3M Telecommunications Solutions for Networks 3M™ Volition™ 10Gigabit Fiber Cabling System 3 3M™ Volition™ 10Gigabit Fiber Cabling System Gigabit Ethernet is already deployed to each desk and it is critical to prepare for the explosion of backbone bandwidth. To avoid the potential for the backbone bottlenecks where the convergence is inevitable for voice and video over IP, at least ten times more bandwidth is required to ensure higher performance and solid backbone bandwidth reliability. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard was ratified in 2002 as IEEE Std 802.3ae-2002 and is the fastest of the Ethernet standards. It defines a version of Ethernet with a nominal data rate of 10 Gbit/s, ten times as fast as Gigabit Ethernet. There are two classifications for optical fiber which are singlemode (SMF) and multi-mode (MMF). In SMF, light follows a single path through the fiber while in MMF, it takes multiple paths resulting in differential mode delay. SMF is used for long distance communication and MMF is used for distances of less than 300 m. SMF has a narrower core (8.3 µm) which makes connecting fibers more difficult. MMF has a wider core (50 or 62.5 µm) and is more expensive than SMF. The advantage of MMF for short distances is that because of its wider core it can be driven by lower cost lasers and its connectors are cheaper and more reliable. Its disadvantage is that due to DMD, it can work only over short distances and 10Gigbit Ethernet can reach between 26 meters and 82meters with conventional multimode fiber. It is not suitable for general premise cabling for 10Gigabit transmission. Latest 10Gigabit per second fiber technologies New structured cabling installations use OM3 50 µm MMF which has no center defect. OM3 cable can carry 10Gigabit Ethernet 300 meters using low cost 10GBASE-SR. New 50μm 2000 MHz·km OM3 multi-mode fiber, it has a transmission range of 10gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters. The transmitter can be implemented with a VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) which is low cost and low power. MMF has the advantage of having lower cost connectors than SMF because of its wider core. OM3 is now the preferred choice for structured optical cabling within buildings. Volition 10Giga fiber solution Volition 10Giga fiber solution includes horizontal and backbone cable with OM3 50/125 µm multimode and 9/125 µm singlemode fibre as part of the system. The optical link could be designed with innovative 3M field mount connector. 3M SC NPC and LC NPC connector is tested for Premises and FTTP applications for indoor and outdoor locations and is available in SM and 50 µm LOMMF(laser optimized multimode fiber) for 10 Gigabit applications. LC connector saves space and provides simple administration by dramatically reducing rack and floor space requirement. The SC/LC compatible connector consists of a factorypolished ceramic ferrule, fiber stub and a mechanical splice that is installed with a simple field tool. A bell-shaped boot is attached to the connector body, minimizing the chance of losing or forgetting to install the boot during the connection. OM3 laser optimized multimode fiber achieve 10Gb/s serial transmission at 850nm at distances up to 300meters which is enough to wire in a building. The horizontal cable provides the physical link between the fibre connector patch panel in the floor distributor and the fiber connector in the outlet. Both Unitube and tight buffer fibre cables are available and the cable jacket can be LSOH, PVC OFNR (Riser rated) or PE for outdoor. The Fiber Patch Cords are designed at the factory to meet worldwide specifications. The Patch cords are an integral part of our optical system and manufactured and tested in our factory. They ensure the correct performance of the connection point and of the optical link. The jacket of the cable can be made of PVC or LSOH for different applications. The patch cords are available with SC, LC connectors with OM3 or single mode cable for 10G application. The patch panel is available in both 24-ports and 48 ports in 1U versions.
