BURNTWOOD SCHOOL
INFORMATION 2015–16
ADMISSION OF PUPILS TO YEAR 7
Burntwood admits 283 students to Year 7 each year.
The criteria for the admission of students to Year 7 in September are as follows:
Category 1 Places
71 places allocated by reference to general ability to those applicants with the highest scores in
the Wandsworth Year 6 Test.
Category 2
The remaining 212 places to be allocated as follows, in this order:
I. Girls looked after and those who ceased to be children looked after because they were
adopted, or because they were adopted, or because they became subject to a residence
order or a special guardianship order (note 1);
II. Applicants with a professionally supported exceptional medical need or exceptional social
need for a place at the school, as decided by the Governing Body (note 2);
III. Girls not admitted under Category 1, who have a sibling (note 3)attending the school at the
date of application (note 3);
IV. Girls who live nearest to the school, using a straight line measurement from home to school
as calculated by the Wandsworth Council Geographical Information System (note 4).
All applicants will apply on an equal
footing, and will not need to specify
under which category they are applying.
Appeal Arrangements
Applicants refused a place at the
school will have the right appeal to an
independent admission appeal panel
established under the School Standards
and Framework Act 1998.
For 283 places available in September
2015, 813 applications were received
by the deadline, 31st October 2014.
10
Notes
1. A child looked after is a child in the care of a local
authority or provided with accommodation by that
authority in accordance with section 22 of the Children
Act 1989. An adopted child is defined by section 46 of
the adoption and Children Act 2002. A residence order
is defined by section 8 of the Children Act 1989. A
special guardianship order is defined by section 14A of
the Children Act 1989.
2. Applications made on exceptional medical grounds must
be supported by a current letter from a specialist health
professional. Applications made on exceptional social
grounds must be supported by a current letter from a
social worker or other care professional working with
the family. The letters must give reasons why the child’s
condition or circumstances make it necessary for the child
to attend the school, and the difficulties that would be
caused if the child had to attend an alternative school. If
this information is not provided by the application closing
date, the application will not be considered under this
criterion.
3. A sibling is a full sister, a step/half-sister living at the
same address, a child who is living as part of the family
by reason of a court order, or a child who has been
placed with foster carers as a result of being looked after
by a local authority.
4. The straight-line measurement used to prioritise applicants
for admission to schools in Wandsworth commences in
all cases at the location of the property determined by
the National Land Planning Gazetteer and terminates
at the central point of the school site as determined
by Wandsworth Council’s Geographical Information
System. Measurements by alternative systems and/
or to other points will not be taken into account in any
circumstances. Where applicants have identical distance
measurements, priority amongst them will be determined
at random.

BURNTWOOD SCHOOL
INFORMATION 2015–16
DISABILITY AND SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
At Burntwood, teachers take account of particular learning and assessment requirements and make provision, where necessary, to support individuals or groups
of students, to enable them to participate effectively in the curriculum and assessment activities.
• Students with special educational needs
• Students with disabilities
• Students who are learning English as an additional language
The school will work actively to promote equality and foster positive attitudes and commitment to an education for equality.
We will do this by:
• treating all those within the school community (e.g. pupils, staff, governors, parents and the community)
as individuals with their own particular abilities, beliefs, challenges, attitudes, background and experience
• creating and maintaining a school ethos which promotes equality, develops understanding and challenges myths,
stereotypes, misconceptions and prejudices
• encouraging everyone in our school community to gain a positive self-image and high self esteem
• having high expectations of everyone involved with the whole school community
• promoting mutual respect and valuing each other’s similarities and differences and facing equality issues openly and honestly
• identifying, challenging and removing all practices, procedures and customs which are discriminatory
and replacing them with practices that are fair to all
• monitoring evaluation and reviewing all the above to secure continuous improvement in all that we do.
