A Message to Our Community
Thank you for supporting Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital!
Your donations have helped thousands of people to get the health care they deserve.
We are proud to acknowledge the tremendous contribution of community members and
volunteers who continue to demonstrate strong passion and commitment to the work of SMGH
Foundation.
As valued donors, your support directly impacts the quality of life for everyone who seeks care at
SMGH. We are grateful to you and the thousands of individuals, corporations, partners, service
clubs and associations, who chose SMGH Foundation as the place to make their charitable
investment in support of health care in our region.
Your generous Spirit of Giving ensures that SMGH’s medical staff have access to critical
resources, the most technologically advanced equipment, and state-of-the-art facilities, in order
to provide timely, accurate diagnoses, and excellent patient care.
In 2007-08, just over $2.6 million was funded to SMGH in support of patient care needs. Most
notably, SMGH Foundation worked together with Four Counties Health Services Foundation to
raise $2.5 million for a CT scanner and new diagnostic imaging equipment.
Recently, SMGH Foundation’s Board of Directors engaged in an updated strategic planning
process to ensure a strong and sustainable organization well into the future. The Foundation will
celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. In celebrating past achievements and looking to the
future, we will continue to focus on projects that best support the changing health care needs of
residents in our region.
SMGH Foundation’s growth depends on maintaining a solid fiscal management and careful
stewardship of the philanthropic support that you entrust to us. On behalf of the Foundation, and
all those whose lives are touched by your kindness, thank you.
With sincere gratitude,
Edward Stevens Chairperson

What We Do
SMGH Foundation raises funds and dedicates
its resources to support the Hospital in
partnership with our donors.
By accepting donations, we promise that
your gifts are managed and invested wisely,
ensuring a healthy future for the community.
The Foundation’s first priority is to fund patient
care equipment as itemized on the Hospital’s
approved capital equipment list. Occasionally, the Foundation also funds renovations
and improvements to the Hospital. In addition,
funds are provided for physician and staff
education and training.
Guided by a dedicated volunteer Board of
Directors, the Foundation is recognized by
Revenue Canada as a charity, and as such is
able to issue tax receipts for charitable contributions made in support of the Hospital’s
lifesaving work.

Your Donations at Work
As a result of the generosity of donors, patients at SMGH can receive quicker diagnosis and
treatment with new equipment that helps the Hospital’s medical team to provide timely and
enhanced care.
Listed in the next few pages are just some of the pieces of equipment the Foundation was able to
help fund with your donations in 2007.
“We are so grateful for the
speedy diagnosis of John’s brain
tumor by Strathroy Hospital’s excellent medical staff. His exam,
CT scan, referrals and surgery
all took place within a week,
maximizing John’s chances for
recovery.”
-Marsha and John Davidson of Strathroy, Ontario
Physicians at SMGH now have a revolutionary new tool
to help diagnose life-threatening illness, disease
and traumatic injury, all because of generous donations.
SMGH Foundation and Four Counties Health Services
Foundation jointly fundraised for this important technology
to serve patients of the Middlesex Hospital Alliance.
The new 64-slice computed tomography scanner
called LightSpeed VCT allows doctors to see internal
structures in the human body by creating high-resolution
anatomical images. When these images are combined,
doctors can see and analyze
three dimensional images of the patient’s body. These images can
be sent digitally to other hospital centres through the Picture Archival
and Communication System (PACS) so that a Radiologist, Specialist or
Surgeon at another hospital centre can assist in making a
diagnosis.
In October 2007, the successful
Images of Excellence Gala dinner
& silent auction was held at the
Caradoc Community Centre in Mt.
Brydges.

Your Donations at Work
New Digital Mammography and Ultrasound Machines
were purchased for the Diagnostic Imaging Department as
part of the CT Scanner Campaign.
Mammograms are used as a screening tool to detect and
diagnose breast cancer in women. Mammography plays a
central part in early detection of breast cancer because overtime it can show changes in the breast.
In October 2007, the Community Health Promotion Committee
of the Middlesex Hospital Alliance held a successful “Busting
Out” Breast Cancer Awareness event that raised over $700
in support of the Mary Trudell Fund for Breast Cancer
Awareness.
The new Ultrasound
Machines work by
emitting ultrasound
waves similar to sonar
that pass through
the body and result
in identifying an
image of an organ.
An ultrasound can aid
in an examination of
the chest, abdomen,
blood vessels, and the
evaluation of pregnancy.

“Having the new portable ultrasound system makes a great
difference when it comes to how quickly you can diagnose and
begin treatment in the Emergency Room.” -Dr. Ganesh Ram, Emergency Room Physician
New Portable Ultrasound in SMGH Emergency Room - An
emergency physician can now view images of a beating heart,
developing fetus, or suspected internal bleeding in a trauma
situation. The portable ultrasound machine is dedicated specifically
for the SMGH Emergency Department, ready for physicians to help
find the right treatment and care in an urgent situation.

Future Directions
Many donors and community
members continue to demonstrate a strong
passion and commitment to the work of the
Foundation.
This generous Spirit of Giving and Culture of
Philanthropy ensures that SMGH Foundation
will continue to be a strong and viable organization well into the future.
Because of donors, we are able to continue to
provide funds so that SMGH’s medical staff
has access to critical resources ― the most
technologically advanced equipment and
state-of-the-art-facilities, in order to provide
timely, accurate diagnoses and excellent patient care.
2007/08
SMGH Foundation Volunteer Board of Directors
As we look forward to celebrating the
Foundation’s 20th anniversary in 2009, we will
face new challenges as we continue to support
the growing patient care needs at our local
Hospital.
The Foundation would not have been able to
achieve the success in its fund raising and
community relations without the guidance
provided by the volunteer Board of Directors
and the support of our Volunteers and Staff.
Thank you for supporting SMGH Foundation by
making a charitable investment in support of
health care in our region, helping us to “enhance and improve patient care at SMGH.”
