50th anniversaries are usually golden.
But black-and-white checkered seems more fitting.
The Porsche 911 has proven to be the most successful road car in motorsport for the last 50 years. To
commemorate this milestone, we've created a fitting tribute. The 50th Anniversary edition 911. Based on the
7th generation 911, only 1963 will be made available. Each equipped with a Powerkit, which increases engine
output to 430-hp, increased track width, and special seats designed with a fabric pattern hearkening back to
the original 911. For those who appreciate automotive history, and wish to own a piece of it, please contact
us. Then, enjoy a victory lap of your own. Porsche. There is no substitute.

FROM THE EDITOR
WAYNE KUNKEL
The fall colors are at their peak this last week or two and that change has happened gradually. I have noticed the ash trees in the front yard are
now bare but the huge maple in the yard next to us is just starting to shed its huge abundance of multicolored leaves this week. My neighbor
put his 13 year old black lab down and that change for him has been immediate and profound. We, the CNY PCA, are also in a state of change
with our officers.
Part of my corporate career involved presenting information on change and how change can be an opportunity or a threat. Change can be
gradual like the leaves turning or sudden like the death of a loved one. How we react to any change is what is important and critical to our club.
Our Board of Directors and past presidents have steered us through planning session year after year with good results and good fellowship. The
Porsche marque links us all but in the end it is our human interaction at rallies, concours, autocrosses, parties, and all club activities that keeps
us coming back.
Some of you have left indelible impressions on my life that I will never forget and for that I am grateful. A few of you have chosen to become
involved in the administration of the club, its mission, and having a plan to carry that out. For you few that have chosen to become involved in
running the club I am even more grateful for your service.
For a long time I was just one of the “BOZOS on the BUS”. I did not make the time to do many events, had never done a DE; hated concours
events, and just did autocrosses. We moved to CNY in December of 1986 and ended up living close to Rocket Ralph Edmonds and the
irrepressible Joyce. After being in the Niagara Region since 1976, the CNY Region offered us more things to do and Ralph convinced me that I
would survive a D.E. at Watkins.

Fast forward almost 30 years and now there are few events I miss with CNY PCA. Yes, I did miss the last weekends rally but I had another
commitment in PA. Some of the things I do I am letting go so some of the younger folks can help out and get involved. When you get involved
you become an agent of change.

Thank You
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members that have helped me, and
offered to help, through the club’s recent presidential transition period. I did not anticipate
this role, but since assuming the position, many of you have come forward and helped in a
variety of ways, all good. I could not have done it without you. The response bears testament
to the strength of CNY and bodes well for its future.
The annual banquet is on November 16th and I look forward to seeing many of you there.
The nominating committee is working toward identifying candidates for president and
vice president. I encourage you to either volunteer or submit nominations for the two open
positions. You will be given the opportunity to vote for the next president and vice president
of our club at the banquet. I will work closely with the new officers to ensure as seamless
a transition as possible and will then continue in my elected role of club secretary through
2014.

Good news for our racing enthusiast members. As many of you know, 2013 marks the end of a racing era for the American
LeMans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. These 2 racing entities will merge in 2014 into the United
Sportscar Racing series.
September/October 2013
While Porsche has had success in both these series in the past, it came through customer-backed racing teams. In 2014 there
will be a 2-car, Porsche factory-backed team of Porsche 911 RSRs!! So….Porsche will be back at the 24 Hours of LeMans
and the rest of the series. The first race will be the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona on January 25 and 26. I am already claiming
bragging rights!!!!
The Redline Report
More great Porsche racing news: Australian Mark Webber, current Formula 1 Red Bull driver, has signed a multi-year contract
with Porsche to drive the LMP1 (Petite LeMans) sports prototype and World Endurance Championship works entries. Mark
will drive with Porsche factory drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas as well as F1 test driver Neel Jani.
2014 will be a great year for Porsche racing, folks!!

CNYPCA Charity Committee Selects our
2014 and 2015 Recipient
The Charity Committee, comprised of Barbara
Conley (chair), Dr. Bruce Parker and Rich
Ertinger, received four very viable submittals
from our membership for potential club
support. The selection was not easy as all of
the submittals were very worthy organizations.
After much research and discussion the
committee selected Mom’s House to receive our
club’s support for 2014 and 2015.
Mom’s House is a nonprofit, pre-school child
care center that provides a range of free services
for low-income single parents. This support
enables the parent to complete their education,
pursue and secure employment, and hopefully
become an independent, self-sustaining family
unit. The organization was founded in 1983
and now has seven houses in four states. Each
house is responsible for securing its own
funds. We will be working with the Moms
House in Johnson City, NY. Our donations
could potentially have a significant impact on
the Johnson City Mom’s House because, as
previously mentioned, each house is on its own
to raise funds as there is no national organization
to help with finances.
September/October 2013
Factors the committee considered in the
evaluation process included whether the charity
differed from prior club supported charities
regarding geographic area and target population
served. Also considered were; the ability for our
members to have “hands-on” involvement, the
financial need of the charity, and their access to
other funding sources.
The Redline Report
Our club has a proud tradition of supporting
communities within our region and we will
continue to build upon that tradition with this
latest selection. Our major charitable fund raiser
is the annual Charity Auction, typically held in
late winter or early spring. Look for details soon
about the auction. It is a worthwhile event and
we hope you plan to attend and join the fun and
lend your support.

ADIRONDACK DRIVE PLEASES ALL
Joyce Gladle
27 CNY Porsches left Utica on Saturday morning, September
14, headed for the winding roads of the lower Adirondack
Mountains.
Mark Schultz led the group which included almost every
Porsche model between Brad and Max Hall’s 1964 356
Coupe and Kellie and Chris Heiselman’s 2010 GT3 RS. As
usual when we travel in a group, folks stopped and watched
a virtual car show pass through their towns and country
villages.
The weather started out a bit dreary, but just a few miles
north, blue skies began to peek through and soon bright sun
and puffy white clouds added to the beauty of the mountains.
“Porsche roads” abound in the Adirondacks and Mark seems
to know the very best ones. Long stretches of road with no
towns allowed the string of Porsches to wind around corners
and glide up and down hills, past lakes and over streams,
each more beautiful than the previous one.
The tour took us through the familiar towns that we all
associate with our state’s northern mountains, Speculator,
Inlet and Indian Lake, all conjuring up images of early
settlers, woodsmen, Native Americans and pioneers of
another era long ago. Our destination was Blue Mountain
Lake and the Adirondack Museum.
It was “Rustic Furniture Fair” weekend and the ladies hit the
jackpot. Adirondack master craftsmen were in abundance in
the village of Blue Mountain Lake as well as at the Museum.
Once the Porsches were safe in their private parking lot, we
all went up to the Museum. After a nice lunch, we were free
to explore the beautiful 32-acre campus, overlooking pristine
Blue Mountain Lake, including 22 buildings containing a
virtual history of early life in northern New York State. The
craftsmen were an added bonus. Even though there is not
a lot of space in our chosen vehicles, lots of shopping bags
made their way back to the cars. This Museum is a treasure
not to be missed. Adirondack lore is well represented there
and most enjoyable to see.
On a personal note, Chuck and I have a 1903 Indian Girl
canoe built by J. R. Rushton, Canton, NY. We named her
“Moon Daughter” after Nokomis from the Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow poem “Hiawatha’s Childhood”. We saw one
just like it at the Museum. It was very exciting for us as they
are quite rare these days.
Mid-afternoon found us back in our Porsches and on our way
south to Old Forge. Folks split off
according to their individual plans. Mark invited the remaining
CNYers to stop by his cottage on
First Lake for a glass of wine and even more Porsche
camaraderie on his dock. The sun shone
brightly and the lake was gorgeous. It was a perfect ending
to a perfect day with Porsche friends.
Our sincere thanks to Carol Schultz (Mark’s Mom) and Mike
Canarelli for helping Mark put this beautiful day together for
us. And very special thanks to Mark for finding those great
roads and sharing them with his Porsche friends.

A Case of Care and Feeding
Colin Penny
While Chris was enlightening everyone on the finer points of
the Porsche engine, his wife Cathie was busy preparing lunch
for everyone. The aroma of freshly grilled hamburgers and
sausages found its way to the garage as the tech session was
winding down. In true Halloween spirit, Cathie had tastefully
adorned the table with dark colors, spiders, black candelabras,
and other Halloween paraphernalia. The food was delicious
and everyone enjoyed a great meal before heading home.
As is often the case with Chris’s sessions, the questions that arose
were answered clearly and with a depth of knowledge that comes from
his extensive technical background. There were also several engines
available for inspection, all of them showing a level of craftsmanship
that many of us can only marvel at. Gene Raymondi’s Blue Lightning
track-prepared Boxster occupied part of Chris’ garage space, allowing
everyone an up-close inspection.
Thanks to Chris and Cathy for filling us with both knowledge
and food!
The Redline Report
September/October 2013
October the 5th saw twenty members of CNY gather at Chris White’s
garage in Marietta to receive sage advice on the care and feeding of
engines for both street and track use. Chris lead his guests through
some fundamentals of engines, engine components, and the role that
lubricating oil plays in protecting them. Oil selection is always a hot
topic among Porsche owners and this session was no different. It was
particularly interesting to see some graphic examples of what can happen
to an engine should that protection fail.

THREE GREAT PORSCHE DRIVES – ONE VACATION
Joyce Gladle
At various times through the years, Chuck and I have had occasion
to enjoy driving one of our Porsches on portions of the Blue
Ridge Parkway. When the opportunity arose this past August to
visit Gatlinburg and Nashville, we decided we would drive the
complete route from north to south, a distance of 469 miles.
At the end of the Cherohala we stopped for some lunch and struck
up a conversation with some bikers--as we are prone to do. They
were just coming off The Dragon and directed us to where it
began. What a shock. We could run The Dragon after all! We
were very excited.
Upon further investigation we discovered that “the Blue Ridge
Parkway” is only part of the complete drive from Front Royal,
VA to Cherokee, NC. The northern portion, from Front Royal
to Staunton, VA is actually the Skyline Drive which travels
through the Shenandoah National Park. The southern portion,
from Staunton, VA to Cherokee, NC, is the Blue Ridge Parkway
portion of the whole drive and ends at the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park.
There are so many stories out there about The Dragon that it is
hard to know what to believe. Let’s start with some facts. It is 11
miles long and has 318 turns. It has great elevation changes. The
scenery is beautiful, but you barely have time to look at it. It is
a sports car and bike Mecca. People come from literally all over
the world to run this section of road. The police are ever present
as there have been some catastrophic accidents on this stretch of
road. Blount County Rescue Squad posts a squad on The Dragon
on busy days to reduce response time.
As many of you may know, the official speed limit on these two
beautiful drives is 45 MPH. That, of course, begs the question:
How could that be any fun in a Porsche? Well, we have discovered
that in the spring or fall/late summer, no one is looking. Plus the
road winds along the top of a ridge in a manner that proves to be
lots of fun at a “slightly” elevated speed.
In addition to the enjoyment of the driving, we were treated to a
variety of wildlife sightings. Deer, turkey and small animals are
quite common to see. We were also fortunate enough to see 3
bears. We stopped to watch a single cub crossing the road in front
of our Porsche and then saw a sow and her cub just meandering
along the bank on the side of the road. Wonderful to see!
When planning for this trip we investigated running “The Tail
of the Dragon”, a legendary drive through the southern Smokey
Mountains. Somehow, I concluded that it was located in Georgia
and therefore we would not be able to drive it on this trip. While
checking on that drive, I came across information on a similar
run called the “Cherohala Skyway”. This was touted as being
60 miles of fun road just a bit less challenging than The Dragon
so we decided to run it. We set out on a cloudy morning from
Cherokee, NC for the beginning of the Cherohala, which ran from
Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN. It was a beautiful drive,
again on great Porsche roads at high elevation.
As we turned onto Route 129 to start our run, we looked driver’s
right and saw a badly mangled car—honest. It was a reminder.
About 3 miles down, we passed a flat-bed coming toward us with
2 more, slightly-less mangled cars. Time for heightened attention
and great diligence. This road averages 900-1,000 cars a day,
every day of the year. It has, sadly, claimed at least 1 life every
year. It is a place to have a great time but be very aware of the
dangers lurking at every curve.
I’m pretty sure that Chuck could never have done this on his own.
I’m so glad that I was there next to him to help at every corner.
Chuck? Not so much! But, at the end of the 11 miles and 318
curves, we and the 928 were unscathed. We never even dropped

The Alternative Line

Hydrogen, which is a potential fuel, can be obtained
by electrolysis from water, the concept of HHO. That
requires more energy than could be gotten back in the
form of useful work from combustion of that hydrogen
in any engine, especially since all internal combustion
engines convert less than 50% of their available BTU
energy potential from any fuel into mechanical work - the
rest is lost as heat. Now it is possible that you could use
that heat if it is winter in CNY, but the root issue here
is that you must in ALL cases input more energy than
you can get out. It’s called ENTROPY, and there is no
such thing as negative entropy, as would be necessary
for a perpetual motion machine, which is what the
HHO is purported to be. It’s not, and never could be.
The Redline Report
September/October 2013
However, another fact is that it is conceivable that you
could use the energy you get from some other source,
say for example Natl Grid, to generate enough hydrogen
to allow small commutes if you also compressed the
H2 into a storage means you could transport. That
would functionally duplicate the process of an electric
vehicle, which also would produce no “emissions” AT
THE VEHICLE. But, like the batteries for those electric
vehicles, there are adverse emissions SOMEWHERE in
the energy production - perhaps not at the tailpipe, but
somewhere along the line.

every gasoline car made today uses for its fuel injection.
The killer problem is the metering of the fuel. Assuming
you effectively pulled the fuse on the electric fuel pump
found on almost every new vehicle today, it would take
only re-insertion of the fuse for that system to work with
gasoline again. But metering of the H2 would be far more
of a problem, as it must meet a similar stociometric ratio
(the proper mix of air and fuel for efficient burn) with
the incoming air in order to work properly. Because H2
would be a gas at the individual piston in the engine, it
could be set to flow at essentially a “rich” condition all
the time, which would assure nearly the maximum power
output from the engine, but you would waste a HUGE
amount of H2 when the engine ran at low load, which is
MOST of the time. But if you set the metering for that
instead, it would take a week to get 0-60 at wide open
throttle. So to properly avoid wasting more than half the
H2 you produced away from the vehicle in the first place,
you would have to have a form of Flex Fuel capability.
As some of you might be aware, Porsche has developed
a supercar, called the 918, which is a hybrid. Porsche is
not stupid, by any means, so one would think that if HHO
could provide benefits, it would be there. It isn’t, because
it would be a waste of effort. And even the concept of
using H2 as an alternative fuel was not used because
there are tons of problems with the handling, storage,
and accident potential of H2, to say nothing of the lack
of distribution infrastructure, the key problem now for
full electric vehicles made by anyone, such as the Tesla
and Fiskar concepts. Once the batteries are depleted, the
recharge time is simply unacceptable at any price.
Cars made as Flex Fuel today simply have engine control
computers (ECU) which adjust the metering based on
feedback from the O2 sensors used for emissions on all
vehicles, but those systems are typically limited to the
gasoline mixes of between 0 and 15% ethanol blends
found in the distribution system today. They cannot work,
for example, with mixes less than 85% gasoline itself. And
in any case, those fuel delivery systems could not meter
enough H2 through the current injectors, as the H2 must
be at elevated pressures which would freeze the injector if
it even COULD handle the H2 upstream pressure, which
they cannot. So a completely duplicate function and
ECU would be needed to make the H2 as a fuel work.
And the volume consumed would be HUGE. The whole
reason gasoline has been such a great fuel since the turn
of the 19th century has been its relative ease of use at
atmospheric pressure and high relative BTU availability
in small storage volume. Carburetors, without a feedback
control mechanism, would be nightmarish.
The ONE possibility for HHO produced at a stationary
location and stored for mobile usage in that scenario,
though, would be if you reached the limited range of
the H2 capacity onboard, you could conceivably run on
gasoline if you had some in another tank, thereby making a
conceptual “hybrid” of any existing gasoline-only vehicle.
Maybe, but that would require separate fuel metering for
each of the fuels, with shutoff as each is not being used.
Conceptually, that would require little more than a relay
and valve combination in the fuel stream, something
The addition of ethanol, as with the typical 10% blend in
almost any pump gas in CNY, actually reduces the fuel
economy, because a similar volume of ethanol contains
only about 80% of the BTU of gasoline. Its use has
been primarily a welfare program for huge farms, but
discovered to simulate octane in the burning process, as
it slows the burn rate on the gas, thereby reducing preignition, or “ping” which destroys an engine. So oil
companies have embraced it, especially since lead cannot
be used, and the prior solution was MTBE, which has

Several CNY PCA members and friends made a mini-tour through the countryside, on a beautiful August day, to enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea at Dallywater’s
British Eatery (68 Castle St., Geneva). The food was excellent, and the service
exemplary. The hostess, Janice, was attentive to our every need. Some drivers likely
had to slide their seats back a notch to fit behind the wheel for the ride home.

been found to be a carcinogen. All of this is because
the spark point in a single cycle of the typical otto cycle
engine (pretty much every one except small motorbikes,
weed whackers and the like) must be advanced to before
top dead center to get adequate power, while engine speed
and load affects the performance, which is why your ECU
must adjust that spark point and fuel mixture continuously.

As full disclosure, I will volunteer that I have been no
fan of “Hybrid” technologies, despite the enormous
investments and seeming market successes for many of the
automakers, including Porsche, which has hybrid add-ons
for at least the Cayenne and Panamera, in addition to the
918. My essential gripe has been that the “emissions” as
measured by EPA fails to factor any of the sodium disposal
for the batteries and their relative mass of dead weight
which must be lugged around to give any reasonable range
to the vehicle, to say nothing of the demands on already

overburdened infrastructure of the
electrical grid in the one place where short range electrics
could conceivably be reasonable; urban and semi-urban
settings. And even there, the generation of the electricity
is usually by coal, with the adverse emissions merely
shifted, not eliminated. There is simply no such thing as a
zero emissions vehicle if one is honest.
The fact is that diesel vehicles obtain near-hybrid mileage
with essentially none of the “wink-wink, nudge-nudge” of
hybrids’ shifted emissions. And I had the opportunity to
drive two Opel low-sulfur wagons through the Appenine
Mountains in Italy, and did not even realize they were
diesels when I stopped for fuel. They have come a long
way from the chattering bucket of bolts we normally
associate with diesels. And even gas engines are pretty
decent, and continue to be made ever more efficient, even
as we add bulk to the cars for safety and comforts, as
means to justify the costs those developments add to the
cars. Let’s stop kidding ourselves.
Recently the question of what the members of
CNY PCA want in the way of activities, events and
programs has been raised.
As a member of the CNY PCA Region for 49
years, I have always known our region to have an
open-door policy. Any of our members can speak
out at anytime expressing ideas for events, programs
and meetings. We also have a meeting each year in
January, the CNY PCC Annual Planning Meeting,
for the explicit purpose of gathering ideas and
setting the year’s agenda. The open forum of this
meeting allows all in attendance to put forward
their comments, ideas and suggestions. Such
ideas submitted verbally or in writing prior to the
meeting are also encouraged and welcome.
Members who attend our events and meetings
know well that we enjoy a variety of rallies,
autocrosses, driver education/track events, tech
sessions, tours, social meetings and events devoted
to our cars and driver safety. The list is endless
showing a wide range of activities. This has proven
to be a very successful formula for many years
now. We also support and encourage attendance at
neighboring PCA region events, the Zone 1 annual
autocross and concours and rally, as well as PCA
national Parades and the Porsche Escapes. We
sponsor events to honor charities, participate in
food and toy collections to benefit needy families
and we actively support our armed services. In
addition, we have an annual family picnic, a
November Annual Business/Social Meeting and
our yearly Holiday/Christmas Party.

The key for any member is to do the following:
attend meetings, read the Redline Report newsletter
and open the CNY web page. You will see that we
always look to you with an open mind for planning
our events. So please speak up, every member has a
say in this region’s schedule of events.
