COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
by Peter Rothman
Summer is now Fall as I write this. Sorry for the late
edition but we wanted to get the BOG nominees for
2015 set first (see page 9 for list of nominees).
There is a little over a month until Docks Out. If the
weather continues without rain things may get dicey.
On another note about docks, Dock s In 2015 falls
on Easter weekend. The weekend after this is the OSU regatta and the weekend
before puts us in March... Just something to think about.
There is a constitution change up for a vote at our yearly meeting. It involves
adding a 13th standing committee, an Audit Committee. This committee will
provide a yearly look at the books by a different group. There is also a Bylaw
change, Bylaw 58, changing the amount of time motor boats used for junior racing
or SI can be kept on the grounds. I support both of these changes. Details of these
proposals are on page 9.
Sail Instruction had another banner year. Great work Jamie and the rest of your
team. Kudos also go out to our Junior Sailing/Racing Team for their great
performances this year. Nicely done Doug and Brett.
And finally, a huge thank you to Richard Blake and his stand-ins for the best
summer of Wednesday nights ever. Can't wait till next year.

Secretary’s Report.
Sarah Lynn presented the Secretary’s report for Marty
Sweterlitsch. Commodore Rothman moved to approve
the minutes of July 2014 BOG Meeting. The motion was
seconded by Dave Stetson and passed.
As of August 3 the docks are still floating with plenty of
water in the reservoir, we will monitor the situation in
case the docks need to be moved due to lower water.
Grounds Committee Report.
Jeff Tyndall had nothing to report.
House Committee Report.
Treasurer’s Report.
Financial Report - July was an extremely strong month for
income, with Sail Instruction (SI) revenue exceeding
projections by nearly $5k. All other income items were
as expected. In total year-to-date revenue is running
6% ($8k) ahead of last year. While expenses were well
short of forecasts for the month, the major driver was
our JRT/SI payroll, which is heavily impacted by how we
defined the pay periods. Should catch up in August. The
positive income trends from SI will be partially offset by
increased expenditures for some additional staffing and
boat repairs due to the larger program. Despite these
modest increases, the direct revenue of the SI program
is projected to exceed the direct, incremental costs by
more than $18k this year (vs. a plan of $17k). The Major
Improvement budget has not yet been allocated to any
programs this year.
The cleaning people keep doing a wonderful job. Ladies
bathroom toilet got a new handle.. Currently we are
working on the septic tank. During Windmill Nationals
the breaker continually tripped. There is a blockage from
the aerator to the outflow tank. Large amount of roots
were removed and it is now flowing, however, the pipe
will need to be replaced. Four estimates have been
received. During the process of inspection, some other
fine tuning to the system was identified. This repair plus
certain necessary maintenance should provide many
more years of a working septic system. Underside of
porch roof project was postponed for end of season. It
was decided that HSC will contract for the repairs and
have the work done yet this season.
Racing Committee Report.
Dave Stetson had nothing to report.

Docks Committee Report.
The warning beacon light on the club dock was knocked
off accidentally and will be repaired shortly. There is a

leaky barrel on the walkway bridge on the club house
docks that is causing them to lean. My suggestion is to
wait until the season end to repair it, others have
suggested a work party to repair it sooner as a safety
issue. The Board discussed the need for and timing of
repair of the leaky barrel and agreed that the walkway
bridge is stable and repair should be undertaken at the
end of the season.
Sail Instruction (SI) Report.
Jamie Jones reported. 2014 will go down as the season
with the highest enrollment and highest gross income in
our history. As of August 9, we have 344 students
enrolled in 405 class segments. 78 come back from
previous seasons and 20 members taking advantage of
our deal. Adult instruction has been particularly active
with 135 class segments, an increase of 44 over the prior
average.
Financially, July ended up being our highest income
month of the year, just a shade under $16k in income.
When the dust settles, we’ll be right around $64k in gross

income for the year against a budgeted $58k. Expenses
have been right on target with budget.
Junior Race Team (JRT) Report.
Hoover is on top – again! Please congratulate the 2014
I-LYA Junior Bay Week Laser Champion Scott Trask.
Additionally, ALL of our five Laser sailors finished in the
top 12 out of over 40 boats, wow! Having a competitive
420 on the water was another goal met for this year and
Girl Power put Hoover on the map.
Thanks to all the parents who made this JBW a home run
success. Lots of folks stepped up for chaperone duties
and some did double duty. As special heartfelt thanks to
Kathy and Ray Trask for their tireless efforts organizing
JBW for the HSC JRT! As usual, Jamie Jones was in his
helpful role with advice, hand lending and boat
transporting.

Gray John L. Gray, age 90, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014. He was born February 14,
1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late James and Edna Gray. John received his undergrad degree in Chemical Engineering
from Pratt Institute in New York City. He was a LTJG Navy veteran serving in the South Pacific until the end of WWII.
Upon returning from service, John obtained his law degree from Albany Law School, where he met his first wife,
Margaret "Peg" (Snyder). John was a Patent Attorney at Battelle Memorial Institute and moved up to VP of Research
and Development, which took him all over the world in his travels. He was with Battelle for almost 30 years before
beginning his private practice as Patent Trademark Attorney at Kegler, Brown, Hill, & Rittler until retirement at 79.
He served as President of Columbus Rotary and was a member of the Navy League. John was a loving husband,
father and grandfather. He was a great story teller and loved to sail and travel. He never met a stranger, lived an
inquisitive life, loved and was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents, John was
preceded in death by his first wife Margaret "Peg". He is survived by wife, Betty; son, Jim (Patty) Gray; daughter,

REGATTA RESULTS:
The Vermilion Rumgatta was lots of fun, according to
District Governor Ben France. A steady westerly breeze
of 13 gusting to 16 with windward-leeward courses
provided good surfing conditions for the 12 participants
in 5 races. Finishes of note include: 1. Ben France; 2. Kyle
Finefrock; 3. Kevin Shockey; 4. Stu Fisher, and 5. Steve
Lavender.
Grand River Fall Regatta Results. The new venue at
Fairport Harbor furnished truly great conditions, with
steady 15mph winds gusting to 20mph, long windwardleeward courses and lots of surfing/planning
opportunities throughout the three races, followed by a
fantastic party. 1. Kyle Finefrock; 2. Ben France; 3. Jack
Finefrock; 4. Mike Lovett; 5. Nicole Shedden, and 6. Bob
France.
24-Hour Endurance Race at Leatherlips, to benefit
Wounded Warriors. Ben France and company won, and
Steve Lavender/Bob McNitt/John Church/ Louis Chicoine
came in fourth.
Labor Day Series at Hoover - Clyde Findley won, and
Steve Lavender was second. Thanks to all of our intrepid
fleet members who came out especially to help with the
setup and the cleanup--many hands made for light work.
MORE LAKE ERIE FALL SERIES RACING IN OUR FUTURE:
9/13 Dornin Memorial, Pymatuming, PA
9/27 Cleveland Fall Regatta (Edgewater
YC instead of CYC this year)
10/4 Ice Breaker, Crescent Sail YC,
Grosse Pointe, MI
10/18 Fall Finale, Hoover Sailing Club
advance to the seven Hoover sailors who are loaning
their boats for this event: Mark Andrew; John Church;
Bob France; Wes Harnish; Tom Hubbell; Ann Jones, and
Bob McNitt. Also, Kit Holzaepfel of Leatherlips is loaning
his boat. Let's all try to get up there to spectate and
cheer for Stu Fisher!
THANKS FOR RACE COMMITTEE DUTY to those who
helped on Sunday, September 14. Remember, our last
Race Committee date is SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26--let's
finish the season with a flourish!
AND SPEAKING OF HELPING. our very own Hoover Fall
Finale Regatta is scheduled for October 18. Please stay
tuned for Fleet assignments from Doug Squires for this
very important regatta.
RESERVOIR WATCH - It's dropping pretty fast (on
September 12, it was down 4.46 feet). The shallows will
get shallower, and we shouldn't sail into those
yellowish/brownish areas, because we will get stuck.
Getting stuck is not fun! Remember, if we do get stuck
we can step out on the shallow side, push the boat off
(be sure to hold on to it) and jump back in! Shallow areas
include all of the West shore and the East shore both a
little way north and south of the Club. The shore beside
the Club is not as shallow, because the bottom is made
of the same type of hilly soil as the land in front and
immediately north of the Club. Also, the original, deeper,
stream bed flows from North to South along that part of
the East shore. The water is still pretty warm, but it will
cool down over the next month. That means we should
try to avoid capsize drills. SEE YOU ON THE WATER--NOT
IN IT!
THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
REGATTA, sponsored by US Sailing will be
raced at Edgewater Yacht Club on
October 9-12. Twenty-one Thistles will
be available to 19 invited competitors
plus one "mystery guest". The event is
open to World, North American and
national class champions. Thanks in

INTERLAKE INTERLUDES
want to be a bit smoother. So don’t be shy in pulling the
luffs smooth.
Bill: I like your website’s checklist about Interlakes hating
pinching. Tell me more. Is it different in low wind vs high
wind?
By Bill Kotys
I had an opportunity to interview Skip Dieball, who is a
multi-class champ (6-times Interlake). My questions
concerned the sails and the setup.
Bill: Skip, my “practice” set of sails are over 20 years old.
I also have some slightly used sails that are 7 years old.
Will they sail equally as fast?
Skip: They probably won’t sail as fast since designs have
changed. Without seeing and setting them up it is hard
to pin-point exactly what you might try to make them
work. Recently, my brother has sailed club racing with
35 (!!) year old Fisher Sails.
He simply makes sure that
the luff is set up correctly
(halyard tensions) and
then trims the leeches
with the sheet lines. It is
important, especially with
older sails to recognize
being
over
trimmed
(hooked)
or
under
trimmed (twisted), as the
groove becomes narrower
with time.
Skip: Generally, Interlakes do not like pinching, but it is a
very forgiving boat in that you can get away with it for
short spurts (like off the start), but you have to be up to
speed. Going slow and pinching is a double negative. I
think on venues like Hoover, you can get away with
pinching more than, say North Cape where there are
bigger waves. What I like to do before a race is go
upwind and watch the tell tails. I like to get them flowing
back straight and then “test” how wide the grove is by
slowly pinching and then footing. This will then tell me
how wide my upwind groove is and also how the front of
my jib is set up (entry). If it
is too fine (i.e. the tell tails
transition too quick), then
I’ll pull some cloth tension
on to combat that and test
again. With older sails, this
will be something you’ll
want to try.
Bill: So Based on that, how
should I set up the sails
and are there some rules
of thumb to go by?
Bill: How about jib leads?
Skip: I rarely move the leads
around once they are set.
In fact, I don’t recall ever
moving them on the fly.
The
high-aspect
jib,
coupled with the trim point
being pretty far from the
clew pretty much puts a
premium on trim tension.
It is very important to get
the lead right, but once set,
don’t goof around with it
too much.
Skip: I’d start by paying
close attention to the
wrinkles in the luff.
Generally, with newer

same recognition is critical with older sails, but you have
to make sure that those wrinkles aren’t excessive.
Skip: The answer is yes….but having a relative point of

relative measure. For boats with 2:1, taking a sharpie
and marking both parts adjacent to one another gives a
great measure.
Bill: it is said that the Vang is most important in
controlling the boat’s velocity under high winds, how
about 5mph winds?
Skip: Though Vang is important up range, don’t forget
about centerboard position! Having your CB pennant
marked for 1/8 up, 1/4 up, 3/8 up is pretty powerful.
Where you set it is really dependent on your crew weight
and relative helm…but by pulling the board up slightly,
you’ll reduce the helm. The Vang helps control the
tension on the mainsheet and acts as an extension to the
traveler. I believe that vang sheeting works in the
Interlake because it allows you to twist the main as you
ease, but keep the bottom half in check, thus helping
maintain aero lift.
To your question about lighter winds. Pretty simple. If
you aren’t hiking, you should have ZERO vang on upwind.
Once you are hiking (say 7-9 knots), then you are
addressing the vang as you have to ease the mainsheet
to balance the boat.
Bill: how have the Interlake sails changed in twenty
years? If I had new sails made from a 20 year old design
vs. current which, under the same conditions would win
and why?
Skip: Short answer is yes, they’ve changed. Our sail
designs were a forced change due to the software tools
we used. First with Quantum from ’07-’09 and then
when we went independent in ’09. We weren’t using the
same design software through the years, so in order to
evolve our shapes, we needed to do full design projects.
I think the biggest difference in shapes has come from
the innovations and evolution in sailcloth. Dacron has
become stronger through better weaving and resin.
Cloth suppliers can orient the cloth to be stronger in one
direction over the other, thus you see radial sails in
Dacron now. The goal is to make sails that are stronger
longer (i.e. faster longer too).
Bill: Thanks very much Skip, this is such useful
information for those of us trying to improve our skills.

This was the 4th overall
race, and it was cohosted by Leatherlips
and Hoover Sailing Club. With the event now co-hosted,
a new logo was needed
to show the unity
between our clubs.
This year we opted to
go with the Wounded
Warrior Project as the
beneficiary while being
supported by the
Fallen 15.
With the 2014 race and
the unity of 2 sailing clubs, we were able to increase
participation by 4 boats for a total of 12: seven boats
from LYC and five from HSC. For the first time, we had 3
Thistles racing against each other. Also participating
were Leatherlips Junior Race team, OSU sailing, and Sea
Scouts 280 which also teaches sailing to kids.
page 10
Most importantly the race raised over $10,000 in online
donations. When you then factor in the raffle from our
great sponsors (22 this year) and the fish fry dinner (Jack
Boyles), the event raised over $12,000 for the Wounded
Warrior Project. There is still time to donate to our
event. Go to https://support.woundedwarriorproject
.org/group-fundraising/endurancerace.
The fish fry dinner also included a 2 hour presentation by
Sean Clifton, a Green Beret who was injured in the line of
duty in 2009, and Angie Earley who is
a highly decorated Trauma Surgeon.
Each sailing team came to battle for
the top prize of Top Fundraising
Team. This was tightly contested
with Team Daysailors (which we
nicknamed Team Knight Rider during
the night hours) raising over $1,500
for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Way to lead the charge!
With Leatherlips bringing the party this year, we had 4
music groups: a soloist Saturday afternoon, a band and
duo act in the evening, and another band Sunday
morning. The music was used to bring home the sailors

to the finish in an absolute down pour. Can anything
stop our sailors?
The racing began with big breeze that actually caused
all of the teams to adjust their sailing schedules, as
they were getting tired much faster than initially
anticipated -- except for Jeff Clark (6hrs straight) and
our lone and 2 time Shackleton Winners, Rick and
Joanne Savage, (sailed 20 of the 24 hrs).
By early evening the breeze had calmed down and
everyone settled into a pace that suited enduring the
24 hours. The evening hours saw
solid 8 to 10 with only a small
period of calm drifting.
For the 3rd year in a row, we saw
two weather delays giving the
sailors a total of 2 hours resting
time.
The final results saw a Thistle sailed
masterfully by Team Ben France
take top prize. Fallen 15 (Interlake),
sailed by Scott Savage, Tim Savage,
and Steve Aspery was second, and
closely challenged by TeaMC (MC
Scow), organized by Jeff Clark and
joined by fellow MC skippers.
Fourth place was sailed by 4 the
Vets (Thistle) Steve Lavender, Bob
McNitt and many Thistle sailors
from HSC. In 5th was White Mist (Interlake) Steve
Nearing and Dave White. A lot of work was put in by

AJ Savage, Jill Savage, Jack Boyles, Cami Haggis, Tonya

with race committee from both clubs to make sure that
this race was a huge success. Our sponsors also deserve
a big hand for contributing to the event and we should
all make sure to stop and visit them.

MEET THE FLEETS
by Kathy Bachman
Adult graduates of Hoover Sailing Club's 2014 sail
instruction program gathered on Friday evening August
22 to "Meet the Fleets." Jamie
Jones, Chairperson for HSC
Sail Instruction, facilitated the
event and introduced fleet
captains to the students. The
fleets were well-represented
at this gathering. Fleet
captains talked to graduates
about fleet boats, activities of
the various fleets, and
opportunities to crew and sail
at HSC. Many student sailors
toured the dry sail and dock
areas to view various fleet
boats, and were encouraged
to sign up as crew.
"Meet the Fleets" is planned as an annual event at the
end of sail instruction (August) to introduce motivated
adult sailing students to the various Fleets at Hoover.
This event is positioned as an opportunity for fleets to
recruit new members for the fleets as well as HSC.
