Sack Summer Hunger
When school ends so do the nutritious breakfasts and lunches that students receive through
the free and reduced food program. This can lead to food insecurities for some youngsters.
Sack Summer Hunger will prevent that from happening to over 1,700 children in the
Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Coppell and Dallas Independent School Districts.
In conjunction with nine
local partners, Metrocrest
Services will distribute 150,000
meals throughout the summer.
Samantha’s three daughters
have been Sack Summer Hunger
recipients since the program began
in 2011. When they are out of
school, Samantha struggles to stretch her paycheck to buy additional food. She has a steady
job but does not qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). “The
amount of money we have is small, but I don’t like asking for help,” explained the Farmers
Branch resident. “With no child support income, it’s hard to provide those extra meals.”
The weekly Sack Summer Hunger distributions ensure her daughters and all the young
participants enjoy simple meals, along with snacks, over a nine-week period. Youngsters
receive ingredients for simple lunches, breakfasts and snacks to last at least 5 days. The
contents of the sacks vary each week but include kid-friendly items such as instant oatmeal,
HotPockets, Go-Gurt, and sandwich supplies such as bread, sliced turkey, and cheese.
Volunteers who work to prepare the sacks and distribute to kids on Saturdays appreciate
the opportunity to address a need in their own community. That’s the reason Samantha and
her girls will participate again this year by delivering Sack Summer Hunger supplies. As she
described it, “I’m giving back to the community that has given so much to me and my family.”
Hungry children in our community are counting on you. For only $54 you can feed a child for
the entire summer. $540 can feed 10 children for the summer.

Learn about
community needs
Please plan to attend one of our one-hour monthly tours
where you will learn about our programs so that you can
share that information with others. Find out how our aid
efforts impact the lives of local residents, and the role of
local businesses and groups in making our community
stronger. Tour our facility, including our food pantry, and get
answers to questions you have about local needs and ways
you can help. At the same time, you will find out how why
2,500 volunteers are vital to our aid efforts, and how you can
become part of that team. Thursday, July 9th—5:30 p.m.

Appreciation
Luncheon Honors Stars of Metrocrest
Metrocrest Services rolled out the red carpet on Saturday, May
2nd for a Hollywood themed event honoring individuals who
share their time and talents in support of agency operations
by volunteering.
Seventy attendees were treated to lunch at the Victoria
Restaurant in Farmers Branch and music by Dave Tanner.
Prize drawings including Southwest Airlines tickets, a
chocolate gift assortment package and passes to the Dallas
Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Volunteers serve in a
wide range of positions from delivering meals to senior
clients, overseeing daily food pantry operations, representing
the agency at community events, serving as employment
counselors, and helping during seasonal distributions such
as school supplies and Sack Summer Hunger. During the
last year 2,743 individuals volunteered 38,018 hours at an
estimated value of $855,397.
To learn more about current volunteer needs visit www.

Meet
James
“A
n enthusiastic attitude, that describes James,”
explains Metrocrest Services Case Manager Liza
Galloway. Six months ago, thirty-five-year-old
James relocated his family from California to Texas. Sharing
a room in a local motel isn’t ideal for a family, but it was an
expense he managed by sharing with a friend. He moved in
hopes of finding better job opportunities, but first he needed
food and clothing for his children. He reached out to Metrocrest
Services for help. During their initial meeting, Liza arranged
for James to receive food vouchers for visits to the pantry.
During each visit he selected items, ranging from cereal to
toiletries, with quantities based on his family size. Liza also
provided vouchers redeemable for clothing at Metrocrest
Resale. James was serious about securing a job. He met a few
times with Metrocrest Services Employment Coordinator
Patricia Granados regarding local job openings. The level
of his commitment was apparent when he arrived for those
appointments dressed for interviewing. “I really loved working
with Metrocrest. I was able to set financial goals and then
receive step-by-step instructions on how to reach those goals.
For the first time in a while, I was enthusiastic about moving
forward.”
James secured a temporary warehouse job which he hopes
will become a long-term position (as of May, he’s been there
5 months). Meanwhile he is scheduled to begin financial
education training. A positive attitude and the resources
available at Metrocrest Services—a great combination for
helping James get his family on solid ground in Texas.

Medicare.gov - Finding Your Drug Plan
Sunday, August 2, 3 pm show
$19/resident, $21/non-resident
The Producers is a musical about a musical, a show within
a show...except the musical being produced is written by
a Nazi about his hero, Hitler...and, the objective of the
production is failure. Producer Max Bialystock, whose
specialty is seducing rich little old ladies, takes on a
repressed, yearning-to-break-free accountant, Leo Bloom,
as apprentice producer in the quest to fund and mount the
show, “Springtime for Hitler.” The music is great, the jokes
are as fresh as they are old (you can’t believe you’re still
laughing at them), most of the chorus girls are beautiful, and
the material, which respects no taboos, is pure Mel Brooks
at his finest. Resident registration begins July 1 and nonresident registration begins July 8.

Back-to-School
Supply Program
For low income families, there are times of the year
where certain expenses just can’t be met. In the late
summer with the new school year approaching, the cost
of providing the needed items to start school is too much
for some of our families. Metrocrest Services fills the gap
by hosting a Back-to-School Extravaganza for school
aged children. The families we serve come to a one-day
event and are provided everything needed to start the year
ready to learn including school supplies, backpacks, student
uniforms, haircuts, eye exams and glasses, dental screenings,
and other items.
For more information about the
Back-to-School Program,
contact Tammy Payton at
[email protected]
or 972.446.2100.

Metrocrest Services
helps Flood Victims
On Monday, June 1, 2015 Metrocrest Services started helping over 100
Coppell and Carrollton families that had been affected by the recent
floods. The two areas included the Sandy Lake RV Park in Carrollton and
Wellington Apartments in Coppell.
To meet the needs of flood victims, office and pantry hours were
extended and Case Workers met with residents in the field. Emergency
services being provided include temporary housing (at an average cost of
$315 per family per week), supplies of food, hygiene items, and gift cards.
Want to make an impact in the lives of flood victims? Call Mike Harris
at 972.446.2100 or email [email protected].
