I ran across quite a ‘lil buy in my local dollar store, of all places. Don’t misunderstand – I love my department store cosmetics – but this was just a happen-along, if you will. Instead of expensive skin Rx brighteners, I found an inexpensive version, and it works great for $2—yes, $2. It’s called Black and White Bleaching Cream, and yes, it works... SKIN CARE A n t i - Ag i n g B re a kt h ro u g h s Latest in Lasers W ith plastic surgery numbers on the decline thanks to a rise in cutting - edge laser treatment technology , more and more skin doctors and med spa owners are offering the latest energy - based cosmetic procedures to help you combat the signs of aging . W hether they use laser beams or intense (IPL), these anti - aging breakthroughs typically have few side effects and minimal downtime performed by an experienced , qualified practitioner like a doctor , nurse or aesthetician . pulsed light when “The laser heats the dermis well below the skin’s surface, causing collagen to contract and resulting in tighter skin.” THE PROBLEM: Loose or sagging skin THE SOLUTION: Laser Skin Tightening THE PROBLEM: Rosacea and birthmarks THE SOLUTION: IPL Therapy PROCEDURE: Using infrared technology, the laser heats the dermis well below the skin’s surface, causing collagen to contract and resulting in tighter skin. It can firm up slack areas on the face, neck, jowls, abdomen, arms and knees, but isn’t recommended for patients over 45 — because they lack enough collagen in the skin to cause a significant amount of shrinkage — or for those with a great deal of excess skin due to dramatic weight loss. PROCEDURE: The device emits a specific broadband of light that won’t cause UV or extensive heat damage, but will reduce redness. IPL is suitable for rosacea or broken blood vessels on the face. SIDE EFFECTS: The procedure is virtually pain-free and no downtime is required, although you may notice some redness and mild swelling in the treated area. RESULTS: Expect to see an improvement immediately and over the subsequent three to six months as new collagen continues to form. Cost: $800-$1200 per session, depending on the size of the area being treated. SIDE EFFECTS: While bruising is less common with IPL than other treatments, there is there is some risk of increased pigmentation, as well as burns from the heat. Downtime is typically a couple of days and it does require multiple sessions – typically four or five. Treatments take about 20-30 minutes to do the entire face. RESULTS: Many people see a 70-90 percent improvement in rosacea after at least two treatments. The effects could last one to two years, after which you may require maintenance visits. Between sessions, keep out of the sun and avoid skin products that irritate. Cost: $400-$500 per session for IPL for the full face. 11 THE PROBLEM: Stretch marks THE SOLUTION: Erbium Fractionated Laser Skin Resurfacing PROCEDURE: Stretch marks can occur on all skin tones; the older the stretch marks, the more difficult to fade, but fractionated laser skin resurfacing may be your best bet. Erbium is an ablative laser that stimulates and regenerates collagen by delivering a controlled amount of heat deep into skin. When it creates microscopic thermal zones, skin contracts and shrinks around them, resulting in an improvement in how the stretch mark looks. It also stimulates new collagen formation around the areas of thermal injury. This new collagen will hopefully replace the damaged collagen that is the reason for the stretch mark. SIDE EFFECTS: None reported. RESULTS: Most people will need between 3-5 treatments. For some, results will last two years or more; for others, results will be permanent. With darker skin, there is some risk of the marks going brown after treatment, but this is usually temporary. COST: $200-$500 per session, depending on the size of the treatment area. 12 THE PROBLEM: Scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles THE SOLUTION: Laser Skin Resurfacing PROCEDURE: In the past, CO2 lasers removed the entire upper layer of skin to treat wrinkles, scarring and age spots. Those laser treatments required weeks of recovery time because the skin “wept” for several days and then crusted over. CO2 lasers have since improved, meaning minimal downtime (typically less than a week) and risk. The new fractionated lasers deposit light energy through hundreds of microscopic holes in the skin, but leave the surrounding tissue intact. The “injury” it causes promotes the formation of new collagen, which causes tightening of the tissues underneath the skin and improvement of skin quality. SIDE EFFECTS: When performed correctly, it has very little risk, but a topical anesthetic cream must be applied 45 minutes before treatment. After about five days, you can return to work. If the treatment is performed incorrectly, there is a risk of burning and tissue sloughing. RESULTS: Because this procedure stimulates collagen, you’ll need to wait up to six months to see the full effect of new collagen production. Results from one session can last a year or longer, after which you may need periodic touch-ups. “CO2 lasers have since improved, meaning minimal downtime (typically less than a week) and risk.” 13 Med Spa 101 Cosmetic Injectables InWithSkin knows it’s not easy to keep up with the latest fillers available to help smooth wrinkles, restore lost volume, and reduce the signs of aging. One common myth is that you have to let acne run its course, but dermatologists know this is not always the best advice. Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears, and there are many effective acne-fighting products on the market. Today, more and more women in their 30s, 40s and 50s are battling this skin condition. D r . A u r o r a D e J u l i i s h as s o me t hi n gs y o u c an av o i d do i n g t h at w il l h e l p p rev e nt an A C N E i nv as i o n . TO U C H I N G YO U R B L E M I S H E S While most people are tempted to squeeze or fiddle with acne blemishes, you actually shouldn’t do this. Touching your pimples is probably one of the worst things to do when suffering from acne. Serious consequences include the worsening of inflammation, spread of infection and a longer healing process. When you squeeze a pimple, the risk of having an indelible scar is multiplied. The only manipulation methods recommended for skin blemishes and acne are deep cleansing techniques carried out by a facial skin aesthetician or a dermatologist. S L E E P I N G W I T H YO U R M A K E U P O N That you can’t wear makeup when you have acne is a myth. Not removing your makeup before bedtime … now that’s a mortal sin! Makeup left overnight hinders skin renewal and clogs your pores, and when your pores are clogged bacteria can build up and cause inflammation. TIP: Always keep a stash of makeup remover wipes by your bedside table. They’ll come in handy on nights you’re too tired or sleepy to wash your face. But don’t make them your nightly go-to! 17 C L E A N S I N G YO U R S K I N EX C E S S I VE LY To treat acne, washing your face every morning and night may not be helpful. Sometimes people think “more is better” when it comes to skin cleansing and will scrub excessively. They use specially formulated gels, products for oily skin and harsh or abrasive cleansers. Cleansing the skin excessively is a mistake because it only aggravates the skin, without addressing the problem. The main cause of acne is an overproduction of sebum by sebaceous glands located at the root of hair follicles. Skin that is irritated by too many cleansing products will start producing more sebum, not less, creating an environment conducive to acne. It is actually more effective and less harmful to use a single cleansing product, once or twice per day at most. You should also use an acne cream or spot-drying treatment once daily. U S I N G O N LY TO P I C A L T R E AT ME N T S When suffering from acne, it is common to focus on affected areas by cleansing or using various daily treatments, while ignoring other factors and possible causes. Acne triggers include excess sebum, stress, high levels of progesterone, tobacco use and high blood sugar - as well as many others. A comprehensive treatment is recommended in the fight against acne, no matter what your age. This includes not only skin care but also living a healthy lifestyle, managing stress and avoiding destructive behaviors like overindulgence in alcohol, drugs or junk food. N O T C L E A N I N G YO U R M A K E U P B RU S H E S Sometimes, it’s not the makeup that’s exacerbating your acne; it’s your bacteria-laden makeup brushes and sponges. To keep your skin clear, wash your applicators at least once a week with a gentle cleanser designed for that purpose. S P E N D I N G TO O M U C H T I ME I N T H E S U N Frequent sun tanning doesn’t just increase your risk of developing skin cancer – it also triggers breakouts on those with acne-prone skin. Sun, heat and humidity can cause oil glands to become overactive, which can lead to acne breakouts. Another skin sin that you’re probably guilty of? Not applying sunscreen! To make sure you don’t break out, choose an oil-free, noncomedogenic product. NOT CHANGING YOUR PILLOWCASE REGULARLY 18 This may seem irrelevant, but consider the fact that your face spends eight hours a day (assuming you’re getting a good night’s sleep every night) pressed firmly on your pillow. And if you’re not changing your pillowcase, you’re basically lying on accumulated dust and dead skin cells. And it’s not just the pillowcase; your bath towel could be harboring as much acnecausing bacteria! Not too much Sun Change your pillow case Wash face at night USING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS THAT DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD Certain ingredients in your skin care products— moisturizer, toner and sunscreen—can be irritating your skin and causing you to break out. Mineral oil, petrolatum, lanolin, perfume and artificial colors are the usual offenders, but it’s not just those. Even alcohol can overly dry your skin and cause it to overcompensate by producing more sebum. To be sure, read the labels on your skin and body care products, as well as your makeup. Look for keywords like: “non-comedogenic” (does not clog pores), “oil-free,” “fragrance-free” and “alcohol-free.” NOT APPLYING SPOT TREATMENT CORRECTLY It’s not enough you know what spot treatment is best for acne. Knowing when to use it, how often to apply, and how long to wear it is absolutely just as crucial. Benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient commonly found in acne treatments, has a one to three hour working time, and any cream that comes in contact with it before it has completed its work will likely inhibit the active ingredient from working properly. Wait at least an hour before applying moisturizer and/or sunscreen for best results. USING TOO MUCH MEDICATION Everyone wants their acne to clear up quickly, so you may be tempted to slather on your treatment products several times (or more) per day. Overusing topical medications can’t hurt, right? Besides, won’t your acne clear up faster if you apply your medications more often? You may be surprised to learn that applying too much medication, or applying too often, won’t clear acne up any faster. But it will most definitely cause excessive drying, redness, peeling, and irritation. Using your medications exactly as directed is the best way to clear acne, without harming your skin. Penetrating beams of light continuously rebuild collagen beneath the skin’s surface for a more youthful, radiant and refreshed look in as little as two weeks. The first FDA-cleared, full-face, non-ablative fractional laser can be used on all skin types and offers the same coverage as an in-office laser procedure. However, there are a few catches. Tria’s version is less powerful than an in-office treatment and covers smaller areas of skin at one time, so it was designed to be used for 12 weeks, five nights a week for results similar to two office sessions. Tria’s Age-Defying Laser The small handheld wand has three power levels, varying from 2-10 minutes to treat the entire face. Other than redness, the most prevalent side effect reported is dry skin. Use a moisturizing serum, as the laser will increase the absorption of peptides and antioxidants, and be sure to slather on the SPF daily. Though it may not be as potent, skin care professionals warn that side effects can still be damaging if the device is used improperly. For example, overtreating the same area may cause welts or blisters. Every day a new ingredient, product or treatment comes out claiming to finish off fine lines and rejuvenate skin plagued by wrinkles. But there are a few tried and true anti-aging breakthroughs that truly are miracle workers. 22 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ INGREDIENTS Antioxidants TREATMENTS Fractional CO2 Laser SKIN RESURFACING One of the most overused words in skin care and the food industry is “antioxidants”, which are in everything from serums to salad toppings. But what are these powerful disease-fighting particles? Essentially, antioxidants are nutrients that destroy body-damaging free radicals. When applied topically through skin care products, antioxidants like vitamin C or CoQ10 fight aging by destroying these unstable molecules that can wreak havoc on your skin’s collagen levels. The anti-aging breakthrough of the decade, this skin resurfacing procedure gives you all the benefits of traditional laser resurfacing with a new application technique that delivers the same benefits without the harsh side effects and lengthy downtime. Basically, small beams of energy light create tiny holes in the skin to speed up collagen production. The Fractional CO2 machine prevents damage to the top layer of skin, resulting in only a few days of recovery time with up to 10 years of lasting results. Peptides InjectableFillers You’ve heard peptides are good for your skin, and you know companies like HydroPeptide have built their entire brand around them. So what’s the big deal? Unlike antioxidants that prevent collagen damage, peptides are tiny proteins that actually stimulate collagen production. Recent advancements in peptide technology have led to formulas that act as growth factors, speeding up the production process to mimic the more rapid cell regeneration of younger skin. Move over Botox! Since the FDA’s approval of numerous other fillers in recent years –Dysport, Juvéderm, Perlane, Radiesse and Restylane to name a few– you now have multiple options for eradicating wrinkles. Even more impressive, fillers can now be used to add volume almost anywhere on the face, so you can achieve a more natural youthful look without going under the knife. Results vary, but in many cases results last up to a year or longer. Check out our injectable comparison chart to find out which one is right for you! Retinoids Skin care products containing retinoids, byproducts of vitamin A, have been around for decades. Chances are you know someone who has used Retin-A to treat acne, but did you know retinoids are also powerful wrinkle reducers? Available in regular skin care products in the form of retinol or in prescription strength products as retinoids, they deliver the collagen protecting power of antioxidants with the collagen production ability of peptides. While retinoids, which can cause irritation and redness, were once thought to be much more effective than retinol, that is no longer the case.
