally and I will be celebrating anniversaries 48 and 14. (I made sure that both wedding
dates were on August 31 so I wouldn’t have to buy her two presents.
Smart, eh?)

During last year’s tomato growing season, I was ecstatic to report
that I had a Nebraska Wedding heirloom weigh in at 2.93 lbs. Imagine
my delight when I saw another behemoth this year. I thought for sure
I had a new record…

wisecracks from

I took the rest of the tomato and saved the seeds.
I’ll keep them in water for a few days for the scum
to float to the top and then I’ll rinse and dry them
out for next season.
The Nebraska Wedding tomato has a nice glowing
orange color throughout and is simply delicious. If
you want to try your hand at growing this particular heirloom let me
know and I’ll send you a few seeds.

Everybody Pedals at Davis
Since our granddaughter, Nikki, will be attending UC Davis this
semester she’ll need to get around campus and the prefer-red method
is bicycling. So Sally and I decided to help her buy a bike for school.
DAMN! Do you have any idea what bike’s cost!!? I didn’t pay that
much for my first three cars… put together.
Anyway, Nikki will be majoring in something called Biochemistry &
Molecular Biology. Since I didn’t have a clue as to what that meant, I
decided to go online and look up the major…
Here are the Requirements:
Foundation courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. At the upperdivision level, you will take a 4-course sequence in advanced biolo-gical topics
and an intensive lab course designed to introduce you to the methods and
procedures used in studying biochemical processes. You will supplement your
courses in biology with sequences in organic chemistry. All of your advanced
course-work is designed to give you maximal opportunities to increase your skill
and familiarity with research laboratory procedures.

Tommy Castro is an American blues, R&B and rock
guitarist and singer. He has been recording since the mid1990s. His music has taken him from local stages to
national and international touring. His popularity was
marked by his winning the 2008 Blues Music Award for
Entertainer of the Year. According to The Chicago SunTimes, Castro plays "Memphis soul-drenched R&B…topof-the-line blues. "Castro has a soulful voice, searing
guitar and is an excellent songwriter and vocalist.
In 2013, he recorded The Devil You Know, and
was reviewed by Allmusic.com, saying "Castro brings
fiery garage energy to everything. His guitar playing is
fired up and roaring with a renewed sharpness that keeps
the pot boiling. His voice is a soulful and versatile bluecollar growl. This album is full of the blues, but it's also like a full-charged blueeyed R&B and soul review, making this one of Castro's finest releases.

Friday, September 30, join us in the Mombasa Room, Double Tree by Hilton,
American Canyon from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided –
buy your own drinks at the bar. We need to know how many plan to attend this

Saturday, October 1, No Host Cocktails at 6:00 p.m., Buffet dinner served
6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Party continues to 11:00 p.m. with a small dance floor
and 50’s/60’s music. All this is in the Grand Ballroom. from 6 – 10 p.m.
Pictures will be taken for a Memory Book which will cost $25 if you wish to
purchase one. Individual/couple pictures (5 x 7’s) will be taken near the
elevator on the 2nd floor and will be ready within minutes at a cost of $15 each.

The Monday Update was originally intended to serve as a newsletter for members of the VHS Class of ’62. Over a period
of time, members of companion classes (1960, ’61, ’63, and ’64) and from Hogan and St. Vincent’s, indicated an interest
and began participating. Today the Monday Update has a wide and varied range of readership ranging from 1937 and

into the new millenium. We also have several “guests” who have no direct affiliation with Vallejo, whatsoever, but are able
to relate to the era.. Anyone who has an interest in, or is nostalgic for, our era is welcomed to participate.
