Sometimes it may seem that the word love becomes so overused that the profoundness of its significance can be lost to us. Even what love is can be drowned out by the varied meanings we give to it. But here is St. Paul spelling out pretty clearly what love is in the context of faith. Love is not a warm fuzzy feeling but rather a dynamic power that calls us to action. St. Paul tells us that love is working for what is right. It is a force that doesn’t take pleasure in the failings of others but works for righteousness. It doesn’t cut down but builds up. Love can be described as wanting and willing what is truly best for another human being. Easier said than done for most of us, I think. Yet that is what is expected of us. So how do we take these profound thoughts of St. Paul and make them more than mere words but a force by which we live? We look to the Old Testament today and the prophet Jeremiah is commanded by God to “brace yourself for action. Stand up and speak the truth.” Love, as described by St. Paul, is the power by which we have the strength and knowledge to bear truth and hope to a wanting world. Like Jeremiah, we may at times lose hope but God gives us His promise that even though people may “fight against us,” if we remain in the truth, “they will never overcome us.” We know that work for justice so often goes unrewarded. At times it may feel like it falls on deaf ears. Added to that is the difficulty of speaking the truth to the people we know. As we hear in the Gospel, “no prophet is accepted in his own country (town).” How often have we felt ineffectual in speaking about Jesus to our own families or friends? They may pick out our faults or failings and use that as the premise to ignore our words. But again, that should not let us lose heart...we have been given a pledge and promise from Jesus to remain faithful and not to lose heart. All is accomplished in God’s time, not our own. So our job is to continue to live and preach as we have been commanded. It is in that faithfulness that springs out of our desire for all to know Jesus that love is truly found and lived. That is all that is expected of us. . . to remain faithful to what has been entrusted to us. Difficult, yes, but surely possible in the power of Jesus. The power by which we should live this is outlined in the attribute of Mercy as called for by Our Holy Father Pope Francis in this Year of Mercy. Compassion and love springs forth as the power of God. Read St. Paul’s letter and learn the power of love unrewarded. Last week I announced the beginning of a Religious Education Board. Today I would like to inform you that I have begun a Strategic Planning Committee. The focus of this committee is to assist me in future planning for the life of our parish. Strategic Planning will look at the demographics, spiritual needs and growth of our parish. I am grateful to the Committee members who share this ministry with me: John Bernic, Frank De Lucia, Marc de Venoge, Brian Dunning, Rich Im, Ronald Joe, Valery Rodi and Muffin Sauvigne. In Jesus, Fr. Bob The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 31, 2016 Stewards of God’s Gifts Jeremiah declares that the Lord knew him before he was born and dedicated and appointed him to his role as prophet even before he drew breath. We too, are known and sent by the Lord. What deeds of love and service are mine to perform? We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who practice a spiritual work of mercy by having Masses said for departed friends and loved ones, praying for the living and the dead. Church of Saint Mary | 8 The Schools of Saint Mary Celebrating Winnie the Pooh Day Ms. Orgera’s first grade class recently participated in Winnie the Pooh Day, the official holiday that celebrates the beloved main character created by author AA Milne in 1926. The annual event in many libraries and schools across the country is held on January 18. The date was chosen because it is Milne’s birthday. At St. Mary’s, the first grade students commemorated the day by hosting members of the Pre-K for a reading buddy activity. Valentines for Vets St. Mary’s High School students are continually reaching beyond the school community to assist those in need. This year, members of the student body have once again stepped up to participate in a special program called Valentines for Vets. The program, launched nine years ago by Assemblywoman Michele Schimel, is a district wide effort to show our local veterans who have served our country have not been forgotten. The students collected personal care items and clothing, and under the guidance of Mrs. Anita Didora from the Social Studies Department the items were packaged and delivered this week to Assemblywoman Schimel’s office in Great Neck. Once the program is finished, the various items along with handmade Valentines are delivered to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook and the Northport VA Medical Center. 9 th AN NIVER SARY SAINT MARY’S ELE MENTA RY SCHO OL SAINT MARY’S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES 90 YEARS How many people do you know have attended Saint Mary’s Elementary School?
