From the Editor Jeannette Rockdashil
Can it be April already? We have had a long winter here in Central New York. By now we are all ready for Spring. I know I still
have snow in my yard, which hopefully will be gone by mid
week. I have combined the January, February and March newsletter together due to the limited amount of activities during
our winter months.
We are still looking for recipes and events you want to share
about your Porsche. Everyone loves to read a story or two
about someone’s winter project, adventure, or just the time or
experience with their car. We will be adding a new column, “It’s
not just the cars, it’s the people” in our next newsletter so send
us a story you have.

Porsche Parade 2010 in St. Charles, Illinois – My son Jeff takes a PCA bus tour to Oak
Park to learn about Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and see some of his buildings.
Jeff meets Mr. Sean Reardon (past PCA national secretary) who is an architect in the
mid-west. They spend the day talking about Frank Lloyd Wright’s work and architecture in general. Jeff is a Math Major at St. Lawrence University.
August 2010 – Jeff has an epiphany. He wants to be an architect! Oh Boy - need to
change majors and change colleges, fast. Frantic end-of-summer search culminates
with Jeff enrolled in the 6-year Architecture program at Drexel U. in Philadelphia, PA.
Porsche Parade 2013, Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan – We meet Sean Reardon and
thank him for inspiring Jeff to become an architect. We agree to stay in touch.
June 2014 – Jeff decides to pursue his interest in Danish furniture design and leaves
for a 6 week course in Copenhagen, Denmark.
August 1, 2014 – Jeff’s studies in Copenhagen are finished. The rest of the Pond family now join Jeff in Copenhagen to begin a 2-week, whirlwind tour of Europe.
August 12th – We arrive at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and are greeted by none
other than Dieter Landenberger, the Museum’s Curator. Sean Reardon had told Dieter we were coming and requested he give us a nice PCA welcome. Boy did he! Can
you say, “Private tour of the shop.” Wowee Wow Wow. So there we were, 5 Pond’s
and Dieter in THE shop with all these very special cars that were being restored. It
was like being in a fish bowl because we were looking out of the picture windows
into the lobby at the general public. How cool was that! Dieter was very gracious and
obviously very knowledgeable about everything in there. We felt so special and got
to see stuff nobody else gets to see. That special intro to the Porsche Museum lasted
about 45 minutes but will be etched in our memories for ever.
It’s pretty amazing how PCA events and relationships can snowball into a series of dots
that are not only fun and interesting, but can also be life-changing as well. It’s true,
“It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”.

Presidents Column: What am I thinking? by Chris White
I am thinking that it should be spring already! This has been a very long winter and it seems like
ages since I have been able to enjoy a fun 'sporty' drive. Sure, the Cayenne can be fun to drive
(both on and off road) but at 5500 lbs its just a tad heavy for real sporty driving!
I did manage to get the Cayenne truly stuck in early March. Me and the Cayenne are still out in
Idaho on my consulting project and on a nice Saturday I was out on one of my scenic exploration
drives, I choose a mountain pass that I had not been on before. Initially it was just supposed to be
a reconnaissance drive to see if it was worth coming back when the snow melted. As I drove up
the pass it was in much better shape than I expected, the snow was quite firm and the dirt surface
was still frozen - so I continued up pass as long as the conditions stayed good. Just short of the
top of the pass I came across a couple of switchbacks. As I entered the first one the back of my
brain told me it was time to turn around....that was the point when the tires broke through the
layer of ice and dropped into the soft snow leaving the Cayenne sitting on it frame.
Oops. at least it was sunny and not too cold out. I had some tools on board and I tried to extricate
myself from the snow. I had 40 feet of strap and a come-along. Too bad the nearest tree was 80'
away! I tried using the jack to raise one side at a time and put stray sage brush parts under the
wheels....that got me about 6" in an hour. Looking at the time it was clear that the jacking tactic
was not going to get me out. By now it was 12 noon and I did the math - it was 12 miles back to
anywhere that I might find a person and about 10 miles to where I might get a cell signal. You do
not want to be out in the wilderness at night....in Idaho when the sun goes down the temp drops
very fast. I figured I could make the 12 miles in 6 hours max, so I took all my photo gear out of my
photography back pack and loaded it up with water and a spare coat and off I went on my hike. It
was actually enjoyable because I was way up in the mountains and I was on a mission!
At about the 6 mile mark I came across a young couple that was out in their old pickup going Coyote hunting. They offered to help out and we drove up to where the Cayenne was stuck. We
barely got there because the temps had gotten over freezing and the sun was melting the mountain snow quickly. The road was either deep in loose snow or getting muddy. Not good. We tried
pulling the Cayenne with the old F150 - it didn't move an inch. It was pretty obvious that this was
not going to work so they offered to drive me back to Arco and see if I could find a towing company that would give it a try. Arco was 30 miles away, 12 of those miles on a snowy / muddy
mountain pass.
By now it was getting later and I was figuring that I might just have to stay in Arco (population
about 1,000) and try in the morning - but thanks to a bunch of cell phone calls I found a towing
guy that would give it a try. Clearly a tow truck was not going to make it up the pass.....not even
close. But he did have a brand new F350 with off road tires and he would give it a shot.
Presidents Column Con’t
We loaded his Ford with lots of tow cable and some shovels and off we went. It was tough going on
the second half of the trail, almost got stuck three or four times on the way up. The driver was thinking that it might be better to come back in the morning....until I told him the forecast was for rain
the next day!
We eventually made it up to the Cayenne and hooked it up .The first effort just go the F350 stuck in
the snow and ice. Then we hooked up all the cable and the straps, gave it some slack and he took
off. The added momentum helped pull the Cayenne out of its hole in the snow and ice - but now I
was being pulled backwards down the side of trail in the snow filled ditch. That excitements went on
for a good 100 yards until I was finally able to get it free of the ditch. Free at last!!! The rest of the
trip out was uneventful - except that it started to rain 10 minutes after the Cayenne was set free!
The total cost? I gave the young couple $100 to go have a nice dinner since they could not go Coyote
hunting and the tow cost $300....I think I got a story worth $400 out of it!
Here are some pictures I took on the hike out:

Watkins Glen Opening Day 2015
On April 19th the CNY PCA is planning drive and breakfast stop on the
way to the Watkins Glen Opening Weekend Event.
We will have two driving groups (north and south) start out in the Syracuse area (Lafayette) and the Binghamton area and converge on the Dryden Hotel for breakfast and then drive as a group over to Watkins Glen
Racetrack for a 1pm track tour. We will be meeting the Niagara PCA club
at the track and join up together for the 3 lap track tour ($25)
The proceeds from the track tour will be going to "Autism Speaks" and
the Nascar Foundation.
The Northern group will meet at the LaFayette McDonalds for a 8:30am
departure. We will drive to the Dryden Hotel for a late breakfast (approx.
9:30am) and meet up with the Southern group.
The Southern Group will be meeting up at the Binghamton Cracker Barrel. We will gather at the REAR parking lot at 8:00am on the 19th, and
leave together at about 8:18 to travel on to The Dryden Hotel with a plan
to meet up with the Northern group for a 9:30 breakfast.
Following breakfast the group will drive to Watkins Glen and enjoy parade laps around the track along with Niagara PCA at 1pm. After the parade laps we are all free to do as we please for lunch!

CNY PCA Auto Cross- Cherry Valley Auto Cross
We have managed to resurrect the CNY autocross program. Currently we have two
firm dates at the Cherry Valley Motorsports Park.
For those that haven’t tried it autocrossing your Porsche is a lot of fun – especially at
Cherry Valley Motorsports Park. Typically autocross is done on a course set up in a
parking lot with a lot of cones…..lots and lots of cones! In order to succeed you have
to memorize the course and then drive it well. Cherry Valley is different – Normally
it’s a Kart Track - very tight and not very wide. It turns out is great for auto crossing
and you don’t have to worry about the cones! Just follow the paved track and enjoy
the ride!
The current schedule is for two events at Cherry Valley and we are looking
for more parking lot style events.
Cherry Valley events will be on 6/13/15 and 8/23/15.There will be more
information as we get closer…..but save the dates now!!

March Charity Event by Barb Conley
On March 28th our Porsche club members gathered once again for one of our most anticipated events of the year, the Charity Auction and Dinner which was held once again at the
Springside Inn in Auburn. We had a good showing with 54 people in attendance.
As we did last year, we invited our very own members, Hans and Carol Neiderer, to play during
our cocktail hour. They did a wonderful job and I think everyone enjoyed their musical talents.
The Springside did a great job once again meeting our needs and serving a wonderful meal.
Chris White served as our auctioneer and he did a good job promoting a wide variety of generously donated items . We also tried something new this year to speed things along and raffled
some of the items instead of putting them up for bids. Our members seemed to have fun
choosing which item to enter their raffle tickets into and then crossing their fingers that their
number would be called on their favorite item. Another change we made also worked out well;
this year we asked for donations of needed supplies from the Mom’s House wish list instead of
Food Bank items, making the event truly 100% for Mom’s House. Laurie Bowen, the Mom’s
House Director, was so appreciative of the donations of items they use everyday and was very
impressed with our member’s generosity. At the end of the evening when we tallied up the bids
and raffle ticket purchases we had raised a record $3663.00.This was the last year for Mom’s
House as our selected charity so it is nice to go out with a bang! The donation of an IMS repair
really put us over the top! Thanks go out to Rocco at Cantech Automotive for making that donation. We would also like to thank our members for all the great items they brought to the
auction. We saw several home made items this year, which is always special. We are fortunate
to have some very talented crafters as members. A good time was had by all and we look forward to next year’s auction when we will be supporting a new charity. Thanks again to everyone for their generous donations and purchases.
