From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Who do the crowds say that I am?” (Luke 9:19)
Our Lord Jesus presents a very natural question to His Disciples when He asks who people say that He is. Jesus may
just want to know how others perceive him. Maybe He wants to know if His ministry is effective. Whatever it was,
Jesus then presents what I think is the real question. He asks the Disciples who they think He is. St. Peter responds in
those familiar words... “The Messiah of God.” It is a good thing to be able to reflect on what we believe. That ability
to ponder what we believe can be a help to internalize those beliefs and make them a powerful force in our lives. So
Jesus poses the question to them.
Jesus asks us the same question...Who do YOU say that I am? And how good that question is for us to ponder! I dare
say that we will have some different and varied responses. Yet, like St. Peter, we need to profess Jesus as the Messiah.
And if He is the Messiah in our lives, what does it mean for us? Faith in Jesus is a gift of the Holy Spirit. We hear in
the Scriptures that it is only in the power of the Holy Spirit that we are able to profess Jesus as Lord. So in pondering
the question of who Jesus is, we know we need the grace of the Holy Spirit in our lives. That Spirit gives us the grace
to accept Jesus as our Savior. So in the power of the Holy Spirit we need then to ask what does it mean when we
acclaim Jesus as Lord. St. Paul tells us in his Letter to the Galatians that through our faith in Jesus, we now belong to
God. In belonging to God, all distinctions are removed and we become ONE in Jesus...hence a son as He is the Son.
Remember in the Old Testament it was the first-born son who inherited the blessings and posterity. We now are the
inheritors of all of the promises that God offers. So clothed in Jesus, we are now ONE in Him. So how do we live
this oneness in Jesus? Well, the Scriptures are given to us for teaching and learning and we see in the Old Testament
reading that if we are open to God, then He will “pour out a spirit of kindness and prayer.” In that prayer and kindness,
the Holy Spirit can guide us to live our lives in accord with the ministry and life of Jesus. Prayer helps us to model
ourselves after Him we proclaim as Messiah.
The Gospel is very clear today in what a disciple or follower of Jesus must do. Like the Master, we must take up our
cross and deny ourselves and be willing to follow Jesus. This denial of self is to see the needs of others before our
own. We need to have the eyes and heart of Jesus who was in tune to the needs of others. To pick up our cross is to see
our service to one another not as a burden to fulfill but rather as an obligation we embrace with a generous heart. This
is not an easy task and impossible for us on our own. BUT we have been given the Holy Spirit that makes all things
possible.
So ponder the question Jesus asks...”Who do you say that I am?” If you can proclaim Jesus as Lord.... then what does
it mean for your life? What a great question to bring to prayer...there is great fruit and peace in discovering the answer
for your own life.
Our Music Director, Robert Levulis, was recently honored by his high school, St. Francis, in Buffalo, NY. He is the
first alumnus to be enrolled in their Fine Arts Hall of Fame. We congratulate Robert on this prestigious honor.
As many of you may have heard, I am proud to announce the new administration for St. Mary’s Elementary School.
Dr. Celeste Checchia has graciously agreed to stay on for another year as principal and I have hired Sarah de Venoge
as the Assistant Principal. Sarah was the unanimous choice of the search committee in their recommendation to
me. This year will be one of transition as Ms. de Venoge completes her Administration degree at Fordum University
and then in 2017 takes on the role of principal. Please join me in congratulating Ms. de Venoge and thanking
Dr. Checchia for continuing for another year. I am so grateful to the search committee and most especially to the
President of the Schools of St. Mary, Mrs. Grace Cavallo, for their hard work, dedication and commitment to
maintaining the academic excellence at St. Mary’s Elementary School.
In Jesus,
Fr. Bob
Stewards of God’s Gifts
“Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asks Peter in today’s Gospel. Does my use of the gifts and talents entrusted to
me accurately reflect my answer to that same question? How willing am I to deny myself, take up my cross and
follow in His steps?
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who practice the spiritual work of mercy to
“instruct the ignorant” by handing on the faith to kids and grandkids by their own example, or offering
their gifts to teach in RCIA, confirmation, youth group or religious education.
The collection for Sunday, June 12, 2016 amounted to $26,037.00
The collection for Sunday, June 14, 2015 amounted to $23,601.00.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Mercy for
Fathers,
Mercy by
Fathers
by Father Jude
Happy
Father’s Day,
Fathers! Father’s Day this year
has the color of “Mercy.” We
look at Fathers and Fatherhood
with the binoculars of mercy.
God, Fatherhood, and Fathers: In
Ephesians 3:14-15, St. Paul says, “I
bow my knee before the Father, from
whom all fatherhood takes it title.”
God is the first Father, the Almighty
Father who created all other fathers
in mercy and love. God’s creation
of humanity began with one first
man, husband and father – Adam.
Masculinity, the idea and power
of being united with a woman in
marriage and family, and the power
to generate new life with the woman,
all came from God. Throughout the
Old Testament God presents Himself
as Father of His People (as well as
Spouse). The Son of God would
always refer to Him as “My Father,”
as well as “your Father in Heaven.”
Our thoughts about fathers and
fatherhood begin with the Father of
fathers, the Author of fatherhood,
and should always. We would then
look at fathers as the miniature
images of the Father and His qualities
– generator of life, loving, merciful,
strong, protector, provider, defender,
etc. “If you who are evil know how to
give good gifts to your children, how
much more your heavenly Father,
would He not give [even] His Holy
Spirit to those who ask Him?” (Luke
11:13)
Strong and Proud Fathers: Today
we remember all that fathers are,
and all they do. And they are, and
do, even more than children will
ever know! We celebrate strong and
proud fathers. We remember all the
love, mercy, care and concern, time,
devotion, talents, resources, etc. that
go into being a father. We remember
fathers who labor, and who go
without, that their wives and children
may have. We honor fathers who are
like their Patron, St. Joseph – ever
attentive and obedient to the Father,
taking care of God’s Family according
to God’s will and directives,
provident and protective of wife and
child. Fathers and Grandfathers, be
proud of your fatherhood vocation
and role, and play it well! Children
and grandchildren, remember always:
no one loves you, and cares about
you, more than your parents and
grandparents.
Challenges of Fatherhood and
Masculinity Today: Is fatherhood
facing challenges today? What has
been the effect of radical feminism
on masculinity and fatherhood? Is
it true that the man/father has no
legal rights in matters of abortion
(Supreme Court 1976, 1988; Planned
Parenthood)? And little say/rights in
matters of divorce? Has masculinity
and fatherhood been eroded? Do
some men feel emasculated? And are
some men emasculating themselves?
Some men abandoning their families?
Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted wrote
an Exhortation to Men entitled
“Into the Breach” (September 25,
2015). And he began this way: “I
begin this letter with a clarion call
and clear charge to you… Men, do
not hesitate to engage in the battle
that is raging around you, the battle
that is wounding our children and
families, the battle that is distorting
the dignity of both women and men.
The battle is often hidden, but the
battle is real. It is primarily spiritual,
but it is progressively killing the
remaining Christian ethos in our
society and culture, and even in our
own homes.” He deals with this in 23
pages, and it’s a good read.
Be Fathers, Be Masculine: The
Father of fathers is the Eternal
Wisdom, All-seeing and All-knowing.
Creating man and manhood as part
of family and society is of wisdom.
The place and role of father is of
wisdom. Fathers, be fathers, be
masculine, be strong, and play your
role! Playing your role for wife,
children and all is an act of mercy!
The Adult Choir sings its last Mass of the 2015-16 season today at 12:00

Uniondale. The adult choir will resume singing at the 10:30 AM Mass in

June 2016
Dear St. Mary’s Parishioners and Friends:
Over the past few months, the Principal Search Committee worked diligently to review all candidates
and conduct interviews that would lead us to the best possible administrator for Saint Mary’s Elementary
School. I would like to thank the members of the Search Committee for their commitment, time, and
energy. Their attention to detail and strong bonds to St. Mary’s made this process one that not only
produced results, but one that strengthened our future.
I am pleased to announce the future leadership of Saint Mary’s Elementary School. It was my decision
to ask Dr. Celeste M. Checchia to remain in office as the transitional principal for one year. She has
enthusiastically rescinded her resignation to continue serving the School she loves so dearly.
I have appointed Ms. Sarah de Venoge, our 8th grade teacher as the assistant principal, which will give
our School an outstanding leadership team. As a graduate of both Schools, she brings a true love and
commitment to St. Mary’s Elementary School. Ms. de Venoge demonstrated all of the components that
the parent community and faculty shared with me when I reached out to them for their thoughts on the
qualities of the next principal. Ms. de Venoge was unanimously favored by the Search Committee to
be part of the leadership team while she completes her studies at Fordham University and receives her
Masters in Administration and Leadership, along with the required certification in the spring of 2017. Ms.
de Venoge currently holds a BA and MS from Binghamton University and has been a faculty member for
the past four years. Ms. de Venoge will work alongside our veteran principal to make the transition to
becoming our next principal.
I am grateful to our president, Mrs. Grace M. Cavallo and Mr. Jonathan D. Kramer, principal of St.
Mary’s High School, and Dr. Celeste M. Checchia whom will be working closely with Ms. de Venoge in
preparation for her new role. Their combined years of successful academic leadership will serve Ms. de
Venoge and our School well through mentoring and planning initiatives.
I am confident that Ms. de Venoge will take on this transition period with the same high caliber practices

We have much to celebrate and applaud. Please join me in giving thanks to God for Dr. Checchia’s

Re-registration for 2016-17 Religion classes. Forms can be picked up outside our office (lower level of the Church)
or downloaded from the St. Mary’s website, www.stmary.ws. Click on Religious Education, Class Schedule and then
Registration.
The five Tuesday classes for grade levels 2 through 5 are almost completely full. There is room in the Tuesday 1st
grade classes. Families will be directed to Thursday classes as Tuesday classes reach their maximum number. We still need
catechists (teachers) on most grade levels. Please prayerfully consider teaching as a way of serving God and St. Mary’s Parish.
All families new to our program are welcome to come to our office to pick up Registration forms and learn more about
our program. Please make sure that you are registered in St. Mary’s Church. If you are not sure, check with the main
Parish Office (627-0385).
A Note from Lorraine Czarniak:
It has been my privilege to serve God and the St. Mary’s parishioners as the Director of Religious Education. Thank you so
much for the many good wishes and gifts I have received from parents and all of the prayers I received from the children in
the program. My office is filled with your Spiritual Bouquets.
So many parishioners have generously given their time, knowledge and love to the children. You have blessed me with your
cooperation and your friendship over the years. I will continue to pray for God to bless you and the Holy Spirit to inspire
you to witness daily to the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Adult Faith Formation
RCIA With the completion of the instruction of this year’s RCIA candidates, we begin our search for other folks in our
midst who might like to join the Catholic Church or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. All parishioners are called
on to seek out friends or family that might like to join the Church or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Please, invite
them to do so. Anyone interested should call Sr. Teresa at 627-0385, ext. 1010 for more information.
There are many adults that have never received the Sacrament of Confirmation for a variety of reasons. Confirmation
is the third Sacrament of Initiation and is one of the requirements for Catholics to qualify as sponsors for Baptism and
Confirmation.
The Summer Book Club met on Monday, June 13th, to discuss Chapters 1-8 of Catherine of
Siena by Sigrid Undset. We had a lively and interesting discussion of this fascinating saint. Book
Club members wanted to share this prayer written by St. Catherine of Siena, which we will recite at
each meeting.
O eternal Trinity, my sweet love!
You, light, give us light
You, wisdom, give us wisdom.
You, supreme strength, strengthen us.
Today, eternal God,
Let our cloud be dissipated,
So that we may perfectly know and follow your truth, in truth
With a free and open heart. Amen.
On June 20th we will discuss Chapters 9-16 and on June 27th we will discuss Chapter 17 to the end of the book.
On July 11th we will begin the discussion on our second choice. The title is God’s Mercy Revealed-Healing for a
Broken World by Peter Magee.

Fatherhood and
the Sacredness
of Human Life
Pope John Paul II wrote of the
importance of fatherhood in his
Apostolic Exhortation, Familiaris
Consortio:
by Kimberly Baker
The upcoming celebration of Father’s
Day is a fitting time to examine the
irony that in our current culture,
fatherhood is rarely mentioned.
When mentioned at all, fathers are
mocked or portrayed negatively.
Some movies and stories downplay
the role of the father in a child’s life,
yet simultaneously portray the child
as suffering from the father’s inability
to live up to that role.
In reality, the nobility and significance
of fatherhood remain a powerful
witness in the lives of those who have
had the opportunity to grow up with
a present and caring father. And there
are, of course, profound stories and
testimonies to counter the culture’s
defeatist attitude towards fatherhood.
Alongside a mother’s unique and
nurturing role, the father also has a
vital part to play in safeguarding the
sacredness of new human life and in
forming the younger generation. The
father’s special role in protecting and
defending both mother and child
helps ensure the stability and healthy
“[A] man is called upon to ensure the
harmonious and united development
of all the members of the family…
by exercising generous responsibility
for the life conceived under the heart
of the mother, by a more solicitous
commitment to education, a task he
shares with his wife, by work which is
never a cause of division in the family
but promotes its unity and stability,
and by means of the witness he gives
of an adult Christian life which
effectively introduces the children
into the living experience of Christ
and the Church” (no. 25).
The dedication and commitment of
husbands and fathers to their families
needs to be affirmed and supported if
we are to build a culture of life.
June is also the month of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus. How fitting is Christ’s
example of sacrificial love when
we recall how he gave his life for
his bride, the Church. The extent
to which he pours out his heart
for humanity shows the ultimate
model of a man of compassion and
quiet strength. We can see concrete
examples of this in the Gospel, in
the way he treated the Samaritan
woman with dignity and in the way
he welcomed the little children who
wanted to meet him.
When a baby is growing in the womb,
the first vital organ that develops is
the heart, which starts beating by
about 21 days. What does this say
about the human person? It is almost
as if God honors the capacity to love
by giving the heart supremacy even
in the physical development of the
human being. While not physically
connected to newly developing life
in the same way as the mother, the
father need not be excluded from
this beautiful mystery. During this
month of June, may all hearts look
to the Sacred Heart as a source of
inspiration, and may all husbands and
fathers be renewed in their calling to
build up the culture of life, starting in
their own families.
