From Father Richard
Have mercy on me O God, in your goodness.
Psalm 51:3a
So cries the psalmist, “Have mercy.” With infidelity after infidelity, God’s people were often in need
of mercy. It is this God to whom the psalmist calls out, who has come to us in the Person of Jesus Christ. He
has not only told us of the Father’s mercy, but has shown us.
Had Jesus himself not shown his disciples what mercy is by welcoming sinners and eating with them,
who would have believed him as he taught through parables? Perhaps no one, save his holy mother. More
than anything, Jesus taught by example.
We bear the name of Christian. We are concerned with evangelization and new-evangelization. Who
will believe us if we are not merciful? Who will believe us if we do not seek out the lost? Who will believe us
if we do not welcome and forgive? Mercy is not merely a disposition; it is an action.
Jesus tells the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin. It is not the finding of sheep or coin which
concludes the lesson of these parables; it’s the great joy. God’s seeks us out, and rejoices in finding us, that
is, finding the way to our hearts. Mercy brings joy.
We must always ask, “Who is not here?” And why? Could it be that they have not been invited?
Mercy invites. In a way words cannot, mercy invites.
This weekend we celebrate ministry and our call to ministry with our annual Ministry Fair. This is an
opportunity to learn more about the ways our parish serves the whole community. It is also a renewed
opportunity to consider your share in parish ministry. Spend some time with other members of our parish at
the Ministry Fair; it can do a lot of good – for yourself and for others.
By now, registered parishioners have also received a mailing from me on the comprehensive scope of
stewardship. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider anew your Prayer, Ministry, and Sacrifice
as members of Saint Mary Catholic Community. Stewardship is how we live our faith as disciples. It is mercy.
Praise God for all your goodness, and thank you all for being part of the parish we are!
Father Richard
Pope’s Intentions for September
Universal: Centrality of the Human Person. That each may contribute to the common
good and to the building of a society that places the human person at the center.
Evangelization: Mission to Evangelize. That by participating in the Sacraments and
meditating on Scripture, Christians may become more aware of their mission to
evangelize.
Deb’s Reflection
During the summer I attended a workshop on “Addiction, Grace, and
Healing” at the University of Montana. It started with the book, Addiction and
Grace by the late Gerald May, a psychiatrist, spiritual director, and author. He
stated, “All people are addicts. Addictions to alcohol and other drugs are
simply more obvious and tragic addictions than others have. To be alive is to
be addicted, and to be alive and addicted is to stand in need of grace.’
Whether we’re talking about lawful or illicit drugs, alcohol, pornography, the Internet, gambling,
nicotine, caffeine, or countless other substances and behaviors, it’s very likely you know someone who has
struggled with a serious addiction. It’s possible that you have dealt with a serious addiction yourself. And if
we’re honest, we can all identify addictive patterns of behavior within ourselves.
Whatever the case may be, acknowledging and coming to terms with one’s own underlying brokenness
is the key to breaking the cycle of addiction and setting out on the path of healing. The last phrase of May’s
observation points the way. It is only when we acknowledge that we stand in need of grace that healing and
redemption become possible.
Grace is the most powerful force in the universe. It can transcend addiction and every other internal or external power
that seeks to oppress the freedom of the human heart. Grace is where our hope lies.

The Nazareth Page—A gospel meditation for the home
September 11, 2016 – 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Luke 15:1-32
Did you ever notice that Jesus was considered a bit of a rebel in his time? He might not have used this
term but he surely wanted people to change and to expand their limited horizons. To do so, he often
went beyond the conventional ways (or limits) of his time. He was judged by some as a revolutionary
because he strongly was opposed to the self-serving use of political power so common back then.
Think about the example he used in this Sunday’s gospel. A shepherd lost one sheep from his herd of one
-hundred. At first, he appears short-sighted, maybe even a bit crazy in his response. Suppose that while
he looked for the lost sheep, the rest of his sheep took off for distant fields. That’s not the behaviour
of a very smart shepherd! Yet Jesus praised his action.
Like most of the stories told by Jesus, this story is really about God. First of all, it reminds us that God
knows and cares about each one of us. What if I was the lost sheep? Would God go out of the way to
retrieve me? The answer is clear. Absolutely yes, God would.
God loves each one of us, which makes God’s love a lot like that of a good parent. Each child (even if
there were a dozen) is loved and treasured, at least, most of the time. If one were lost, the parent would
drop everything and search for the missing child. Some say that good parents love in a crazy sort of way.
That’s true. So does God!
Jesus was criticized in that he “welcomed sinners and ate with them.” Most people back then advised
against welcoming “bad” people, and by all means, never eat with them. It might indicate that you like
them. Horrors!
Jesus often did the opposite of what “polite society” suggested. That was because he embodied the
loving ways of God. Just like a good parent, God desires to offer us, all of us, blessings rather than
curses.
Today, God’s way of mercy and forgiveness challenges us, especially during this Year of Mercy. This
might mean that we try to be receptive and kind to those we may not even like, our own lost sheep

A Disciple’s Stewardship — Prayer, Ministry, Sacrifice
Stewardship is a way of life rooted in faith that requires us to reflect on the gifts
entrusted to us by God and how we use them.
As praying stewards we pray publicly in the liturgy and privately in our homes.
As ministering stewards we assist the whole community with our labors.
As sacrificing stewards, we contribute financially to support the parish with a pledge.
Saint Mary Catholic Community is thankful to you and to all who have supported the parish in every way over the years.
Thank you for past pledges and for your consideration of a pledge this year. Our parish is dependent upon your support
and simply cannot exist without it. May the Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as we continue to walk together
each day as fellow travelers in God’s kingdom.
Our parish is a supporter of a number
of outreach organizations in town,
