The Weapons in the Civil War
The Weapons in the Civil War By: Chris Costas All about the weapons in the Civil War I’m going to talk about the weapons in the war but first here’s short discussion all about the weapons in the Civil War. The weapons in the civil war were rifles, cannons, pistols, knives and swords. The weapon they used most was the rifle. The generals didn’t usually use rifles. They used pistols and swords. The best weapon was the cannons. The cannons were made out of bronze and steel these. The topics I’m going to talk about are the cannons, the rifle\ muskets, what were the generals weapons and what were soldiers weapons. The cannons in the Civil War The canons were the most dangerous weapon in the civil war. It was when it made contact with something it would destroy it. It was the hardest weapon to reload. The cannons were made out of bronze and steel. That’s why they are the most strongest weapon in the civil war. I think the cannons were good and bad because they took a long time to reload. The good thing is that they were the strongest weapon. The rifles and pistols in the Civil War The rifle were more used then the muskets in the civil war. The rifles and muskets took a long time to reload. They were really common in the war. Some soldiers got a gun called short barreled carbines. The soldiers also got the enfield rifle it was from britain. The guns always needed gunpowder and cartridge. The pistols in the war were the starr army revolver, the colt .44 and the remington. The colt .44 came with a holster to put the gun in. The rifle took a long time because it was shot with a small musket ball. So they had to put it in when they shoot. In other words after they shot they had to put in another one of the musket balls. The generals weapons in the Civil War The generals weapons in the civil war were knifes, swords and pistols. The knife they usually used was the bowie knife. The confederate generals used foot officer swords. The generals also used pistols. The pistols they used was the colt .44 and sometimes they used the remington. Another sword they used was called the 1850 saber. There was another sword that was used to cut things it was called the artillery short sword. That was used to cut rope and other things. It was important for the generals to not carry rifles in the war because they were on horses and it would be hard to hold them. Also if they drop it it takes twice as long to pick it up. It is also good because they can ran faster soldiers usually stay in one spot and shoot well generals have to move around. The General story When I met a general named Aron I asked him “was it good to have no rifle or was it bad that you didn’t have the rifles”. Then he said “ I think it was good because we are scouting places so I don’t think we could of last carrying the rifles because they were pretty heavy”. Then he told me a story he said that when he was in battle that when the confederate soldiers attacked he said that it was better to hold a pistol because they got more shots. In one minute the pistols would shoot 10 bullets with a rifle maybe 2 or 3. So in the generals perspective the pistol is better. Then he went on to his story so when the confederate attacked he told the soldiers to fire when a confederate soldier came behind me then I took out my sword I stabbed him then all of them started charging so I got on my horse and took off but then they shot my horse's leg so then I told my troops to fire so they were fighting then a man shot me then I took out my pistol and shot him I looked down I saw that he shot me in the leg so when the medical care came the took me into a special room they told me to drink whiskey so I did. I was pretty scared because this has never happened, so then they said close your eyes so I did then I started to schemed. When they told me to open my eyes I looked down I wanted to fant. I said WHERES MY LEG. They told me to calm down they said that I could not fight anymore I know I couldn’t but I didn’t want to hear it. When everyone left I tried to get up they gave me a cane to help so it took me 30 minutes to get up but I finally did. then one the soldiers in my group walked into the room he asked me what happened so I told him everything I also told him that I can’t fight anymore then I realized that why can’t just get a wooden leg then I could still be able to tell people where to go then the soldier said I’ll help you. So the next day I walked outside the soldiers all looked at me I asked them “ haven’t you guys ever see someone without a leg then they went back to work they didn’t ever look at me so when we were getting things ready the confederates attacked we run to our weapons to fight I had know clue where my horse was so I get my sword and my pistol and then thats when I saw the soldier that helped me with my leg was on the ground died. I wanted to scream I was so mad. After the battle I know I had to do something special for his grave. So later that day I dug up a hole right next to my tent. What were the soldiers weapons in the Civil War The soldiers in the war used rifles and swords. The swords they used was the same as the generals. The bad thing was that the rifles took a long time to reload and know in days it takes 5 seconds. It stinks because you can’t go on a rampage. the soldiers used the cannons they were the ones that load them then they shoot them. I know that they usually were the ones that cut the rope and other things. This picture is about a sword and a rifle. The soldiers used the rifles so this is one of the rifles. I think the sword was for the soldiers and the generals. A Soldiers Story When I met a soldier named Tim I ask what were your weapons like in the war and he said that it was a pain to reload it took a 1 minute now it takes 3 maybe 5 seconds. Then he said when I got to shoot someone it is when they weren’t looking. Then Tim said “that it was so weird because the weapons are so weird from the revolutionary war”. Then I went to Gettysburg that was bad because the weapons took a long time to reload so when you shoot while you're reloading they can charge at you and then you would run. The good thing is that the weapons were a lot better in the Civil War then the Revolutionary War. Conclusion These were some of the weapons that the soldiers used and the generals used. I hope you learn more about the rifles and the cannons in the war. I really liked to research on this because it was fun and it was very interesting to find out what were the weapons in the war. I know a little but now I know a lot about the weapons in the civil war. Resources book:Civil war by Dorling Kindersley https://www.flickr.com/photos/nationalinfantrymuseum/5142788631/lightbox
