Serving Not for Profit Organisations
Serving Not for Profit Organisations Helping you succeed At Horwath Clark Whitehill we recognise that not for profit organisations have special needs. The task of setting priorities is challenging, matching the demands to satisfy short term needs against pressure for the resources required to achieve long term solutions. We appreciate that commercial and business imperatives need to be carefully considered and that best practice from all relevant sectors needs to be adapted and implemented where relevant. About Horwath Clark Whitehill and our services As a top ten UK audit practice, Horwath Clark Whitehill (HCW) is one of the top three providers of audit and related services to the charity and education sectors and provides audit and related services to many of the UK’s leading charities. The not for profit sector represents approximately 30% of our business nationally. We were selected as the firm with the best “charity expertise” in the Charity Finance 2008 Audit Survey and for many years we have had the fastest growing charity business as shown in the CaritasData records. We have a long history of investing in developing the best resources to serve the sector and our renowned team of specialists was strengthened on 1 September 2008 when Pesh Framjee, the long standing Head of Non Profits at Deloitte, moved to HCW with the principal members of his team and many of their clients. Our firm now has the largest team of true specialists working in the not for profit sector. The related areas such as VAT, tax, risk management and IT services are strong and sector focused. Horwath Clark Whitehill is the UK member of Horwath International, one of the largest global accountancy organisations, operating in over 550 offices worldwide. The breadth and depth of not for profit expertise we can draw upon globally makes us ideally placed to advise charities internationally. We are constantly investing in resources to serve our clients better. For example, we have designed the unique web-based risk management software ‘Charity Magique’ based on our expertise and wide experience as one of the UK’s top charity auditors. Charity Magique combines the strengths of ‘Magique’, one of the UK's two leading risk management software products, used extensively by FTSE100 companies and in the public sector, with our knowledge of charity issues and trustee requirements. Since Charity Magique is web-based it can be accessed wherever there is an internet connection and used by departments branches or decentralised offices. We have real experience and hands on expertise of working with charities, schools and other not for profit organisations. Members of our team have worked for not for profit organisations both in the UK and overseas and are also Board Members. We bring to our clients valuable insights, different perspectives, demonstrable expertise, enthusiasm and high quality in all we do. We work with organisations of all types and sizes. In addition to the mainstream charities we recognise the importance of specific sub-sectors and provide specialists with hands on experience of working with different kinds of organisations including: arts, cultural and heritage organisations care providers, hospitals and other service providers grant makers international non governmental organisations non departmental public bodies professional bodies, membership organisations and livery companies registered social landlords research organisations schools, academies, higher and further education institutions and other educational bodies students unions trades unions. Our clients speak for themselves “We selected HCW primarily because it seemed to us that the focus that Horwath Clark Whitehill has on the charity sector meant they had a specialisation which was highly developed and which would not carry the same weight in a large firm. We have been impressed by the flexibility of approach, specialist technical advice and ‘ownership’ of our issues, both by the audit partner, Tim Baines and his team. We are pleased we chose HCW, and the doubts about a non ‘top four’ team have long since vanished. They work in partnership with us bringing a depth of expertise, a very pragmatic approach and a good cultural fit.” John Tranter, Director of Finance, Mencap “We in Christian Aid have appreciated the services and support provided to Christian Aid. Pesh Framjee brings to this his vast experience of the Charity sector and also his commitment to good practice and professionalism required by us in our work. He has helped us in some very real concerns as we try to work in a variety of settings in international development and grants management necessary to assist our partners. Charity accountability, risk management and transparency are important issues not only for our regulators but the wider public from whom we raise funds. We need to develop these areas and we have benefited from the advice and challenges from Pesh and his team. This has been a healthy relationship and one from which our major stakeholders can have confidence.” Daleep Mukarji, CEO, Christian Aid “At RNID we have found HCW to be very proactive, and the balance of having a firm which is large enough to provide a full range of audit and other services whilst retaining a clear charity sector specialism as one of their key business strands has worked well for us.” Paul Breckell, Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Resources, RNID “Based on several years of excellent service I can thoroughly recommend our audit team. I have been uniformly impressed by the quality of the service. I am particularly grateful for the expert care and attention we have received from Pesh Framjee, our audit partner, whose knowledge of charitable operations in UK and internationally coupled with a real understanding of the regulatory perspectives and commerical issues have proved invaluable." Mike Lake, Director General, Help the Aged When we made the appointment we were looking, above all, for in-depth technical knowledge of non profits. The bonus for RSPB has been the willingness of the team to draw on their experience to offer practical solutions in most situations." Alan Sharpe, Director, Finance & IS, The RSPB “Having recently moved from a major charity audited by a Big 4 firm I have been very pleased by the depth of experience and the quality of service I am receiving at Horwath Clark Whitehill. In particular, the best VAT advice I have had for years” John Graham, Director of Finance, The Royal British Legion “Pesh Framjee and his team at Horwath Clark Whitehill have just completed their first audit of WWF-UK. Pesh has for some time been a sound source of advice for us, but I was particularly struck by the high level of knowledge of charity accounting and the working of charities of the rest of the team. They very quickly understood how we operated and where the problems and risks might be. I would unreservedly recommend Pesh and his team at HCW as auditors to any charity.” Caroline Emerton, Director of Resources, (until December 2008) WWF-UK “We have been audited by Horwath Clark Whitehill for the past eight years receiving a quality service and clear professional advice. As a complex organisation we have benefited from the breadth of Horwath Clark Whitehill's knowledge of the Not for Profit sector Covering Charity law, Trade Union Law, Company law, VAT and taxation. All the staff we have dealt with have been friendly and approachable enabling us to build a strong working relationship with them removing stress from the whole process. We wholeheartedly recommend them to you.” Louise Silverton, Deputy General Secretary, The Royal College of Midwives “The experience and significant depth of knowledge Pesh Framjee and Naziar Hashemi have of the charity sector provides significant benefit and added value to the Society. In particular, Pesh's broad knowledge of the sector is most impressive and he always brings valuable insight and contributions that go beyond the financials."
