From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners.
“As I have loved you, so you should love one another.” (John 13:31-35)
St. John speaks so eloquently of the love that Jesus has for us. It should be a comfort to know that no matter where
we are in our faith journey or how far we have traveled from the path of Jesus, His love for us is offered as gift to us.
Love must play a vital part in the life of a believer. Love is the hallmark and sign of those who have chosen to accept
Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. If we ponder on how much we are loved and cared for, it should be a moment
of deep contemplation of what path we are traveling. If we have embraced and “believe” that we are loved, it would
follow that we want to know more about Jesus and follow His commandment to love one another. In discovering
the message, it makes sense that we would want to respond back to the free gift of love by freely walking the path that
Jesus offers.
When our hearts are open to Jesus, we see that His message is a path to personal freedom and peace. For our own
wills, this giving of self to Jesus can be a difficult process. So often our own wills and desires “get in the way.” How
often do we know what Jesus asks of us yet find it difficult to bend our wills in submission to His plan and purpose
for us. Maybe it is fear that keeps those walls up; fear of what Jesus will ask of us or fear that hearing His voice may
mean that certain parts of our lives or response system will have to change. But Jesus will never ask anything of us
that He, with us, cannot accomplish. So how do we put fear aside? How do we open ourselves to living the will of
God? Through the power of the Holy Spirit, which has been given to each of us at Baptism and Confirmation so that
we may be open to hear and believe the message of Jesus. This message promises us peace when we give ourselves to
God. Through our own will this is not possible, BUT if we are willing to open ourselves to the power of the Holy
Spirit, great things can happen. That power calls us to LISTEN to what Jesus may want of us. Listening is also a
difficult discipline but with practice and silence it becomes easier. So hear the words of Jesus . . . Do not be afraid .
..live in His love and be that love to one another. And as I always encourage . . . READ THE SCRIPTURES so you
may know the one you serve.
I am pleased to announce that after consultation with Mrs. Grace Cavallo, the President of our Schools, and the
Religious Education Board, we have hired Deacon Tom Anderson as the new Director of Religious Education.
Deacon Tom brings his deep Catholic faith, theological training and commitment to the youth. I am confident that
he will continue and expand on the wonderful work that Ms. Lorraine Czarniak has done in her tenure here.
Mike Griffin, a teacher from our Elementary School, has completed his third “Faith and Basketball Clinic.” Over
80 young people from our school and Religious Education joined him on Friday and Saturday. Along with basketball
and volleyball our youth heard spiritual talks throughout their time together. Friday night I offered Exposition and
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Mike and I both gave a talk on the theme of the two days: “Let Your Light
Shine.” It was a moving and prayerful two days and I was so impressed with the faith of our young people. Assisting
through these days were Seminarians and Brothers from the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.
In Jesus the Risen Lord,
Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts
In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples - and us - a new commandment: “Love one another.” Good stewards
who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this commandment.
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who give witness with a corporal work of mercy
- welcoming the stranger - by sharing their gifts of hospitality with others through ministries such as
greeters, ushers and welcome committee.
The collection for Sunday, April 17, 2016 amounted to $26,404.00
The collection for Sunday, April 19, 2015 amounted to $27,845.00.

our program. Please make sure that you are registered in St. Mary’s Church. If you are not sure, check with the main
Parish Office (627-0385).
Classes are over but practices for sacraments of initiation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation, will continue.
Wednesday, April 27th: First Communion Practice from 3:00-4:30 PM in the Church. This is for the First Holy
Communion on Saturday, April 30th, at 11:30 AM.
In Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Mercy Prayer he states, “Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of
us, the words you (Jesus) spoke to the Samaritan woman: ‘If you knew the gift of God!’”. Jesus
was revealing to this woman that His presence in her life, His personal conversation with her, was
a great gift of God. Sometimes we forget how each one of us is uniquely blessed by our union
with Jesus in prayer and in the sacraments.
Please pray that each child receiving First Holy Communion experiences Jesus’ presence in
Holy Communion as a great gift of God.
Please pray that each Confirmation candidate feels the power of God’s Holy Spirit anointing
him/her and revealing in a clearer way, Jesus’ presence in Holy Communion. We thank you Lord
Jesus for being our great gift of God who loves us and calls us always into deeper union.
Adult Faith Formation

Jubilee Year of Mercy
THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE is a documentary which advertises itself this way: “In a world
fraught with hostility and violence, an altruistic group of young men endeavor to understand the
true essence of the human spirit by visiting forgotten souls such as homeless New Yorkers, Peruvian
orphans and isolated Ghanaian lepers. By spotlighting heartwarming stories from around the
world, this uplifting documentary shows viewers that every single person, no matter his or her lot
in life, is beautiful. Gorgeously filmed and masterfully narrated, THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE
explores with depth and compassion what it means to be a human being.”
A copy of this documentary is available in the Parish Office for parishioners to borrow. Please
borrow it only when you are ready to watch, so that you return it in a timely way for others.

Elementary School Father-Daughter Dance Fun
Saint Mary’s Elementary School had its third annual Father-Daughter Dance on Friday, March 4 in the parish Marian Room. The
girls could be escorted by any male figure in their lives, so in addition to fathers there were brothers, uncles and grandfathers in
attendance. More than 140 people, an unprecedented number, turned out for the dance. Everyone had fun dressing up, dancing,
eating, socializing and enjoying some quality father-daughter time. In addition to the music and dancing, families made and brought
cupcakes, brownies and other snacks for everyone to enjoy, there was a photo op booth and each family received a picture and
frame to commemorate the night. St. Mary’s parents, Mrs. Adriana Calosso-Breen and Mrs. Angela Galante chaired the event. Mrs.
Galante, an art teacher at Hicksville High School, made all the dance décor. The evening came to a close with a slow dance to the
song “Daddy’s Little Girl” – there wasn’t a dry eye in the room! It was a night to remember and everyone looks forward to doing it
again next year.
St. Mary’s High School Supports the Pulsera Project
During the first two weeks of April, students at Saint Mary’s High
School could be seen selling, buying and wearing beautifully
unique and colorful handwoven bracelets, called pulseras. It
was part of the Pulsera Project, which was brought to St. Mary’s
by members of the Italian and Spanish Honor Societies. Each
pulsera, which are hand made in Nicaragua, is unique in color
and design, and the sale of the bracelets by students in schools
around the United States provides these men and women who
make them with fair trade work, the ability to earn a decent wage
and also afford higher education. Each pulsera comes with a tag
with the picture and handwritten name of the person who made
it, helping to make that human connection in the buying and
selling of these bracelets.
Carlo Puca, a St. Mary’s Italian teacher and moderator of the
Italian Honor Society, noted that “part of the requirements for
the language honor societies is to do at least one charitable drive
a year to help Spanish and Italian-language communities.” He
explained that Margherita Haldenwang, a Spanish teacher and
moderator of the Spanish Honor Society, found the Pulsera
Project, which “is very much in line with one of the purposes
of the societies, which is to build strong ties between people of
diverse ethnic origins and religions.” In addition, bringing the
project to St. Mary’s enabled the students to put into action the
Gospel values they are taught in the classroom and encouraged
to live out in their daily lives. “One of the Gospel values at
work here is the Dignity of Work,” said Mr. Puca – the sale of
the pulseras enables the Nicaraguans to make an honest living
and a decent wage and not have to depend on the sweatshop
jobs prevalent in the area, where people work 15 hours a day,
seven days a week in very poor conditions and for very low pay.
“Another Gospel value in play is Solidarity,” Mr. Puca noted, “as
many communities around the world come together to help this
cause.” The students in both language honor societies, under
the guidance of Mr. Puca and Mrs. Haldenwang, promoted the
cause throughout St. Mary’s by making and posting flyers as well
as dedicating their lunch times to sell the bracelets. “A lot of the
members also went further and were able to sell some bracelets
in their own home communities,” he added, “which only spreads
the message to more people.”

Sisters of Life Retreats — Hope and Healing After Abortion
“Go, pick up the pieces lest they be lost.” (Jn 6:12) With these words, John Cardinal O’Connor
directed the Sisters of Life to a ministry of reconciliation and reverence for women and men who
suffer following the tragedy of abortion. Since 1996, they have heeded that call and with the help of
Theresa Bonopartis to develop a work of retreats and accompaniment. They have met countless men
and women on their journey of healing. There are still millions who, too often, suffer the spiritual and emotional effects
of abortion silently and alone.
We were not made to be alone.
Standing in solidarity with those who are suffering, the Sisters journey with women through accompaniment and
retreats.
Accompaniment:
The Sisters believe that God has a unique and beautiful plan of healing for each woman who contacts them. Many who
are suffering alone experience great peace and healing as they are able share their burdens with another. The Sisters are
available to meet with women individually in person or over the phone as they walk through the journey of healing.
Accompaniment may be a single phone call or ongoing meetings and conversations.
Retreats:
The Sisters host monthly Days of Prayer and Healing, monthly Gatherings, and Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats.
These events are opportunities to experience the loving mercy of God in a safe and sacred space.
All retreats are led by the Sisters of Life and women who have experienced both the suffering of abortion and the joy of
healing in Christ. The retreats are directed by faithful priests who have a sensitivity and a heart for those who suffer. They
include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass.

Second Collection Next Weekend
for Catholic Elementary Schools
The second collection on April 30th and May 1st is
in support of St. Mary’s Elementary School and the
Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation. Tomorrow’s Hope
provides tuition assistance to students in need attending
Catholic elementary schools and grants directly to
schools to offset general expenses. Last year the
Foundation gave over $1.75 million to students while
actual student need was over $6 million.
Our Elementary School has many needs. Tuition, parish
subsidy and fundraising all help to balance the budget.
Each year, however, new technologies and curricular
needs arise. The money that you give to the second
collection on April 30th and May 1st helps to expand
the school’s academic excellence and helps it remain a
place where our faith is taught and lived.
Sustaining Catholic elementary education is vital to the
future of our society and our Church. Our students
are our future. They are tomorrow’s hope. Please be as
generous as possible with your donation on April 30th
and May 1st.
