President`s Perspective - Original Dulcimer Players Club Home
President’s Perspective Every year as we work to prepare for the festival, we are also planning for the future. The leadership of this club has a vision moving forward of where we want to be in five or ten years and beyond. We make provisions for the longevity of the club and festival, while continuing to keep an eye on the past, the traditions that make FunFest so special. As we approach yet another election, we look to find people with a fresh outlook, who are willing to spend the time and effort it takes to keep us on track with this vision of keeping this festival relevant for years to come. If this is something you feel fits you, please consider volunteering to run for office, contribute your talents in some other capacity and/or volunteer to work at the gates or the ODPC Office during the FunFest. con’t on p. 9 Great New Shirt Design for 2015 Shirts will be a hot seller this year at the ODPC Funfest! The new design, created by member and graphic designer Katie Moritz, has something that will appeal to everyone. Shirts will be available in a variety of colors and sizes and will be sold on Friday and Saturday from 12-9 p.m. When they are sold out, there will be no more available. If you want one, shop early! Only a limited number will be available. If you don’t want to be disappointed, don’t wait long to buy yours! New Membership Plan by Gail Perna At the May 2 meeting, the board approved part of a plan it was given for review in February. This plan will help to shift the burden of expenses of running the ODPC from a portion of its membership to be shared by everyone who enjoys the ODPC-sponsored FunFest. To accomplish this, the board voted to increase the cost of festival attendance from $5 to $7. For loyal members this will mean a drop in festival costs, because no additional dues will be charged. Every person who comes to the festival will pay $7 for admission, and every person who pays admission can go to the office with an admission ribbon by 5:00 on Saturday to register as a member. Dues are included in the con’t on p. 2 In This Issue.... Check out this awesome shirt design by ODPC member Katie Moritz! Get your own at the festival! One of the benefits of removing a separate payment for dues, and shifting the financial basis of the club to admissions, will be the removal of the password from the web site. For members who read the newsletter online, there will be a decrease in admission and dues from $10 last year to $7 this year. For couples who paid $15 last year for 2 admissions and a family membership, the cost will now be $14. Members who want to receive a printed newsletter by mail will now pay a subscription fee of $5, the same amount they previously paid for dues. This will help to cover the $6 it costs the ODPC to provide one newsletter subscription for a year. There are some who join or renew their memberships who do not attend Funfest. They will still pay $5 in dues. Those not attending FunFest who previously received their newsletters by mail will continue to do so at no additional charge. However, new members who wish to receive a mailed newsletter will need to pay an additional $5 for a subscription. There will be no more family memberships. Each membership is individual and includes one vote in an election. Each person who wishes to enjoy the privileges of membership will need to register that membership at the ODPC Office during FunFest. All members who wish to sell up to two used instruments during the festival, or who want to enter the dulcimer drawing held on Saturday night of festival, must be registered members. If you’ve already paid dues for 2015 and beyond, you can get a refund of those dues by going to the ODPC Office during festival office hours. Page 2 Register Your Membership at the Festival This Year! by Gail Perna You will be pleasantly surprised when you go to the ODPC Office to renew your membership. If you show your admission ribbon to the office worker, you will not have to pay a $5 renewal fee. Everyone who goes to the festival can become an ODPC member and will be given a membership card, if the person goes to the ODPC Office before 5:00 on Saturday. If you currently receive your newsletter by mail, you will need to pay $5 for a subscription to continue to receive a mailed version. If you want to renew your membership but do not attend FunFest, you can do so by mailing $5 in dues to the ODPC treasurer, Peg Earl. Her address is shown on the last page of the newsletter. New ODPC Internet Sites! Check them out! by Gail Perna The ODPC has established a brand new FunFest website and a new club website. Publicity Chair Scott Freeman has created a new FunFest web site which you can view at: www.evartdulcimerfest.org. Scott has done an amazing job in representing the ODPC on the Internet. Be sure to check it out! Scott has also updated the ODPC Facebook page, and he frequently adds new photos and information. If you have a Facebook account, just search for Original Dulcimer Players Club and “Like” the page. You will receive Scott’s ODPC Facebook posts on your newsfeed. In addition, Secretary Sue Crandle has completed work on an ODPC club web site for newsletters and other club documents. That web site can be found at www.originaldulcimerplayers.org. The ODPC Board wishes to thank Sharon Skaryd for generously giving her time and web space to the ODPC and its festival. We have all visited Sharon’s web site at www.dulcimers.com. Sharon will continue to link to the club’s new sites from her own web site. June 2015 ODPC FunFest Vendors for 2015 by Jim Rathbun We have an exciting line up of vendors this year. This applies only to those paying for sites from July 1519. Everyone on the fairgrounds during the festival is required to wear an admission ribbon. Those who are interested in helping with ribbon pinning should come to the Community Room Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Page 3 Stage Show Decorum People were very considerate last year during the stage shows when making purchases at the CD sales area! Thank you for this courtesy, especially for those who happened to be sitting close by. And, thanks also from those performers on stage who appreciate your respectful behavior. There is one area where improvement would be helpful. Please stay clear of the backstage area, and sides of the stage, throughout the shows. If you want to meet with a performer, wait until the show is over. If you are a performer, please do not arrive too early or stay backstage once you have finished. It is a small area, and it is distracting to audiences when you stay too long backstage or when some carry on conversations in the field area alongside the stage. Thank you in advance for thinking of others! Featured Tune: Nutfactory Shuffle This month’s tune comes to us from a suggestion from President Kathy Rayman. She heard it while jamming out of state, and thought our members would enjoy it. Rumor has it that the composer was inspired by a trip to the mall with his family. He was sitting outside a small nut shop located inside the mall observing people “shuffle” in and out of the shop. We hope you enjoy it! June 2015 Page 4 May Board Meeting Notes By Gail Perna The ODPC Board met on May 2 in Ray, MI. The meeting began at 11 a.m. After approval of corrected minutes from last October, President Kathy Rayman had three items of business for the board. The first two proposals asked the board to authorize the creation of two ODPC-owned and controlled web sites. One site for Funfest is to be maintained by Publicity Chair Scott Freeman. The address for that site is www.evartdulcimerfest.org. A second site will be created by Secretary Sue Crandle for ODPC club business, where members can go to access newsletters, club bylaws and policy manuals, as well as other club documents, minutes and contacts. (That site is found at www.originaldulcimerplayers.org.) The third proposal asked for annual funding for the FunFest site that is now online. Vice President Gail Perna brought several proposals to update club policy manuals. Following the board’s first electronic meeting in January, some procedural points were added to the board’s electronic meeting policy, to clarify processes for holding electronic meetings. A few changes were also added to the Jam Coordinator page as requested by Freeman Gilmore. To the FunFest Manual, job descriptions were added for Scott Freeman, who has taken the positions of Publicity Chair and Stage Manager, formerly Stage Set-Up Chair. Gail also brought a recommendation to remove agenda order from the bylaws so that a more practical agenda template can be added to the board’s policy manual. All revisions and proposals passed. A bylaws revision request will be added to the September ballot. Gail then brought to the board a new membership plan that had first been given to board members in February. She brought a request to raise admission for FunFest to $7 and to remove the additional $5 for dues that members used to pay to renew each July. This would accomplish several things: to solve inequities in how ODPC expenses are financed, to reward loyal members who have covered these expenses for many years by reducing their combined FunFest/dues costs, to more fairly pay the costs of printed newsletters by those who receive them, to encourage more new people to join the ODPC, to allow for 1 vote per paid membership instead of couples receiving 2 votes per paid membership, and to establish a dedicated fund with new money to save for the eventuality of renting or procuring a new stage, since we are currently borrowing a stage from the Indiana Fiddlers’ Association. Some board members were hesitant to start a dedicated fund for a stage without having more information on what that stage would be. So, that portion of the motion was removed while the provision to raise admission to $7, which includes dues, was passed. When Stage Manager Scott Freeman feels it is time to move forward, he will bring a recommendation with supporting information to the board so that a stage decision can be made. Treasurer Peg Earl submitted a report that included a balance of $36,035.47. The FunFest portion of the meeting began with Festival Manager Kathy Rayman asking for money to cover camping fees for some officers and chairs who work throughout the festival. This was approved. Stage Show Chair Gail Perna presented a proposal for Sound Chair Andy Cox who could not be there. Andy has been working to correct some sound dead spots reported by audience members and performers. The current sound system was designed for smaller crowds, and now that our audiences have grown, additional equipment is needed to solve the problem. The board approved funds to purchase the new sound equipment for the stage. It also authorized funding to replace 8-10 microphones for use in workshops. Gail also presented the 2015 stage show line ups. She asked for input from the board regarding a request by an invited performer to play in two full sets on stage. The board felt that, while it was fine for a performer to play a couple songs during another performer’s set, it was not good to have any invited performer to play for two full performance sets. Following a few member comments, the meeting adjourned shortly after 12:30. June 2015 Page 5 FunFest Workshops for 2015 by Sharon Skaryd, Workshop Chairman (20th year!) Every year we’re at the mercy of our wonderful volunteer instructors to provide us with a diverse array of classes. 2015 is no exception. As workshop chairman, I schedule the line-up from those that are generously submitted by our fantastic teachers. This year there were so many submissions that I had a tough time squeezing them into the slots in the eight workshop areas. (Workshops start at 9:00 and are to end at 5:00.) This year, for the first time, we’re using part of the Community Building almost full time so we have nine areas. We’ll offer well over 200 classes! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed unless you are hoping to learn to play the bodhran because this year no bodhran player stepped forward to teach, and I don’t know where I’d have slipped them in, if someone had. We will have classes teaching hammered dulcimer, and also piano, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, banjo, dobro, autoharp, ukulele, fiddle, clogging, contra dancing, penny whistle, harp, Native American flute, bass guitar, bowed psaltery, voice, hurdy gurdy, music skills (including composing, earning money from your music, setting up a band) and even classes helping you use your iPad to help you make music. What a lineup! You can print out the complete workshop program from the on-line site and I urge you to do so. If you pick up a copy of the program at the festival, please cherish it and only get one copy. (They are a big expense so we bring a limited number to the festival.) The program is available at: http://evartdulcimerfest.org/workshops.html We hope you learn new skills at the festival and come away with an abundance of enthusiasm! Dulcimer Drawing Each year, member David Lindsey donates a beautiful hammered dulcimer to be given to an ODPC member. Thank you so much to David for his generosity and loyalty to the club! When you register your membership at the ODPC Office, you will be given an entry form for the drawing which will be held at 6:50, prior to the 7:00 start of the Saturday night stage show. You must be present to win! Thank You, Sharon! Thank you for your 20 years of volunteer service to the ODPC! Sharon is planning to retire from her post as Workshop Chairman. Please see the “President’s Perspective” for more details. June 2015 Page 6 Hammered Dulcimer Pre-Show Chair Changes Hammered Dulcimer Pre-Show Many thanks go to Hammered Dulcimer Pre-Show Chair, Pennye Scheiber. She has graciously served the ODPC and FunFest for a number of years, running the practices and leading the large number of musicians who perform in the hammered dulcimer group stage performance held at FunFest. Pennye will not be able to attend FunFest this year, and thus had to retire. We hope you can join us at the ODPC hammered dulcimer pre-show on Saturday, July 18, just before the main concert starts! Everyone is welcome, from beginners to advanced players. by Gail Perna We are delighted that Peggy Peryam will be stepping up to fill the position. Peggy is from Central Illinois, where she teaches in a public school, as well as giving private lessons. She plays numerous instruments, has played hammered dulcimer for many years, and really enjoys conducting and drawing groups of musicians together. Welcome Peggy, and thanks for volunteering! by Peggy Peryam Please arrive with your instrument at about 5:45 P.M. Saturday to set up IN FRONT OF THE STAGE and we will begin at 6:15 pm. If you haven’t worked on the tunes, now is a good time to start. All tunes are typical hammered dulcimer tunes, and the new one, “Kiowa Special” (published in January ODPC newsletter), is fairly easy. It will be played ABABABA. There will be two practice sessions: Wednesday, July 15 at 1 p.m., and Saturday, July 18 at noon, both in the Swine Barn. PDF sheet music for all the preshow tunes can be found on the festival website at http://www.evartdulcimerfest.org/pretunes.html. 2015 Pre-Show Tune List Down Yonder (3x G w/tag) Reminisce (2x G) Five Foot Two (3x C w/tag) Prairie Flower (G) Kiowa Special (D) Red Apple Rag (3x G) Soldier’s Joy (3x D) 2015 FunFest Stage Show Line Up Thursday, July 16, 7:00 (Thornapple Valley at 6:15, Silver Strings at 6:40) *Live from the Squirrels’ Nest *Carry It On *Nate Pultorak *February Sky *Ilace Mears *Tyler Roy *Ethan Setiawan *Jon Weinberg *Linda Sniedze Taggart *Katie Moritz Friday, July 17, 7:00 (Mountain dulcimers at 6:30) *Annette and David Lindsey *Sonas with DeeDee Tibbits *Sarah Morgan *Timothy Seaman *Larry Unger *Ted Yoder *Randy Clepper *Andy Young *Craig Wagner *Stephen Seifert *Scott Freeman *Bing Futch Saturday, July 18, 7:00 (Hammered dulcimers at 6:15) *Bill Robinson & Friends *Karen Alley – 2014 Winfield National Champion *Pam Bowman *Stephen Humphries *Guy and Sharrie George *Jess Dickinson *Mark Alan Wade *Steve and Ruth Smith *Sam Rizzetta *Rick Thum *Dan Landrum June 2015 Page 7 Join Us at the Pre-Festival Cart Parade Stage Manager by Lynn Gehringer Scott Freeman has been appointed to serve as the new stage manager, as well as the FunFest publicity chair. Scott brings the stage that we borrow from the Indiana Fiddlers’ Association. Scott will be responsible for the set up and take down of that stage, and all equipment that is placed on or near it. He welcomes all volunteers willing to help with the set up on Wednesday and the take down on Saturday at the end of the stage show. Thank you, Scott, for filling this very important role in the success of our shows. Thank you too, to Rex LaLonde who has served in the past as the stage set up chair. Rex is a very hard worker, and his efforts have been much appreciated! It is time to be thinking about the 2015 Evart Pre-Festival Cart Parade. How will you be decorating your cart this year? In fact, you do not even have to have a cart to join us. Strolling musicians, dancers, anything you want... you are all welcome! Join us for the fun. This will take place on Wednesday, July 15. We will line up at the ODPC pavilion at 4:45 p.m, so we can start the parade promptly at 5:00 p.m. We will use the same route as in the past. Though all entries are appreciated and loved, we will have ribbons in six categories, which will be: 1. Best representation of the hammered dulcimer. 2. Best holiday display (any holiday). 3. Best musical entry. 4. Weirdest entry. 5. Best in Show - Golf Cart 6. Best in Show - Non-Golf Cart. Please keep your fingers crossed for good weather and join in the fun! Lawn Chairs Many audience members like to set up chairs in front of the stage early in the day for an evening show. Each night, however, we have clubs and mountain and hammered dulcimer groups who need that space for their pre-show performances. Last year we had some traffic concerns for players, instruments, and chairs. So, this year there will be barricades placed to block off the area in front of the stage. Please do not place chairs in this area; they will be moved. If you want to use a lawn chair during the stage show, the area will be open at 6:55 for you to set up chairs. ODPC FunFest Office Needs Volunteers If you are thinking about volunteering at this year’s FunFest, maybe the ODPC Membership Office is the place for you to help out. It’s an easy and fun place to work, checking and renewing memberships, getting to meet lots of members. If you are interested in helping out or have any questions you can email at: rpeka@yahoo. com Thanks, from Mary Peka, the ODPC Office Manager Volunteer at the Gate! by Gwyn Besner, Gates Chair Your help is always welcome helping to sell and check ribbons at the fairgrounds gates! Bill and I are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new again this year. By popular demand, time slots will be on the hour: 8 -10 a.m., etc. We will be at the Fairgrounds on July 10. If you are coming later and want to email me at [email protected], I’d be happy to add your name to the drywipe board. Do not contact me before that date, please. The drywipe board will be in Fair Office until the festival starts, and then will move to the ODPC office. In order to have fewer errors, we are only going to have the one schedule. Hugs and Kisses! June 2015 Page 8 Great Scenery AND an ODPC-Sponsored Jam! Come jam and enjoy spectacular upper peninsula scenery and fall color on your way! Kathleene Falls is hosting an ODPC-sponsored all-day jam at the Iron Mountain Senior Citizen Center on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The Senior Center is located at 700 Crystal Lake Blvd., Iron Mountain, MI 49801 See the fall color in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Even many residents have never seen this part of the state. Here is an opportunity to see upper Michigan in vibrant color and take in a jam. Also, this is one week before the ODPC board meeting (and jam) in Evart on October 3. Some folks might enjoy more time “Up North” and could take in both jams! Kathy is the only dulcimer player and looking for support. "It would be a great way to introduce hammered dulcimer to all the local musicians." The jam would run all day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. central time, with a break for lunch and dinner, and be combined with her regular jam that goes from 1-4 p.m. If you want to see a short video of their jam, check out the Iron Mountain Senior Center page on Facebook. Econo Lodge (1609 S. Stephenson Ave., Iron Mountain, Mi. 49801, newly renovated) has continental breakfast, pool, flat screens in every room with micro and fridge, and a special rate of $50 per night. Contact Paula Wiegle at 906-396-0135 (cell). The next-door restaurant, the Holiday Kitchen, will give you 20% off if you show them your room key from Econo Lodge. A large grocery store is across the highway if you want to buy your own food and dine in your room. Summer Breeze Campground (summerbreezecampground.com) is about ten minutes from town. Their rates and info are on their website. Duval's Lakeside Resort (906-774-1689) has cabins right on the lake. They do not have camping. States Kathy: "There is the Iron Mountain with a scenic vista viewing platform at the top where you can view the entire city, a city park with deer in an enclosure with an albino deer, several mining museums, Fumee Nature Preserve with hiking trails, lots of restaurants from pasties to brats and burgers, lots of northern Italian cuisine, and many pizza places. And, of course, that time of year we have breathtaking fall color and fresh air. And the senior center is right on beautiful Crystal Lake. Since we are right on the border of Wisconsin, separated by the beautiful Menominee River, we also get great cheese." She would like feed back as to those that may go and those that plan to go. Please put "ODPC color" in the subject line. Send to: [email protected] AND [email protected]. Kathy can be reached at 906-8281825 if you have questions. June 2015 Page 9 President’s Perspective Bylaws Change Sharon Skaryd has been one of those team members who, for many years, contributed to the club in this fashion. She has given of her time and talents in so many ways, especially in the position of workshop leader, planning, organizing and implementing the workshops so many enjoy. Sharon has filled this position for twenty years! It has been an amazing gift so generously given to this club and this festival. In the fall, you will be asked to vote on a change to the ODPC Bylaws. This proposal was approved by the board at its May 2 meeting. In Article III, Section 7, Item A, the standard Robert’s Rules agenda order is listed. con’t from p. 1 In recent years, Sharon has expressed an interest in retiring from this time-consuming responsibility. Each year I have talked with her about this. I hoped she would stay, but I knew the time would come when she was ready to make that decision. The time came this week, when Sharon let me know that this will be her last festival for running the workshops. Wow! Knowing that I needed to plan for it still did not prepare me for the depth of feeling I had, not only that Sharon would be giving up the position, but also that I would have to try to replace such a critical member of the ODPC and FunFest team. While it will be difficult to fill her shoes, I am confident that we have found the right person to assume this huge responsibility. Sue Crandle had offered to take this job a few years ago when Sharon was first considering retiring from it, and Sue still wishes to do so. Sue’s strengths lie in her organizational skills, her attention to detail, planning and preparation, and her advanced computer skills so important in this position. She will do a wonderful job for FunFest festival goers and workshop leaders! So, Sharon, your dedication and support will be personally and collectively missed. You have set high standards, and we, with Sue’s leadership, want to continue with those high standards. From all of us on the ODPC Board and the FunFest team, we wish to give you a huge thank you! Sincerely, Kathy Rayman, O.D.P.C. President Fall Election In addition to the request for a bylaws change, the fall election will include voting on three positions for ODPC board trustee seats. If you are interesting in being a candidate for trustee, please contact Gail Perna at [email protected] by July 31. Please consider volunteering your time to help guide and support ODPC. The board would like to have this removed to allow it to use an agenda order it has piloted for recent meetings. This new agenda order would be kept in the board’s policy manual. The new order has two parts: one covers board and club business for officers, trustees, and club chairs. The second part deals with business relating to FunFest. This new agenda order has streamlined meetings and helps them to be run more effectively and efficiently.
