Owner Jerry Deal got his start after a neighbor chastised him for eating grapes from her vines (on his side of the fence). He planted his own and the vines were so prolific that wine making was the logical move. Established in 1990, Forks of Cheat Winery today produces 17,000 gallons of wine using French Hybrid and American varietal grapes. This family owned / family run winery features 16 acres of grapes and a 5,000 sq. ft. facility with tasting room, gift shop, sales and an outdoor events pavilion. This winemaker also runs a legal moonshine operation, Forks of Cheat Distillery, from which owner Jerry Deal produces fine port. Old Stewartstown Road, Morgantown Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1pm-5pm Tours (weather permitting): call 1-877-WV WINES www.wvwines.com www.tourmorgantown.com 1.800.458.7373 West Virginia’s oldest operating microbrewery will show you what craft brewing is all about. This premier hotspot for food and live entertainment serves nine in-house brews, multiple seasonals and small specialty batches. You’ll come across locals of all stripes downing ice cold pilsners brimming with “Cherry Bombshell, Alpha Blonde Ale and “Two Weeks Lager.” The taproom’s worn wooden beams arch over the shiny copper kettles. The open area is definitely “Old Morgantown” and features hand-built tables using recycled wood from WV buildings and a photo history of the university city. MBC’s back deck serves an exquisite view of the mighty Mon River bordered by the historic rail trail. Fresh brews are available for take home in growlers. 1291 University Ave, Morgantown Hours: Tue-Sat 11am-2am, Sun 3pm-12am 304.292.6959 www.morgantownbrewing.com Raise Your Glass GREATER MORGANTOWN, WV Mountain Moonshine In 1999 local attorney Payton Fireman established a safe, legal moonshine operation: West Virginia Distilling Company. Until the late ‘90s, West Virginia Moonshine was difficult to find, nearly all of it distilled illegally in the Appalachian mountains away from the prying eyes of tax revenue officers. The potent and sometimes dangerous liquid made men merry - or drove them crazy. Fireman’s “Mountain Moonshine” is a clear corn whiskey distilled from fermented corn mash and, like traditional moonshine, is consumed without aging. Renowned for its crisp, clear, taste, the label boasts: “Less than 30 days old.” A mellower version has been introduced in which oak wood chips have been soaked for one month. It looks and tastes a little more like ordinary whisky and when bottled, it is labeled “Less than 60 days old.” More than 500 cases of the mash are bottled almost immediately after processing in a warehouse in the Westover area of Greater Morgantown. Mountain Moonshine is currently available in roughly 100 of the 150 liquor stores in West Virginia. You can also find the “mash” in downtown Morgantown’s trendier bars, either served straight with ice , a shot, or in a cocktail with anything from fizzy lemonade to Red Bull.
