SHOWCASING THE GLOBAL FILM & TV PRODUCTION INDUSTRY
THE AMERICAS
CALIFORNIA
A special focus for Location magazine in 2016 is
California, home of Hollywood, the film capital of the world
as well landscapes, towns, villages and cities of such variety
that it can offer pretty well any backdrop a feature film, TV
series or commercial production might need. Add to that a
vast and highly skilled talent base, a tax credit program and
state-of-the-art studios and you have a filmmakers haven all
within state lines.
FLORIDA
While it has its fair share of stunning beaches and palm
trees, Florida isn’t all about stunning waterside landscapes
and exotic beaches. It’s diverse cities and towns, farmlands,
swamps and national parks offer dramatic and varied
backdrops for all types of production. Ever popular for
commercial shoots and TV series from Miami Vice to
Bloodline, the state also boasts a skilled talent base.
Location magazine takes a look at who’s been shooting what
in the sunshine state.
THE GREAT PLAINS
The Great Plains region lies between the Rio Grande in the
south and the delta of the Mackenzie River at the Arctic
Ocean in the north and between the Interior Lowland and
the Canadian Shield on the east and the Rocky Mountains
on the West. Its 1.125 million square miles is the equivalent
of about one third of the entire US and it contains parts
of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming,
Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and New

Mexico, as well as Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta
in Canada and parts of Canada’s Northwest Territories.
The many hundreds of films to be shot across the region
over the years include classics The Wizard of Oz (Victor
Fleming, 1939), Red River (Howard Hawks, 1948), North
by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959), Close Encounters
of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977), Soldier Blue
(Ralph Nelson, 1970), Little Big Man (Arthur Penn, 1970),
The Last Picture Show (Peter Bogdanovich, 1971) and
Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott, 1991). Location magazine
talks to people who have filmed there and learns what the
region’s great history of filmmaking means to filmmakers
today.
EUROPE
THE NORDIC TERRITORIES
Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have
some stunning locations to offer; and these territories
have become the stars of some of the most successful
international TV dramas in recent times. From the films
of Ingmar Bergman to the TV adaptations of the works of
Henning Mankell and Sky Atlantic’s recent hit Fortitude,
this part of the world continues to capture the imaginations
of audiences the world over. Location magazine takes a look
at what’s being filmed in the Nordic Territories.
SPAIN AND THE CANARY ISLES
So close to all the major cities in Europe these territories
offer a range of facilities and locations within easy reach
of so many transport hubs. The dramatic, mountainous
Canaries, the sunny climate of so many parts of the Spanish
mainland, a wealth of history and architecture and an
infinite variety of coastlines together mean that this part of
the world can never be ignored by filmmakers. Add to all of
that Spain’s new 15% federal tax credits for international
film shoots, which rise to 35% in the Canary Islands.
Location magazine looks at what these territories have to
offer producers from around the world.
WORLDWIDE
AUSTRALIA
The parched landscapes, out-of-the-way towns and villages,
beautiful coastlines and stunning cityscapes of Australia
have all been celebrated in movies and TV series over the
years. Location magazine looks at the vibrant film business
of this vast but sparsely populated country, which offers
world-class studios and highly experienced production
talent to local and international productions.
MAKING A SCENE – A
COLLECTION OF CASE STUDIES
Location International looks at key scenes or locations
featured in past, present or upcoming movies, TV series or
commercials, what role the location played in the project,
why it was chosen, and how locals, film offices, actors and
crew worked together on set to achieve the final product.
LOCATION IN PICTURES
A series of stunning photographs from around the world,
showing locations where big movie and TV titles have been
shot, and locations that have yet to be seen on the big or
small screen.

“We worked on offering advice on script
clearances, content approvals, scouting for
potential filming locations, government
liaison, obtaining shooting permits, visas,
approvals and customs clearances,” Baker
says. “ADFC and twofour54 also played a
major role in making sure that the visiting
production team was provided with a
hassle-free visa process and superb
accommodation at affordable rates,” he
adds.
Abu Dhabi has plenty of desert to offer,
but the logistics of shooting in this location
require some experience, and the country
is building a creditable history of assisting
filmmakers including, recently, Sony
Pictures Entertainment’s Deliver Us From
Evil (2014) and 2015’s Fast And Furious 7.
“[For the Star Wars shoot] the
government provided us with an extremely
large area of pristine desert which was
serviced by first-class infrastructure and
hotels,” Baker says. “We were able to
finalise the process of liaising with the
government for approvals through a
dedicated officer at ADFC which helped
speed up the process and in turn allowed us
to dedicate our time to filming and
producing the Abu Dhabi scenes.
“Twofour54’s travel and government
services were also an essential part of our
success equation. They provided the
assistance needed to secure
accommodation and flights that were
conveniently located in proximity to our
filming locations and so the process of
transporting equipment and crew was very
manageable.”
Abu Dhabi’s geographical position also
served the film well as construction crews
came from Bollywood to service the
production. Twofour54 had the facilities
and experience to provide pre- and
post-production services.
A key part of the media hub’s mission is

to improve the experience of local
filmmakers and creatives. “Through
twofour54’s talent development
department, six Emiratis were provided
with an opportunity to work on the Star
Wars set. Two of them were then able to
follow the production to Pinewood Studios
[in the UK]. We are confident that the
process of involving local talents in
world-class production projects is crucial to
ensure a well equipped and highly skilled
pool of local talent that is competent and
ready to produce great work for great
projects,” Baker says.
