OUR 2014 AUCTIONEER
John Curley swears he doesn't
deserve the life that he has, and
believes that if karma does exist
he will come back around as a
dung beetle. Before that happens
John has much work to do. He
hosts his radio show on KIRO 97.3
FM weekdays from 9 to noon. He
serves as an elected official in the
City of Sammamish as a
councilman.
John is also President of John
Curley Auctions. He auctioneers
for 100 non-profits a year and helps to raise 2.3 million dollars
a month. In his spare time Curley competes in International
Ironman competitions and travels the country as a
motivational speaker. He wears many hats and has many titles
but likes it best when two very small people that look a little bit
like him call him dad.

many different programs and
projects, including the 747 program,
the 787 program, product

to fully assembled aircraft fuselage sections!
Bob and his wife, Rocio, live in Snohomish and have two
children, both of whom are following in their father’s footsteps

Our Second Century of Delivering
Character-Building Programs
Preparing Young People for Productive Adulthood
In 2014, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates 104 years as an
organization. Founded as an outlet to prepare every eligible
youth in America to become a participating citizen and
community leader, the BSA has more than fulfilled its mission.
As we move into our second century of service, we not only
reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong
future, as well.
Learning to lead.
Living ethical values and good character.
Knowing the thrill of goal setting and successful achievement.
Realizing the value of selfless community service.
Having a deep appreciation and respect for the outdoors.
Building memories of challenging outdoor activities.
Building friendships that last a lifetime.

WHY SUPPORT SCOUTING IN THE
NORTH PUGET SOUND AREA?
Excerpts from the Mount Baker Council, BSA,
Strategic Plan
Core Values
Above all else at the Mount Baker Council, we are committed to the
values of the Scout Oath and Law. The council’s leadership, volunteers
and a small staff are dedicated to living these values and instilling
them into the young people we serve. As a council we are also
committed to a core set of values that define who we are and serve to
guide our decision making.
Growth
We are dedicated to the mission of the Boy Scouts of America and
believe deeply in our ability to instill the values of the Scout Oath and
Law in the young people of Northwest Washington preparing them for
a lifetime of making ethical and moral choices and giving unselfish
service to others. Every action we take, every decision we make, is
aimed to support and increase the number of young people we serve
that they might benefit from our deeply held beliefs.
Safety
The safety of our Scouts and leaders is paramount. Young people need
three things to develop:



Wholesome, productive and challenging things to do.
Safe settings in which to do them.
The influence of trained adult volunteers of good character.
Fiscal Responsibility
We recognize our responsibility to be excellent stewards of the
resources entrusted to us by our supporters. We will balance our
budgets, maintain our facilities and avoid debt. We will be viewed in
our community as the best investment in the growth and character
development of our young people.
Competitive Advantages
The Mount Baker Council of the Boy Scouts of America competes in
the market place of organizations serving youth in Northwest
Washington. Values-based, relevant and adaptive, our exciting
programs and outdoor adventure s provide an engaging journey that
delivers rich educational experiences for today's youth – focused on
developing citizenship, respect for the outdoors and personal fitness.

WELCOME FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS
OF THE MOUNT BAKER COUNCIL!
Welcome Friends and Supporters of the Mount Baker Council!
Thank you for joining us tonight in support of the Mount Baker
Council’s Annual Scouting Celebration, Dinner and Auction.
Here is a quote from Waite Phillips, who in December of 1941
donated his 127,395-acre ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico to
the Boy Scouts of America. This property has become known
as Philmont Scout Ranch.
“Real philanthropy consists of helping others, outside our own
family circle, from whom no thanks is expected or required.”
–W.P.
We believe this quote says it all and that is why we, which
includes you, do what we do.
Have a great time tonight and be as generous as you can. Let’s
make sure that Scouting remains strong and vibrant in our
communities!

THE JAMES E. WEST
FELLOWSHIP AWARD
The Mount Baker Council
Heritage Society
What is a James E. West Fellowship Award?
The James E. West Fellowship Award is recognition authorized by the
National Council, BSA and presented by the local Councils for
individuals and chartered units who contribute $1,000 or more in cash
or securities to the Council Endowment fund. This fund provides
Scouting with a secure source of annual funding in perpetuity.
Who was James E. West?
James E. West was appointed to the position of Chief Scout Executive
in 1910 by the founding leadership of Scouting in America. West
worked with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest T.
Seton, and many interested community leaders to give direction to
the infant program of Boy Scouts of America. On January 2, 1911,
West and others formed the National Council, B.S.A. Under his
leadership over the next 33 years, Scouting grew and matured into the
movement we know today.
Why is he recognized?
James E. West is credited with not only helping form Scouting, but
guiding, protecting, and nurturing the program through many critical
challenges.
Who can become a James E. West Fellow?
Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of
someone - an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, Council, District
or Unit Scouter, or in memory of a departed loved one. It is a
significant honor for a Scouting supporter to be named a James E.
West Fellow. It indicates that the nominee is in the same spirit and
dedication to Scouting as was James E. West.

THE EVENING’S WINE LIST
Wine Glass Raffle Wines
2013 Honoro Vera Blanco; Rueda, Spain
A floral, fruity 100% Verdejo from northwest Spain. Elegant and
voluptuous, with exotic aromas of mango and papaya; there's
also a grassy floral note dancing in the background. Broad and
luxurious on the palate, with ripe peach and pear tart flavors.
2012 Honoro Vera Garnacha; Rueda, Spain
This all-Garnacha wine's bouquet features aromas of red and
black cherry and blackberry. On the palate, taste plums,
currants, pepper and spice notes. It has low tannins, and even
with all its fruit characteristics, there's not a hint of sweetness.
Pairs beautifully with almost everything…or by itself!
Dinner Wines
2013 Lone Birch Pinot Gris; Prosser, Washington
An enticing bouquet of 100% Pinot Gris awaits. Medium bodied
with luscious flavors of pineapple, pear, white peach and zesty
citrus fruit.
2007 Red Mountain Red Blend; Walla Walla, Washington
A special blend from one of Washington State's premier
wineries…this wine is not available in retail shops; it's
something that the winery does as a fun side project for special
customers. A fantastic example of what a Washington red blend
can be … and it's in a perfect drinking window right now!

FUND A SCOUT
Money should never be a barrier to enjoying Scouting
Opportunities
The Mount Baker Council is dedicated to providing a high
quality Scouting program to every young person in our
service area, regardless of their ability to meet the program
costs. To accomplish this goal, we need to effectively reach
out to un-served and under-served neighborhoods with the
invitation to join Scouting. We also provide information
about the Mount Baker Council's ability to provide support
to those who need it.
Currently, one in four Scouts served in the Mount Baker
Council is a child in a single parent family. We are actively
reaching out to the growing Hispanic, Asian, and eastern
European communities in our area.
This special program will not only help make Scouting
opportunities available to more families, but will help provide
handbooks, uniforms, registration fees, and camp fees for
those youth who could otherwise not be a part of Scouting.
The need is greater than ever and we will spend every dollar
raised tonight. With your help, we can make a difference in
the lives of Scouts. Please dig deep and help be a part of
making a more positive future for a Scout in need!
You really can make a difference
in the life of one Scout, two
Scouts, a Den or Patrol of eight
Scouts, or a whole Pack, Troop or
Crew of Scouts!

2014 MOUNT BAKER COUNCIL AUCTION
AUCTION RULES

Upon entry, each guest will be given a bid card. To bid in the
silent auction, simply write your bid number on the silent
auction bid form. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card
up high with the number toward the auctioneer. By bidding in
the live or silent auction, each bidder agrees to these auction
rules.

A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract
to purchase the item. As well, in the silent auction, designation
of the bid you have written on the silent auction official form
as the top bid is a legal contract to purchase that silent auction
item.

Top bidders may pay for their items at the Boy Scouts of
America Bank, which opens for regular service at the
conclusion of the live auction. It is not necessary to pay for
each item after it has been purchased and we encourage you
to pay for your purchases only once, at the end of the auction.
Payment in full however, is mandatory at the auction.

Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. The top
bid amount for an auction item will not be split among bidders
who may have agreed to pay a portion of the top bid amount.
A purchaser who wishes to split the payment for an auction
item must collect the individual payments from the other
bidder(s), then either present those payments to the auction
bank at the time the purchaser pays for the top bidder’s
purchases or accept those payments as partial reimbursement
for the total payment the purchaser has made.

All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or
refunds on items unless otherwise noted.
Page 69

We will gladly accept your payment by currency, check, Visa or
MasterCard. Please make your check payable to Boy Scouts of
America (BSA). In 1995, the Internal Revenue Service granted
the Mount Baker Council, Boy Scouts of America charitable
organization status. We are thus a 501(c) 3 charitable
organization, and your payments are tax deductible as a
charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law.

Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be
claimed and used within one year of the auction date.

The Mount Baker Council, BSA, reserves the right to add or
withdraw, without notice, items to or from the auction.

Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be
mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.
Tickets in travel packages are for coach class unless otherwise
noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for
canceled tickets and/or accommodations

Travel will be provided by donors as described even if the
prices increase above those stated. Because travel charges
change, travel costs may decrease in values stated, but no
refunds will be allowed.

All items not removed from the auction premises this evening
will be stored for you at the Mount Baker Council Service
Center, 1715 - 100th PL SE, Suite B, Everett, (425) 338-0380.
You may claim your item(s) between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.,
Monday – Friday, or Saturday – 9:00 a.m. –12:30 p.m. after
Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

The Mount Baker Council, BSA, has attempted to describe and
catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered “as is,
where is.” Mount Baker Council, BSA, neither warrants nor
represents, and in no event shall be responsible for the
correctness of descriptions, genuineness, authorship,
Page 70
provenance, or condition of the items. No statement made in
this catalog or made orally at the auction or elsewhere shall be
deemed such a warranty for tax purposes or fair market value.
Items have not been appraised unless otherwise noted.

Each person issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and
hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the
auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability
arising there from Mount Baker Council, BSA, its elected and
appointed officials, members, and employees, the
auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents.
SILENT AUCTION RULES

Items offered in the silent auction will have silent auction bid
forms attached to them or on a table nearby. You may bid by
simply writing your bid number on the form opposite the
amount you want to bid. We ask you to press hard as you are
making three copies.

You do not have to take the next available bid amount, but
may skip ahead on the form to find the amount you really
want to bid. The next bidder must bid a higher number than
you to be successful.

If you really want an item, just write your bid number opposite
the amount labeled “Guaranteed Purchase” and you own the
item. Once you write your bid number on the “Guaranteed
Purchase” line, the bidding on that item is concluded.

You may bid on any item in the silent auction until that section
is closed. Bidding for items in the silent auction sections will
close at the time posted. A silent auction official will circle the
top bid number and amount. You can see if you are the
successful purchaser by looking at a copy of the silent auction
bid form which is left in place after the section is closed.
Page 71
LIVE AUCTION RULES

You may preview the live auction from the time the doors
open until the start of the live auction. Please feel free to
come right up to the display of the live auction items, even up
onto the auction stage. We want you to have adequate time
and opportunity to see the excellent quality of the live auction
items. Also, please note any restrictions, limitations, sizes, etc.

To ensure for you that the auction concludes at a reasonable
hour, the live auction will begin during dinner and continue
without intermission until all items have been auctioned.

You may bid in the live auction by holding your bid card up
high with the number toward the auctioneer. Either the
auctioneer or bid spotter can accept your bid.
